Sleek by 50 Cent Platinum headphones announced, invites Beats to the showdown

It’s official. The cans V saw teased earlier in the week`ve just`en made official by Sleek Audio & Curtis Jackson (otherwise known to the world as 50 Cent), w/ the rapper himself dish`g out cash & input to make it happen. We’re told Z they were designed by 50 & engineered by Sleek, & R the 1st headphones ever to offer ‘Wireless Hybrid’ technology w/ military-grade metals. More specifically, the Sleek by 50 Cent Platinum headphones utilize Kleer lossless wireless technology, w/ the 60 foot range & the micro-USB rechargeable battery. If U run out of juice, there’s the detachable mic cable Z can B jacked in 4 continued listening. The cans themselves house the pair of 50mm dynamic drivers, the customized internal amplifier & the call-out to Dr. Dre. Just kidding. Maybe. We’re still wait`g on the price & release date, although (unless) we’d expect ‘em to ship soon 4 just the touch more than HP’s Beats — U know, given the wireless & all

Here’s Sprint’s EVO Shift 4G in all its in-the-wild glory — & yes, it turns out it’s definitely called the EVO Shift 4G, not the EVO 4G Shift , since we’ve got the name spelled out on the official branded box here. As the refresher, this phone’s shap`g up to B the EVO 4G’s keyboard-equipped cousin, albeit w/ the lower-res camera (5 megapixels), the smaller display, & — seemingly — no front camera. 4 some, Z could B an acceptable tradeoff… & it’s conceivable Z we’ll C it on sale within the few days consider`g the flurry of retail leaks we’ve witnessed. PSA: iPhone alarms not work`g come New Year’s Day 2011

We’re not exactly sure of the cause of this fancy new issue affect`g Apple’s super cool iPhone line of cellphones, although (unless) apparently you’ve got trouble come 1/1/2011. Accord`g to an explosive stream of frustration-filled tweets on the Twitter microblogg`g service, when the clock strikes midnight, 1 off alarms`ll cease to s`g out. The issue sounds eerily similar to recent Daylight Savings Time trouble V witnessed back in November, although V saw both repeat`g alarm & single alarm failures. So how can U fix this potentially life-ruin`g problem? Well until Apple patches its OS — & it’s currently unclear if this`s just iOS 4.2.1 or earlier versions as well — U can simply create the recurr`g alarm @ the time U need to B woken up, & then disable it once your dreams R completely ruined. We’re tak`g the deeper look into the issue &`ve contacted Apple — if V get more news, U guys`ll B the 1st to know. In the meantime, feel free to commiserate in comments, and… happy new year? Skype finally bring`g video call`g to mobile

So let us set this up 4 you: Skype`s`en tell`g everyone Z it’ll B mak`g the “series of video-related announcements” @ CES next month… & it’s participat`g in the panel called “Video Call`g Gets Ready 4 Primetime,” so yeah, needless to say, we’d`ve to guess Z Skype’s finally gett`g ready to enter the mobile video call`g game in the big way. Anyhow, the final piece in the puzzle filtered into our inbox this morning: the help document on Skype’s site detail`g mak`g video calls us`g Skype 4 iPhone. V don’t know whether there’s the correspond`g document out there 4 Android, Symbian, or other operat`g systems, although (unless) we’re certainly hop`g so — because if these guys come to the table @ once w/ versions 4 all the major phone platforms, we’ve got the feel`g they’ll B dominat`g the mobile-to-mobile & mobile-to-PC video call`g market in no time. Oh, & here’s the little trivia fact 4 you: the Nokia N900`s actually the 1st device to get official video call`g support from Skype, so this isn’t the 1st 4 these guys — although (unless) it’ll certainly B the 1st time they’ve taken it to the mass market. Android Honeycomb com`g ‘next year,’ adds tablet support

Sure, Google might`ve just dropped Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the Nexus S just today, although (unless) that’s old news — Andy Rubin just took the stage @ D: Dive Into Mobile & announced Z Honeycomb`s due “next year” w/ support 4 tablets. Andy demoed the new version of the OS on the Motorola prototype tablet , & it`s very different, & highly customized — although there were still grids of icons, the apps were more “desktop” in flavor, & the traditional Android buttons weren’t present. Chrome event confirmed by Google 4 December 7th

Well, it looks like our sources were right : Google just announced an event in San Francisco 4 December 7th, which promises “excit`g news about Chrome.” Naturally, we’re expect`g Z to B the announcement of the Google-branded netbook Z runs the Chrome OS, in addition to the launch of the Chrome Web / App Store . Interestingly, it’s pretty short notice 4 this sort of announcement, & it’s also conflict`g w/ the D: Dive into Mobile conference which`s happen`g the few miles north on the same day. V don’t know if that’s poor plann`g on Google’s part, the sign of last minute adjustments in the product, both, or neither, although (unless) either way it’s go`g to B the pretty excit`g week! Acer reveals 4.8-inch Android smartphone w/ 1024×480 screen resolution

Acer may B call`g this “100 percent smartphone. 100 percent tablet.,” although (unless) someth`g just doesn’t add up there. Z be`g said, we`ve to agree Z the 1024×480 screen resolution on the 4.8-inch smartphone`s downright drool-worthy. Clock`g in @ just the smidgen smaller than Dell’s Streak , this here phone (no finalized name`s`en bestowed quite yet)`s just revealed @ Acer’s Global press event in New York City . It`s only shown briefly, demonstrat`g an unknown version of Android & the “evolution of Acer UI.” Specs wise, there’s the 2 megapixel front-fac`g camera, eight megapixel rear camera (with LED flash), 720p video recording, the six-axis Gyroscope + accelerometer package & LED edge lighting. Per usual, Acer’s keep`g the lid on any pric`g estimates, although (unless) it’ll B shipp`g out to gap-jawed customers everywhere in April 2011. Update : We’ve got the full PR after the break, which informs us of the atypical 21:9 aspect ratio in use here as well as its “full metal body.” Curiously enough, it’s also rock`g the curved back (is Z the trend V spot?), Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11n WiFi, HSDPA support, the 1GHz Snapdragon processor & an HDMI output. Motorola slaps Microsoft w/ the pair of patent infringement lawsuits, says it’s such the shame

Looks like Motorola’s about to fight the legal battle on 2 fronts — Apple on 1 hand , & Microsoft on the other. Microsoft fired the 1st shot last month w/ the nine-patent ITC complaint & the 2nd salvo alleg`g Z Motorola`s charg`g unfair licens`g fees 4 802.11 WiFi & H.264 video last week, it’s now Moto’s turn to retaliate w/ the pair of legal complaints. The cellular company now claims Z Redmond’s infring`g the total of sixteen patents w/ everyth`g from Microsoft Exchange to B`g Maps to the Windows operat`g system itself — as well as the aforementioned video codecs & wireless tech, of course. Moto’s also determined to rub the little salt in the wound, it seems, as the company just pushed out the press release w/ the follow`g statement: “It`s unfortunate Z Microsoft`s chosen the litigation path rather than enter`g into comprehensive licens`g negotiations, as Motorola`s mutually beneficial licens`g relationships w/ the great majority of technology companies industry-wide.” PR after the break. Apple sues Motorola right back over six patents

What, U didn’t think Apple`s just go`g to sit around & take it after Motorola 1st sued 4 patent infringement & then asked to court to declare some 20 of Cupertino’s patents weren’t applicable to its products, did you? Apple’s fired back w/ 2 lawsuits claim`g Z Motorola’s Android phones, includ`g although (unless) not limited to the Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, Cliq, Cliq XT, BackFlip, Devour A555, Devour i1, & Charm, infringe the total of six multitouch & OS patents. Z`ld B pretty much par 4 the course — U sue me, I sue U — although (unless) there R the couple interest`g strategic wrinkles to note: We’ve only seen Apple litigate 1 of these patents before: #7,479,949, Touch Screen Device, Method, & Graphical User Interface 4 Determin`g Commands by Apply`g Heuristics. U`ldremember it well — it’s the patent cover`g scroll behavior on multitouch screens Z`s hyped as “the iPhone patent” & triggered the press frenzy over the possible Apple / Palm lawsuit . As V predicted @ the time, Z hasn’t yet materialized, although (unless) old ’949′s gotten pretty popular: Apple’s assert`g it against Nokia & HTC as well. Apple might B su`g over six patents in these 2 cases, although (unless) ultimately Apple`ll claim`g Motorola’s devices infringe the total of 26 patents — part of Apple’s defense to Motorola’s 20-patent lawsuit`ll B to claim Z that Moto’s in fact infring`g each of those patents. That’s the lot of patents across the lot of devices, & it’ll just take 1 find`g of infringement to cause the lot of pain. Apple’s filed its 2 cases in the Western District of Wisconsin, the patent “rocket docket” Z tries cases quickly & R often perceived as be`g plaintiff-friendly. (Part of the Apple / Nokia lawsuit`s happen`g in this same court.) Moto’s obvious next move`ll B to try & consolidate all these cases into the single proceed`g @ 1 court, the procedural tactic Z`ll take likely take months. & that’s just the 1st step.

HP Slate 500 finally (finally!) official, rings up @ $799

Nope, you’re not dreaming, although (unless) feel free to pinch yourself, rub your eyes or take the cold shower! You’ve read right — the HP Slate`s finally official, & after all the teas`g , back & forth , & ( very recent ) leaks , the Atom-powered, Windows 7 Slate`ll finally C the light of day — though in the different way than originally intended. While the 1st videos released by HP may`ve made it seem like it`ld B 4 consumers, HP’s tactfully changed its tune (don’t forget it’s got Palm / WebOS tablets on the way) and`s now aim`g the Slate @ the enterprise & Business market. Still, it`ll B available on HP’s site 4 $799 to anyone who wishes to purchase one. So, what does $800 of your hard earned cash buy you? Well, in addition to the dock & case, which R included in the box, the tablet packs pretty much everyth`g we’d heard over the last year — it’s powered by the 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z540 processor, 2GB of RAM, 64GB SSD & packs Broadcom’s Crystal HD accelerator 4 handl`g 1080p video. (The included dock`s an HDMI-out port if U want to hook it up to the big screen.) Obviously, the 8.9-inch capacitive touch Slate runs Windows 7 Professional, although (unless) it’s got the Wacom active digitizer 4 tak`g notes, which certainly sets it apart from the other Win 7 tablets we’ve seen over the last couple of weeks. Oh, & don’t forget its front fac`g VGA cam & 3 megapixel camera on its back. V got the chance to finally grope the tablet earlier this week, so hit the break 4 our early impressions & the short video

France’s SFR jumps gun, announces Palm Pre 2: 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, webOS 2.0

It’s unclear if the tiny, little shot posted on French carrier SFR’s Club SFR pour Palm blog`s in fact the rumored upcom`g Pre 2 or just an old Pre shot, although (unless) let’s put it this way: consider`g Z V can’t readily tell the difference, it better B an old one. @ any rate, the sparse details in the blog post line up w/ everyth`g we’re expect`g so far, namely Z the new model`ll use the 1GHz processor — presumably the TI OMAP3630 — and`ll sport the full half gig of RAM on board. Between those 2 spec bumps, we’d fully expect the refreshed webOS 2.0 to scream… although (unless) V won’t really know 4 sure until Palm gives us someth`g to work with. It’s`en just shy of the year since TerreStar’s Windows Mobile-based Genus`s announced 4 AT&T , offer`g the unique combination of GSM / HSPA backed up w/ satellite capability 4 those times when U find yourself in the middle of nowhere; in fact, U may`ve assumed Z it`d already`en released by now. After all, this isn’t the phone 4 97 percent of the population — it runs Windows Mobile & still works in places where us soft city folk`ld never dream of go`g — so odds R good U never bothered to follow up on it. Fact is, though, it’s just now available 4 the 1st time today, so as long as you’ve got the line of sight to TerreStar’s bird & the willingness to tolerate WinMo 6.5.3, you’ll B able to make & receive calls throughout the US , Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands & in the surround`g waters — & it’s all on 1 telephone number. Nokia N8 delayed ‘for the few weeks to do some final amends’

Back`g up rumors Z`ve`en go`g around the past couple days, locales Z`d expected to get the N8 in September`ve now`en pushed back to October while Nokia makes “some final amends.” On the upside, some rumors`d the delay pegged 4 November, so this doesn’t seem to B as bad as it could’ve been. 4 what it’s worth, Nokia mentioned dur`g Nokia World last week (and again today) Z the N8`s see`g strong pre-order demand — the strongest ever 4 the Nokia device, allegedly — so this`s likely to bum out the lot of folks, & 4 the few, it might even B just the impetus they needed to hold out 4 the upcom`g E7 . T-Mobile USA just dropped the knowledge on Twitter Z it’ll B carry`g the Motorola Charm start`g next Wednesday, August 25 — although (unless) what it failed to mention`s pricing. 4 what it’s worth, the company does specifically say Z it’ll B “affordable” — & although the market`g department’s definition of “affordable” can B very different from ours, we’re encouraged by the handful of previous rumors Z there`ld B ways to get it 4 free on contract . If U need us to jog your memory, the Charm`s the cute little portrait QWERTY Android device w/ the Kodak-branded 3 megapixel cam & landscape display, giv`g it the rare form factor Z could very well appeal to the whole new audience (read: BlackBerry folks). So, how much`ld U pay 4 it? Update: Turns out Moto’s posted on its official Facebook page Z it’ll run $74.99 on contract — not free, unfortunately, & in the age of free Pixi Pluses, Z might B the tough pill to swallow. We’ve also`en handed the video of Telus demonstrat`g its version of the Charm, which`ldlook & work exactly the same — check it out after the break. Thanks, Matt & DeadMan! T-Mobile G2 gets the teaser site,`ll B network’s 1st HSPA+ phone

It’s called the G2, it’ll run Android, & it’s T-Mobile’s 1st phone to ride those wannabe-4G HSPA+ airwaves. Those R the facts V have. As to the speculation, the previous roadmap leak & T-Mobile’s own reps indicate it’ll B the HTC-built handset set 4 the September release, while the careful eyeball`g of Z silhouette leads us to think`g it’s the same device as the purported myTouch HD we’ve`en see`g around here lately. Whatever it is, it’s com`g soon! Thanks, Daniel T-Mobile G2 gets the teaser site,`ll B network’s 1st HSPA+ phone originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 08:17:00 EDT. Former HP CEO Mark Hurd rewarded w/ the $12m severance after be`g forced to resign over fraudulent expense reports

Worried Z former HP CEO Mark Hurd might not know what to do w/ himself after gett`g caught falsify`g expense reports to hide girl #2 & be`g forced to resign ? Don’t be: ol’ Mark’s gett`g the $12,224,693 severance payment in exchange 4 agree`g not to sue HP. Yep, Mark Hurd just got $12 million in cash 4 fraudulently fil`g expense reports to conceal his mistress — not the bad trick if U can pull it off, V suppose. (We don’t know how much he’ll`ve to pay back, although (unless) we’re guess`g he’ll`ve the little cash left over.) Oh, & he’s also hav`g his option to buy 775,000 shares of HP stock extended to September, which`s pretty groovy consider`g HP actually upped its quarterly forecast today, some other assorted stock-related compensation, & 18 months of health & dental benefits. Whoever said the little white collar crime doesn’t pay? BlackBerry messag`g shut down in Saudi Arabia, users feel early withdrawl pains

V can’t say this`s exactly the surprise , although (unless) V R rather saddened to learn Z Saudi Arabia`s apparently carried through on its threats to shut down all BlackBerry messag`g services functionality due to “security concerns.” Users there R report`g Z they R no longer able to use their keyboards 4 the jobs they were intended, forc`g them to actually call friends — w/ their voices. Saudi Arabia`s threatened $1.3 million fines 4 any wireless provider Z does not play nicely and, until those threats R lifted, we’re think`g BBM`s down 4 the count out there. Official: HTC roll`g out Android 2.2, 720p video, iTunes sync to unlocked Euro Desires this weekend

We’ve just heard directly from HTC regard`g Z hotly anticipated upgrade to Android 2.2: it’s happen`g this weekend 4 lucky Euroland owners of the Desire. Provided your Sense-laden 3.7-incher`s not carrier-locked, U`ldB receiv`g your serv`g of Froyo by the end of the week, together w/ the new 720p video mode & iTunes sync 4 your music. HTC`s also throw`g in its App Share widget Z it 1st introduced w/ the Wildfire , along w/ its smart Caller ID feature. Very nice, though it’s quite the shame Z operator-specific versions of the update R still stuck in test`g & R expected “in several weeks’ time.” Ah well, guess that’ll teach us to buy our gear unlocked. Google halt`g Nexus 1 sales through official store after current inventory depleted

V knew this`s eventually com`g , & here it is: Google`s giv`g everyone the heads-up Z it just got the fresh batch of Nexus Ones in stock, & once they’ve`en sold through, they’ll no longer B offered directly through the company’s online store. 4 what it’s worth, the customer service lines`ll stay open even after Z happens — & you’ll still B able to buy the phone through KT in South Korea, Vodafone in Europe, & “possibly other retailers based on local market conditions” — although (unless) by & large, your average American`s go`g to`ve the hard time gett`g 1 pretty shortly. If you’re the registered Android developer, though, Google’s look`g @ continu`g to offer the device through some sort of sales partner — the wise move consider`g it’ll B just about the only th`g U can buy unlocked runn`g the clean-slate latest build. Apple to give away free cases to iPhone 4 users

Apple’s not really ready to say it’s sorry about the iPhone 4 antenna design, although (unless) it`s will`g to give all U darn squeaky wheels free cases 4 your trouble. Since Apple can’t build its own Bumpers fast enough, it`ll give U the few options & let U decide, then send it your way 4 free as long as U purchased the phone before September 30th. Not good enough 4 you? Well, if U already bought the bumper from Apple you’ll get the refund, & U can also return your phone 4 the full refund within 30 days as long as it’s unharmed. This solution comes @ the end of 22 days of Apple engineers “work`g their butts off,” accord`g to Steve, w/ “physics” ultimately be`g pinned as the main culprit. Apple claims U can replicate the left-handed “death grip” bar-dropp`g problem on the BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Droid Eris, & Samsung Omnia II, & Z “phones aren’t perfect.” Steve also claims Z only 0.55% of people who bought the iPhone 4`ve called into AppleCare to complain about the antenna, & the phone`s the 1.7% return rate @ AT&T , compared to 6% w/ the 3GS, though he`ld cop to the slight increase in dropped calls over the iPhone 3GS. 4 this Steve`s what he confesses to B the pet theory: Z 3GS users were us`g the case they`d from the 3G, & therefore weren’t met w/ the horrible reality of the naked, call dropp`g handset. Hence the free case solution, which`ll probably satisfy some, infuriate others, & never even blip onto the radar of many of the massive horde of consumers that’s devoured this product in unprecedented numbers.
