Dell Studio XPS 9100 arrives w/ six cores, little fanfare

AMD`d its turn in the high-end Dell desktop spotlight, although (unless) it’s time 4 another Intel beast, as the company’s quietly upgraded its tower lineup to support Intel’s consumer-grade champion chip, the 3.33GHz Core i7-980X . While the new Studio XPS 9100 looks just the same as its predecessor on the outside & sports the same basic options & ports, internally there’s the 525W power supply w/ enough juice 4 the Radeon HD 5970 2GB graphics card (a $580 option) & slots 4 up to 24GB of DDR3 memory. U won’t B gett`g any of this pixel-push`g goodness on the $950 base model, of course, which`s only the (respectable) quad-core 2.66GHz Core i7-920 & an Nvidia GeForce G310 512MB, although (unless) the machine looks like it could hold its own w/ low-end Alienware cousins if U get into $2,000+ territory. ‘The Shack’ downsizes, opens Bullseye Mobile kiosks in many Target stores

Radio Shack`s @ it again, expand`g your perceptions of the place Z once actually sold radio components. the year after Z ill-received ‘The Shack’ market`g campaign the company`s now mak`g the rather more substantial move, secur`g an arrangement w/ Target stores to C the creation of so-called Bullseye Mobile kiosks. This`s started w/ the 100-store pilot program but, throughout this year & into summer next, the expectation`s to prop them up in 1,750 big box locations. Dell Zino HD 410 quietly leaks out w/ AMD quad-core potential

Once upon the time, Dell’s Zino HD promised desktop parts in the tiny box & didn’t quite deliver the goods, although (unless) it`s still cute & powerful enough the mini-desktop to earn the spot on our holiday gift guide . This time round, it looks like Dell might actually fulfill Z original pledge, as support documents leaked @ the company’s website show the box sport`g an AMD RS880M chipset capable of socket`g Phenom II quad-core processors. While it only comes w/ onboard Radeon HD 4250 graphics by default, the Mobility Radeon 5450 GPU`s listed as the potential option @ launch, & the box can now hold up to 8GB of 1066MHz DDR3 memory alongside 802.11n WiFi & Blu-ray drive options. On the front & back of the small box, you’ll find practically exactly the same ports, although (unless) there`s the new optical S/PDIF socket capable of pip`g 7.1 surround sound. While there’s no guarantee all these options R slated 4 the stateside launch, V imagine Dell`ll either deliver or keep the tighter lid on these sorts of docs . Remote Control Mario Kart toys tested, don’t drift although (unless) do shoot (video)

WD TV Live Plus gets reviewed, lauded 4 value

After be`g announced in early June , Anandtech recently put the Western Digital WD TV Live Plus through its paces & discovered the Netflix enhancement works as advertised. Like many Netflix-enabled devices though, the TV Live comes up short compared to the full PC experience since access`s limited to only the Instant Queue. Its presence also sacrifices firmware hackability — the quality which previously made up 4 the WD TV Live’s lack of versatility as an HTPC. The ability to move, copy, & manage locally stored media files via the interface, on the other hand,`s praised as the unique advantage over compet`g models — exciting, V know. Sadly, video quality`s docked as be`g “significantly less than the HTPC counterparts they’ve seen so far.” However, it’s possible this could B improved in the future via firmware updates, since its Sigma Designs processor features noise reduction & deinterlac`g algorithms Z strangely aren’t currently enabled. File format-wise, DVD ISOs worked flawlessly, while Blu-ray ISO & some WMV video formats experienced issues Z users may want to read up on before buying. Gripes aside though, Anandtech`s still will`g to place it “around the top of the list” 4 media player devices, thanks to its wide file compatibility & robust features. 4 more details, hit the review source link. Enso whips up 2 smartphones & 3 new slates, although (unless) V wouldn’t order any of ‘em

Oh, Enso — must U really give us the reason to hope? PS3 firmware 3.41 said to B caus`g hard drive upgrade problems

The recently released PS3 firmware 3.41 seemed to just B the minor update Z added the new “You May Like” section to the PlayStation Store, although (unless) it looks like it’s`en caus`g noth`g although (unless) headaches 4 anyone try`g to upgrade the hard drive in their console. As the 30-page strong thread on the official PlayStation forums reveals, folks upgrad`g their hard drive`ve`en gett`g the “no applicable data” error after try`g to install the update , which`s left them w/ the non-work`g PS3 and, in some cases, the corrupted original drive. Accord`g to CVG , the issue may`ve someth`g to do w/ the newly discovered feature of the 3.41 update Z allows 4 more incremental patches, which might also explain why the problem only seems to B affect`g PS3s where the firmware`s stored in on the hard drive instead of the system’s memory. As 4 Sony, it hasn’t offered an official explanation just yet, although (unless) all indications R Z it’s the bug & not an intentional block`g of hard drive upgrades — @ least V hope it is. How`ld U change the Drobo FS?

Rover Puck WiMAX hotspot gets FCC’d, traction on ice subject of fierce debate

The pool of choices 4 WiMAX hotspots continues to expand, & thanks to the FCC , V now know of another up-and-comer. Magic Trackpad review

Apple’s Magic Trackpad isn’t the 1st of its kind — in fact, Wacom`s`en play`g this game 4 awhile — although (unless) it’s the 1st of its kind from the cats in Cupertino, so obviously people take notice. The premise of such the device`s stupidly simple: it’s the laptop trackpad Z lives on your desktop. Over the past few years, there`ve`en rumors Z Steve Jobs`s his sights set on eliminat`g buttons from Apple products altogether, & this certainly feels like the next step in the plan. although (unless) does it make sense?`s this an improvement over standard input devices like the mouse or trackball? EVO 4G’s Froyo firmware`s available 4 download, manual install (update)

Like V said, U don’t`ve to wait until August 3rd to get your Android 2.2 Froyo update 4 the EVO 4G . U can grab the update file right now from HTC’s servers (via source link). All U gotta do then`s move the file to the root directory of your SD card, boot the phone into recovery mode (hold the “up” button while the phone`s turn`g on), & select apply update from the associated .zip file — U might also`ve to rename the file “update.zip” & expect the few other variations in the instructions, user depending. Too much thought process 4 Friday evening? Feel free to take the crack @ it tomorrow, or simply wait 4 Sprint to give your phone the head’s up next week. Update: HTC just shot us the message to clarify Z this`s not the final ROM version & Z the company`s strongly recommend`g not to install this. Additionally, the request`s`en put in to remove the file from the server, so if U still want to try @ your own risk, better download now while it’s still available. Update 2: … & now it’s gone

Motorola Sage: AT&T’s next Android phone?

V tend to go into full-on conjecture mode when V C an interest`g FCC filing, although (unless) our instincts haven’t let us down in the past , so allow us to throw someth`g out on the table. the new Motorola just hit the feds w/ 7.2Mbps HSDPA & 2Mbps HSUPA on the 850 & 1900MHz bands, quadband EDGE, WiFi, Bluetooth, AGPS, & the digital compass. In other words, this`s definitely an Android set, & it could definitely work on AT&T. The Backflip’s already look`g plenty long in the tooth, & V wouldn’t B surprised to C Moto fire its 2nd Google-powered volley on AT&T before too long — it’s certainly`en do`g its duties on Verizon (and to the lesser extent, T-Mobile) after all. Nexus 1 blasts off to 28,000 feet, looks slightly worse 4 wear (video)

Your average satellite these days`s roughly on par in terms of size w/ your average liv`g room, give or take, & so naturally the cost of loft`g 1 into orbit is, if you’ll pardon the phrase, sky high . Despite that, many offer less process`g power the mobile processor like Snapdragon . The obvious solution? Chuck the smartphone into orbit & revel in the savings. That’s the idea behind the PhoneSat, helped along by the Mavericks Civilian Space Foundation, which strapped the Nexus 1 into the rocket w/ 1,000lbs of thrust & threw it up to 28,000 feet to C how it copes w/ the immense stress of rid`g into space. Of course, 28,000 feet isn’t quite space (NASA`ld`ve run out of astronaut badges long ago), although (unless) the G-forces & temperature cycles felt dur`g this short trip R comparable to the one-way voyage to orbit. Buy`g an iPhone 4 from the Canadian carrier? It’s locked

We’ve`en tipped this morn`g (and`ve now`en able to confirm, thanks to our own Myriam Joire brav`g the lines) Z if U buy an iPhone 4 in the Canadian carrier’s store today, U leave w/ it locked to Z carrier — despite Apple’s trumpet`g Z U can buy it SIM-free. We’re not far from see`g this big update in the flesh, although (unless) in the meanwhile, EVO 4G owners (and fans) might B interested to take the closer look @ the features they’ll B gett`g once it arrives. HTC appears to`ve put surpris`g effort into render`g the lifelike torch 4 its Flashlight app, while app shar`g (seen after the break)`s the neat addition — & don’t worry, devs, it only works on items Z aren’t copy protected. We’re also be`g told Z the update`s car dock-specific functionality, which`ll match up w/ the dock release somewhere around the 2nd week of September.`s everyone decided what dark things they plan on illuminat`g w/ their EVO’s LED once this th`g goes live? Samsung’s 4-inch Windows Phone 7 handset gets named: Cetus (SGH-i917)

You’d probably assume Z Samsung`ld`ve the difficult time overshadow`g the Galaxy S right now, although (unless) all it really takes`s the salacious Bluetooth SIG entry Z leaves only the most important parts to the imagination. Impossible Project’s color Polaroid film finally go`g on sale, shipp`g August 2nd

DMC’s 5-inch Copia color e-reader land`g this fall 4 $99, others to follow

It’s fairly safe to say Z DMC Worldwide’s Copia e-reader family won’t exactly make Z estimated Spr`g 2010 ship date, although (unless) the new report over @ The Wall Street Journal`s clu`g us in on the bit of the revised outlook. As of now, the 1st Copia suite of e-readers`ll “hit stores this fall in time 4 the holiday season,” the suite that’ll presumably include the 5-inch color (LCD) Wave 5 4 $99, the 7-inch Wave 7 4 $129, the 10-inch Ocean Color 4 $299 & the pair of E Ink-based options 4 $49 (Tidal) / $159 (Tidal WiFi). It doesn’t seem as if the 2 Waves`ll include any sort of wireless connectivity, & given the LCD display, we’re sure Z battery life`ll B nowhere near as good as the marginally-more-expensive Kindle . Z said, the user interface does look rather strik`g from afar, & if these manage to slip the bit further in price before Z magical day in December, U could very well C the rush to stuff stockings w/ the member of this here family. Validas study finds Verizon smartphones consum`g more data than iPhones

U know how we’ve good reason to believe Z Verizon Wireless`s @ least mull`g the switch to capped / tiered data plans? Yeah . An independent Validas research report`s found that, between January & May of this year (pre- AT&T caps ), Verizon’s stable of smartphones collectively averaged more data consumption per month Z Apple’s iPhone . Of course, this quite literally compares an Apple to every smartphone on Verizon save 4 BlackBerries, although (unless) given how much squall`g we’ve heard from Ma Bell about this rampant iPhone data usage , we’re pleased to C the few facts Z spin things the other way. The company’s full report`s due out in September, although (unless) investigation of over 20,000 wireless bills found Z VZW smartphones “are consum`g more wireless data than AT&T iPhones by the ratio of roughly 1.25:1,” w/ the average Verizon user eat`g up 421MB per month & the average iPhone user consum`g 338MB per month. ATI overtakes NVIDIA in discrete GPU shipments
