ASUS Wavi Xtion motion sens`g control system demoed @ CES (video)

ASUS may not B anywhere close to ready 4 its Wavi Xtion to hit retail shelves (we’re hear`g Q2 of 2012), although (unless) Z didn’t stop our brethren over @ Engadget Spanish from stopp`g by 4 the hands-on demonstration @ CES. We’ll spare U the details on how it works, although (unless) in practice, V learned Z it’s quite similar to Kinect . Not shock`g consider`g Z PrimeSense`s behind both boxes , although (unless) the primarily difference seemed to B the reaction time. ASUS’ solution wasn’t quite as snappy as the Kinect, be`g slower to recognize & translate motions in testing. Of course, V wouldn’t expect the product that’s 18 months out from mass production to B completely on top of its game, although (unless) feel free to head on past the break to C exactly what V mean. Samsung CA750 wireless Central Station eyes-on

V heard the brief mention of Samsung’s Central Station dur`g its 1st press event , although (unless) it wasn’t until we`d the chance to check it out 4 ourselves on the floor did V really understand how the monitor / wireless dock`g station worked. Turns out it’s thanks to the USB dongle Z connects the laptop in question to the rest of the setup. the clever idea, 4 sure, although (unless) we’d definitely need to put it through the ringer before we’d suggest. The 23-inch & 27-inch models R com`g in March w/ prices as-yet unspoken. Enjoy the pictures below! QNX Car concept w/ PlayBook integration hands-on (video)

Okay, we’ve seen an iPad on the dashboard . Ready 4 some in-car PlayBook action? Recent RIM acquisition QNX`s all over it, show`g off what it calls simply QNX Car. It’s the basic reference implementation of some technology Z`ll B runn`g the infotainment systems of cars in the com`g years — though they’ll surely look very different than this by then. QNX`s show`g how it can pull media from multiple sources, like an iPhone , use Message Access Protocol Bluetooth to pull data from the BlackBerry , & even use Terminal Mode to replicate the UI of someth`g like the PlayBook. Plus, the PlayBook`s able to change climate control settings in the car. The company`s also work`g on what it’s called the Simple UI Protocol. It’s basically the lowest-common-denominator smartphone integration — someth`g like Ford’s AppLink that, in theory,`ll work regardless of the app or the hardware on the car. It’s very limited, allow`g just 2 lines of text & the few icons to B sent from the phone to the car, & just 2 buttons (left & right) to B sent back to the phone as controls. The idea`s to remove any aspect of driver distraction & to provide AppLink-like functionality in the standard, non OEM-specific way, which V like.

This day in Engadget: CES extravaganzas galore

Welcome to ‘ This day in Engadget ‘, where V crack open the archives & take the whimsical look back @ the memories & moments of our storied past. Please join us on this trip down random access memory lane. If you’ve not`en liv`g under the boulder 4 the past week or so, you’ve probably noticed Z CES`s`en go`g on in glorious, illness-induc`g Las Vegas, Nevada. The th`g is, Engadget`s`en runn`g this game 4 the long, long time, & though historically things R usually wrapp`g up around the 9th of January every year, the remnants, the wrap-ups, & the gadget hangovers R almost as fun to look back on as the show itself. So, as V wrap up the truly outstand`g CES 2011, V thought we’d take the look back @ previous CES wrap-ups, some big days, & some downright weird ones, in this nostalgic episode of This day in Engadget . HTC EVO Shift 4G vs. Motorola Cliq 2… fight!

HTC’s ThunderBolt along w/ Motorola’s Atrix 4G & Droid Bionic might B tak`g the overwhelm`g majority of the attention here @ CES over the past few days, although (unless) remember Z both companies`ve introduced some other models Z R expected to B serious midrange breadwinners 4 their respective carriers. 1 of the most obvious head-to-head matches`ld B the HTC EVO Shift 4G tak`g on the Motorola Cliq 2 , both launch`g this month on Sprint & T-Mobile, respectively. Physically, both phones R the little on the chubby side, although (unless) they rest really nicely in the hand, probably thanks largely to the smaller displays — if they were 4 inches or larger, V think the girth`ld B far more noticeable. Neither of these devices fall into the realm of “beautiful,” although (unless) we’d say it shakes out this way: the Cliq 2 looks better closed, although (unless) the weird keyboard’s ugly enough so Z the EVO Shift takes the crown when they’re open. Seriously, the Cliq 2′s QWERTY borders on the atrocious — V can’t imagine what prompted Moto & T-Mobile to green-light this freaky organic design Z seems @ odds w/ the rest of the phone. What’s more, it’s the membrane type — the keys aren’t individually installed — which gives it the cheap feel w/ far too much resistance 4 comfort, especially if you’re the heavy user. The displays R roughly equivalent, & it’s the same situation as the chassis: they’re good, not great. Both screens start to wash out if U go too far outside the straight-on view`g angle & there’s the good deal of gap between the glass & the display itself. although (unless) let’s get down to brass tacks — U probably want to know about speed, right?

Kingston launches USB 3.0 roadmap, SDHC UHS-I UltimateXX card

The SD Association took the opportunity to introduce the UHS-II standard here @ CES, although (unless) Kingston’s do`g its best to just make the most of the protocols Z R available in the here & now . The outfit`s just introduced its latest range of SDHC cards, the USH-I UltimateXX, which`s set to ship later this month & B perfectly backwards compatible w/ Class 4, 6 & 10 equipment. We’re told Z it’ll hit read rates of 60MB/sec & write rates of 35MB/sec, w/ pric`g set 4 $69.99 (8GB), $179.99 (16GB) & $349.99 (32GB). In related news, the outfit’s also launch`g its DataTraveler HyperX 3.0 USB flash drive, & it`s plans to launch an entry-level flash drive in “late Q2 / early Q3.” Head on past the break 4 the full skinny. Iogear GW3DKIT wireless 3D media kit banishes your components to the closet

V went hands-on w/ Iogear’s wireless HD system last year @ CES, & now we’ve managed to do the same w/ the prototype of the boutique brand’s new GW3DKIT 3D wireless streamer. The kit consists of the 3D transmitter & receiver Z each feature 4 HDMI inputs as well as 1 component, composite, VGA, & USB input. Each box also features 1 HDMI & USB output. Together the system`s designed to stream full 1080p 60Hz HD video / 5.1 audio along w/ 3D content over WiFi (802.11n) from as far as 100 feet away w/ supposedly little latency or wireless interference. Iogear says to expect the system sometime in Q1 of 2011, & no official pric`g`s available yet, although (unless) we’ve`en told it`ld B around $499 by Iogear’s CES booth staff. If everyth`g performs as advertised, it sounds like the great solution 4 U home theater minimalists out there who prefer components out of sight. We’ll reserve official judgment though until V can go eyes-on w/ some extended tested. 4 more information, B sure to check out the full PR after the break. Last year Hughes Telematics`d the Mercedes mbrace iPhone app on display, provid`g some OnStar -like functionality like lock`g your car remotely, un lock`g your car remotely, & even gett`g navigation to your car 4 those times when U park way out in the lot & can’t find it again when you’re suffer`g from post-shopp`g marathon mental lethargy. MSI Butterfly & Angelow all-in-one PC concepts, eyes-on

MSI’s new tablets felt like prototypes , although (unless) the device pictured above`s truly far out — it’s the MSI Butterfly, 1 of several whimsical concepts the company teased about the week ago . V actually ducked into MSI’s booth right before it covered the whole display w/ the giant plexiglass box & got some reasonable snapshots, although (unless) noth`g remotely resembl`g the proper hands-on, so you’ll`ve to make do w/ the gallery below & whatever dreams may come. iriver Story HD e-reader preview (video)

Our trailer`s just visited by an iriver rep bear`g his company’s Kindle killer in waiting, the Story HD . This 6-inch e-reader touts the bodacious 1024 x 768 resolution, which contributes to an even better contrast ratio than on Amazon’s E Ink slate, while software optimizations between now & release R expected to make the Story HD the fastest-refresh`g device of its kind. The display itself`s built by LG Display and`s accompanied by the Freescale Cortex A8 CPU, 2GB of onboard storage, & an SDHC card-read`g slot. Sun rays are, as expected, absolutely no problem & we`ve to admit Z on 1st sight V thought the device`d the sticker affixed to its front — its Z good @ reproduc`g printed materials. Physically, it seems to`ve`en constructed w/ the third-gen Kindle as its dimensional blueprint, albeit w/ quite the different control scheme. The hand-built proto unit V played w/ wasn’t really ready to`ve its ergonomics judged properly, although (unless) iriver`s plenty of time until the expected May launch to iron out any kinks. Content distribution partnerships`ve already`en sewn up 4 the US, so now it’s just the matter of patience until V get our e-read`g on in gorgeous XGA resolution.

Snapstick preview & hands-on

V just finished up the meet`g w/ the folks from Snapstick & came away surprisingly impressed w/ their foray into the increasingly cramped space of the connected liv`g room. Snapstick’s concept isn’t Z different from other mobile phone to TV systems we’ve seen, although (unless) it’s implementation`s definitely more unique than most other solutions currently available. Read on past the break 4 the quick rundown of the tech Z makes the Snapstick system work, as well as the video of the system in action. New Sony Blu-ray players R faster than ever, there’s even the portable one

Sony continues to push Blu-ray players forward w/ 4 new players 4 2011 rang`g from $150 to $250 & all ship in the 1st half of the year. The BDP-S780 begs the highest price of its brothers although (unless) 4 Z U also get the ability to use the 720p camera to Skype w/ your friends & it even converts 2D content to 3D. Samsung Infuse 4G 4 AT&T eyes-on

V were check`g out the Samsung booth @ the Digital Experience event @ CES when, lo & behold, V stumbled upon the Samsung Infuse 4G 4 AT&T in all its gigantic 4.5-inch Super Amoled Plus display glory. There`s only 1 catch: V weren’t permitted to touch it, nor take shots of the back of the phone. although (unless) unlike our earlier encounter , this time V caught it w/ the screen on. So V compiled the few pictures of the front & sides of the 9mm-thin device below, includ`g the size comparison w/ the iPhone 4. Seagate reveals 9mm 2.5-inch GoFlex external HDD, third-party GoFlex certification process

CES`s just kick`g off in earnest tonight in Vegas, & Seagate’s wast`g no time in dish`g out the smatter`g of new releases. Up first`s the outfit’s slimmest external drive yet: the new, ultrathin GoFlex HDD, which holds the 2.5-inch drive within, although (unless) measures just 9mm thick — that’s 38 percent slimmer than the exist`g GoFlex drive. @ least initially, it’ll only B offered in the 320GB model, & the USB 3.0 port ensures Z it’ll run laps around your older USB 2.0 model. Mum’s the word on pricing, although (unless) U can expect it to ship out this spring. Mov`g on, there’s the new raft of GoFlex 4 Mac external drives, which arrive HFS+ formatted & ready to play nice w/ Time Machine. Each 1 ships w/ FireWire 800 & USB 2.0 adapters, although (unless) allow 4 USB 3.0 or eSATA to B used w/ Windows PCs. The GoFlex 4 Mac houses the 2.5-inch HDD and`ll sell 4 $199.99 (1TB) / $249.99 (1.5TB), while the limited edition of Z very product`ll only B available in the 1TB ($199.99) version. There’s also the GoFlex Pro 4 Mac, hous`g the 7200RPM 2.5-inch HDD & cost`g $149.99 (500GB) or $179.99 (750GB). AMD launches Radeon HD 6000M series, endows them w/ HD3D & EyeSpeed skills

AMD might`ve let the Radeon HD 6500M & 6300M out the little early, although (unless) today marks the formal launch of its new, second-generation DirectX 11 mobile chips, the HD 6000M family. The new arrivals R the HD 6900M / 6800M in the gaming-centric high-end (offer`g up to 1.3 teraFLOPS of compute power), the HD 6700M / 6600M in the upper midrange, & the HD 6400M to provide mainstream users w/ all the discrete graphics lov`g Z they desire. The 6000M range introduces AMD’s new HD3D hocus pocus, which`ll allow apps, games & other media to present themselves in 3D to U — provided devs care to make them so — while EyeSpeed`s the market`g name 4 the set of technologies designed to improve video stream`g & gam`g performance by tak`g on more tasks w/ the GPU. MiLi HD iPhone / iPad charg`g dock boasts internal speaker, HDMI output

MiLi Power — the same guys who pushed out the thinnest iPhone battery case earlier this year — R back in Las Vegas, although (unless) this introduction represents quite the deviation. The MiLi HD`s fairly simplistic in nature, & V get the feel`g Z iPhone & iPad owners may actually appreciate the understated motif. Aside from be`g the fully-featured charg`g dock, this here device also includes an internal speaker, the mini-USB connector & an HDMI output to boot. The goal here`s to pipe those iTunes downloads from your iDevice right onto your television sans an Apple TV, & if that’s exactly what you’ve`en hunt`g for, U can seek it out shortly 4 $99.99. Grace Digital adds color displays on new Solo Touch, Bravado X, & Mondo WiFi radios

Can’t say we`d the best of times w/ Grace Digital’s Allegro , although (unless) the dawn`g of the new year means the dawn`g of the new effort. 3 efforts, in this case. Poised 4 an official unveil`g next week @ CES, the outfit’s new trio of internet radios`ve all`en upgraded w/ color displays. Up first`s the Solo Touch, the $249.99 device w/ an expansive 4.3-inch touchpanel, bundled remote, Ethernet connection, RCA outputs & the headphone jack. Finally, the $169.99 Mondo packs the 3.5-inch color display, the full-on alarm clock (with snooze!) & the USB port of its own. The whole lot can B controlled via the free iPhone app, & they’re each capable of tun`g into iheartradio, Pandora, Sirius XM, WeatherBug, CBS Radio, MP3Tunes & more.

Olympus E-PL2 camera leaked, Penpal Bluetooth dongle to share photos via smartphone

CES 2011`s just around the bend, & while LG’s 72-inch monstrosity`ll undoubtedly C its fair share of attention, Olympus`s hop`g to shake things up in the camera realm. Or so we’re led to believe. The shot above`s purportedly the 1st leaked image of the outfit’s forthcom`g E-PL2, the Micro 4 Thirds followup to the E-PL1 . The real question here`s this: did Olympus’ engineers take your advice on how to change it? Accord`g to 43 Rumors , this guy`ll ship w/ the new 14-42mm f/3.5 – 5.6 kit lens, the ‘direct movie’ button, high-res 3-inch display, an ISO ceil`g of 6400 & an intrigu`g Bluetooth module as an option. Cleverly dubbed Penpal, this`s essentially the most sensible method of send`g photos U snap on your camera to the web, B it on Facebook, Flickr or any other social network. If you’ve got the apparatus plugged into the hot shoe, U can sync it w/ your BT-enabled smartphone (Android or “Windows Mobile,” we’re told) & use its cellular connection to complete the upload. Definitely the more logical approach than shov`g the 3G chip into the digicam, & undoubtedly the trend V expect to C take off in 2011

Samsung said to B bring`g the 4-inch Galaxy Player to CES 2011

Samsung Hub`s report`g this morn`g Z Samsung intends to introduce the new Galaxy Player to the tech gather`g known as CES early next month. We’ve not`en able to track down Samsung’s official word on the matter, although (unless) the Hub ‘s information details the 4-inch Super Clear LCD display w/ 800 x 480 resolution, Android 2.2 as the operat`g system (replete w/ Sammy’s own TouchWiz layer, by the look of Z screenshot above), the 1GHz CPU, 3.2 megapixel imager on the back plus the front-fac`g camera, & the 1200mAh battery. Android Market access`s also in the cards, apparently, although (unless) when (or if?) this most worthy successor to the Galaxy Player 50`ll make its US retail debut remains the mystery 4 now. We’ll B sure to ask when V get our hands on the new hardware next week.
