Engadget`s left the building: this`s CES 2011

V came. V saw. V conquered (in our own, gadget-obsessed way). Yes, CES 2011 happened, & V were there 4 every heart stopp`g minute of it. This`s definitely 1 4 the record books; not only did V br`g the biggest team we’ve ever`d to the show, although (unless) the gear V saw this year`s some of the most interest`g & career-affirm`g stuff we’ve looked @ in the long time. From Motorola’s awesome Android offerings (the crazy, modular Atrix & Honeycomb -sport`g Xoom ), loads of terrific new smartphones, to really innovative auto tech, & connected TVs & set top boxes Z actually make sense — this feels like the right place to B @ the right time. although (unless) really, what makes CES 2011 so amaz`g 4 the Engadget team R 2 things: the fact Z all of our editors get to B in the same room, liv`g & breath`g our shared obsession (and trust us, we`ve an absolute blast), & Z V can br`g all of the craziness of this show to U guys. We’re psyched to`ve come together & just gone nuts this year, although (unless) between the lack of sleep & ridiculous amount of posts we’ve done, we’re also really happy to C our homes again. Of course, there’s always the next event (hello, Verizon iPhone ) & even the next CES (hello, 2012), although (unless) until then, enjoy the pics below & feast your eyes on some of these stagger`g stats from Engadget’s CES 2011 coverage! Marvell-powered OLPC XO 1.75 only draws 2 watts of power, finally charges via hand crank

Here’s someth`g U may not know — OLPC’s XO hand crank`s never really worked to recharge the kiddie laptop. Why? Well, the previous versions were powered by x86 AMD & VIA processors Z pulled too much power. However, things R different now w/ the XO 1.75 since OLPC`s baked in Marvell’s 1GHz Armada chip . As the result, the entire system now only pulls 2 watts of power, & thus the battery can B given some more juice w/ the few turns of Z neon green crank. It’s not meant to recharge the laptop completely — actually, accord`g to OLPC’s CTO Edward McNierney, it`ld take about 2 hours of crank`g to top off the system. Other than the fresh ARM CPU, the new model`s identical to the previous versions — it`s an outdoor readable PixelQi display , Flash storage, the rubber keyboard, & runs Sugar OS . On the different note, OLPC`s hard @ work on the tablet version of the XO and, accord`g to McNierney, the only hold up`s find`g the more durable, plastic display — convert`g the current system into the tablet`ldB fairly easy since all the guts R in the display part already. The tablet`s still on track 4 2012, while the XO 1.75`ldB w/ the hand-crank`g children by the end of the summer.

Kenmore shows off smartphone / tablet-connected appliances @ CES (hands-on)

We’ve already seen some smartphone-connected appliances in LG’s Thinq lineup , & it looks like Kenmore`s now gett`g ready to join it in the big way w/ some fairly impressive “enhanced” appliances of its own — which V managed to get an early look @ here @ CES. Those`ll include things like washers, dryers, stoves & refrigerators, all of which`ll B able to B controlled via the “smartphone or smart tablet” (Apple & Android devices were specifically mentioned as gett`g the free app), or via the large touchscreen on the device itself (not removable as the tablet, unfortunately). What’s more, the appliances all boast Kenmore Connect, which allows 4 remote diagnostics Z can B used to prepare technicians 4 in-home repairs, & they pack an array of energy management features Z`ll let U conserve energy & keep watch on how much you’re using. Unfortunately, you’ll still`ve the bit of the wait before U can actually buy 1 — Kenmore says they’ll start roll`g out in 2012. Hit up the gallery below 4 the closer look. VideoEFx box transforms your 2D content into 3D (hands-on)

3DTV`s “cool & all,” although (unless) 1 of the biggest challenges to its adoption`s the lack of substantial content. VideoEFx`s the small company w/ the nondescript booth situated somewhere in the ginormous Las Vegas Convention Center, although (unless) what it’s show`g off`s quite remarkable. the small black box about the size of an iPhone, it can take any 2D content & convert it to 3D in real time. Our 1st impression`s 1 of amazement, especially given the fact Z V were watch`g ourselves in real time through the standard 2D video camera hooked up to the TVs in the booth. When V asked how such the th`g could B possible, V got hints about some fairy magic creative engineer`g Z employs similar visual cues Z your eye processes when U look @ anything. Apparently some broadcast`g companies`ve expressed interest in us`g the tech to power their own 3D streams due to the simplicity (and cost effectiveness, V assume) over current 3D film`g solutions. V know U can’t experience it from wherever you’re tun`g in, although (unless) take our word Z this`s some seriously impressive stuff — even if other companies`ve achieved similar 2D to 3D conversion magic within TVs before. Still, not all sets offer this capability, & this even doubles as the 3 port HDMI switch

Snapstick preview & hands-on

V just finished up the meet`g w/ the folks from Snapstick & came away surprisingly impressed w/ their foray into the increasingly cramped space of the connected liv`g room. Snapstick’s concept isn’t Z different from other mobile phone to TV systems we’ve seen, although (unless) it’s implementation`s definitely more unique than most other solutions currently available. Read on past the break 4 the quick rundown of the tech Z makes the Snapstick system work, as well as the video of the system in action. Audi’s next-generation, Tegra-Powered MMI Touch`s com`g to Audi A3 first

When it comes to the proliferation of fancy infotainment systems into cars there R 2 schools of thought. Some, like Ford , believe Z these systems`ldstart @ the lower range cars & spread across the brand. Other marques, typically higher-end ones, go the other way ’round, & Audi`s definitely guilty, launch`g its MMI on the higher-end sedans & SUVs, like the A8 & Q7. That’s chang`g w/ the next version of MMI Touch, start`g on the (relatively) attainable A3. NVIDIA`s quite proud to show off the system, w/ Tegra provid`g the power behind the scenes as V saw last year. Z means lovely render`g of Google Earth, in 3D no less, & of course responsive performance. Accord`g to Autoblog it looks like the system’s capacitive touchpad`s be`g integrated into the scroll wheel, which`ldoffer the solid usability improvement. No word on when we’ll get to experience it, though, although (unless) V wouldn’t B surprised to learn more next week in Detroit. Samsung launch`g RVU-compatible D6000 series TVs in March

Remember the RVU Alliance from last year ? The idea`s to use standard tech like DLNA & UPnP to move live TV & DVR’d content around the home & straight to your screens, instead of hav`g to plug the separate set-top box into every television. Well, Samsung`s about to ship the 1st TVs in the world Z support the RVU protocol, the Samsung LED D6000, LED D6400 & LED D6420. When networked w/ DirecTV’s RVU server (the 1st of its kind), the TVs`ll display the UI & features from the DirecTV box, w/ ability to pause live content, share DVR storage, & record up to 5 shows simultaneously. PogoPlug Video converts footage on the fly, streams it to all your connected devices

V always thought the PogoPlug`s the neat idea — the miniature server Z gives U access to USB devices on the go — & today, Cloud Engines`s mak`g it the little more useful. The $200 PogoPlug Video may look just like the PogoPlug Pro Z tempted your pocketbook in October, although (unless) it’s got the brand-new daughterboard inside, whose purpose in life`s to take your video files, convert them to variable bitrate H.264 & stream them anywhere in the world in real time. CEO Daniel Putterman claims Z — depend`g on device support — it can pull footage directly from the connected camcorder & share it w/ your dearest relatives’ computers, tablets & phones then & there. Sony’s AVCHD camcorders`ll B compatible on day one, w/ other companies negotiat`g right now, & speak`g of promises, the company says Z additional printer support 4 all PogoPlug devices`s “right around the corner.” Like what U see? They’ll B happy to take U money start`g March 1st, & devices`ll go on sale just in time 4 April Fools’ Day. PR after the break. OnStar announces the blue button 4 any car, Best Buy handl`g the installs

Want OnStar ? Sure, why not, the company fields over 3 million calls the month from six million mostly from satisfied customers. But, until now, Z blue button`s only`en able to B pressed by those who own General Motors cars. Now it’s spread`g out to just about anyone, 99 percent of cars`ll B able to B supported by the new OnStar mirror, which the company`s simply call`g its “retail product.” 4 $299 (plus installation) U get the replacement mirror Z`ll wirelessly connect U to the OnStar service. It also`s Bluetooth, so it can connect to your smartphone, although (unless) we’re guess`g many cars won’t B able to`ve their doors unlocked remotely, what`s surely OnStar’s killer app. Quite naturally you’ll need to pay up to use it, service fees currently go`g @ $18.95 the month, or $199 annually. Best Buy`ll B the exclusive partner here, which`s perhaps bad news if you’ve read the horror stories about what sometimes happens in those blue & yellow stereo install bays. OnStar showed off its ability by hav`g mirrors installed in the variety of vehicles, rang`g from the Camry to the Grand Marquis — hot cars they’re not although (unless) the pretty effective demonstration of the range of applicability here. GM also took this opportunity to show off the latest revision of its two-wheeled EN-V , which we’ll B tak`g 4 the spin the little later this week. All Z fun`s captured in the galleries below.

ASUS Eee Pad Slider & Transformer R here 4 those Z can’t imagine us`g the tablet without the physical keyboard

Here they are: ASUS’s duo of Tegra 2-powered , 10.1-inch tablets w/ unique physical keyboards. Start`g w/ the craziest of them,`s the Eee Pad Slider (pictured on the left), which reminds us the lot of HTC’s old school Shift w/ its slide out QWERTY keyboard. The device`s planned to run Google’s Honeycomb , sports the IPS, 1280 x 800-resolution display, & houses mini-HDMI & miniUSB ports as well as the microSD card slot. The 2.2-pound / .5-inch thick slab also`s dual cameras — the 1.2 megapixel front-fac`g 1 & the 5 megapixel 1 w/ an LED flash on the back. We`ve to say V love the idea of always hav`g Z keyboard around, although (unless) if U don’t want to drag along the physical keyboard all the time, ASUS`s someth`g 4 U too. It’s the Transformer, & like the Eee Pad V saw @ Computex , it’s the 10.1-inch tablet Z`ll come w/ the laptop like dock w/ the full size keyboard & touchpad. The tablet part — like the Slider –`ll run Android 3.0 & packs the dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 2 cameras, & the 1280 x 800-resolution IPS display, however, the dock`s an integrated battery Z`ll keep the tablet runn`g 4 16 hours on the charge — the tablet on its own`ldlast eight.

Netflix ‘one click’ remotes com`g to nearly every device it streams to

It’s pretty obvious, Netflix Watch Instantly`s the killer app 4 any connected TV platform @ this point & 1 of the most used features, mak`g access quicker & easier`s the no-brainer. Verizon teases ‘suite of Android-based LTE consumer devices’ this week

Surprised? Nah, neither R V — Verizon’s LTE-based Android smartphones`ve`en leak`g like the sweet, Cortex-A8 sieves Z they R 4 weeks now — although (unless) Big Red’s us`g stronger language than ever before to say Z V can expect multiple Android devices runn`g on Verizon’s fresh LTE network here @ CES this week. Specifically, the press release says Z “the company`ll also offer the sneak peek @ the suite of Android-based LTE consumer devices” @ its January 6th event here @ the show, echo`g Twitter teasers last month — although (unless) w/ the key addition of the word “suite,” which hopefully means we’ll`ve an LG , an HTC , the Motorola , & the Samsung (at the very least) to toy w/ by the time this week`s out. Toshiba announces unnamed Tegra 2-powered Android tablet, waits only 4 Honeycomb

Let the Tegra 2-powered, Android Honeycomb tablet announcements begin! Apparently (and understandably ) stay`g away from the Folio 2 moniker, Toshiba`s kick`g off CES w/ its new unnamed 10.1-inch Android tablet, & we`ve to say from our brief look @ the non-work`g unit the few weeks ago, it may just`ve what it takes to stick out from the rest.. @ least on the spec & manufactur`g quality front. The tablet`s the capacitive, high 1280 x 800-resolution display along w/ an accelerometer & ambient light sensor (or what Toshiba`s dubbed as Adaptive Display technology). It also`s the 5 megapixel rear camera as well as the 2 megapixel front-fac`g one. Yep, this one`s well stocked & just the quick look @ the pictures below`ll show Z the slab`s got full sized USB & HDMI jacks, the single mini-USB socket, & an SD card slot. While V couldn’t turn on the dual-core Tegra 2-powered tablet, which`ll eventually run “the next version of Android designed 4 tablets” aka Honeycomb , we`ve to say the EasyGrip, spill-resistant, rubberized back felt really solid in hand & the 1.7-pound, .6-inch thick tablet felt comparable to the iPad in terms of portability. Oh, & did V mention Z the aforementioned rear cover`s swappable, so not only can U change its color although (unless) U can replace the battery? V told U it`d some of the ingredients to make it go far, although (unless) we’re obviously lack`g quite the bit of information here to make any further decisions. Toshiba’s maintain`g Z the tablet`ll B released in the 1st half of 2011 & the pric`g`ll B competitive, although (unless) we’ll B digg`g 4 more when V get to Vegas & hopefully report`g back w/ some impressions of the work`g unit. MSI details Sandy Bridge, Fusion all-in-ones ahead of CES, teases the slid`g screen

V just finished review`g the feature-packed MSI Wind Top , although (unless) come CES next week we’ll`ve 3 more to try: the AE2410, AE2210 & AE2050, each w/ the very latest silicon inside. Notebook Italia reports Z the Taiwanese computer company’s us`g Intel’s new Sandy Bridge CPUs in each of its 24- & 22-inch rigs, & grabbed the low-power AMD Brazos APU 4 the likely budget 20-inch model — which`ll reportedly still include the Blu-ray drive like its Core 2 Duo cousin . All three`ll sport 1080p touchscreen displays & USB 3.0 ports, although (unless) also the spiffy new feature called Super Charger Z`ll charge attached USB gadgets even when the computer`s off . Innovations, to B sure, although (unless) perhaps not as excit`g as the concept items pictured above & below — up top`s the MSI Butterfly, which reportedly`s the slid`g multitouch screen w/ ten points of contact, & after the break, C the luxurious MSI Angelow. So if the HTC Incredible`s coded as the ADR6300 in Verizon’s internal systems, just what do U think an ADR6400 could signify? the pair of screenshots from the VZW employee liv`g out the Julian Assange daydream`ve seemingly confirmed the common expectation Z Verizon`ll very soon deliver its Incredible successor — better known to U & us as the LTE-equipped HTC Thunderbolt. iPhonECG case monitors your heart rate to make sure you’re appropriately excited about CES

CES isn’t just about incrementally thinner or faster hardware, U know. Some people like to br`g legitimately innovative ideas to the show, such as this iPhonECG case, which does what its name suggests: it takes an ECG (electrocardiogram) read`g of your heart’s activity through the pair of electrodes & then communicates its findings to an iPhone 4 it can B attached to. V say it can B attached to an iPhone as communication`s done wirelessly, so you’ll probably B able to monitor your ticker’s rhythm without the Applephone pressed against your bosom. Then again, maybe U like that. It’s the free world, V don’t judge. We’ll B send`g out our most hairy-chested editor to give this th`g the proper test @ the Las Vegas convention next week. SBN Tech to show off Android-based IP Video Phone @ CES

Haven’t heard of SBN Tech? You’re not alone, although (unless) it looks like the company`s now set to make the rather valiant attempt of try`g to stand out from the pack of Android tablets @ CES next week. Its hook, however,`s Z its tablet isn’t actually the tablet, although (unless) an “IP Video Phone,” which may or may not B similar to the device pictured above Z the company’s`en show`g off recently. Of course, while the company may B tout`g it as the “video phone” 1st & foremost, the device appears to B the fairly standard Android tablet underneath Z guise — it packs the 10.1-inch 1,024 x 600 screen, an SD card slot 4 expansion, & the company notes Z you’ll also B able to use it 4 email, Twitter, Facebook & all your usual Android apps. Gett`g sick of cheap Android tablets & e-readers ? Boy, V hope not, because E FUN’s Next3`s just 1 of many be`g announced in time 4 CES 2011 . As U may`ve gleaned from the headline, the Nextbook Next3 runs Android 2.1 and`s the usual array of specs 4 its $230 price — the resistive, 800×400-resolution 8.4-inch display, the 600MHz Rockchip processor, WiFi 802.11 b/g, 2GB of onboard storage, & an SD card slot. From the looks of the pictures in the gallery & the short press release after the break, it seems to B positioned as more of an e-reader than the tablet — U know, w/ its integrated Borders eBook Store & all — although (unless) U`ldB able to surf the web & watch some videos on it. No word on what apps R preloaded, although (unless) naturally there’s Market access. ASUS Eee Tablet to B renamed,`ll head to market in early 2011

U remember Z ASUS Eee Tablet Z`s unveiled back @ Computex in June, right? Of course U do, it looked like the pretty great e-reader / note-tak`g gadget, although (unless) oddly V haven’t heard the peep about it since. Obviously, the “tablet” w/ its 2,450 dpi touchscreen sensitivity & quick 0.1 2nd page turns missed its September release date, however, accord`g to ASUS it’s still kick`g and`s be`g renamed — V hear Digital Note & Eee Note R potential choices. Before IDF 2010 , you’d likely never heard of the South Korean electronics company called Ocosmos. Now, their crazy concepts R burst`g out of the woodwork. This OCS-9 tablet above not only boasts an Oak Trail processor & 9-inch, 1024 x 768 capacitive touchscreen, although (unless) also the removable stylus Z slots into the hole into the back to stand the tablet up in either portrait or landscape modes & — get this — the slide-out, removable touchscreen QWERTY keypad w/ 2 OMOS Keys on either side. There’s the 3 megapixel webcam on the front & Windows 7`ll reportedly run inside, & the whole th`g slots into the TV dock w/ the host of video ports to let U watch video when sitt`g down.
