Hokies give (tactile) sight to the blind so they can drive, no word on turn`g water into wine

Daytona International Speedway`s synonymous w/ speed, auto racing, & . . . blind people? Virginia Tech’s Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory (RoMeLa) , along w/ the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), recently debuted its sight-optional & street-legal SUV @ the famed racetrack. Dr. Dennis Hong & his students 1st let blind folks drive the dune buggy without the help of the sighted copilot in 2009 — as the 1st step to achiev`g the goal of the street-legal SUV 4 the sightless crowd . The SUV in question`s designed 4 the NFB’s Blind Driver Challenge, and`s equipped w/ the drive-by-wire system — also seen in the RoMeLa autonomous vehicle — Z`s modified 4 use w/ RoMeLa’s SpeedStrip & DriveGrip tactile interface technology. It works by us`g the laser rangefinder to map the surround`g area, relay`g information 4 acceleration & brak`g to the driver by rumbl`g the SpeedStrip seat, & pass`g along turn`g info through vibrations in the DriveGrip gloves. The system`s not developed solely 4 the purpose of gett`g blind drivers on the road, however, as Virginia Tech suggests Z its technology could also B used in gam`g applications. UM students make cheap & portable solar charger / light source 4 develop`g nations

Solar power`s the most egalitarian of all energy sources, yet residents in many parts of the world still lack access to electricity. 3 University of Michigan engineer`g students`ve created an affordable solution to this problem — to the delight of camp`g geeks everywhere — w/ the Emerald, the portable solar panel Z does double duty as both the cellphone charger & personal light source. We’ve seen the personal solar panel idea before, although (unless) the price of entry made it an untenable solution 4 develop`g nations. Solar-powered light bulbs`ve`en around 4 the while too, although (unless) the Emerald’s light lasts 4 eight hours on the charge (as opposed to the bulbs’ 2 to six hours), & it’s able to fully charge the phone in the same time it takes an outlet to do the job. Nanocade turns your netbook into the lap-friendly arcade cabinet

We’d all like our own personal arcade like Flynn’s, although (unless) sadly personal finances & the lack of square footage can make Z the challenge. Notion Ink delays some Adam shipments to February 14th due to touchscreens damaged in transit

City of Lights becomes City of Openness as ParisData goes live

Though the publication admitted Z the camera lacked the customization of certain Micro 4 Thirds cousins, it didn’t miss most of the advanced controls, preferr`g the streamlined menus & manual dials 4 easy access to common adjustments. (Battery charg`g over USB & the dedicated movie button were also deemed nice touches.) In fact, the only major d`g DPReview`d 4 Olympus`s the complete omission of auto exposure & autofocus locks 4 focus-and-recompose shooting, although (unless) if you’re will`g to snap shots us`g Olympus’s 11 AF points & aren’t look`g to tote the set of expensive interchangeable lenses around, this might B the one. Enspert Identity Tab E201 rings up @ $350 w/ Froyo, Gmail & Android Market

Enspert blindsided us @ CES 2011 w/ the pair of quality Android tablets, & here’s another surprise — next month, the company’s Identity Tab E201`ll apparently ship 100% Google-certified. Importer Dynamism`s tak`g preorders on February 1st 4 the 7-inch Android 2.2 tablet, which comes w/ both Gmail & Android Market on board, though admittedly 4 the somewhat larger outlay than V originally heard. $350`s what you’ll pay 4 the 800 x 480 slate, which sports the 1GHz Hummingbird processor & PowerVR SGX540 graphics, 8GB storage & 512MB RAM, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, the full compliment of sensors & an SD card slot. Just the month ago we’d`ve called this quite the deal, although (unless) come February 1st U may want to wait — after all, Google’s busy bees may show off the fruits of their labors the very next day . Switched On: the suite segment 4 PlayStation games

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On , the column about consumer technology. 1 th`g Z`s set Sony apart from its home console rivals`s`en the extended lifecycles of its hardware. Rid`g the momentum of the massive install base, both the PlayStation & PlayStation 2 each kept sell`g strong nearly the decade after their debut, & years after their respective successors were introduced. In fact, as late as 2009, Audiovox began offer`g the PS2 integrated into an aftermarket ovehead car video system w/ the 10″ screen. Sony could pursue this strategy in home consoles because the PS2`s the runaway unit volume leader of its generation. Not so w/ the PSP. When Sony introduced the PlayStation Portable , it entered the portable console market w/ fierce, entrenched competition from the incumbent Nintendo, & the powerful widescreen handheld`s outsold by the Nintendo DS & its later derivatives. Sony couldn’t attain the market share it needed to steamroll exist`g competition.

Toshiba Dynabook Qosmio T750 laptop`s the lid Z changes color on both sides

It’s`en the long time since V used the laptop Z`d the monochromatic display — it`s the giant white block of the th`g Z`s not missed — although (unless) flip around just about every laptop V use today & U find the backside Z stubbornly refuses to change color no matter the light Z hits it.`s Z the problem? Not really, V think it’s quite fine since we’re not often star`g @ Z bit, although (unless) 4 Toshiba such tedium simply won’t do, so it’s introduc`g the Dynabook Qosmio T750 w/ the color-shift`g lid. Turn it in the light & it shifts & shimmers, just like the chameleon paint tuners`ve`en us`g on custom rides 4 decades. Here, though, we’re told it’s done w/ multiple layers of film, no paint @ all. Oh, the inside? the 2.66GHz Intel Core i5-480M, 4GB of DDR 3 memory, & the 15.6-inch, 1366 x 768 display that’s LED backlit — which`s also capable of display`g multiple colors, in case you’re interested. Well, too bad, because U still can’t buy them. although (unless) Zipcar can, apparently, add`g eight of the things to its fleet, & they’re available now in Boston, San Francisco, & Portland, Oregon. Given the company`s 8,000 total cars available your chances of secur`g 1 of these particular Priuses (Prii?)`s slim, although (unless) if U score, know Z they charge in just 3 hours on the 110 outlet, & half Z if you’re wired 4 220, so no fancy-pants charg`g station`s required 4 use. WeSC Karmatech concept makes your shoes more social w/ RFID

We’ve`en see`g more & more shoes infused w/ different sorts of technology in recent years, although (unless) none quite like this WeSC Karmatech concept developed by some students @ Sweden’s Hyper Island “digital school.” Described as the “social take on Nike+,” the shoes apparently wouldn’t`ve an accelerometer although (unless) they do pack an RFID chip Z allows the wearer to interact w/ their surroundings — automatically check in @ the location & share it on Facebook or Twitter, 4 instance, or get access to exclusive deals or special events. Of course, it`s just the concept, although (unless) the students note Z it`ld B relatively cheap to implement (at least on the shoe end of the equation), as the RFID tags themselves only cost the few cents. Intel’s mSATA SSD 310 reviewed: the pint-size performer through & through

The forecast 4 speedy, razor-thin laptops`s look`g pretty sunny right about now, because it seems Intel’s SSD 310 truly does br`g the power of the full-sized solid state drive on the tiny little board. Storage Review & The SSD Review thoroughly benchmarked the tiny 80GB mSATA module this week, & found it performs even better than advertised — easily tear`g through 200MB / sec reads & 70 MB / sec writes — which put it slightly behind Intel’s legendary X25-M series although (unless) well ahead of the company’s X25-V boot drives . While we’re still not see`g Sandforce speeds from Intel’s tried-and-true controller & 34nm silicon & they might not make Toshiba’s Blade run 4 the hills, V can’t wait to test it out in some new Lenovo ThinkPads when they integrate the SSD 310 later this year. That’s the nice bonus 4 the $79 / year package Z currently adds the few free shipp`g bonuses & it`ld B cheaper on the yearly basis than Netflix’s Watch Instantly ($95.88.) As seen above & in the gallery, it consists of “unlimited, commercial-free, instant stream`g of 5,000 movies & TV shows” w/ selections Z mirror the Watch Instantly catalog closely. PS3 firmware 3.56 hacked in less than the day, Sony’s lawyers look confused

Sony’s taken some strong steps against PS3 crack`g in the past week — not only`s it taken to the courts & won the temporary restrain`g order against Geohot & fail0verflow 4 crack`g the console, although (unless) it also released firmware 3.56 , which locked things down again.
