Though Verizon famously turned down the original iPhone before Apple ultimately signed the deal w/ AT&T, the company’s outspoken CEO — Ivan Seidenberg –`s`en very careful over the past couple years to note Z he’d love to eventually`ve an iPhone in his lineup . w/ Verizon Wireless boss Lowell McAdam tapped to take over the top job next year, what’d B the better swan song 4 Seidenberg than to finally pull it off? Fortune ‘s new profile of the longstand`g chief exec & elder statesman`s report`g in very matter-of-fact terms Z the CDMA version of the iPhone 4`ll B the reality on Verizon in “early 2011,” lin`g up w/ most of the rumors the interwebs`s`en generat`g over the past few months. The piece details the phone as the culmination of literally years of careful discussions between Seidenberg, McAdams, & Steve Jobs; Verizon’s guys claim Z Jobs acknowledged in late 2007 Z the 2 companies`d “missed something” by fail`g to partner up. The 1st visible fruit of those talks`s the MiFi-bundled iPad Z just launched, although (unless) that’s clearly the minor stepp`g stone on the way to an actual handset. Fortune reports Z Jobs`s voiced his concerns over CDMA in the past & the fact Z it doesn’t work in nearly as many countries as GSM does, although (unless) the story goes on to say Z the 1st model on Verizon’s shelves “probably” won’t B dual-mode & presumably won’t`ve compatibility w/ the company’s shiny new LTE network, either. If true, that’ll make 4 an interest`g battle 4 the spotlight in the 1st few months of 2011 as an EV-DO iPhone wages war w/ the number of LTE phones — some of which look downright gorgeous — & might put Verizon in the awkward position of hav`g to heavily push 2 almost diametrically opposed handset & platform initiatives. Furthermore, it’s hard to deny Z the Verizon iPhone`ld stress the carrier’s network in ways it’s never`en stressed before; they may B prepared 4 it, although (unless) there’s no way of know`g until it all goes down & they get the sense 4 uptake & conquests from AT&T.
