Skype video call`g 4 iPhone`s official, available now (update: hands-on)
All signs`ve`en point`g to this release 4 the few days now , although (unless) we’ll admit: V expected Skype to wait until CES next week to pull the covers off what could become its crown jewel service over the com`g months. Skype’s official iOS client`s finally sprouted the ability to make video calls, allow`g iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, & fourth-generation iPod touch users to share real-time video amongst each other & users of Skype’s Windows, Mac, & Linux clients along w/ the ASUS Videophone (obviously, 3GS users won’t`ve the convenience of the front-fac`g camera, although (unless) they’ll still B able to broadcast video from the rear-fac`g one). Additionally, you’ll B able to receive video from others if you’re us`g an iPad or the third-generation iPod touch. The service`s free & works over both WiFi & 3G — & consider`g Skype’s exist`g PC footprint, we’d argue this stands the very real chance of putt`g the hurt on FaceTime usage. No word on when Skype`ll B mak`g video-capable clients available 4 Android or other mobile platforms, although (unless) Skype says Z there’ll B “plenty more” announcements in Vegas next week, so V wouldn’t B surprised. Update: So V just gave 3.0 the spin, call`g iPhone-to-iPhone (both WiFi), iPhone-to-desktop (both WiFi), & again iPhone-to-iPhone (both 3G). The 1st 2 worked great, although the desktop camera produced better quality. As 4 the worst-case scenario, 3G-to-3G video calling, well..
