Chronic Dev Team unleashes greenpois0n, untethered jailbreak 4 4.2.1

It’s finally here, folks. The Chronic Dev Team`s put out the latest version of greenpois0n Z allows U to free your iDevice runn`g 4.2.1. What’s different about this jailbreak ? Glad U asked. This time ’round, the program`ll let U perform an untethered jailbreak — U can finally reboot the device without hav`g to re-jailbreak. B warned though — this build`s rushed out & V haven’t tested any devices on our end. @ the time of this writing, the software`s only available 4 Mac. Oh, & unlockers, don’t update to 4.2.1 if U plan on swapp`g sim cards in the future.

iPhone 5 & iPad 2`ll come w/ NFC built in, suggests well-connected analyst

You’ll no doubt B aware of our ( well justified ) distrust 4 anyth`g Z passes the tech analyst’s lips, although (unless) this time’s the little different. Richard Doherty of Envisioneer`g Group cites “engineers who R work`g on hardware” 4 Apple’s latest project in assert`g what Z project actually is: NFC capabilities R apparently be`g built into the next generation of iPhone & iPad devices. Contactless payments via NFC`ve`en steadily build`g up in hype & adoption recently — @ least in the western hemisphere, the stuff`s commonplace in Japan — & Doherty predicts Apple`ll make its move into the field w/ some new hardware & an accompany`g “revamp” of iTunes. The idea`ld B to allow the use of iTunes gift card balances & the credit card info Apple already`s from U to make swip`g payments @ compatible retail outlets. Apple`s said to B plann`g enticements, like loyalty credits & points, to get U us`g its service in the place of the competition, & there R already the couple of software patent applications from the company detail`g other potential uses 4 the technology. All of which could mean absolutely nothing, of course, although (unless) this seems like an awful lot of smoke 4 there not to B the fire under it. iPhone 5 & iPad 2`ll come w/ NFC built in, suggests well-connected analyst originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Jan 2011 02:25:00 EDT. iRig Mic: because your iPad, iPhone & iPod just aren’t complete sans the microphone

IK Multimedia, the same dudes & dudettes responsible 4 the downright hilarious iKlip , seem to B on somewhat of the hot streak. This week, the company’s hitt`g back w/ the iRig iMic, hailed as the 1st handheld condenser microphone 4 the iPhone. The image above truly explains it all — it’s designed to plug directly into your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, & so long as you’ve got the record`g app of choice, you’ll B captur`g your vocals in no time flat. The obvious next step`s to run everyth`g through the T-Pain app, although (unless) 4 those who’d rather roll more naturally, IK’s VocaLive effects processor`s tossed in gratis. Pric`g details R be`g kept under wraps 4 reasons unknown, although (unless) let’s B honest — you’re buy`g 1 even if it means los`g 2 arms & the leg. Spiderpodium Tablet stand`ll haunt your desktop on January 12th

Breffo chose CES to announce the big nasty friend 4 its exist`g Spiderpodium grip 4 handheld gadgets. Spiderpodium Tablet features eight flexible “secured & assured hold” notched legs designed to hold small- & medium-sized tablets includ`g the iPad which V assume fits into the latter category. Otherwise, it folds down compact 4 tot`g about in the jacket pocket or bag when not in use. It’ll B on sale start`g January 12th 4 an undisclosed price. Don’t worry though, we’ll grab the hands-on when the show opens & get back to U w/ the details. News Corp’s ‘The Daily’ pub to hit iPad in January?

V heard News Corp’s “iPad newspaper” The Daily`s on track 4 release in early 2011, although (unless) AllThingsD`s hear`g someth`g more specific — week of January 17th, in fact, w/ the caveat Z the launch plans`ve “moved around the couple of times in the past few months.” From what we’ve gathered previously , The Daily`ll B published daily (surprise, surprise) & cost 99 cents per week (about $4.25 per month) & might leverage the new App Store subscription payment system Z could B announced @ an Apple event. So… noth`g definitive, really. Got that? Good. News Corp’s ‘The Daily’ pub to hit iPad in January? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 21:02:00 EDT. Google Voice app now supports iPad & iPod touch, brings Click2Call

So, how exactly does the voice app work on devices without any cellular ties? Glad U asked! Google`s just updated the iOS Google Voice app to include support 4 the iPod touch & iPad, although (unless) neither of them can make cellular calls directly. Instead, U can use the app to initiate GVoice calls w/ the nearby phone. The process`s known as Click2Call — users simply click any ‘Call’ button within the app & then choose which of their phones they want to ring. It’s probably more time consum`g than just grabb`g your phone from the start, although (unless) hey, there it is. In other news, the app now disables text forward`g when U enable Push Notifications (to avoid double alerts), & there’s the new Do Not Disturb option in the Settings tab 4 those who’d prefer to disconnect. Hit the iTunes link below to get your download on, & let us know how things shake out in comments.

Apple job list`g calls 4 Verizon iPad engineer, hints @ the lot more

Do U “have enterprise sales experience & an exist`g knowledge of the mobile market & the technologies Z support it?” Do U “have strong IT knowledge in the areas of enterprise messag`g & collaboration, VPN, WiFi & enterprise security technologies?” & most importantly, do U “possess the ability to work without direct supervision or detailed direction?” If so, U might just B suitable 4 Apple’s latest & greatest job listing. The HR team in Cupertino`s apparently look`g 4 the Verizon iPad system engineer, primarily to work w/ Apple’s sales team & legions of Business partners in order to “drive the adoption of iPad in enterprise accounts.” What’s interest`g`s the Verizon angle; if Apple simply wanted nondescript iPads in Corporate America, why hire someone familiar w/ Big Red? Moreover, this certainly says someth`g about Apple’s relationship w/ Verizon — namely, Z it’s growing, & we’re guess`g Z the pleasantries`ll eventually extend far beyond the tablet. So yeah, it’s no real shocker Z Apple & Verizon R in cahoots on some level, although (unless) this kind of invitation usually comes w/ 1 or 2 undercover intentions. Infinity Blade takes the slice out of US iTunes store

New Zealanders`ve`en enjoy`g Epic Games’ visual stunner 4 the few hours now, as per usual, although (unless) the past`s caught up w/ the present, so to speak. Infinity Blade`s now available on the US iTunes store 4 both the iPad & the iPhone. Drop the gun, give the mutants the rest , & pick up the sword — cost of entry`s $5.99 & the file size`s the whopp`g 318.3MB. What R U wait`g for? Richard Branson’s ‘Project’ iPad magazine now hitt`g European iTunes stores

He just`d to beat Rupert Murdoch, didn’t he? Project , Richard Branson’s iPad magazine ,`s now available in the iTunes store — @ least in Italy & the United Kingdom, since it’s past midnight there. App`s free, cost per issue`s $2.99 4 “a full month’s worth of updat`g content.” V suspect it’ll hit US, too, the next few hours, although (unless) 4 now, those across the pond can read up on Jeff Bridges (audio & video interview), Earth 2.0, & the “well-informed Godzilla.” Take that, yet-to-be-released The Daily . Delta’s JFK terminal now home to 200 iPads, the few more entic`g eateries

America can’t say Z it wasn’t sniped by Malaysia Airlines when it comes to hav`g iPads in the airport , although (unless) we’ll take late over never any day of the week. New York’s JFK airport`s now home to 200 iPad tablets, all of which R located within Delta’s terminal. They’re be`g installed in cooperation w/ OTG Management, mostly in eateries — “Croque Madame, the French restaurant @ Gates 21 & 22 in Terminal 2; & Bar Brace, the casual Italian restaurant @ Gate 15 in Terminal 3.” As you’d expect, customers can order food from the iPad in order to`ve it delivered directly to them. It lacks Z certain Sonic Drive-In appeal, although (unless) the ability to also use the iPad to check your email,`ve the look @ the latest sports scores & attempt to jailbreak it 4 the next patron more than compensates. OTG doesn’t plan to put the time limit on the usage here (you’ll still need to make your connect`g flight, remember?), & its hop`g to engage in the similar installation over @ LaGuardia in due time. No word on whether these things`ll censor any & all Google searches on “uncomfortable TSA pat-downs,” though. id’s Carmack talks Rage HD, iPad’s power, & future iOS games

Rage HD 4 iOS`s the seriously gorgeous game — well worth the $2 , if U ask us. Now Z he can look up from his monitor, id Software’s technical wizard John Carmack`s mak`g the interview rounds — let’s C what V can glean,`ll we? On the subject of Rage itself, expect the 1st patch to add Game Center support as well as some bug fixes / minor tweaks to prettify the game further. & if U picked up the SD version, consider yourself among the more exclusive crowd: sales`ve`en majorly lop-sided in favor of HD. “If it’s Z big of the difference,” he told TUAW , “we probably won’t offer the low-end, standard def version in future games.” V already know Carmack’s thoughts on the iPhone vs. Nintendo DS / PSP, as they’ve`en echoed before once or twice , although (unless) here’s 1 new to us: “You`ldB able to do someth`g that’s better on an iPad than anyth`g that’s done on the Wii,” accord`g to the John Z spoke w/ Kotaku . That’s all purely theoretical, as it’s really up to the developer as to how much power it takes advantage of, & even w/ the tablet in question, “we’re nowhere close to max`g out what could B done on an iPad.” Oh, & Android? There’s work be`g done 4 the Little Green Platform as well, although (unless) via TUAW John, “there’s the lot of things w/ how the distribution platform works & the diversity of the platforms Z U`ve to target, where things R still much, much nicer on the iOS world.” As 4 id’s next foray in the “iOS world,” Joystiq learned Z the driv`g game based in the Rage universe`s in the cards, & perhaps someth`g inspired by Quake Arena: “maybe focus`g on the lightn`g gun, & call it ‘Lightn`g Arena’ or something, Z`ld B the full roam-around FPS game.” When asked about his resemblance to 1 Kevin Bacon, all reports indicate Carmack vanished behind the green-tinted smoke cloud of 1s & 0s, leav`g in his wake the three-foot tall statue of Commander Keen made from old shareware discs. id’s Carmack talks Rage HD, iPad’s power, & future iOS games originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 21:11:00 EDT. SlingPlayer Mobile 4 iPad gets the walkthrough, reminds of all the daytime TV we’re miss`g out on

V heard the iPad version of SlingPlayer Mobile`s com`g hot on the heels of SlingPlayer 4 Windows Phone 7 , & now we’ve got some video of the app in action. Accord`g to Mr. Video Narrator, the app`s video quality “better than any mobile app we’ve ever done,” thanks to Apple’s fancy H.264 Live Stream`g capabilities. The UI looks nicely responsive & unobtrusive, & the video does indeed look pretty great in the middle of the 360p YouTube video. It’s also clear Z the iPad`s really becom`g the TV-consumption powerhouse, between Hulu Plus, Netflix, ABC, etc., so SlingPlayer looks like the natural fit. How well it`ll perform when it’s out in the wild`s another matter, although (unless) V look forward to plunk`g down our $30 soon & find`g out 4 ourselves. Hello, trend. The Crux 360`s the 3rd such device Z we’ve seen in the past 2 months , & if we`d to guess, we’d say it probably won’t B the last. Z said, it’s easily the best look`g of the bunch, & it’s available to pre-order beginn`g today. 4 all intents & purposes, this case transforms your iPad into the netbook (at least, the netbook sans the bona fide operat`g system), although (unless) it’s also capable of flipp`g back in order to become the kickstand. the Bluetooth keyboard`s built right into the “lid,” & if you’re in need of little visual explanation, the video`s wait`g just after the break. $149 & she’s yours… someday. iPad go`g on sale in Verizon Wireless & AT&T stores October 28 (update: Verizon data pricing)

It might not B the Apple-Verizon tie-in U R most anxious to C happen, although (unless) the big red network`s gone official w/ its plans to offer the iPad in its brick-and-mortar stores start`g on October 28. VZW`ll B bundl`g the WiFi-only iPads w/ its own MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot w/ pric`g set @ $630, $730 & $830 4 the 16GB, 32GB & 64GB variants of Apple’s tablet, respectively. Full press releases follow after the break. As the publication notes, these R pretty nifty deals compared to Verizon’s usual data rates, although (unless) they’re only valid here: “Customers`ll only B eligible 4 the new bundle data plans when purchas`g the iPad & MiFi 2200 promotional bundle,” the FAQ reads. Apple develop`g iNewsstand to support iBooks?

This`ll supposedly B presented through the new storefront especially dedicated to periodical content, which could B launch`g as soon as the few months from now — though there`s also speculation Z Apple`ll sit on it until the launch of the next-gen iPad. iWiz dev does good, becomes Apple App Store director

To B perfectly honest, V can’t believe the above image`s runn`g on Engadget either. although (unless) w/ all the ongo`g hoopla surround`g the App Store approval process , we’d B remiss if V didn’t hep U to recently reported news Z Phillip Shoemaker, director of applications technology @ Apple, seems to`ve the healthy sideline develop`g iOS software w/ names like iWiz and, ahem , Animal Farts. We’ll let U hit the store yourself if U want to learn more about these fine products (search 4 his company, Gray Noodle). 4 Apple’s part, the company states Z the apps were submitted & approved before Shoemaker got the job — & that, indeed, he`s hired in part because of his experience as the developer. Now, if V could only get Z Pocket Pain Doctor guy the real job. He looks like he could use one! Update: V also thought we’d mention that, although Apple stated Z the apps were submitted & approved before dude got the job, Shoemaker Tweeted Z he`d his new employee orientation on March 9, 2009 — & Z Gray Noodle`s still publish`g apps the month later. California universities use iPads to report news, diagnose heart conditions; Penn State students R like, ‘what’s an iPad?’
