Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes says Apple’s 99-cent rental model threatens sales

Well, this isn’t go`g to B surpris`g to many, although (unless) certain executives of certain big studios & networks aren’t wast`g anytime lett`g everybody know what they think of Apple’s new 99-cent rental model 4 the Apple TV . If you’ve read our review of the tiny new iOS device, you’re already aware Z 1 of Apple’s biggest challenges w/ the product`s gett`g the content providers on board 4 such the reduced price — so far, the company’s managed to pull in ABC, Disney, Fox, & the BBC — although (unless) Jobs`s said Z studios`ll quickly “see the light” & join up. Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes seems to disagree, however. “How can U justify rent`g your first-run TV shows individually 4 99 cents an episode & thereby jeopardize the sale of the same shows as the series to branded networks Z pay hundreds of millions of dollars & make those shows available to loyal viewers 4 free?” Bewkes recently asked, join`g the now grow`g chorus of executives to decry the new scheme. Jeff Zucker recently said he thought Apple’s 99-cent rentals “devalue” the content, while Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman said the rental model`s “not good.” Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes says Apple’s 99-cent rental model threatens sales originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 19:06:00 EDT. Nokia N8 vs. iPhone 4: camera showdown

What’s the 1st th`g U`lddo when U get the N8 ? Consider`g it packs the biggest image sensor embedded in the phone yet, Carl Zeiss optics, & an eight-digit pixel count, it seemed obvious to us Z the answer`s to take it on the picture- & video-tak`g stroll around London. On our way out V saw our iPhone 4 look`g all sad & lonely, so V went ahead & brought it along as well. Below you`ll find 1 gallery of pure, unadulterated N8 sample shots, another interspersed w/ the iPhone’s results 4 comparison’s sake, & the final 1 w/ side-by-side 100 percent crops from each image taker. Once you’ve digested all of those, V suggest hopp`g past the break & tuck`g into some tasty video comparison action as well. Naturally, all the images R entirely unretouched (but 4 our masterly watermarking) & the iPhone 4′s HDR hocus pocus`s left off. We’ve also provided the zip file contain`g all the full-res imagery shot w/ the N8 in the link below. the quick note`s also merited about the N8′s resolution. The sensor’s display ratio`s 4:3, which means Z full 12 megapixel shots R only available in those dimensions

Apple TV vs Roku HD… fight!

2 tiny black 720p boxes, 2 interest`g choices. The $59 Roku HD`ll put Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand & Roku’s 75 other content channels on your TV quickly & easily, while the $99 Apple TV offers up iTunes rentals, Netflix, & eventually AirPlay stream`g from your iPad or iPhone. (You could step up to the Roku XDS w/ 1080p support 4 $99, although (unless) V don’t think the extra money`ll B really worth it until the USB playback channel`s released & / or there’s more useful 1080p content available.) It’s the tough decision, so check out our Apple TV review or our Roku XDS review & just try to make up your mind. Then again, U could grab ‘em both & still not break the bank. CSL’s $500 Spice Mi700 DroidPad runs Froyo, looks awfully familiar

Seen this fellow before? Look closer. See`g any similarities? 4 all intents & purposes, CSL’s new Spice Mi700 DroidPad`s just the rebadged Viewpad 7 / Camangi FM600 , & given Z CSL`s also responsible 4 manufactur`g the JooJoo , we’d say these guys know the th`g or 2 about build`g the tablet. The device ships w/ Qualcomm’s 600MHz MSM722, stock Android 2.2 (Froyo), the same nasty widgets Z ship on FM600, the total lack of Flash support & no access to paid apps via the App Market. There’s also the 3 megapixel camera on the rear, the VGA webcam on the front, WVGA capacitive touchpanel (7-inch), inbuilt WiFi / WWAN / Bluetooth, the microSD card slot & the 3.5mm headphone jack. It’s said to B available start`g this month 4 $500, although (unless) early reviews aren’t exactly giv`g it 2 thumbs up — crank ‘er down to $250 & V suspect those views`ll shift. Sony brings TomTom to US-bound XNV-770BT & XNV-660BT in-dash head units

V heard back @ IFA Z Sony`s mak`g the absolutely brilliant move of incorporat`g the market lead`g navigational system into its Xplod line of in-dash A/V units, & now Z love`s be`g shipped across the Atlantic (or the Pacific, if you’re tak`g the scenic route) in the form of the XNV-770BT & XNV-660BT. The beautiful Sony / TomTom partnership`ll soon B assist`g clueless American motorists when both of the previously mentioned units ship in November, w/ the 770BT offer`g the 7-inch capacitive touchscreen & the 660BT stepp`g down to the 6.1-incher. They’ll both feature rear USB ports 4 iDevice connections, support 4 multi-channel audio playback & most importantly, pre-loaded maps of US & Canadian roadways. TomTom claims Z its maps offer more than 1 million more miles of roads than other GPS brands in America alone, & buyers`ll also B treated to familiar TomTom extras like IQ Routes, Advanced Lane Guidance, MapShare & six million POIs. V still wish Garmin would’ve received the nod here, although (unless) it’s certainly better than some white label system — check ‘em soon 4 $1,300 & $1,000 in order of mention. HTC Spark leaked in the wild, shows off plenty of WP7 goodness

Well, it`s only the matter of time — 1st the leaked press shots of this elusive HTC Spark (although possibly misidentified as the Mondrian back then — note the shinier earpiece in the leaked AT&T ad), & now the real th`g`s in the hands of some lucky hardware tester. Fortunately 4 us, this guy also happens to`ve the naughty friend over @ xda-developers — you’ll C in his photos Z HTC Hub`s alive & well, although (unless) otherwise, there’s not much info com`g out of here. iRobot patents "Celestial Navigation System" 4 the Roomba

While Roomba’s automated approach to floor clean`g might’ve`en novel 4 its day, its random bumbl`g`s start`g to look dated, particularly in comparison to laser-guided, ultra smart vacuums like the Neato XV-11 . Well, iRobot`s naturally not go`g to take this ly`g down, & the company`s received the patent 4 the new “Celestial Navigation System” based on IR beacons bounced off walls & ceilings Z the Roomba can track & calculate its position from. It doesn’t sound as fancy as Neato’s completely self-contained system, & it’ll require the setup of multiple beacons throughout the house to make the bot self-sufficient, although (unless) we’re guess`g it requires less process`g & gadgetry on board to pull off — which hopefully means Roomba can stuff this into bots cheaper than Neato’s $400 XV-11. Mint , which`s supposed to ship this summer from Evolution Robotics, uses the similar system to the 1 iRobot`s propos`g and`s the rumored price of under $250. iRobot patents “Celestial Navigation System” 4 the Roomba originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 09:52:00 EDT. Samsung AQ100 reviewed & found partially-worthy of Flipper glamour shots

PhotographyBlog`s indulged us w/ the thorough review of Samsung’s 12.2 megapixel WP10 waterproof compact — known as the AQ100 stateside — & their takeaways R mixed. 1 major concern`s Z the screen misleadingly makes photos appear overexposed. Its slow 5x zoom, run of the mill feature set & measly battery life good 4 approximately 150 shots per charge doesn’t improve the situation; nor does the lack of separate charger 4 juic`g dead spares while us`g the camera. Z said, an included HDMI port, the clever SmartAuto shoot`g mode, & relatively quick 2 2nd start up time does help balance the equation. Throw in the fact Z it’s waterproof up to 3 meters, takes decent imagery, and`s an MSRP of $199 w/ street prices dipp`g even lower & they concede it’s not the terrible proposition as the laid-back compact. Whether it’s the better deal than the slew of other Cousteau-worthy options released this year such as the Finepix XP10 , Sony TX5 , or Pentax Optio w90`s still someth`g we’ll leave U to mull over. Can U really quantify the value of your camera color match`g the water you’re shoot`g in though? 4 more details, read the full review @ the source link below. Apple TV restores in iTunes via micro-USB, UI hacked onto iPod touch (video)

It sure didn’t take long 4 the dev community to hack into Apple TV’s iOS build. 1 of the 1st payouts`s the port of Apple TV’s “lowtide” 10-foot user interface to an iPod touch as briefly demonstrated in the 1st video after the break. While not very useful on such the small display, Z could change when ported to the iPad’s bigger 10-inch display. In fact, Z might B Apple’s plan accord`g to our friend Erica Sadun who’s`en busily spelunk`g the Apple TV’s disk image. She posits Z the iPad could launch the lowtide UI when respond`g to AirPlay requests in the future iOS build. Another minor victory`s achieved by TUAW reader Arix who spliced the Apple TV’s AirPlay daemon onto the jailbroken iPhone 3GS thus allow`g it to receive AirPlay streams (second video). although (unless) the best news of all, perhaps,`s the ability to restore the Apple TV in iTunes by connect`g its micro-USB port to your computer.

QNAP intros 1080p-capable NMP-1000P network multimedia player

It’s the minor refresh, although (unless) the refresh nonetheless. If you’ll recall, V saw the original NMP-1000 break cover @ CeBIT 2009 , & now Z we’re 1.5 years in the future, the QNAP NMP-1000P`s mak`g its debut 4 those who crave 1080p. Judg`g from the exterior, little`s changed from then until now, although (unless) the revamped innards may B of interest — there’s the Sigma Designs SMP8643 SoC, the 667MHz CPU w/ float`g point processor, support 4 1080/24p playback & WiFi integration if U spr`g 4 an optional adapter. You’ll also get the revised user interface, local & internet-based content stream`g & room 4 the user-supplied 3.5-inch SATA hard drive, not to mention compatibility w/ just about every file format under the sun. Six Android browsers enter the ring, only 1 reigns supreme

Choice`s the good thing, & Android users certainly`ve the lot of choices. Default launcher or Launcher Pro? Fancy animated live wallpaper or static picture of adorable puppies? The 2.1 & 2.2 stock browsers entered, along w/ Skyfire 2.0 , Opera Mini , Dolphin HD, & Mozilla Fennec (the pre-beta release of what could br`g Firefox to your phone). The winner? Apple TV review (2010)

You’ve`en waiting, & it’s finally here: the Apple TV review. Months before Steve Jobs announced the new set top box @ Apple’s annual fall event , we`d`en report`g on news Z the company`ld strike out again into the TV market, offer`g the small, low-cost box Z`d more in common w/ the iPhone than the iMac. When those rumors came to fruition, V were presented w/ the completely revamped Apple TV — the tiny black puck of the device priced @ the stagger`g $99, & centered around the handful of completely new ideas (for the folks in Cupertino @ least) about gett`g content onto your TV screen. The first`s the new rental system which allows U to nab brand new TV shows @ $0.99 the rental, & HD movies 4 $4.99 the go (or $3.99 4 older titles). & Z includes new releases the same day DVDs hit shelves (or Netflix distribution centers). Speak`g of Netflix, the new Apple TV also features the rental service’s “Watch Instantly” as the wholly integrated component of its offerings, alongside the new function the company calls AirPlay which`ll allow U to “push” video & audio content from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch w/ the tap of the button. On top of that, the new ATV streamlines shar`g from your home computers or laptops, mak`g gett`g content U own onto your TV dead simple. Just weeks after hear`g about the similar issue w/ the EVO 4G, scores of Clear at-home WiMAX users R now up in arms over apparent throttl`g on certain accounts. As the story goes, it seems as if the company`s pull`g back on upload & download speeds (from 10Mbps to around 0.25Mbps) 4 users who`ve consumed between 7GB & 10GB in the month, which`s comically low even compared to Comcast’s hated 250GB / month usage cap . Forum users R find`g customer service lines to B no help whatsoever, & some digg`g`s found Z this may all B the part of the network traffic administration program that’s ongo`g within Clearwire.`ve any of U seen similar issues? OCZ Ibis touts 2GBps High Speed Data Link, vanquishes SSD competition

What’s after ludicrous speed? If U ask OCZ, the answer`s HSDL speed, which`s the company’s new interface idea 4 bypass`g the bandwidth limitations of standard SATA/SAS interconnects. Us`g the high-quality SAS cable to hook up its new Ibis drive to the PCI Express host card, OCZ`s managed to deliver the cool 2GBps of total bandwidth — that’s 1 gigabyte up & 1 gigabyte down… every second. In order to feed this massive data pipe, the company’s gone & stacked 4 SandForce SF-1200 controllers inside the Ibis & RAIDed them together 4 good measure too. The upshot isn’t too dramatic 4 desktop applications, where’ll you’ll encounter performance that’s merely world-beat`g — 373MBps read & 323MBps write — although (unless) if U throw in some deeper queues & enterprise-level workloads you’ll B able to squeeze out 804MBps reads & 675MBps writes. Needless to say, the Ibis scooped up many the plaudit in early reviews, & though it may B expensive @ $529 4 100GB, it still seems to represent good value 4 those who`ve the workloads to saturate its High Speed Data Link.

Dell launch`g 7-inch Android tablet in ‘next few weeks,’ 10-incher to follow the few months later

Good news, folks. It’s look`g like the tablet pool`ll B enriched w/ another 7-inch contender, runn`g Android, within only the few weeks. The Wall Street Journal cites Dell’s Greater China President Amit Midha as say`g Z the 7-inch slate V witnessed Michael teas`g the few short days ago`ll B w/ us “very, very soon.” Reiterat`g earlier promises of the family of tablets , Midha claims there’ll B “a whole slew” of new devices emerg`g from Dell’s labs over the next 6 to 12 months, which`ll include 10-inch , 4-inch & 3-inch form factors. Sony A55/A33 video record`g limited by overheat`g sensor

So this`s why the promo video accompany`g Sony’s launch of the A55 & A33`s set against the snowy backdrop. It turns out Z these oh-so-revolutionary translucent mirror shooters can’t keep their cool 4 any longer than 11 minutes when record`g video @ the temperature of 20 degrees Celsius w/ Image Stabilization turned on. The A55`s even quicker to overheat @ 9 minutes, though it’s worth not`g Z with`s switched off U can obtain the maximum of nearly half an hour of footage — provided the weather doesn’t heat up. Sony blames this on the APS-C-sized sensor within, & it’ true Z plenty of DSLRs come w/ artificial time limits — our D5000 won’t let us get past 5 minutes however V try to sweet-talk it — although (unless) it’s an irksome limitation to consider if you’re think`g of buy`g either of these Alphas 4 their otherwise awesome video capabilities . It’s tough 4 yet another Flip -like camcorder to stand out these days, although (unless) GE might just stand the better chance than most w/ its new DV1 model, which adds the waterproof, shockproof enclosure to the familiar form factor. Star Wars flicks to C 3D re-release, start`g w/ Episode 1 in 2012

The Star Wars series hasn’t even hit Blu-ray yet , although (unless) The Hollywood Reporter reports sources say`g George Lucas definitely intends to refill his money pit in 2012 by bring`g out the movies, 1 each year, in 3D.
