Droid Bionic appears on Amazon w/ $150 price tag, quickly disappears again

Something’s seriously go`g on over @ Amazon’s Wireless store where the Droid Bionic , the Verizon sibl`g to AT&T’s Atrix 4G,`s today`en spotted listed 4 sale w/ the $149.99 price. Z matches the levy Amazon asked 4 the Atrix last week (before promptly yank`g the page) & seems to confirm Z the $150 price point`s receiv`g some sincere consideration 4 these 4G-equipped handsets. The Bionic’s page`s now also disappeared into the ether, although (unless) the memory of its delectable promise remains. PSA: Change your old Amazon.com password 4 better security

Amazon’s allegedly got an security flaw where hackers can find your password much easier than they`ld otherwise, & there’s already the fix in place. although (unless) get this — you’ll probably need to change your password 4 the fix to take effect, if U haven’t already done so in the last couple of years. Accord`g to Reddit users, the Amazon.com login system`ll actually accept any phrase so long as it begins w/ your password, such as “password123″ when the magic word`s simply “password” by itself. Z apparently makes it Z much easier 4 the computer to guess your password via brute force methods, no matter how counter-intuitive Z seems, so if U simply change it immediately — & to someth`g other than “password,” please — you’ll`ve much sounder dreams. Amazon roll`g out Netflix-like video stream`g 4 Prime subscribers?

Rumors of Amazon either purchas`g Netflix or launch`g the compet`g option`ve`en circl`g & now 1 of our readers says he’s see`g an unlimited video stream`g section to complement the current Amazon VOD options. That’s the nice bonus 4 the $79 / year package Z currently adds the few free shipp`g bonuses & it`ld B cheaper on the yearly basis than Netflix’s Watch Instantly ($95.88.) As seen above & in the gallery, it consists of “unlimited, commercial-free, instant stream`g of 5,000 movies & TV shows” w/ selections Z mirror the Watch Instantly catalog closely. Resolution`s apparently limited to the “pretty solid” 480p SD, although (unless) there’s no word on audio or subtitle options. We’ll wait to hear if anyone else`s see`g the similar page before assum`g the wide rollout, although (unless) it certainly appears Z there could finally B the viable competitor to the Netflix juggernaut . Sierra On-Line games hit iPad via web app, those old enough to remember them rejoice

U may or may not B old enough to remember Sierra On-Line, makers of such fine games as Leisure Suit Larry , the King’s Quest , & Police Quest , although (unless) none of Z matters anymore. Thanks to the folks over @ Sarien, U now`ve access to these glorious titles via your iPad ‘s web browser. The entire catalog`s`en ported over, & the games which were previously available via the web only R now there on your Apple tablet! The whole shebang`s now hosted on Amazon ‘s content distribution network, & the games`ve`en extensively tweaked 4 Z multitouch interface. Chumby releases Android app, not quite as plush as the original

Chumby isn’t just tak`g its platform to dedicated devices from other manufacturers, it’s also mov`g to software — the strategy Z right out of Amazon’s playbook now Z Kindle`s available on just about every computer & handheld under the sun. The company’s new Android app simply connects to your Chumby account & lets U view & use the same Flash-based apps Z you`ld on any other Chumby device, the testament to the fact Z pretty much every Android handset hitt`g the market these days comes Flash-capable out of the box. Chumby says Z the app works best 4 tablets & docked devices — which makes sense when U think of how you’d use the Sony Dash or Chumby 1 — & conveniently, U can set it to automatically show up as the screen saver whenever your phone`s docked. Verizon’s Droid lineup available @ Amazon 4 the penny per handset w/ no activation fee

Yeah, retailers R always undercutt`g carrier pricing, sometimes pretty dramatically, although (unless) Amazon’s tak`g things to the limit this weekend. U can score any of Verizon’s major Droid phones 4 the penny, & Verizon`s also front`g the $35 Verizon line activation fee. Of course, you’ll`ve to sign up 4 the 2 year contract, & you’d better not think about cancel`g out of it: Amazon`s the $250 per device cancellation fee on top of Verizon’s own hefty charge. VUDU, Wal-mart & Disney join forces, add the free stream`g copy to Toy Story 3 Blu-ray discs

Wal-mart`s show`g how it might make use of VUDU after purchas`g the 1080p movie stream`g house earlier this year, now Z the two`ve teamed up w/ Disney to throw in the free digital copy of Toy Story 3 w/ each 1 purchased @ the store on DVD or Blu-ray. When the movie goes on sale today, customers`ll receive the download code they can use on their nearest VUDU player ( now includ`g Boxee on the Box, PC or Mac) to stream some Buzz & Woody @ any time without the disc involved. Wal-mart & VUDU R quick to describe this mix of of physical & digital access as the future of content, & we’re think`g this type of promotion`s about to become much more widespread since Amazon’s already offered the similar deal w/ Disc+ , & Best Buy purchased CinemaNow specifically 4 this type of offer . The only question now`s if customers`ll start ask`g “which stream`g service does this connect to?” before they run out to buy the new Blu-ray instead of simply look`g 4 the lowest price or other promotional tie-in. Kindle books outsell`g print 2 to 1 4 Amazon’s top 10 bestsellers, & other relatively positive sales figures

Amazon`s its own applied theory of special relativity, in the sense Z V never really know definitive sales figures & instead`ve to rely on the occasional ratio & comparative figure (based upon aforementioned unknown variables) to glean any sense of success. Jeff Bezos & company R happy to announce the latest Kindle has, in its 3 months or so since release, surpassed sales of the previous device in its 2009 holiday season (the shopping-heavy October through December period) — in other words, it expects even greater sales 4 this year’s equivalent quarter, although (unless) it can’t exactly time travel to report on the future (yet). Ready 4 more? Amazon’s also boast`g that, 4 its top 10 bestsell`g books, Kindle digital books R outsell`g print (both hardcover & paperback combined) @ the rate “great than 2 to 1.” We’re go`g to guess those R better figures than its tipp`g point back in July, although (unless) Mass-Sales Equivalence`s never our strong suit in college. More fun factoids & artistic displays of applied statistics can B found in the press release after the break. PlayOn finally gets its iPhone app approved, HTML5 lets out the sigh of resignation

We’re lov`g this new, slightly more liberal wave of App Store approvals (aren’t V easily pleased?), & it looks like PlayOn drew the lucky number today. After wait`g in vain 4 an app approval, PlayOn actually developed the fairly sufficient HTML5 solution to its streaming-web-video-to-your-device problem, although (unless) there’s noth`g quite like the sheen & polish of the bonafide app. Unfortunately, PlayOn’s desktop software, which`s required to make this Netflix / Amazon / Hulu / ESPN / CBS / etc.-beam`g possible,`s still PC only. Amazon launch`g its own Android app store?

This sounds like madness to us, although (unless) take it 4 what U will: TechCrunch`s report`g via some tipsters Z Amazon`s prepar`g to launch its own Android app store, of all things. Revenue split`s rumored to B “the greater of 70 percent of the purchase price or 20 percent of the List Price as of the purchase date,” which`s pretty strange word`g — this “List Price” concept`s apparently designed to prevent U from undercutt`g pric`g w/ other services — & there’ll B the $99 fee to gain entry, which`s pretty standard. Apps`ll B required to use Amazon DRM & could B featured on Amazon’s site, which`s potentially the pretty big upside consider`g the kind of traffic Z bad boy gets. As TechCrunch notes, the particularly interest`g blurb in the alleged terms states Z “Amazon`s sole discretion to determine all features & operations of programs & to set the retail price & other terms on which they sell Apps,” imply`g Z pric`g`s their call — not yours — & they’ve got some say in how your app’s go`g to work & what it’s go`g to do. Clearly we’re miss`g someth`g here, since they’re start`g w/ zero market share, the Android Market`s the obvious choice 4 consumers, & there R some really odd terms — & Bezos isn’t the dummy — so we’ll hold out & C where this goes. After all, w/ Google apparently actively reign`g in devices by lord`g Market access over manufacturers’ heads, there might actually B some room 4 3rd parties to get some traction here over the long term. Roku launches revamped HD, XD, & XDS players, start`g @ $59

We’ve`en wonder`g what Roku`d up its sleeve after the FCC leaked the Roku XD & XDS follow`g Apple’s $99 Apple TV announcement, & it looks like those earlier price cuts were just the beginning: the new Roku lineup starts @ just $59 4 the basic WiFi HD streamer w/ HDMI & composite outputs. That’s basically impulse-purchase territory if you’re look`g 4 the quick way to get Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand or 1 of Roku’s 75 other channels on your TV. The $79 Roku XD adds in 1080p stream`g support 4 channels w/ 1080p content, & the top-of-the-line $99 XDS adds in the USB port 4 future local playback support, component video & optical audio out, & dual-band 802.11n WiFi. HTC Desire Z priced @ €549 by Amazon.de, £430 by Play.com

the day after becom`g official , the Desire Z`s received its 1st price: €549 if bought from Amazon.de. Alas, U still don’t`ve the option to actually purchase or pre-order the unlocked Froyo slider, although (unless) @ least we’ve got the relative idea of where its pric`g fits within HTC’s handset hierarchy. The answer`s pretty highly, consider`g the original Desire, the flagship product in its time, debuted on the same web outlet @ €519 . & here V hoped the G2′s decent US pric`g`ld translate to similar affordability 4 its sister device . Galaxy Tab ? Who needs Z overpriced prima donna? Here’s the tablet the economical among us`ve`en wait`g for.
