Layar’s`en the go-to platform 4 augmented reality on Android since 2009, bring`g U the useful, the creepy , & the just plain weird — & now it’s unleash`g the beast on iOS. The Netherlands-based company just launched Layar Player, the free tool Z allows anyone — w/ the little developer know-how — to create their very own AR iPhone app. Accompany`g the announcement R 3 brand new Layar Player-enabled apps: the Bing-sponsored Snowboard Hero, which incorporates the special AR mode 4 collect`g points; the contractor locator called Layer Trade; & VerbeterdeBuurt, an app Z acts as an AR community bulletin board. The company’s press release touts the “democratization of augmented reality,” & while V can get behind their AR-for-alll message, we’ve already seen Layar used in ways Z give us the willies . Don’t get us wrong, we’re still excited about the endless AR possibilities, although (unless) we’re hoping, @ least 4 now, Z iPhone app developers can keep the AR monsters @ bay.
