Verizon breaks 1st day sales record w/ iPhone 4 pre-orders — in only 2 hours

It took Verizon only 2 hours of hav`g the iPhone 4 available 4 pre-order to break its all-time record 4 1st day sales of the single device. That’s in spite of the fact it only opened up pre-orders to its own subscribers & did so @ the dead of night. To B clear, between 3AM & 5AM yesterday morning, more people ordered up the iPhone 4 than Verizon`s`en able to get through its doors on any full product launch day. Predictably, the carrier hasn’t bothered to include the actual number of devices ordered up, although (unless) judg`g from the server issues it`s experienc`g immediately after mak`g the handset available & the subsequent shutt`g down of advance pre-orders, we’ll stick our necks out & guess it`s “a lot.” Continue read`g Verizon breaks 1st day sales record w/ iPhone 4 pre-orders — in only 2 hours Verizon breaks 1st day sales record w/ iPhone 4 pre-orders — in only 2 hours originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 08:45:00 EDT. Next-gen Ford GT supercar to B the hybrid, still weigh 500lbs less than predecessor?

Ford ‘s GT came back to life in the mid 2000s to give the brand the much-needed halo car & to re-kindle the fires of those who watched the GT40 trounce the Ferraris @ Le Mans in the late ’60s. It didn’t live long, although (unless) rumors of its re-resurrection R grow`g stronger. Latest comes courtesy of Auto Express , which indicates this generation GT`ll weigh right around 3,000lbs — the massive 500 lighter than its predecessor despite this new model supposedly pack`g the hybrid system. It’ll offer the supercharged V8 paired w/ an electric motor driv`g the front wheels, not unlike the setup in the Porsche 918 RSR & its street-go`g version, the 918 Spyder . Motorola Xoom com`g to Best Buy on February 24th, HTC Thunderbolt on the 14th

We’re already fatigued of report`g launch dates 4 devices announced @ this year’s CES — it seems like each one`s`d @ least 4 different potential release points — although (unless) when U get 1 of Best Buy’s official Facebook pages blabb`g about when the Moto Xoom & HTC Thunderbolt`ll B arriving… well, U sum up the strength to do it 1 more time. That’s exactly the week later than our earlier info, so perhaps somebody somewhere decided to push things back the bit. Technocel’s $70 PowerPak Duo battery pack doubles up on USB ports, ships April 1st

Technocel’s original PowerPak (and Battery Boost) were both among our arsenal of gadgets used @ this year’s CES , & they proved incredibly useful 4 juic`g up the dead MiFi or smartphone without hav`g to remain tethered to an AC outlet. As U well know, we’re pretty big fans of external battery packs, & it seems as if Technocel`s addressed the 1 major gripe we`d w/ the first-generation PowerPak. The Duo`s essentially the same kind of gizmo, although (unless) w/ the lot more oomph & double the ports. It’s the squared power brick w/ an internal 2500mAh lithium-ion battery (compared to 1600mAh in the earlier build), & rather than hav`g the single USB port, this guy’s got two; moreover, it’s far easier to look at, and`s said to provide up to 7.5 extra hours of talk time to the average phone. Agility Saietta electric sports bike eyes-on

V came, V saw, V took pictures. the London-based startup by the name of Agility today unveiled its 1st & only product, the Saietta electric sports bike , & V just`d to pop out to the MCN Motorcycle Show in its hometown to peep it 4 ourselves. Well, what`s there to say Z the pictures don’t already? V`ldprobably start off w/ Z massive hump U C up front. @ 1st glance it makes the bike look extremely front-heavy, although (unless) it`s in actual fact mostly the shell — made of the lightweight composite material whose ingredients V were not allowed to know — which channels air into the areas Z need cool`g and, more importantly, optimizes the hell out of this two-wheeler’s aerodynamics. There’s an exposed double wishbone suspension system, just some of the eye candy on this extremely reflective racer, & the weight balance is, contrary to our 1st impression, almost perfectly even. This`s due to the battery packs be`g stashed in the center, just in front of the brushed DC motor w/ 90+ percent efficiency (Agility tells us the whole roar`g machine`s an 83 percent throughput efficiency). Kno shipments delayed, no word on why or 4 how long

What`s it w/ tablets & ship date shenanigans ? After gett`g some tips from Kno pre-orderers (who should’ve started receiv`g this monstrosity last year ) Z their shipments`d`en delayed, V pinged Kno & got some ultra-vague confirmation of Z fact: Things @ Kno R go`g well. However, as U noted below, there`s`en the shipment delay. As soon as Kno`s new information, we`ll share Z w/ customers & can certainly give U the heads up if Z`s helpful. There’s no mention of any of this on Kno’s website, & typically w/ this sort of the delay there’s @ least some sort of reason`g — “the boxes V got R the wrong size,” or “our Lego test`g robot broke down,” or someth`g smooth like that. Of course, we’re sure there’s some sort of explanation forthcoming. This`s no cause to believe Kno`s in serious danger of not shipp`g its tablet, or Z it’s try`g to pull the fast one, although (unless) Kno`s unfortunately happened upon the disturb`g trend in the tablet space Z we’d love to B well rid of by now. The crazy kitties over @ Mad Catz`ve signed yet another licens`g agreement to further sink their claws into the world of gam`g peripherals — they’ve just sealed the deal w/ Microsoft to B the exclusive supplier of Xbox 360 wireless headphones, as well as non-exclusive rights 4 wired 360 headphones. All products under the agreement`ll bear the Xbox logo, as well as the signature “T” from Mad Catz’s recently acquired Tritton series, although (unless) don’t go out look`g 4 them anytime soon — these cats won’t mark their territory until Christmas 2011. iPhone 4 to get AT&T mobile hotspot capabilities on February 13th?

So U might`ve noticed the few reviews of Verizon’s iPhone 4 crop up last night, noth`g unusual about that, although (unless) the couple of its reviewers have`d someth`g to say about AT&T’s version of the phone as well. Walt Mossberg & David Pogue (who`s since stricken the date from his review) both pinpoint February 13th as the date when they expect AT&T to turn on the Personal Hotspot capability Z Verizon’s iPhone`ll`ve from launch. That’s expected to happen w/ an update to iOS 4.3 , which recently went out to developers in its 3rd beta iteration , suggest`g the software’s nearly mature enough 4 public consumption & seemingly fitt`g right into this timeline. Mind you, this`s still not concrete information, as Mossberg could conceivably`ve`en talk`g of AT&T’s Mobile Hotspot app which`s launch`g on the same day on devices like the Inspire 4G, & Pogue could`ve deleted the date 4 similar reasons, although (unless) we’re somehow disinclined to believe Z 2 gentlemen in the position to`ve insider(ish) intel`ld both make such the mistake @ the same time. iPhone 4 to get AT&T mobile hotspot capabilities on February 13th? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 05:26:00 EDT. EyeSight brings its gesture controls to Android tablets, Windows-based devices

EyeSight`s`en bring`g its hand-wav`g UI to all sorts of mobile devices 4 some time now, & it’s now expanded things yet again. Follow`g up its launch on Android last summer, the company`s announced Z its gesture recognition software`s now also`en tailored specifically 4 Android tablets & other “computer-based” Android platforms, & it’s announced Z it’s now available 4 Windows-based devices as well. As before, the software`s able to work w/ just about any built-in camera, & the company says Z it`s`en “highly optimized” 4 mobile platforms, w/ low CPU & memory requirements. It’s not someth`g available directly to users, though — it’s up to developers to license it & include the functionality in their applications. Head on past the break 4 an idea of how it works — just try to ignore Z conspicuously out of place iPad @ the beginn`g of the video. What`s Google Who?

U C what we’re see`g in the browser history? Google Who. Google Who? What’s that? It appears @ the 32 minute mark from yesterday’s Android event video . Watch Google’s Android event in full: Honeycomb on the Xoom, Android Market website, in-app purchases, & Cee-Lo Green

There`s plenty about yesterday’s Android event Z didn’t make headlines but`s worth noting. Hardware acceleration of both 2D & 3D UI elements — shown off to great effect by Google’s Hugo Barra, who managed to scroll through 3 lists simultaneously without induc`g any lag on the Motorola Xoom –`ldmake Honeycomb as delicious to look @ as it sounds, while our personal favorite, the new tablet-specific email interface,`ldB part of Gmail yesterday . The email UI`s built out of elements Google calls fragments, which`ll supposedly B easy to transition down to smartphones, so thumbs up all around. The video above also runs U through the big news of the day, namely Z Android Market can now B accessed via the dedicated website & apps downloaded to your device remotely, along w/ the equally important (for devs) addition of in-app purchases . Finally, Cee-Lo Green pops in 4 the video chat session from wherever he`s on the internets, & we’re all treated to an exhibition of lag-afflicted, awkward conversation. What’s not to love? BMW’s Wherever U Want To Go explores the future of mobility

Perhaps U weren’t sold on the concept of urban mobility in your car of tomorrow when Audi started research`g the subject , although (unless) maybe BMW’s new documentary film series`ll persuade you. Chapter 1 of Wherever U Want to Go made its debut today & features interviews w/ visionaries from both in & outside the automotive community — from astronaut Buzz Aldrin to co-founder of ZipCar Robin Chase — speak`g about how cars can and`ll adapt to meet the needs of future metropolitan denizens. This 1st movie`s pretty much an extended trailer, so we’ll B interested to C the full conversations in the com`g installments — & V can only hope these chats w/ forward-thinkers convince BMW to re-evaluate its ridiculous car of tomorrow concepts . Apple to require in-app subscriptions 4 periodicals by March 31st, fine print still the bit fuzzy

V knew The Daily`s to B just the 1st drop what’s destined to B the flood of titles w/ in-app purchases 4 the iTunes store , although (unless) V weren’t quite sure how hard Apple`ld B twist`g the faucet — until now, Z is. Accord`g to The Wall Street Journal , Cupertino`ll reject any newspaper or magazine app Z doesn’t take subscription payments through the iTunes store. It doesn’t`ve to B solely Apple’s store — developers can still sell through websites in addition to the mandated in-app option. (If U recall, this`s the same issue Z Sony Reader 4 iOS just faced.) There R the few big questions linger`g out there:`ll the 70 / 30 revenue shar`g apply? Does the “rejection” apply to apps already in the store like Amazon’s Kindle ? RoboEarth teaches robots to learn from peers, pour European fruit beverages (video)

It’s not quite war-ready, although (unless) the new Skynet-like initiative called RoboEarth could`ve U reach`g 4 your guide to automaton Armageddon sooner than U think. The network, which`s dubbed the “World Wide Web 4 robots,”`s designed by the team of European scientists & engineers to allow robots to learn from the experience of their peers, thus enabl`g them to take on tasks Z they weren’t necessarily programmed to perform. Us`g the database w/ intranet & internet functionality, the system collects & stores information about object recognition, navigation, & tasks & transmits the data to robots linked to the network. Basically, it teaches machines to learn without human intervention. If the introduction of this robo-web hasn’t got U think`g of end times, maybe this`ll do the trick: it’s already taught 1 robot, the TechUnited AMIGO, to deliver the box of creamy fruit juice to the bedridden scientist. Verizon iPhone review

The Verizon iPhone 4`s an interest`g product 4 Engadget to review. Firstly, it’s not exactly the new device (not in any outwardly noticeable way). From design, down to its CPU, RAM, & even cost, this iPhone`s the same as the AT&T model… save 4 Z 1 small although (unless) really important thing: it’s got the CDMA radio inside. The device`s also somewhat tricky to review based on its software, since we’ve all`en us`g (and even took the deep look at) iOS 4.2 4 quite some time. So 4 us the task`s to make clear the differences between these 2 devices & their networks. Now that’s the little easier, because we’re sure U`ve the same questions as us. What R calls like

The Engadget Show: Xperia Play / PlayStation phone previewed, ‘shoulder flippers’ in tow (video)

V expect each & every 1 of U to watch the Engadget Show’s initial live stream & to download / re-watch it when V post up the official HD files — & Z expectation goes double 4 episodes featur`g Steve Wozniak . So when V tell U about this awesome breakout clip of Nilay & Josh play`g w/ Sony’s top secret Xperia Play / PlayStation phone prototype — the 1 Richard Lai previewed last week — it’s not because V suspect it’s the 1st time you’ve seen the footage. No, V just want to provide yet another excuse to watch Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha w/ slow framerate, & get the visual cue of the custom-made Josh Topolsky soundboard app. V imagine the games to B much Suite-r by the time the device makes its (much more likely than not) Mobile World Congress debut this month. Android 3.0 ‘Honeycomb’ can encrypt all your data, needs the full hour’s charge

Div`g through the Motorola Xoom’s sweet, sweet blend of Android 3.0 , V found an interest`g perk — there’s an “Encrypt Tablet” option buried in the settings page, intended to secure all your personal data w/ the password or PIN. While the handy Google rep couldn’t tell us which cryptographic standards the OS uses, he did tell us the feature`s part of Honeycomb as the whole, not the Motorola exclusive, so we’re sure to C the option in other business-minded Android slates to come. Oh, & Google asks Z all U sysadmins stay tuned, as the company’s whipped up an API Z lets U enforce policy restrictions upon your peons as far as encryption`s concerned. Exclusive: Why the camera isn’t the culprit 4 the white iPhone 4′s delay

Unless you’ve`en away from the Internet over the last few days, U would’ve no doubt heard about Woz’s special appearance @ the Engadget Show on Sunday. Unsurprisingly, the few websites ran w/ some quotes Z they pulled from our rare interview — specifically, the highlight`s Woz “confirming” Z the white iPhone 4`s indeed delayed due to camera issues. Well, I don’t think this`s the case @ all. In fact, I’m sure there R plenty of other good reasons 4 why Apple’s`en delay`g the much anticipated flavor of its flagship smartphone, although (unless) the camera just isn’t 1 of them. Yahoo: nonstandard IMAP implementation to blame 4 Windows Phone 7 data leak

Finally, what the world’s`en wait`g for: an explanation from Yahoo regard`g its role in Windows Phone 7 Data Leakage-gate . (And V suppose Z U`ve the better suggestion?) Here it is, in full: Yahoo! Mail`s widely available on tens of millions of mobile phones, includ`g those runn`g on Apple iOS, Android, Nokia Symbian, & RIM. The issue on the Windows Phones`s specific to how Microsoft chose to implement IMAP 4 Yahoo! Mail & does not impact Yahoo! Mail on these other mobile devices. Yahoo!`s offered to provide Microsoft the near-term solution 4 the implementation they chose, and`s encourag`g Microsoft to change to the standard way of integrat`g w/ Yahoo! LG teases Optimus 3D, only without the 3D (video)

We’re not sure what’s go`g on w/ the new teaser video released by LG. It looks like the handset Z Phandroid pegged as the Optimus 3D the few days ago and`s since become the poster-boy 4 the device Z`ll officially include the glasses-free 3D LCD & “dual-lens camera 4 3D recording.” While V can C the front-fac`g cam, try as V might V just can’t C Z pair of lenses on the back of the handset teased in the video. In fact, V don’t C any camera @ all lead`g us to believe Z LG might B manipulat`g the image 4 the big reveal in the few weeks. The video does drop some spec hints w/ phrases like “someth`g bigger” & “dual core — multi channel” which`ld seem to indicate the 4.x-inch display (presumably the 4.3-inch 3D display V spotted @ CES), dual-core SoC (like LG’s Optimus 2x ), & multi-channel RAM as originally rumored by Phandroid . BMW’s NFC Key`s your ticket to ride, & U`ldcare (video)

Near Field Communication ( NFC )`s shap`g up to B 1 of the hottest tech trends 4 2011 now Z payment systems & new handsets (driven by the Gingerbread build of Android & presumably, the near-term iOS release ) R mak`g their way into the US & Europe. Add BMW to the grow`g list of supporters w/ its NFC key of the future. Bimmer researchers envision link`g the key to the car’s navigation & entertainment system allow`g U to make hotel reservations or purchase train tickets, 4 example. U could then download the ticket directly from your car to the key which could then B used to board the train. Later, the key linked to your bank`g information could even B used to settle the hotel bill. BMW believes its approach`s more secure than Z of an NFC-enabled cellphone because its system`s both closed & encrypted. Possibly. although (unless) we’re still more likely to`ve our cellphone in the pocket while travel`g than the key to the car parked the few hundred miles away. Of course, there’s noth`g prevent`g us from tapp`g the key to our cellphone & transferr`g the data — it`s still in the R&D phase 4 the next generation of ConnectedDrive after all.
