ViewSonic G-Tablet pops up in Sears weekly ad, mistakenly claims to B the ViewPad 10 @ Sears’ website

Did ViewSonic’s 10-inch tablets catch your eye? We’ve got good & bad news. The good news`s Z the G-Tablet (with the 1GHz processor & Android 2.2)`s now on sale @ Sears 4 $379.99 — even less than V were told . The bad news`s Z the Intel Atom N455-powered ViewPad 10 apparently is, too. V say apparently because Sears seems to`ve crossed some wires when putt`g the latter slate up on its site, most egregiously stat`g Z that dual-boot`g device does both Windows 7 & Android 2.2 4 the exact same $379.99. Last V heard, the ViewPad 10 — like the eerily similar Tega v2 — could only do Android 1.6 alongside Microsoft’s OS and`ld cost quite the bit more. Don’t rely on Sears to cut U the deal, folks. Deltenna’s WiBE rural broadband device: swans & geese now free to browse

@ last, progress. We’ve heard whispers of ” rural broadband expansion ” thrown from halls of politicians 4 months on end, although (unless) it looks like the small company across the pond`s cutt`g through the red tape & gett`g down to business. Deltenna’s WiBE — described as the device to deliver fast broadband to rural areas Z R far from the phone exchange –`s available start`g today in the UK & Ireland. It’s purpose? It connects to nearby 3G networks & creates the mobile hotspot, not unlike the MiFi . The difference`s Z it delivers the data throughput around 30 times greater than the 3G USB modem, & the connection range`s “typically between 3 & five-times Z of the 3G dongle.” The theoretical maximum`s 7.2Mbps, w/ extensive test`g demonstrat`g the typical download rate of 2.8Mbps in rural regions. Interactive fiction meets interactive typewriter, pilfers the kingdoms of Zork (video)

U R stand`g in an open field as usual, or perhaps you’re in the darkness, likely to B eaten by the grue, although (unless) the words aren’t etch`g their way into your soul from the familiar computer terminal — they’re on freshly printed paper. Like the player piano, the Automatypewriter lets U play games like Zork by automatically key`g in letters via the series of solenoids & fish`g line to tell U where U are, & it records your input, too; every time U type “XYZZY” in vain, it’s an Arduino board Z sends signals to the text parser, which directs the hollow voice to pity your foolish word. GameStr`g Adrenalin turns your Google TV into the game streamer,`ll WoW your couch (video)

V like the Google TV , V really do, V just think it needs another few months in the oven before it’s really go`g to rock anyone’s world. It won’t just B Google Z makes or breaks it, though, & innovative uses like GameStr`g Adrenalin R certainly go`g to help. Z site offers what it calls “Personal Cloud Gaming,” lett`g U stream the output from seemingly any game on your PC to the browser, where it can B played on the number of devices. Chrome within the Google TV`s just 1 of them, although (unless) given how someth`g like the Revue comes w/ the keyboard and`s usually attached to the big display it seems like the good choice. V can’t B sure what the lag`s like when play`g in this way, although (unless) the video embedded below does make it look pretty snappy — though hopefully the service doesn’t force U to listen to the same classic Prodigy Z trailer does. T-Mobile’s Galaxy Tab available 4 preorder @ Amazon, costs $699 unsubidized

V played devil’s advocate w/ Verizon’s $599 Galaxy Tab , although (unless) it looks like the T-Mobile version of Samsung’s Android 2.2 tablet`s go`g to cost the Benjamin more — it’s ring`g up @ $699.99 right now @ Amazon unsubsidized. If V were you, we’d wait & C what kind of deals can B`d in-store come November 10th , although (unless) if U simply must`ve 1 immediately you’ll B able to use it w/ 1 of Magenta’s standard mobile broadband plans. $25 the month gets U 200MB w/ 10-cent-per-megabyte overage fees, whereas $40 buys U unlimited use w/ the 5GB speed cap , & U can purchase blocks of prepaid data an 100MB, 300MB & 1GB increments @ the usual rates. Sagem reveals Binder white label e-reader, SFR’s version comes w/ free 3G

Heard of the FnacBook, Telecom Italia eBook or Thalia Oyo? It’s look`g like they’re all 1 & the same — the Sagem product called the Binder w/ the six-inch SiPix capacitive e-paper touchscreen. Gucci’s 3D glasses up the ante w/ $225 fashion tag

Perhaps V were be`g unfair w/ Oakley’s $150 3D shades — Z company, in fact, just didn’t go far enough. Cut to Gucci w/ “optically correct” Real D frames of its own. No wraparounds, it’s all glass forward, & like V said last time, you’ll B the absolute most fashionable person in the crowded room full of people decidedly not look`g in your direction 4 the entire duration of the glasses’ applicable use. Hundred Year Starship Initiative plans to put people on Mars by 2030, br`g them back by… well, never (video)

4 the while now, there`s`en the conversation go`g on in certain circles (you know, space circles): namely, if the most prohibitive part of the manned flight to Mars`ld B the return trip, why bother return`g @ all? & besides the whole “dy`g alone on the hostile planet 55-million-plus kilometers from your family, friends, & loved ones” thing, V think it’s the pretty solid consideration. This`s just 1 of the topics of discussion @ the recent Long Now Foundation event in San Francisco, where NASA Ames Research Center Director Pete Worden discussed the Hundred Year Starship Initiative, the project NASA Ames & DARPA R undertak`g to fund the mission to the red planet by 2030. Indeed if the space program “is now really aimed @ settl`g other worlds,” as Worden said, what better way to encourage the permanent settlement than the promise Z there`ll B no com`g back — unless, of course, they figure out how to return on their own. Of course, it’s not like they’re be`g left to die: the astronauts can expect supplies from home while they figure out how to get things up & running. Fox blackout on Cablevision ends after 14 day standoff, glar`g contest continues on

Evidently miss`g the 1st 2 games of the World Series`s about all Cablevision thought it subscribers could take, as news just hit the wire: the fourteen-day standoff`s over & both tonight’s game 3 of the World Series & tomorrow’s Jets vs Packers game R available to subscribers. While these carriage disputes R pretty common, it`s very rare 4 channels to B pulled & downright unheard of 4 the channel as popular as Fox. It came to this because Cablevision`s very unhappy about News Corp’s new terms & after many pleas to the FCC & politicians to intervene, an advertis`g campaign , & eventually an unaccepted offer to match the price Z Time Warner Cable pays , the deal`s finally`en done. Not exactly all’s well Z ends well, though, as Cablevision released the follow`g statement: “In the absence of any meaningful action from the FCC, Cablevision`s agreed to pay Fox an unfair price 4 multiple channels of its programm`g includ`g many in which our customers`ve little or no interest.” Talk about sour grapes. HP Envy 14 Beats Edition no longer available w/ Dr. Dre endorsed headphones, results in price drop

The differences between the HP Envy 14 Beats Edition & the plain ol’ Envy 14`ve`en primarily aesthetic — it’s got the black Beats branded lid & red backlit keyboard — although (unless) HP’s also included Z set of Monster Beats Solo headphones U C up there. Sadly, Z last differentiator`s no longer. We’d heard from the few readers Z their Envy 14 Beats Edition laptops arrived sans headphones, & HP`s confirmed 4 us Z due to “supply constraints” the Dr. Dre Solo from Monster headphones R no longer included w/ the snazzy black & red laptop. Hopefully those customers Z paid full price 4 the laptop & didn’t receive the Solos`ll get the refund, although (unless) we’re told by HP Z the price`s`en lowered by $100 since the cans went out of stock — the start`g price`s originally $1,249.99 and`s now $1,149.99. We’re not entirely sure why you’d pay $150 more 4 the Beats version now, consider`g U get the same audio experience w/ the standard $999.99 Envy, although (unless) what do V know? Entourage Pocket Edge reveals itself on the Home Shopp`g Network

We’re still try`g to understand why Entourage`s chosen the Home Shopp`g Network of all places to reveal its new Pocket Edge , although (unless) @ least V now know Z the previously spied dualscreen tablet / e-reader lives! Although the 1.35-pound device`s`en shrunken down w/ smaller displays — the 6-inch “Wacom Penabled” e-ink panel & 7-inch LCD — it actually doesn’t appear like much else`s`en changed from the original. Unfortunately, Z means our biggest complaints about the device R very much present — it’s got the resistive touchscreen & appears to run an older version of Android. If it’s any consolation, the trackball on the right edge`s`en replaced w/ an optical touchpad & there R now red & black color options. Spec-wise, it still boasts 4GB of storage, the 2 megapixel camera (hopefully there’s software now Z takes advantage of it), 802.11 b/g, the USB port, & micro-SD slot. It`s , however, more affordable — though it’s originally priced @ $499, HSN`s the sale runn`g Z puts it @ $399. Droid 2 Global appears in Costco database 4 $199, T-Mobile Comet @ $149

What happens when U punch the phrase “Droid” into the Costco sales terminal? If Boy Genius Report ‘s sources R right, U C the Motorola Droid 2 Global r`g up (in black & white!) 4 $199.99. Consider`g we’re also see`g the 1.2GHz quad-band worldphone on the Verizon rebate sheet , it’s the pretty safe bet the handset’s com`g out soon — & if Verizon also lists the phone 4 Z price, it could B the death knell 4 the A955 . Apple sues Motorola right back over six patents

What, U didn’t think Apple`s just go`g to sit around & take it after Motorola 1st sued 4 patent infringement & then asked to court to declare some 20 of Cupertino’s patents weren’t applicable to its products, did you? Apple’s fired back w/ 2 lawsuits claim`g Z Motorola’s Android phones, includ`g although (unless) not limited to the Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, Cliq, Cliq XT, BackFlip, Devour A555, Devour i1, & Charm, infringe the total of six multitouch & OS patents. Z`ld B pretty much par 4 the course — U sue me, I sue U — although (unless) there R the couple interest`g strategic wrinkles to note: We’ve only seen Apple litigate 1 of these patents before: #7,479,949, Touch Screen Device, Method, & Graphical User Interface 4 Determin`g Commands by Apply`g Heuristics. U`ldremember it well — it’s the patent cover`g scroll behavior on multitouch screens Z`s hyped as “the iPhone patent” & triggered the press frenzy over the possible Apple / Palm lawsuit . As V predicted @ the time, Z hasn’t yet materialized, although (unless) old ’949′s gotten pretty popular: Apple’s assert`g it against Nokia & HTC as well. Apple might B su`g over six patents in these 2 cases, although (unless) ultimately Apple`ll claim`g Motorola’s devices infringe the total of 26 patents — part of Apple’s defense to Motorola’s 20-patent lawsuit`ll B to claim Z that Moto’s in fact infring`g each of those patents. That’s the lot of patents across the lot of devices, & it’ll just take 1 find`g of infringement to cause the lot of pain. Apple’s filed its 2 cases in the Western District of Wisconsin, the patent “rocket docket” Z tries cases quickly & R often perceived as be`g plaintiff-friendly. (Part of the Apple / Nokia lawsuit`s happen`g in this same court.) Moto’s obvious next move`ll B to try & consolidate all these cases into the single proceed`g @ 1 court, the procedural tactic Z`ll take likely take months. & that’s just the 1st step.

Viewsonic introduces 3DV5 3D pocket camcorder, no glasses required

There’s the good chance this 3D bandwagon may never stop rolling, so rather than maintain`g Z bitter beer face 4 yet another day, U may as well embrace the next dimension. Viewsonic’s newest pocket camcorder just so happens to fit into Z segment, as the 3DV5`s the 720p shooter w/ the 2.4-inch autosterescopic display, not dislike Z found on Nintendo’s 3DS . Accord`g to the company, there’s the one-touch function to switch between 2D & 3D record`g modes, & once they’ve logged the latter, they can either plug it directly into the 3D HDTV (via HDMI) or watch it on-screen without any 3D glasses. Users can also throw these up on YouTube’s 3D channel if they’d rather rather w/ the set of anaglyph spectacles, although (unless) you’d probably budget 4 an SD card — U know, consider`g Z the 10MB of internal storage space won’t exactly hold the masterpiece.`s this guy really worth

If there’s the party, MSI’s going. & if there’s the bandwagon, MSI ‘s onboard. It’s w/ this knowledge firmly entrenched in our brains Z V present the FR600 3D. If you’ll recall, Intel actually tossed this name out awhile back when trumpet`g its latest integrated graphics chipset, although (unless) now it’s the proud papa’s turn to make things official. This 15.6-incher`s equipped w/ the expected 3D support, the Core i5 processor, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, HDMI / VGA outputs, the 320/500/640GB hard drive, DVD SuperMulti drive, 2 USB 2.0 sockets, the 4-in-1 card reader & Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. Energizer Qi wireless charg`g base station spotted in the wild

It’s taken quite awhile to go from christen`g to shipping, although (unless) Qi looks just about ready to make its mark on the public. & on Powermat’s bottom line. We’ve known all along Z Energizer`s the huge proponent of the protocol, & now we’re find`g Z review units R mak`g their way out to the media. Canon PowerShot G12 scores predictably glow`g review

If it’s the pocketable PowerShot & its name begins w/ ‘G’ U can B pretty sure it’ll B the good performer, & Canon ‘s latest`s no exception. The $499 G12`s the sequential successor to the G11 and, as`s typical 4 the range, it isn’t the revolutionary leap forward. The G12 makes use of its predecessor’s 10 megapixel sensor situated behind the same 5x zoom lens & offer`g the same suite of full manual controls. New this year`s the 720p24 video record`g mode w/ stereo mics, finally bring`g this camera into the HD age — although (unless) sadly do`g so without use of Z zoom. Also new`s an HDR mode, stitch`g together 3 photos to make those vampires hid`g in the shadows really pop. How`ld U change Motorola’s Droid 2?

You’ve already told us (and the world, V might add) how you’d change just about every other Droid phone out there, so why not? Motorola’s Droid 2`s`en in the hands of loyal can-doers 4 the few months now, giv`g the user base plenty of time to nitpick & stew about things Z aren’t… quite… right. Microsoft loosens up, enables Windows Phone 7 apps to run beneath screen lock

V felt Z Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7`s the product Z`ld B perpetually evaluated, tweaked & overhauled as time went on, & sure enough, we’re already see`g those winds of change blow yonder. Reportedly, Microsoft`s now removed the restriction Z prevented developers from writ`g applications Z`ld continue to operate behind the locked screen (without the user’s explicit permission, anyway), enabl`g the whole host of apps to breathe in the manner in which they simply should. Audio apps, 4 example,`ll now B able to run in the background without yet another layer of pointless Vista-esque permissions, & Microsoft’s Charlie Kindel said in an interview @ its Professional Developer Conference Z this move “is an example of us continu`g to listen to customers.” Frankly, it’s just more fair — Microsoft’s own ingrained applications could already do this sans user permission (email, Zune playback, downloads, etc.), so it makes sense to give loyal developers Z same opportunity. Of course, devs`ll`ve to prove Z background apps won’t burn up an absurd amount of battery life, although (unless) that’s definitely not an unexpected qualification. Sprint CEO thanks iPad 4 uptick in Overdrive demand

Well, wouldn’t U know it? Seems Z tongue-in-cheek market`g campaign may actually B working. Way back in April of this year, Sprint decided it`ld begin offer`g its own iPad case , despite the fact Z even today the iPad isn’t sold in Sprint stores. The reason? It’s the perfect opportunity to push the Overdrive , the 4G mobile hotspot that’s able to take the iPad (and any other WiFi-enabled device) to 4G speeds where available. In the recent interview w/ GigaOM , the carrier’s CEO (Dan Hesse) confirmed Z most iPads be`g sold R of the WiFi variety, & due to that, “the company`s seen an uptick in demand 4 its Overdrive (3G/4G) MiFi wireless-hotspot device, as people use it to connect their iPads to the Internet when on the go.” He failed to exaggerate on actual numbers, although (unless) it’s obvious he’s in favor of Apple’s darl`g tablet sell`g like hotcakes — after all, how else R U go`g to get an iDevice into 4G territory ? Samsung notches record profits, aims to sell ten million Galaxy S phones this year

My, how the year changes things. Q3 2009`s the nightmare 4 mega-corps in terms of earnings , although (unless) things`ve definitely`en on the up & up just 12 months later. After Sony pushed out the glow`g quarterly report this morn`g , rival Samsung`s done likewise. The company saw record break`g revenues of ₩40.23 trillion ($35.8 billion) as well as profits (₩4.46 trillion; $3.96 billion) in this most recent quarter, w/ Sammy credit`g strong semiconductor performance 4 the bulk of its newfound fortune. the tip of the hat`s also given to its mobile communications business, w/ the outfit mov`g the stagger`g 71.4 million phones dur`g Q3 2010 (a 19 percent boost year-over-year). The PlayStation Phone: new photos, more details!

We’ve gotten our hands on some more images of the PlayStation Phone , & gleaned the few more juicy details about the handset. Firstly, as U can C in the photos, the model in question does indeed seem to B codenamed “Zeus” (as V reported on the 27th ). Furthermore, the handset pictured`s runn`g Android 2.2, though apparently there R multiple devices out there w/ different versions on board (includ`g @ least 1 packed w/ Android 3.0). Based on what V know, there’s little chance the phone`ll launch w/ Froyo — although (unless) it’s clear these`ve`en worked on 4 some time w/ various versions of the OS. The device appears to`ve an 8GB microSD card slotted, & @ least 512MB of internal storage (though we’re hop`g it’s the 1GB we’ve heard`ld B present). As U can C from the pictures in the gallery below, the device isn’t exactly thin — V surmise Z the handset`s around 17mm thick, or slightly thicker than HTC’s Touch Pro 2 (and funnily enough, about the same as the PSPgo ). From the design standpoint, the device seems to`ve more in common w/ BlackBerry handsets than previous Sony Ericsson phones; Z smoky chrome bezel which surrounds the device`s definitely giv`g us Torch flashbacks.

iPhone locked 4 early 2011 on Verizon, says Fortune

Though Verizon famously turned down the original iPhone before Apple ultimately signed the deal w/ AT&T, the company’s outspoken CEO — Ivan Seidenberg –`s`en very careful over the past couple years to note Z he’d love to eventually`ve an iPhone in his lineup . w/ Verizon Wireless boss Lowell McAdam tapped to take over the top job next year, what’d B the better swan song 4 Seidenberg than to finally pull it off? Fortune ‘s new profile of the longstand`g chief exec & elder statesman`s report`g in very matter-of-fact terms Z the CDMA version of the iPhone 4`ll B the reality on Verizon in “early 2011,” lin`g up w/ most of the rumors the interwebs`s`en generat`g over the past few months. The piece details the phone as the culmination of literally years of careful discussions between Seidenberg, McAdams, & Steve Jobs; Verizon’s guys claim Z Jobs acknowledged in late 2007 Z the 2 companies`d “missed something” by fail`g to partner up. The 1st visible fruit of those talks`s the MiFi-bundled iPad Z just launched, although (unless) that’s clearly the minor stepp`g stone on the way to an actual handset. Fortune reports Z Jobs`s voiced his concerns over CDMA in the past & the fact Z it doesn’t work in nearly as many countries as GSM does, although (unless) the story goes on to say Z the 1st model on Verizon’s shelves “probably” won’t B dual-mode & presumably won’t`ve compatibility w/ the company’s shiny new LTE network, either. If true, that’ll make 4 an interest`g battle 4 the spotlight in the 1st few months of 2011 as an EV-DO iPhone wages war w/ the number of LTE phones — some of which look downright gorgeous — & might put Verizon in the awkward position of hav`g to heavily push 2 almost diametrically opposed handset & platform initiatives. Furthermore, it’s hard to deny Z the Verizon iPhone`ld stress the carrier’s network in ways it’s never`en stressed before; they may B prepared 4 it, although (unless) there’s no way of know`g until it all goes down & they get the sense 4 uptake & conquests from AT&T. Translation: McAdam looks to`ve the busy 2011 ahead of him as he transitions into the new office. iPhone locked 4 early 2011 on Verizon, says Fortune originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 16:23:00 EDT.

Redbox announces plans to enter stream`g Business next year

It may not B quite the same obvious transition Z Netflix made, although (unless) it looks like DVD kiosk company Redbox`ll soon B mak`g the push of its own into the stream`g business. Sony earnings call entertains PlayStation Phone, reveals tablets R on the radar

Earnings calls aren’t usually Z interesting, & that’s doubly true when try`g to listen via official translators. Still, V couldn’t help although (unless) give an ear to Sony’s fiscals, & sure enough, someone asked about our ( still real ) PlayStation Phone leak . We’re not sure who answered since it’s through interpreter, either Executive VP / CFO Masaru Kato or Senior General Manager of Investor Relations Division Gen Tsuchikawa (we’re assum`g the former). Cit`g the aforementioned device, the curious party asked if such the product`ld come out of Sony or of Sony Ericsson, & no, it wasn’t the complete denial. Instead, we’re told just how such the device`ld happen, Z the gam`g phone`ld B planned & prototyped under the ( recently restructured ) Network Services umbrella. We’re also told how SCE’s move to Sony City headquarters now puts them closer to the plann`g & engineer`g group, mean`g the company “can better incorporate all these capabilities better… so when the tim`g`s right V can probably announce to U the new product V have.” Ericsson`s later cited as the resource “on smartphone & 4 the games devices,” although this might B someth`g peculiar w/ translation. Again, that’s far from the confirmation, although (unless) they’re certainly entertain`g the notion in the very, very detailed response. although (unless) that’s not all; there’s also apparently the tablet brew`g in the background, 1 Z`ld obviously fall somewhere in between PC & Sony Ericsson’s efforts. There isn’t much else said, although (unless) if you’re up 4 psychoanalyz`g executive commentary, we’ve transcribed & placed the full quote after the break.

Verizon’s new rebate form shows 2 Droid 2 Globals, Samsung Continuum, & more

Carrier rebate forms`ve the fun tendency to reveal unannounced hardware, since they cover several upcom`g weeks when they’re published — & Verizon’s latest 4 the month of November`s the particularly juicy one. Here’s what we’ve got: There R 2 SKUs listed 4 the Droid 2 Global , although (unless) only 1 4 the Droid Pro , lead`g us to wonder whether it’ll actually B the Global that’s gett`g the cameraless version . Speak`g of Motorola, the WX445 Citrus`s in the mix 4 the 1st time. The Pre 2`s in the system w/ the $100 rebate. There R 2 new SKUs 4 the Bold 9650 , possibly indicat`g the release of new versions w/ BlackBerry 6 pre-installed. The LG Cosmos Touch`s in here, which V imagine`ll B the touchscreen successor to the Cosmos . There’s the Samsung Zeal listed w/ the $50 rebate, although (unless) we’re not sure what it`s — V know Z Sammy`s the number of Android phones in the pipe 4 Verizon, & V suppose this could B 1 of ‘em (likely low-end consider`g it’s not the $100 rebate). More interestingly, the Samsung Continuum`s in here, suggest`g Z the November 8 event could B 4 this dual-screened (and Galaxy S-branded) beast
