Moneual DSPC puts the monitor on your computer case, welcomes your widgets

CES`s the big place, way bigger than your 1st apartment, so hopefully you’ll forgive us 4 miss`g the Moneual Lab DSPC on the show floor. Z stands 4 Dual Screen PC, the case sport`g the decidedly tall display Z could make 4 the useful desktop extension despite subscrib`g to no aspect ratios heretofore known by man. Unfortunately no specs were provided 4 resolution or size, although (unless) V could C throw`g your image editor’s toolbox over there, maybe the chat window, or just load`g it up w/ widgets as in this picture. However, w/ an anticipated cost of $1,500, we’re think`g U could instead buy the properly large 2nd monitor — & the new desk to put it on. Qualcomm unveils dual-core Snapdragon reference handset @ CES 2011

NVIDIA’s Tegra 2`s tear`g up up on the CES 2011 show floor in the host of new tablets , although (unless) unbeknownst to us, Qualcomm’s long -awaited dual-core Snapdragon made the pair of cameo appearances as well. The first`s in ASUS’ Eee Pad MeMO , which showed off its pressure-sensitive stylus action on the floor, & the second`s in the new Qualcomm reference design U C immediately above. Accord`g to the video released on Qualcomm’s website — which U can watch after the break — Qualcomm attempted to distract tech journalists from Verizon’s press conference by giv`g them the sneak peek @ the HTC Thunderbolt here instead. Then, V like to imagine, the company brainwashed the lot into believ`g the 1.2GHz MSM8660 w/ Adreno 220 graphics`s destined 4 the host of tablets & phones. Of course, if that’s actually the case, we’ll gladly join the throng. Where do V sign up? Espert Identity Tab E301 & E201 hands-on preview

Android tablets aren’t exactly in short supply @ CES 2011, although (unless) the Espert Identity Tab stands out — despite hail`g from the manufacturer we’d never heard of before the show. Espert’s got 2 slick 7-inch slates on the floor, & while the E201 mostly cribs from Samsung’s WiFi-only Galaxy Tab — right down to 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird chip — the flagship Espert E301 pumps up the pixel density w/ the 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen, adds an all-metal case, the mobile DTV antenna, & 3G connectivity. V poked & prodded these tablets all over & got the peek @ the full spec sheets, so after U peruse our gallery below, hit the break 4 details! Gallery: Espert Identity Tab E301 1st hands-on! Motorola’s CES 2011 booth tour

To say Motorola’s`d the stellar show`ld B the massive understatement. Betwixt the Motorola Atrix 4G , the Xoom , Droid Bionic & to the lesser extent the CLIQ 2 , they’ve`en reborn & R the star of the show. Of course, in order to peddle your wares @ CES U need the booth — the more garish the better,`s the usual fare — & Moto’s`s massive & bedecked & badazzled in light w/ more flair than you’d need to work in the place like Chotchke’s. So, V wandered about, took in the sights, the sounds, & grabbed some pics & the short vid of what V saw. Kenmore shows off smartphone / tablet-connected appliances @ CES (hands-on)

We’ve already seen some smartphone-connected appliances in LG’s Thinq lineup , & it looks like Kenmore`s now gett`g ready to join it in the big way w/ some fairly impressive “enhanced” appliances of its own — which V managed to get an early look @ here @ CES. Those`ll include things like washers, dryers, stoves & refrigerators, all of which`ll B able to B controlled via the “smartphone or smart tablet” (Apple & Android devices were specifically mentioned as gett`g the free app), or via the large touchscreen on the device itself (not removable as the tablet, unfortunately). What’s more, the appliances all boast Kenmore Connect, which allows 4 remote diagnostics Z can B used to prepare technicians 4 in-home repairs, & they pack an array of energy management features Z`ll let U conserve energy & keep watch on how much you’re using. Unfortunately, you’ll still`ve the bit of the wait before U can actually buy 1 — Kenmore says they’ll start roll`g out in 2012. Hit up the gallery below 4 the closer look. Jungo & RealVNC partner up, aim to marry phones & infotainment systems

Quietly, in-car infotainment systems`ve progressed greatly here @ CES 2011 . What started the few years back w/ the integration of SYNC into Ford vehicles`s blossomed into an industry-wide obsession , & now 2 of the biggest names Z work behind the scenes R join`g up to better integrate mobiles (and applications) w/ vehicle entertainment systems. Jungo & RealVNC’s newfound bond`s resulted in the CEA-approved solution to make Z kind of magic happen, & it’s 1 Z just so happens to support Terminal Mode . The combined Automotive Connectivity middleware`ll enable the car’s head unit to automatically detect, access & control mobile devices in the vehicle & display their content on the screen in the dashboard. The design combines VNC (remote access & control) technology from RealVNC w/ Jungo’s tech, featur`g device connectivity, media & network management, USB & Bluetooth protocol stacks. Hard to say when automakers`ll grab hold of this stuff & start offer`g it from the factory, although (unless) if V know anyth`g about progress in the automotive industry, we’d say we’re still the year or so out. Kno single & dual-screen tablets hands-on (video)

U know about Kno right? Yep, it’s Z giant dual-screen tablet up there that’s meant 4 students, & while we`d seen an early version of it & its single-screen brother about six months ago, V figured we’d take the closer look @ the shipp`g versions here @ CES. Our 1st impression of the th`g`s Z it’s 1 awesome tablet 4 tak`g notes. Both the dual-screen & single-screen versions come w/ the magnetic stylus, which not only latches onto the side of the screen although (unless) provides an incredibly smooth ink`g experience. As you`ll C in the video below, U can write over text in the textbook & even create the Post-it note. The palm rejection`s also top notch, & consider`g your entire wrist`s to rest on the display to take notes @ the top of the screen, it’s pretty clutch. The rest of the hardware`s equally as 1st rate — the metal make obviously makes ‘em both quite heavy (the single tablet`s 2.6 pounds & the dual-screen 1 5.6 pounds), although (unless) they feel very rigid & V really dig the etched edges, which were designed specifically to mimic pages in the textbook. The bright 1440 x 900-resolution IPS displays provide very wide view`g angles. So, how’s the Linux-based software interface

Viliv X7 & X10 Android tablets hands-on

Viliv`d its new Android tablets on display 4 us to get our grubby hands on, & the company continues to impress us w/ its sleek designs & attractive feature sets. The X10′s claim to fame`s its monstrous 8300 mAh battery which`ldyield over ten hours of use even w/ its 10.2-inch display. What V saw`s only the prototype, although (unless) it doesn’t seem Z the battery added any additional bulk to the svelte design. The X7 seven inch model`ldlook pretty familiar, consider`g it`s essentially the same exact enclosure as Z X70 slate V spent time w/ earlier (the only difference`s the OS & some tweaked buttons). Both tablets`ve the Cortex A8 processor chugg`g away @ 1 GHz, front & rear 1.3 / 3 megapixel cams respectively, & support 4 3G. They were currently runn`g Froyo but`ll ultimately ship w/ Gingerbread. When V mentioned Honeycomb V couldn’t exactly get the straight answer, although (unless) it’s the safe bet Z won’t happen off the bat & the very vague “3.0 (TBD)” note in the press release doesn’t make anyth`g more clear. Check out these twin tablets gett`g cozy in our gallery shots below. Fl`g iPad joystick thumbs-on

Ask any real gamer about gam`g on the touchscreen, & the 1st th`g you’ll hear`s he or she lament`g over the lack of physical buttons. Ten 1 Design aims to remedy this legitimate complaint w/ its Fl`g joystick add-ons 4 the iPad. The product`s simple enough, the twisted piece of plastic w/ capacitive contact points in the center & suction cups to stick it to the screen. They feel quite like the joysticks on the PSP, & make gam`g on the device seriously more enjoyable — not to mention natural feel`g — & other than Z there’s not much else to say. Oh wait, did V mention they cost $25… each? Yeah, total buzzkill. Gallery: Fl`g iPad joystick thumbs-on Fl`g iPad joystick thumbs-on originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Jan 2011 12:21:00 EDT. NVIDIA shows us Tegra 2 gameplay on Atrix 4G & Optimus 2X (video)

V can’t imagine how this might`ve slipped your attention, although (unless) LG & Motorola used this year’s CES to roll out the smartphone world’s 1st dual-core devices in the shape of the Atrix 4G & Optimus 2X . Both R built around NVIDIA’s 1GHz Tegra 2 chip, which`s`en the most popular th`g out here in Vegas after the free food & shuttle rides (Moto even`s the Droid Bionic , the 4.3-incher bound 4 Verizon, us`g it). although (unless) what does Z extra core matter to U ? Well, aside from facilitat`g 1080p video playback on both phones, it does make them quite formidable mobile gam`g stations. NVIDIA took the time to show us the couple of games be`g handled w/ ease by the 2X & Atrix before not`g Z it isn’t leav`g it entirely up to Google to provide the compell`g content 4 its hardware. Gam`g is, after all, close to the GeForce maker’s heart, & V were told Z NVIDIA`s work`g closely w/ developers to help them exploit the added firepower of Tegra 2 so as to deliver prettier, shinier things on screen. V were also informed of the introduction of the Tegra Zone, an Android app designed to serve as the showcase of Tegra partners’ wares, whether they B video or gam`g content, though U shouldn’t fear the specter of fragmentation here — it’s not the separate app store, any purchases`ll B directed through the Android Market.

iPad 2 mockup teases 128GB storage, exhibits speaker grille we’ve seen before

Apple itself might not B @ CES, although (unless) the prospective upgrade of its iPad to version two`s accessory manufacturers (or @ least manufacturers’ imaginations) work`g overtime. We’ve just come across our 2nd iPad 2 mockup, this 1 the lot more comprehensive than the first, which seems to mesh well w/ some earlier imagery we’ve seen of the supposed next-gen Apple tablet. Not only that, its rear label reveals an A1337 product code — 1 that’s also shared by the current iPad WiFi + 3G — & lists 128GB of onboard storage, 2 times the current tablet’s maximum. V don’t know what material it’s made out of, although (unless) it felt felt the same as the current iPad’s aluminum shell. All Z said, this`s still just the mockup from the no-name accessory maker & we’re just as will`g to believe it`s put together on the basis of some decent rumor research as V R to think Z it really`s the iPad 2. No harm in brows`g some pictures of this 9.4mm-thick device, though eh? Energizer rolls into CES w/ new power packs, inductive chargers, solar products, & more

We’ve seen the handful of new Energizer cases & charges crop up over the past few months, although (unless) the company’s turned up @ CES w/ those & the ton more, & V got up close w/ their complete lineup. Z includes the AP1204 iPhone battery case, the AP750 EnergiStick backup battery 4 any microUSB-equipped phone (pictured above), the Energi To Go SP1001 solar charges 4 smartphones & mobile devices, the whole range of solar / crank-powered flashlights, & its Inductive Charger complete w/ cases 4 the iPhone 4 & the replacement cover 4 the BlackBerry(R) Curve 8900, among the host of other poewr-related products. BlackBerry PlayBook preview

V just played w/ the wonderful tablet, & it wasn’t runn`g Android, webOS, iOS, or even Windows. It`s runn`g the funky realtime operat`g system called QNX Z RIM bought in April, combined w/ WebKit & the heap`g help`g of Flash, & plans on releas`g to the world in Q1 of this year. The BlackBerry PlayBook`s surprisingly polished & responsive @ this stage, even though RIM says it`s the lot of work to still left to do. In fact, the only th`g frustrat`g about our roughly 30 minutes w/ the tablet (under the car`g gaze of Mike Lazaridis)`s the fact Z U can’t buy an actual BlackBerry phone right now that’s anywhere near this enjoyable to use. Follow after the break as V talk through the product, along w/ the video walkthrough & stress test of Z dual-core proc’s multitask`g chops. Toshiba’s unnamed Android, Tegra 2-powered tablet powers on!

Well,`ld U look @ what V found hang`g around Toshiba’s CES kick-off party. Okay, so Tosh’s still unnamed tablet wasn’t runn`g Honeycomb like the final unit will, although (unless) Toshiba’s loaded Android 2.2 on there to give us the better idea of how it`ll work when it’s finally ready. There’s really not much V can say Z V didn’t already say before — it’s still the very nicely made tablet & we’re really digg`g Z rubberized back. As 4 the screen, the view`g angles were quite wide & Toshiba showed off its Resolution + , which`ll enhance video or photos on the fly to make them look more HDish. Sony poster @ CES shows off unannounced, extremely slim-look`g phone

Sony’s CES banners`ve`en unfurled around the Las Vegas Convention Center here & 1 of them`s the particularly alluring, & particularly skinny, handset to show us. The above image of half the touchscreen handset (more closeup photography of which you’ll find in the gallery below) shows the Sony Ericsson brand & what looks like the 3.5mm headphone jack — the latter of which`ld suggest Z this phone`s no more than six or seven millimeters in width. Even more allur`g`s the promise of “more entertainment @ the touch of the button,” suggest`g some process`g & graphics firepower contained within as well — could it B SE’s answer to the dual-core LG Optimus 2X? Verizon teases ‘suite of Android-based LTE consumer devices’ this week

Surprised? Nah, neither R V — Verizon’s LTE-based Android smartphones`ve`en leak`g like the sweet, Cortex-A8 sieves Z they R 4 weeks now — although (unless) Big Red’s us`g stronger language than ever before to say Z V can expect multiple Android devices runn`g on Verizon’s fresh LTE network here @ CES this week. Specifically, the press release says Z “the company`ll also offer the sneak peek @ the suite of Android-based LTE consumer devices” @ its January 6th event here @ the show, echo`g Twitter teasers last month — although (unless) w/ the key addition of the word “suite,” which hopefully means we’ll`ve an LG , an HTC , the Motorola , & the Samsung (at the very least) to toy w/ by the time this week`s out. Samsung announces $299 HMX-Q10 camcorder, makes it work upside down

Lefty? V feel ya — sometimes modern camcorders just aren’t built 4 those w/ alternate dominant proclivities, although (unless) Samsung ‘s HMX-Q10 most certainly is. Though, really, it’d B great 4 anyone who`s felt the need to keep on film`g while us`g their right hand to cl`g desperately onto the grabrail or the like. It offers the compact design w/ the prominent record button right on its fanny, about the only physical control U really need to worry about. The rest displayed on the 2.7-inch touchscreen, which automatically flips itself if U hold the camera upside down. Images R beamed through the 10x (2.75 – 27.5mm) optical zoom & then splayed across the 5 megapixel sensor, which enables full HD record`g — albeit @ 60i. iPhonECG case monitors your heart rate to make sure you’re appropriately excited about CES

CES isn’t just about incrementally thinner or faster hardware, U know. Some people like to br`g legitimately innovative ideas to the show, such as this iPhonECG case, which does what its name suggests: it takes an ECG (electrocardiogram) read`g of your heart’s activity through the pair of electrodes & then communicates its findings to an iPhone 4 it can B attached to. V say it can B attached to an iPhone as communication`s done wirelessly, so you’ll probably B able to monitor your ticker’s rhythm without the Applephone pressed against your bosom. Then again, maybe U like that. It’s the free world, V don’t judge. We’ll B send`g out our most hairy-chested editor to give this th`g the proper test @ the Las Vegas convention next week. NYT: Next batch of Google TV devices delayed, pend`g software updates

V were expect`g to C the slew of new Google TV -powered displays & boxes @ CES in the couple of weeks, although (unless) now The New York Times`s report`g the list of new product partners @ the show may B much shorter than expected. The cause`s reported to B Google’s last minute decision to ask 4 more time to work on its software first, result`g in no new hardware from LG, Sharp & Toshiba @ the show, leav`g only Samsung & VIZIO to show off their products. The always popular unnamed sources now peg tim`g 4 the next full fledged assault of Google TV hardware as after the company completes updates includ`g the addition of the Android Market some time next year. Of course, Chrome OS & Honeycomb already provide plenty of examples of the disconnect between the good folks @ Mountain View & their hardware partners, although (unless) w/ some already cast`g doubt on the platform’s potential, & the company’s ability to work out licens`g deals w/ Hollywood, it’d B good to C more than last week’s partial facelift as the sign of what`s to come.
