DARwIn-OP humanoid revealed, ready to open source your robotics program
The next version of the RoboCup-famous DARwIn bot`s about ready to give the Nao the run 4 its money. The new DARwIn-OP from Robotis & Virginia Tech’s RoMeLa (led by Dr. Dennis Hong, who joined us on the Engadget Show earlier this year)`s just about to land, & the 1st pictures of the finished th`g`ve started to circulate. While the bot`s designed to perform, w/ sensors & servos suitable 4 higher-end robotics, the main thrust of the design`s the open source & modular nature of the hardware & software. The bot can B purchased as the product from Robotis, although (unless) the CAD files R publicly available, & its plastic parts can B fabricated by the end user to save money (you do`ve the 3D printer, right?). Rumor`s it the robot`ll retail 4 around $8,000, around half the cost of its closed source Nao competition. The full unveil of the robot`s due @ the IEEE-RAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots the couple weeks from now.
