Hundred Year Starship Initiative plans to put people on Mars by 2030, br`g them back by… well, never (video)

4 the while now, there`s`en the conversation go`g on in certain circles (you know, space circles): namely, if the most prohibitive part of the manned flight to Mars`ld B the return trip, why bother return`g @ all? & besides the whole “dy`g alone on the hostile planet 55-million-plus kilometers from your family, friends, & loved ones” thing, V think it’s the pretty solid consideration. This`s just 1 of the topics of discussion @ the recent Long Now Foundation event in San Francisco, where NASA Ames Research Center Director Pete Worden discussed the Hundred Year Starship Initiative, the project NASA Ames & DARPA R undertak`g to fund the mission to the red planet by 2030. Indeed if the space program “is now really aimed @ settl`g other worlds,” as Worden said, what better way to encourage the permanent settlement than the promise Z there`ll B no com`g back — unless, of course, they figure out how to return on their own. Of course, it’s not like they’re be`g left to die: the astronauts can expect supplies from home while they figure out how to get things up & running. As Arizona State University’s Dr. Paul Davies, author of the recent paper in Journal of Cosmology , writes, “It`ld really B little different from the 1st white settlers of the North American continent, who left Europe w/ little expectation of return.” Except w/ much less gravity. C Worden spout off in the video after the break.
