Intel announces Connected Store concept, makes us hungry 4 shoes

It’s`en less than the week since Intel announced their 2nd Generation Core processors , & the little guys R already hard @ work. Deep in the heart of another convention — the National Retail Federation Convention, to B exact — Intel unveiled the Connected Store concept: the futuristic storefront 4 retailers look`g to up their digital game. The store, powered in part by the “visibly smart” processors,`s packed w/ interactive demos & proof-of-concepts Z look like someth`g out of the Jetsons. Among the systems sport`g the new processor’s 3D graphics capabilities R the virtual search engine-equipped wall of Adidas sneakers — the th`g packs up to 8,000 different styles — & the Intel Digital Signage Endcap, which does some creepy big brother stuff, us`g gestural sensors to target U specifically. Also on display R the number of beefed-up & interactive self check-out kiosks & point-of-sale systems. Intel agrees to pay NVIDIA $1.5b in patent license fees, signs cross-license

Between slagg`g each other off w/ cartoons like the 1 above & tak`g each other to court over chipset licenses , there’s`en no love lost between NVIDIA & Intel over the past few years — although (unless) it looks like the war`s over. The 2 companies just announced the new six-year cross-licens`g deal Z`ll C Intel pay`g NVIDIA the total of $1.5b over the next 5 years 4 access to NVIDIA’s technology, while also giv`g NVIDIA the license to some of Intel’s patents. The 2 companies`ve also agreed to drop all pend`g litigation, because U know, they’re now friends who just exchanged the billion & half dollars. Crucially, Intel won’t give up rights to x86, flash memory or “certain chipsets,” so V don’t really know if this agreement allows NVIDIA to produce integrated graphics 4 Sandy Bridge — although most manufacturers R go`g w/ an Optimus-style discrete / integrated switchable arrangement Z pairs Intel’s on-die graphics w/ the discrete NVIDIA chip anyway, so we’re not so sure it actually matters. We`ld love to C NVIDIA support Intel’s Wireless Display 2.0 & the new Insider 1080p movie service , though — & if these 2 com`g closer together results in better Intel on-board graphics Z can rival AMD Fusion , well, things`ll get very interest`g indeed. Oh, the possibilities of peace. P.S.- & seriously, what the turnaround 4 NVIDIA @ CES: it’s gone from be`g the company Z`s go`g nowhere w/ Tegra to completely dominat`g the Android landscape w/ Tegra 2 , find`g its way into all sorts of cars , & upend`g the desktop processor space w/ Project Denver — all while pocket`g $1.5b of Intel’s cash. It’s`en about the year since A.C. Ryan Shrinky Dink’d its Playon!HD to make the Mini media player , & now another generation`s upon us. Samsung QX410 review

Just $799? Wait, really? Indeed, it’s quite hard to grasp Z the Samsung QX410 costs under $800, & when U hear about what U get 4 the money, you’ll understand exactly why. ExoPC`s Intel’s WiDi-enabled Atom tablet, V go hands-on w/ near-final build

We’re still not quite sure why Intel decided to forego mention`g the product name in this morning’s keynote, although (unless) Z Atom-based tablet w/ Wireless Display technology ? That’s the ExoPC , accord`g to the very people who make the device. V caught up w/ the company @ IDF 2010 & checked out both an older version of the device & the near-production model — still the super-glossy glass screen w/ admittedly bad view`g angles, although (unless) we’ve`en promised the final display`ll alleviates those problems. The unit V held`s also the good bit lighter than before — 144 grams to B exact, accord`g to the rep — &`d the rubber matte feel to the back. The ExoPC`s powered by Intel’s PineTrail — specifically the Atom N450 , although Oak Trail`s someth`g the company’s look`g into 4 the future. V won’t go into every detail of what V saw, as U can check out our preview from May 4 the more exhaustive (and still pretty accurate) look. The wait 4 the Boxee Box`s nearly over — pre-orders begin today — although (unless) before U drop the stack of change on D-Link’s half-sunk cube, know Z there’s no longer an NVIDIA Tegra 2 under Z tiny hood. @ the last minute, Boxee switched to the Intel Atom CE4100 , the same up-to-1.2GHz Sodaville chip power`g Google TV . That’s not all, as manufacturer D-Link told us our good friend Avner Ronen may not B able to keep his promise — though the company still expects the Box to hit the streets @ under $200 , we’re now look`g @ the $229 suggested retail price. What could possibly`ve happened to make these drastic changes? V visited Boxee in person to get an explanation, & you’ll find the surprisingly simple (yet NVIDIA-damning) answer right after the break. QNAP pops Intel’s 1.8GHz Atom D525 into refreshed Turbo NAS family

Can’t`ve your NAS be`g held back by the wimpy processor, eh? QNAP , the long-stand`g name in the networked storage biz, just announced the revision in its Turbo NAS lineup, plac`g Intel’s hot-off-the-fab-line Atom D525 into 4 Turbo NAS products. The 2-drive TS-259 Pro+, 4-drive TS-459 Pro+, 5-drive TS-559 Pro+ & 6-drive TS-659 Pro+ R all see`g the aforesaid 1.8GHz chip fall into place, enabl`g transfer speeds as high as 116MB/sec while maintain`g low power consumption. Outside of that, it looks as if these guys R the same as they ever were, boast`g compatibility w/ 2.5- & 3.5-inch hard drives, v3.3 of the QNAP NAS management software & support 4 more RAID variations than U can shake the decently sized stick at. Pric`g`s all hush-hush @ the moment, although (unless) we’re sure someone`ld talk dollars if U dial up the right dealer. When Intel released the details on its dual-core, mobile Atom N550 processor earlier this week ASUS`s 1 of the 1st to raise its hand w/ the netbook sport`g the new CPU. Well, now we’ve got the few more details on the forthcom`g Eee PC & unsurprisingly — as it`s com`g from ASUS — there appears to B the couple of different versions. The first`s the 1015PME, & accord`g to TechInStyle, the small lappie`ll B powered by the new 1.5GHz N550 CPU, support up to 2GB of DDR3 RAM, & B €349 ($440 US) when it hits the market. However, we’ve also heard from ASUS’s North American team of the 1015PN, which`ll add NVIDIA’s Ion 2 platform to the mix & B land`g stateside in September. Sounds like it could B 1 of the most powerful 10-inch netbooks to ever grace the planet, although (unless) unfortunately V don’t`ve the exact specs & pric`g on the latter 1 as of yet. Of course, as soon as V find out or C it hit Amazon we’ll B report`g back. Intel acquires TI’s cable modem unit, might B sneak`g into your AV rack

Intel’s`en try`g to break into the home entertainment market 4 years, & while it’s made some inroads, it’s also look`g @ the notable list of ho hum attempts Z never managed to gain traction. Take the CE3100 processor, 4 instance — the couple of years ago, the outfit seemed certain Z this here chip`ld B power`g every last liv`g room box 4 the rest of eternity, & nowadays it’s hardly the household name. although (unless) this week, Intel`s picked up Texas Instruments’ cable modem unit, which gives it the direct link into the very area it’s`en try`g to exploit. The goal of the acquisition — which`s scheduled to close in the fourth quarter of this year –`s to combine TI’s Puma product lines w/ DOCSIS & Intel SoCs. Once Z magical marriage takes place, Chipzilla intends to push out complex set-top boxes, residential gateways & modem products, possibly even go`g 4 the OEM artery. Dell Studio XPS 9100 arrives w/ six cores, little fanfare

AMD`d its turn in the high-end Dell desktop spotlight, although (unless) it’s time 4 another Intel beast, as the company’s quietly upgraded its tower lineup to support Intel’s consumer-grade champion chip, the 3.33GHz Core i7-980X . While the new Studio XPS 9100 looks just the same as its predecessor on the outside & sports the same basic options & ports, internally there’s the 525W power supply w/ enough juice 4 the Radeon HD 5970 2GB graphics card (a $580 option) & slots 4 up to 24GB of DDR3 memory. U won’t B gett`g any of this pixel-push`g goodness on the $950 base model, of course, which`s only the (respectable) quad-core 2.66GHz Core i7-920 & an Nvidia GeForce G310 512MB, although (unless) the machine looks like it could hold its own w/ low-end Alienware cousins if U get into $2,000+ territory. Call us crazy, although (unless) V think there’s the configurator session w/ your name on it.
