Via Motors E-REV hybrid trucks power your commute & the job site too (video)

Hybrid cars`ve officially jumped the shark, bor`g drivers from coast to coast as they smugly hypermile wherever they’re going. Meanwhile, those w/ big trucks`ve`en relatively out of luck, hav`g to stop frequently 4 gas — & to scrape the remains of those little hybrids out of their fender wells. That’s chang`g soon, w/ Via Motors tak`g its rebranded Chevy trucks (dig Z fly`g V on the grille) & offer`g them to fleets in 2011, w/ sales to individuals com`g 2 years later (you can get in line now 4 $1,000 down). Big companies like, apparently, PG&E`ll B able to roll in these so-called E-REV trucks Z offer either 20 or 40 miles of electric range, augmented by an onboard generator. Yes, it’s the series hybrid layout similar in theory to the Volt , w/ the internal combustion engine charg`g the batteries which, in turn, send juice to the 268hp motor. Interestingly, though, Z generator can power other things as well, provid`g 120 or 240V to tools, lights, maybe even hot tubs if you’re the super cool contractor. No word on anticipated vehicle cost nor efficiency, although (unless) we’re not expect`g miracles on either front. Reserve Power: Paper 2010, The Inkgadget Review

Over the past 2 weeks we’ve`en incorporat`g the lightweight flexible technology into our workflow. Usually, of course, just about everyth`g V write`s routed through the processor, operat`g system & application & immediately reflected on an LCD us`g some multitask`g user interface. However, we`ve`en seek`g the way to organize to-do lists on the separate display so Z they R not lost in the course of the day’s work or tak`g up undue screen real estate. As it happens, V were invited to an exclusive press event extoll`g the latest version of paper. Paper`s the thin, foldable substance Z can accommodate the wide array of styli to produce words & graphics. The catch`s that, much like printer cartridges, these styli must B refilled w/ ink or replaced. although (unless) there`s the wide ecosystem of these devices Z R broadly available. The developers of paper`ve really put the lot of forethought into the wide array of uses

FTA awards $16.6 million in grants 4 fuel cell bus research

While V were jealously hung up on South Korea’s work`g electric bus system , Christmas apparently came early 4 the couple of lucky US fuel cell bus research projects — in the form of $16.6 million in Federal Transit Administration grants. Pasadena based Calstart snagged almost $10.2 million and`ll funnel 70 percent of the funds to develop`g the 1st phase of the low-cost, longer last`g fuel cell power system. Calstart`ll then spend its remain`g $2.9 million in partnership w/ the Chicago Regional Transit Authority to develop & test the viability of fuel cell bus fleets in cold climates. The Center 4 Transportation & the Environment in Atlanta`s the other project to hit the federal money gravy train. It received the hefty $6.4 million to spread across six different projects Z dabble in everyth`g from develop`g fast-charg`g 35-foot fuel cell buses, to similar lithium ion versions, to improv`g exist`g hybrid bus platforms. Federal pork 4 fuel cell DSLR development regrettably missed the cut. 4 the full scoop hit up the press release after the break. WakeMate sleep-aid recalled due to ‘exploding’ USB charger, gives new mean`g to be`g hot in the sack

Early this morning, Perfect 3rd Inc. — makers of the less than perfect WakeMate wristband — issued the recall 4 the sleep analyzer’s USB charger, which apparently`s the tendency to go up in smoke , & V don’t mean disappear. An e-mail sent out by the company’s CEO @ 12:30 AM states, “we were informed by the customer of the safety incident w/ the black USB chargers.” the little vague if U ask us, consider`g the video V received shows the device “smok`g after exploding.” The recall ensures Z the WakeMate itself`s perfectly safe, & Z the Chinese-manufactured USB cables R @ fault, although (unless) if U ask us, anyth`g Z`s supposed to help U sleep soundly shouldn’t put U in danger of catch`g fire. New image of Olympus E-PL2 leaks, shows off macro spotlight

We’ve already seen leaked images of the Olympus E-PL2, the much talked about follow up to the E-PL1 . The Micro 4 Thirds`s expected to boast the new 14-42mm f/3.5 – 5.6 kit lens, the ‘direct movie’ button, the high-resolution 3-inch display, & an optional Bluetooth model. From the new image above, however, V can C Z there`ll also B an optional ‘Medusa’ version of the cam w/ the closeup spotlight 4 all those insane macro shots you’ll undoubtedly B taking. The adjustable LED`ll also not require an extra battery, so this`s 1 add-on we’ll definitely B seriously considering. Kodachrome film`s seriously @ the end of its life — again

Kodachrome film`s iconic enough Z there`ve now`en several ‘ goodbye, Kodachrome ‘ news stories, & V just couldn’t resist 1 more. This time, our tale`s of Dwayne’s Photo in Parsons, Kansas (which we’ve`d occasion to reference once before ), the film process`g store which`s the distinction of be`g the final place to accept Kodachrome 4 development. The problem? The store`s`en flooded w/ packages of undeveloped film from all over the world as the window 4 its process`g comes to an end. It turns out Z hav`g Z distinction`ll get U hundreds of rolls of film the day, & Dwayne’s Photo said Z it`ld not process any films Z arrived after Thursday. Yes, Z`s yesterday, though the mail`s undoubtedly still arriving. Kodachrome film`s seriously @ the end of its life — again originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 31 Dec 2010 13:45:00 EDT.

Android still`s horrible text messag`g bugs that’ll get U fired, busted, or otherwise embarrassed

Pardon us if the headline`s the little sensational, although (unless) this`s 1 Z we’ve personally experienced — & it’s not pretty. 4 @ least the last couple versions, Android`s`en plagued w/ the couple extremely serious bugs in its text messag`g subsystem Z can ultimately end up caus`g U to text the wrong contact — even contacts Z you’ve never texted before. There appear to B the few failure modes; the 1 V definitely experience on the Gingerbread -powered Nexus S involves be`g routed to the wrong thread when U tap it either in the Notifications list or the master thread list in the Messag`g application, so if U don’t notice, you’ll end up fir`g the message to the wrong person. More seriously, though, there’s also an open issue in Android’s bug track`g system — inexplicably marked “medium” priority — where sent text messages can appear to B in the correct thread & still end up be`g sent to another contact altogether. In other words, unless U pull up the Message Details screen after the fact, U might not even know the grievous act you’ve committed until your boss, significant other, or best friend — make Z former best friend — texts U back. There seem to`ve`en some attempts on Google’s part over the year to fix it; V can’t confirm Z it still happens in 2.3, although (unless) 4 what it’s worth, the issue hasn’t`en marked resolved in Google Code… & it`s opened some six months ago. This`s akin to an alarm clock Z occasionally won’t go off ( we’ve`en there ) or the car Z randomly won’t let U turn the steer`g wheel — U simply cannot`ve the phone Z U can’t trust to communicate w/ the right people.

Just got the Windows Phone 7 handset? The best apps, accessories, & tips

Ah, so you’ve just`en given the Windows Phone 7 handset. If that’s what you’d`en begg`g 4 all this time, then many congratulations; although (unless) if not, don’t hit eBay just yet — sure, WP7′s range of apps`s comparatively limited w/ its recent 5,000 milestone , although (unless) hey, U gotta start somewhere, right? iPhonECG case monitors your heart rate to make sure you’re appropriately excited about CES

CES isn’t just about incrementally thinner or faster hardware, U know. Some people like to br`g legitimately innovative ideas to the show, such as this iPhonECG case, which does what its name suggests: it takes an ECG (electrocardiogram) read`g of your heart’s activity through the pair of electrodes & then communicates its findings to an iPhone 4 it can B attached to. V say it can B attached to an iPhone as communication`s done wirelessly, so you’ll probably B able to monitor your ticker’s rhythm without the Applephone pressed against your bosom. Then again, maybe U like that. It’s the free world, V don’t judge. We’ll B send`g out our most hairy-chested editor to give this th`g the proper test @ the Las Vegas convention next week. FastMac U-Socket delayed yet again, now supposedly shipp`g in January

Remember the $10 FastMac U-Socket Z 1st turned up way back in December of 2009 &`s then beset by the number of delays Z most recently led to the promised October ship date & inflated $20 price tag ? Well, it didn’t ship then either, although (unless) the company`s now apparently tell`g customers Z it’s really, finally gett`g ready to ship the USB-equipped power socket sometime next month (despite the note on the company’s website Z still says it’s shipp`g “mid-December”). Anyone order`g 1 now`ll apparently still`ve to wait the bit longer, though — the company apparently only expects things to return to “normal” by February. SBN Tech to show off Android-based IP Video Phone @ CES

Haven’t heard of SBN Tech? You’re not alone, although (unless) it looks like the company`s now set to make the rather valiant attempt of try`g to stand out from the pack of Android tablets @ CES next week. Its hook, however,`s Z its tablet isn’t actually the tablet, although (unless) an “IP Video Phone,” which may or may not B similar to the device pictured above Z the company’s`en show`g off recently. Of course, while the company may B tout`g it as the “video phone” 1st & foremost, the device appears to B the fairly standard Android tablet underneath Z guise — it packs the 10.1-inch 1,024 x 600 screen, an SD card slot 4 expansion, & the company notes Z you’ll also B able to use it 4 email, Twitter, Facebook & all your usual Android apps. Archos 7 Home Tablet sees revision 2, w/ Android 2.1 & faster 800MHz CPU

The Archos 7 Home Tablet`s someth`g of the disappointment, & Archos`s shipped bigger & better things since, although (unless) the firm isn’t done w/ the original affordable Android slate quite yet. We’ve confirmed w/ Archos Z the “v2″ revision`s now shipp`g in Europe w/ 3 things the original lacked — an accelerometer, the relatively recent version of Android (2.1) & an 800MHz Rockchip CPU. Make no mistake, those R still budget specs, & you’ll almost certainly still`ve to hack your own Android Market on to get the full quota of apps, although (unless) it’s not like you’re pay`g any more 4 the extra oomph. Clear iSpot discontinued already

Well, Z certainly didn’t last very long, did it? Looks like Clear`s already send`g its unusual iSpot product to the great WiMAX network in the sky less than 5 months after its introduction. Of course, it’s easy to understand why Clear`ld want to forget the iSpot ever existed: its MAC address filter`g`s easily defeated & plagued w/ reports Z even approved devices were be`g denied access, suggest`g Z the concept probably wasn’t the solid 1 in the 1st place. 4 what it’s worth, Clear retail stores R still sell`g through remain`g stock if you’re interested — & the company`ll maintain the supply of units 4 warranty replacements — although (unless) otherwise, you’re out of luck. Russia’s 1st GLONASS phone an ‘iPhone 4 competitor,’ except not really (video)

As the story goes, Russia-based AFK Sistema’s subsidiary Sitronics (along w/ US’ Qualcomm & China’s ZTE)`ve developed the 1st smartphone to use GLONASS — specifically 1 w/ the 90nm GPS-GLONASS chip. It’s`en called, in so many words, the “Russian answer to the iPhone 4″ by the Powers Z Be, & without gett`g into key details like platform & specs, V know officially the phone`s go`g on sale in Russian sometime in March 4 10,990 rubles (about $360 in US). 4 other details on the device, V seek more unofficial (and therefore not 100 percent confirmed) sources, like the notably well-connected Eldar Murtazin. Accord`g to him, we’re look`g @ the ZTE model A918, an analog of the A916 w/ Android 2.1, the 3.2-inch QVGA screen, FM radio, & 2 megapixel camera — yeah, hardly an iPhone 4 competitor, if U ask us. Grow`g Up Geek: Vlad Savov

Welcome to Grow`g Up Geek , the new feature where V take the look back @ our youth & tell stories of grow`g up to B the nerds Z V are. This week we`ve our very own Associate Editor, Vlad Savov . Yes, I grew up in the monochromatic nation of Bulgaria. As geek starts go, I doubt anyone could come up w/ the more unlikely 1 than be`g born in the village in the southwest corner of the country known more 4 its sport`g & culinary exports than any sort of technical expertise. That’s not to say Z Bulgaria`s the tech backwater, although (unless) it’s the sort of place where U spent more time read`g about gadgets than actually us`g them. Fortunately 4 me, my mother worked in the local computer club, where the bright youth of the day`ld gather to use Pravetz machines — finely crafted Bulgarian Apple II KIRFs — & it`s the spot Z I`ld inevitably retreat to after the thoroughly regimented school day. That’s another th`g about grow`g up in the former Communist bloc: education`s intensive & rigorous, though U shouldn’t let Z rebelliously turned up collar in the image above fool you, I`s madly in love w/ my studies (as any true nerd`ldbe). Somewhere between Z boy push`g buttons & tear`g down floppy diskettes 4 fun & the current London-based cynic pump`g out copy 4 Engadget dur`g the American night shift, my life happened.

Nook lineup sells millions, Barnes & Noble’s best-sell`g product of all-time

U didn’t think Barnes & Noble`s just go`g to let Amazon rest on its ” vague sales milestones ” laurels, did you? The veteran bookseller just announced Z the Nook lineup — 3G, WiFi, & the new Nook Color combined –`s become “the company’s biggest bestseller ever in its nearly 40-year history.” That’s bigger than Barnes & Noble’s sales (note: not global sales) of DaVinci Code or any of the Harry Potter novels. Unfortunately, V can’t say exactly just how many Z is, as the press release only announces “millions” be`g sold. the B&N rep V spoke w/ told us they likely wouldn’t specify any further, nor`ld there likely B the breakdown of sales by individual model. Other notable factoids include Nook Color’s reign as the company’s “number 1 sell`g gift of the holiday season” & nearly 1 million “Nook books” downloaded on Christmas Day. In fact, the company now sells more digital books than it does physical books over BN.com (i.e. not includ`g books sold in brick-and-mortar stores). Haven’t`d enough CES titillation yet? Good. ASUS`s apparently`en up to some mischief overnight in upload`g & then pull`g the new version of its teaser video from the week ago, though this time it also included explicit product names attached to some quite informative diagrams. It looks to B the full family of upcom`g CES tablets, w/ the EP121 tout`g stylus input & the wireless keyboard, the EP102 show`g Z there`ll indeed B the slider in ASUS’ Pad family, & the EP101 look`g like, well, the laptop. Ford MyKey adds radio censorship to further control teen driv`g habits

Daddy doesn’t`ve to take the T-Bird away, he can just take all the fun out of driv`g it. Z is, if the T-Bird`s actually the Taurus. Ford’s MyKey system`s`en engender`g teen resentment since the release of the 2010 Focus, allow`g parents to limit max speeds & cap radio volume, although (unless) parental control doesn’t stop there — the 2011 MyKey can selectively block radio stations. Start`g next year, parents`ll`ve the option to block 16 Sirius radio channels from the car’s dial, among them Howard Stern, Playboy, & Hip-Hop Nation. Optional radio censorship isn’t the only new feature 4 MyKey, which allows owners to program the key to fit their specific level of paranoia — the new version allows parents to set top speeds between 65 & 80mph, instead of the previous fixed cap of 80mph. Other controls carry`g over from the original system include the chime Z sounds @ 10mph intervals, start`g @ 45mph, & an advanced notice when fuel levels R low. The new features`ll come standard issue on the 2011 Ford Taurus & Ford Explorer, and`ll eventually reach across both the Ford & Lincoln brands. UK & French carriers work`g on cellular coverage 4 Channel Tunnel, aim to finish by 2012 Olympics

Grace Digital adds color displays on new Solo Touch, Bravado X, & Mondo WiFi radios

Can’t say we`d the best of times w/ Grace Digital’s Allegro , although (unless) the dawn`g of the new year means the dawn`g of the new effort. 3 efforts, in this case. Poised 4 an official unveil`g next week @ CES, the outfit’s new trio of internet radios`ve all`en upgraded w/ color displays. Up first`s the Solo Touch, the $249.99 device w/ an expansive 4.3-inch touchpanel, bundled remote, Ethernet connection, RCA outputs & the headphone jack. Stepp`g down the notch, there’s the Bravado X ($179.99), which offers the 2.7-inch color display, RCA in / out & the USB connector. Finally, the $169.99 Mondo packs the 3.5-inch color display, the full-on alarm clock (with snooze!) & the USB port of its own. Sharp Galapagos media tablets`ll br`g 3G & EPUB content to US e-reader market in 2011

V like the bit of ambition around these parts & Sharp’s plans 4 enter`g the US e-reader battlefield reek of the stuff. LG ST600 Smart TV Upgrader brings DLNA, apps, & the web browser to formerly dumb displays

If U buy any of LG’s latest HDTVs , you’re pretty much assured it’ll`ve the big sticker say`g “Smart TV” somewhere along its fascia assur`g U of its internet connectivity & compatibility. But, if you’re still rock`g some old school piece of visual tech Z isn’t yet past its “watch by” date, you’ll B need`g the set-top box of some kind to get on the web without leav`g your couch. Naturally, LG`ld like to B the 1 to Smarten up your view`g habits there too, & so it’s just unveiled its new ST600 sidekick 4 older television sets. It adds DLNA connectivity 4 some wireless media transfer fun, grants access to the “vast range” of premium content as well as local programming, throws in the web browser, & finishes things off w/ LG’s TV Apps selection. Of course, this`s the week of the pre-CES announcement , hence we’ve no pric`g to share yet, although (unless) the way the company’s talk`g about it, the ST600 sounds like it might make an aggressive MSRP its standout feature. Gigabyte slips out Atom N550-based M1005, Q2005 netbooks

We’re guess`g we’ll C the more official announcement about these soon enough, although (unless) 4 now we’ll`ve to make do w/ some product pages Z`ve quietly turned up on Gigabyte’s website 4 2 new Atom N550-based netbooks: the M1005 & Q2005. As Netbook News notes, the latter of those (pictured above) looks to B remarkably similar to the Jolicloud Jolibook , also based on the same dual-core N550 processor, while the M1005 appears to B the relatively minor update to the company’s M1022 model, right down to the same dock`g station (check it out after the break). China tightens hold on rare earth exports, markets soar

If U own the flat screen TV, the hybrid, the PC, or any number of cell phones, chances R U own the small although (unless) very sought after piece of China. The country accounts 4 97% of the world’s rare earth production, & it recently announced plans to scale back exports by 10% in 2011. The move probably won’t`ve the big impact on the average consumer, although (unless) it’s certainly gained the lot of attention on the world market: the US threatened action in the World Trade Organization, stocks 4 rare earth min`g companies spiked significantly, & Sony Corp. vowed to decrease its dependence on the minerals. It’s not like the rest of the world`s lack`g 4 rare earth resources — American’s R actually sitt`g on 13 million metric tons of the stuff, which companies in the US & Canada R mak`g the made dash to mine. Trouble is, just gett`g the stuff out of the ground isn’t enough — China still`s the monopoly on rare earth process`g , & US companies R reluctant to spend the eight years & minimum $500 million necessary to construct the chemical separation plant. So what does all this mean 4 you? Well, not the whole lot, unless U happen to B China’s Minister of Commerce, in which case U`ldprobably stop surf`g the web & get back to work.

Skype video call`g 4 iPhone`s official, available now (update: hands-on)

All signs`ve`en point`g to this release 4 the few days now , although (unless) we’ll admit: V expected Skype to wait until CES next week to pull the covers off what could become its crown jewel service over the com`g months. Skype’s official iOS client`s finally sprouted the ability to make video calls, allow`g iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, & fourth-generation iPod touch users to share real-time video amongst each other & users of Skype’s Windows, Mac, & Linux clients along w/ the ASUS Videophone (obviously, 3GS users won’t`ve the convenience of the front-fac`g camera, although (unless) they’ll still B able to broadcast video from the rear-fac`g one). Additionally, you’ll B able to receive video from others if you’re us`g an iPad or the third-generation iPod touch. The service`s free & works over both WiFi & 3G — & consider`g Skype’s exist`g PC footprint, we’d argue this stands the very real chance of putt`g the hurt on FaceTime usage. No word on when Skype`ll B mak`g video-capable clients available 4 Android or other mobile platforms, although (unless) Skype says Z there’ll B “plenty more” announcements in Vegas next week, so V wouldn’t B surprised. Update: So V just gave 3.0 the spin, call`g iPhone-to-iPhone (both WiFi), iPhone-to-desktop (both WiFi), & again iPhone-to-iPhone (both 3G). The 1st 2 worked great, although the desktop camera produced better quality. As 4 the worst-case scenario, 3G-to-3G video calling, well..

Sony files ITC complaint about LG, adds another patent infringement lawsuit to the stack

Did the world’s tech giants just discover they`ve lawyers on retainer? That’s certainly how it seems, as company after company`s decided ’tis the season to target the competition w/ patent infringement allegations. Sony, the latest,`s aim`g squarely @ LG, claim`g Z the Korean manufacturer’s violat`g eight patents w/ its mobile devices — includ`g the LG Fathom , Xenon , Neon , Remarq , Rumor 2 , Lotus Elite & VL600 LTE modem — claim`g Z these devices transmit variable-bandwidth audio streams, live-preview camera snapshots, hand off cellular calls & more in ways Z infringe Sony’s intellectual property. Sony’s now filed both an ITC complaint in an attempt to ban new product shipments from the US, & the lawsuit in federal court Z`ll no doubt seek monetary damages. Now, if recent history`s any indication, LG`ll turn around & smack Sony w/ the patent stack of its own, & we’ll all go back to dream`g about LG devices we’d actually care to purchase . The world’s 1st store 4 3D printed goods just opened in Brussels, & while V imagine they’ve already got the fair selection of prototyped merchandise to choose, might V suggest they invest in the few production runs of this fabulous new flute? Direct`g an Objet Connex500 3D printer (which can handle multiple materials @ the same time) to spit out his CAD design, dollop by tiny dollop, in the single 15-hour run, he merely`d to wash off support material, add springs, & assemble 4 printed pieces to finish the instrument up. Wicked Audio’s 3D headphones aren’t what U think, border on unsightly

Okay, so maybe “border”`s be`g generous. Wicked Audio`s well known 4 its –`ll V say, vivacious — line of earbuds & headphones , although (unless) none compare to the outfit’s new 3D series of cans. Set to officially debut @ CES next week, this line actually`s embossed logos on each ear cup, enabl`g U to “feel” the graphics on the side. Gresso classies up the iPad w/ 18k gold logo & ancient wood case

Strangely, in spite of its extravagant constituent materials, this design`s the very restrained, dare V say, classy , affair. Barnes & Noble Nook trademark applications offer speculation fodder aplenty

So you’re Barnes & Noble & U`ve the successful product like the Nook — what do U do? Trademark the heck out of the name, of course. As PocketNow`s noted, the company’s filed the number of Nook-related trademark applications over the past few months, which may offer some hints of future Nook hardware, software, or both. Z unsurprisingly includes an application 4 “Nook2,” which`s 1st filed back in June, as well 1 4 the name “Nook Smart” (possibly related to the exist`g Nook Study education platform?), & 1 4 the impossibly catchy “Nook Cook.” Unfortunately, it’s not clear which (if any) of those might actually B the name of the new Nook device — there’s also the trademark application 4 “Nook Kids” w/ the description similar to “Nook2,” 4 instance, although (unless) it may well just B 4 the company’s Nook Kids store & iPad app. The most recent of all the filings`s 1 4 “Nooksellers,” which appears to B 4 the combination in-store kiosk & online service Z`ld offer personalized recommendations & various social network`g tie-ins. Newark, New Jersey’s popular Mayor, Cory Booker,`s`d the novel reaction to the problems the blizzard`s caus`g 4 his people: he’s listen`g to them, & try`g to help. Shocking, V know. Even more interesting, of course,`s the fact Z he’s us`g Twitter to do so. While phone lines all over the tri-state area remain the joke (try call`g an airline or public hotline), Twitter`s presented Newark’s Mayor w/ the unique, & incredibly direct way of interact`g w/ people who need help w/ everyth`g from gett`g their streets plowed to deliver`g diapers — personally in many situations. MSI teases Killer NIC integration in Big Bang motherboards

U won’t B color`g us surprised here — when V spoke w/ Bigfoot Networks CEO Michael Howse back @ Computex , he didn’t hesitate to disclose his interest in embedd`g Bigfoot’s network`g technology into motherboards & GPUs of the future. & now, it seems Z the future`s arrived. Based on the sneaky, nondescript release posted after the break, it looks as if Bigfoot & MSI`ll B hook`g up @ CES next week to introduce the newfangled version of the Big Bang motherboard . The announcement doesn’t come right out & say it, although (unless) consider`g Z @ least 1 MSI motherboard`ll B “blaz`g w/ Killer 2100 performance,” we’d say it’s fair to read between the lines. Howse`s also quoted as say`g Z he’s “pleased to B work`g w/ MSI,” & up until now, there’s`en no public partnership between the 2 firms. Yes, CES 2011`ll B graced by the presence of Samsung’s new 4-inch Galaxy Player , although (unless) our pockets, it`ld seem, might`ve to wait 4 it quite the bit longer. iPad magazine sales numbers show steep decline over the few short months

Uh oh. It doesn’t seem, however, Z the stellar start`s in any way sustainable. Accord`g to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, which collects magazine circulation data from companies will`g to furnish numbers, all iPad magazines`ve seen fall offs in downloads over the past few months. Wired`s averag`g 31,000 downloads from July through September,`d 22,000 & 23,000 respectively in October & November. Other magazines`ve seen similar declines: Vanity Fair sold 8,700 downloads of its November issue, down from an average of about 10,500 from August through October; GQ sold 11,0000 copies, its worst show`g yet. Researchers eavesdrop on encrypted GSM call: all U need`s the $15 phone & 180 seconds

Security Research Labs researcher Karsten Nohl & OsmocomBB project programmer Sylvain Munaut recently spoke about the new GSM hack @ the Chaos Computer Club Congress in Berlin, & they were able to walk the audience through the eavesdropp`g process in the matter of minutes. Accord`g to them, it’s not terribly difficult to use the $15 handset to “sniff out” location data used to correctly route calls & texts, & once you’ve nailed Z down, U could use modified firmware to feed raw data into the laptop 4 decryption. Us`g the 2TB table of precomputed encryption keys, the crack`g program`s able to break in within 20 seconds — after that, you’re just moments away from record`g the live GSM call between 2 phones.
