iPhone 4 to get AT&T mobile hotspot capabilities on February 13th?

So U might`ve noticed the few reviews of Verizon’s iPhone 4 crop up last night, noth`g unusual about that, although (unless) the couple of its reviewers have`d someth`g to say about AT&T’s version of the phone as well. Walt Mossberg & David Pogue (who`s since stricken the date from his review) both pinpoint February 13th as the date when they expect AT&T to turn on the Personal Hotspot capability Z Verizon’s iPhone`ll`ve from launch. That’s expected to happen w/ an update to iOS 4.3 , which recently went out to developers in its 3rd beta iteration , suggest`g the software’s nearly mature enough 4 public consumption & seemingly fitt`g right into this timeline. Mind you, this`s still not concrete information, as Mossberg could conceivably`ve`en talk`g of AT&T’s Mobile Hotspot app which`s launch`g on the same day on devices like the Inspire 4G, & Pogue could`ve deleted the date 4 similar reasons, although (unless) we’re somehow disinclined to believe Z 2 gentlemen in the position to`ve insider(ish) intel`ld both make such the mistake @ the same time. iPhone 4 to get AT&T mobile hotspot capabilities on February 13th? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 05:26:00 EDT. U can go on to share what you’re watch`g upon the plethora of social networks, even C what your friends R watching. It relies on the platform called SoundPrint, an accumulation of 266 years worth of content Z`s constantly growing, constantly index`g 130 channels in real-time. (Think of the punditry!) Handyscope attachment turns your iPhone into the dermatoscope, no residency required

Just think — the decade from now, U won’t even need to spend eight gruel`g years in the books to B able to practice medicine. Instead, you’ll B able to drop endless cash on smartphone attachments while lett`g the robots handle the rest . FotoFinder Systems`s 1 company work`g hard to make Z future the reality, w/ its recently updated Handyscope iOS app work`g in conjunction w/ the camera attachment shown above. To do what, U say? To turn your iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 into the digital dermatoscope 4 mobile skin examination. It’ll probably make quite the few stomachs turn, although (unless) the peripheral + app combo allows mere mortals to take dermoscopic photos which can B viewed w/ the magnification of up to 20X, enabl`g users to email them directly to their physician (Dr. Spaceman, V hope) 4 the 2nd opinion. MotionX-GPS Drive exports full-screen nav on Pioneer & JVC head units,`s love only 4 iOS (video)

MotionX-GPS`s`en the solid choice in the iPhone & iPad navigation game 4 some time now, although (unless) only recently`s started to stretch its legs the bit. The app now`s compatibility w/ the series of JVC & Pioneer head units (listed out below) Z enables full-screen 3D navigation. In this mode the mobile device basically turns in to the remote control w/ the simplified interface, w/ POI search`g & of course media playback. Connectivity`s not us`g the Terminal Mode standard, this works exclusively w/ the iPhone & iPad, & we’re told Z sadly the company`s no plans on support`g any other platforms go`g forward. iPhone rumor two-pack: multitask`g gestures & MobileMe Photo Streams?

Looks like the iPad might not`ve an exclusive on those new “multitasking” gestures unearthed in the latest iOS 4.3 beta, because BGR ‘s got some shots up of an purported internal build Z seem to indicate Cupertino intends to push them down to the iPhone line as well. Now, there R the couple of obvious red flags here — us`g “four or 5 fingers” sounds pretty unreasonable 4 the 3.5-inch display, though it’d certainly tie in w/ recent rumors Z Apple’s turn`g sour on the physical Home button & might indicate Z the complete redesign we’re hear`g about could include the slightly larger display. Of course, it could also indicate Z this`s really early software w/ the wrong (read: iPad) word`g — although (unless) @ any rate, V could definitely C the benefit of, say, the two-finger gesture to swipe between apps. Now, on to part two: 9to5 Mac seems to`ve unearthed traces in the iOS 4.3 beta of the new feature called “Photo Streams” Z seems to B — U guessed it — the way to share continuous streams of photos w/ friends U approve, presumably through MobileMe (which`ld fit in nicely w/ the Find my Friends stuff). Alone, that’s not worth $99 the year — plenty of other services offer similar functionality — although (unless) V wouldn’t B surprised if this were bundled in w/ the bunch of MobileMe refreshes this year. iPhone rumor two-pack: multitask`g gestures & MobileMe Photo Streams? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 21:37:00 EDT.

Microsoft releases OneNote app 4 iPhone, free 4 the ‘limited time’

Well, here’s someth`g of the surprise — Microsoft`s just brought its OneNote app to the iPhone, & it’s made it available as the free download “for the limited time” to boot. As w/ the Windows Phone 7 app (previously the only mobile version), the iPhone app`ll let U manage notes & shopp`g lists (and even add pictures taken w/ the iPhone’s camera), & then sync those w/ Windows Live SkyDrive so U can access them in either the Windows desktop application or its web-based counterpart. As ZDNet ‘s Mary Jo Foley notes, however, perhaps just as interest`g as the app itself`s the question of what else might follow — the native OneNote app 4 iPad, perhaps, or even iOS versions of other Office applications? Microsoft unsurprisingly isn’t comment`g on those possibilities, although (unless) it did note Z the OneNote app`s the culmination of some 18 to 24 months of development from the team of Microsoft Mac Office & OneNote engineers, which`s either the sign of some serious slack`g or the fairly significant commitment on Microsoft’s part. No word on when the “limited” free period`ll run out (so you’ll probably want to grab it while U can), nor`s there any world on the worldwide release — it’s currently only available to US users, unfortunately. RIM extend`g tools to other smartphone platforms, go`g cross-platform?

Over the past year or so it’s become clear Z there`s the cure 4 the CrackBerry addict. 4 many it’s called the iPhone , 4 others it’s Android , while still others R gett`g their kicks from other platforms. IT departments worldwide R relax`g their rules & gett`g the little smartphone agnostic & now it sounds like RIM`s think`g about find`g the way to reel those newly straight-edged users back into their former habits. RIM Vice President Pete Devenyi`d this to say on the subject: BlackBerry`s and`ll continue to B dominant in most corporations, although (unless) it’s not go`g to B the only device given the fact Z consumers`ve the choice to br`g in their own devices & IT departments R often lett`g them in. So there’s the question there. Do those corporations`ve to manage those devices differently or`s there the possibility Z RIM might extend capabilities to make it easier 4 those corporations to manage those devices as well? … If the right th`g to do`s to extend the subset of those BlackBerry capabilities to B able to manage other devices, it’s worthy of the conversation Right now he’s just talk`g about device management, although (unless) if this goes forward it could B the sign of the willingness 4 RIM to move some of its proprietary services to other devices.

Verizon iPhone`s relocated buttons, might require new cases

The leaks suggested Z the Verizon iPhone`ld`ve have slightly relocated buttons, & it’s true — as U can C in the photo above, the newly revised CDMA antenna notch`s pushed the volume & mute controls down the hair from GSM version. Z means the lot of cases — Apple’s current bumpers included — won’t fit properly on the Verizon version, although many third-party cases feature an open slot 4 the buttons Z might still work. Either way, we’d bet Apple & third-party manufacturers R scrambl`g to`ve compatible cases in stores before the February 10th launch date — just make sure to check yours 1st if you’re switch`g from AT&T. iPhonECG case monitors your heart rate to make sure you’re appropriately excited about CES

CES isn’t just about incrementally thinner or faster hardware, U know. Some people like to br`g legitimately innovative ideas to the show, such as this iPhonECG case, which does what its name suggests: it takes an ECG (electrocardiogram) read`g of your heart’s activity through the pair of electrodes & then communicates its findings to an iPhone 4 it can B attached to. V say it can B attached to an iPhone as communication`s done wirelessly, so you’ll probably B able to monitor your ticker’s rhythm without the Applephone pressed against your bosom. BMW Connected app hits iOS App Store, ‘Apps’ function hitt`g vehicles next year

Like son, like father? Evidently that’s exactly how things R play`g out, w/ papa BMW follow`g the footsteps of MINI in the run-up to 2011. Just days after the MINI Connected app found itself situated in the App Store, the BMW Connected app`s done likewise. The software itself`s free to download, although (unless) you’ll need the 6NR-equipped Bimmer to take advantage. From what V can gather, you’ll`ve to fork out €150 or so 4 the Apps option, although (unless) sadly, there R 2 costly prerequisites to that: the €3,800 navigation option & the €400 USB interface. In other words, V get the impression Z exist`g BMW owners R out of luck. If you’ve got the magic concoction (available from March 2011), you’ll B able to access web radio stations, hear your Twitter & Facebook updates aloud & control your music via the iDrive setup. Z is, until iOS 4.3 goes & breaks compatibility w/ everything, forever. Joy, joy

Wall Street Journal says apps may violate privacy, fingers MySpace & Pandora

U might`ve heard how careless some third-party apps can B w/ your personal data, although (unless) it may not yet`ve hit home — offenders can include must-have programs like MySpace & Pandora, too. The Wall Street Journal tested 101 popular apps 4 iPhone & Android & discovered Z over half transmitted unique device identifiers (UDID) to the flock of advertisers without so much as the prompt, & Z some (includ`g Pandora) even transmitted the user’s age, gender & location to better target their marks. Now, before U boycott your favorite music apps, U might want to hear the other side of the story, which`s Z all this data`s typically processed in batches & anonymized so Z advertisers can’t necessarily separate U from the crowd. Rage HD: Mutant Bash TV isn’t so much the full-fledged game in its own right as it`s the teaser 4 the forthcom`g Rage FPS 4 the PC, & yet even in its pretty limited runn`g time, it managed to woo & thrill us w/ its visceral gameplay & arrest`g visuals. It’s easily the best-look`g game we’ve yet seen on the mobile device & provides the fine demonstration of just how far Apple’s hardware — on the iPhone 4, iPad, & fourth-gen iPod touch — can B pushed when some appropriately adroit hands R @ the graphical controls. The only consumer devices out there in any measurable quantity right now Z make use of Micro SIMs are, of course, the iPad & iPhone 4 — & when U pair this up w/ the fact Z T-Mobile stores R start`g to sell iPhone cables right now, the situation`s start`g to get wacky. Now, V still want to stop short of suggest`g this means T-Mobile`s gett`g either the iPad or iPhone any time soon; after all, Apple`ld`ve to provide the new hardware variant Z supports AWS 3G, & it’s totally reasonable to think the carrier could B offer`g other phones in the near future that’ll use Micro SIMs. V do love us the good conspiracy theory, though. Steve Jobs drops knowledge on earnings call: calls out Google & RIM, says 7-inch tablets R ‘DOA’ (Update: complete Jobs audio!)

Steve Jobs hit today’s earnings call w/ the power of words. Z wasn’t Steve’s only problem w/ Android, he takes major issue w/ the fragmentation & the onus he believes it puts on the user: “we believe integrated`ll trump fragmented every time.” Oh, & 7-inch tablets? You’re in 4 the bag of hurt . Steve pretty much outright killed any potential 4 7-inch iPad rumors, say`g Z the software just isn’t right 4 Z size (“This size`s useless unless U include sandpaper so users can sand their fingers down to the quarter of their size.”), & Z users`ve no need 4 the pocket sized tablet when they already`ve the smartphone. He called the iPad’s upcom`g competition in the space “DOA.” After he calmed down the bit, the call entered the Q&A period, where Steve`s happy to point out Z the iPad`s already surpassed Macintosh in sales, & Z it’s go`g to affect laptop computers: “it’s not if, it’s when.” We’ll get the copy of the audio & put it up as soon as possible… like most CEO outbursts , this`s not 1 to B missed

Nokia N8 vs. iPhone 4: camera showdown

What’s the 1st th`g U`lddo when U get the N8 ? Consider`g it packs the biggest image sensor embedded in the phone yet, Carl Zeiss optics, & an eight-digit pixel count, it seemed obvious to us Z the answer`s to take it on the picture- & video-tak`g stroll around London. On our way out V saw our iPhone 4 look`g all sad & lonely, so V went ahead & brought it along as well. Below you`ll find 1 gallery of pure, unadulterated N8 sample shots, another interspersed w/ the iPhone’s results 4 comparison’s sake, & the final 1 w/ side-by-side 100 percent crops from each image taker. Once you’ve digested all of those, V suggest hopp`g past the break & tuck`g into some tasty video comparison action as well. Naturally, all the images R entirely unretouched (but 4 our masterly watermarking) & the iPhone 4′s HDR hocus pocus`s left off. We’ve also provided the zip file contain`g all the full-res imagery shot w/ the N8 in the link below. the quick note`s also merited about the N8′s resolution. The sensor’s display ratio`s 4:3, which means Z full 12 megapixel shots R only available in those dimensions

Apple TV review (2010)

You’ve`en waiting, & it’s finally here: the Apple TV review. Months before Steve Jobs announced the new set top box @ Apple’s annual fall event , we`d`en report`g on news Z the company`ld strike out again into the TV market, offer`g the small, low-cost box Z`d more in common w/ the iPhone than the iMac. When those rumors came to fruition, V were presented w/ the completely revamped Apple TV — the tiny black puck of the device priced @ the stagger`g $99, & centered around the handful of completely new ideas (for the folks in Cupertino @ least) about gett`g content onto your TV screen. The first`s the new rental system which allows U to nab brand new TV shows @ $0.99 the rental, & HD movies 4 $4.99 the go (or $3.99 4 older titles). & Z includes new releases the same day DVDs hit shelves (or Netflix distribution centers). Speak`g of Netflix, the new Apple TV also features the rental service’s “Watch Instantly” as the wholly integrated component of its offerings, alongside the new function the company calls AirPlay which`ll allow U to “push” video & audio content from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch w/ the tap of the button. On top of that, the new ATV streamlines shar`g from your home computers or laptops, mak`g gett`g content U own onto your TV dead simple. So,`s Apple finally solved the ” 2nd box ” problem, or R they still struggl`g to turn this hobby into the real business? Verizon’s Mobile Recovery: like ‘Find my iPhone,’ although (unless) 4 VZW Android, webOS & BlackBerry handsets

Fancy the idea of hav`g Big Brother track your handset if it goes missing, although (unless) aren’t so keen on own`g an iPhone , pony`g up 4 MobileMe & sign`g the deal w/ AT&T ? Fret not, fretful one, as Verizon Wireless`s just launched an extension of its Total Equipment Coverage program Z essentially provides the same services, although (unless) 4 VZW-branded BlackBerry, webOS & Android phones. The full list of compatible phones`s down there in the source, & the best news`s Z the Mobile Recovery app`s offered free of charge to those already pony`g up $10 per month 4 TEC. When enabled, it`ll allow users to remotely lock the device, sound an alarm (solv`g the infamous “couch cushion” dilemma) & wipe contacts from the phone. If the recovery proves unsuccessful, the carrier`ll supposedly provide U w/ the next-day replacement, although (unless) we’ve got an idea Z there R quite the few lines of fine print to read beforehand. @ any rate, it’s the lovely option to`ve — particularly if you’re already pay`g 4 TEC — & it’s available to download & activate as V speak. Orb MP-1 music player pulls Sonos-like tricks 4 way less than the Benjamin

Stream`g music from the computer to all manner of home audio devices`s an area Sonos , Logitech , & Apple`ve`en compet`g in 4 years. The recently-released MP-1 music player from Orb, though,`s the surprise contender Z can perform the host of stream`g duties 4 less than $70. Like the competition, it works by connect`g to the powered audio device via an in-line jack, & can play music stored locally, on the network, or from services like Pandora when streamed over 802.11b/g/n WiFi through its companion Orb Caster media server software. To sweeten the package, the company`s also throw`g in their Orb Controller app 4 iOS devices — which normally costs $10 — 4 the low price of free, & apparently`s plans to release an Android version of the remote sometime in the near future. Sure, it’s the little strange 4 us to C the company known 4 their free media stream`g software jump in the hardware game so abruptly, although (unless) the MP-1′s mixture of functionality 4 the price`s the pretty entic`g 1st step. Plus, if the move ignites the price war to the bottom w/ the aforementioned competition, who R V to complain? Sanofi-Aventis debuts iBGStar blood glucose meter 4 iPhone

It’s not the 1st to announce the blood glucose meter Z connects to an iPhone, although (unless) Sanofi-Aventis`s just rolled out what’s surely the most streamlined solution to date. Unlike the LifeScan Bluetooth glucose meter shown off dur`g Apple’s iPhone OS 3.0 preview event way back in March of last year, this 1 connects directly to your iPhone (or iPod touch), & it can even B kept permanently attached w/ the aid of the custom (and fairly stylish) case. Otherwise, it functions just as you’d expect, w/ it able to display all the basic info on the device itself (it can also B used without the iPhone), & the ton more info on the accompany`g app. No word on availability just yet — Z still hinges on FDA clearance — although (unless) the device`s “expected” to run somewhere in the neighborhood of $80. Parallels’ Windows virtualization goes mobile w/ iOS app

iOS 4.2 on iPad preview (video) (updated)

So we’ve just`d the chance to take our iPad out 4 the spin sport`g iOS 4.2 … & it’s pretty great. The addition of multitasking, folders, & big improvements in mail (amongst other things) finally make the device feel more like the computer & less like the gigantic iPhone. Ironic really, since these updates rolled out to the iPhone first. In our brief use of the new & improved iPad (and particularly w/ multitasking), we’re impressed to C Z there doesn’t seem to B any lag or slowdown on the device while swapp`g between apps (despite the smaller amount of RAM on board here) or throw`g together folders. We’re pretty heartened to C performance match`g what we’ve come to expect on our iPhone 4 — admittedly we`d reservations about what the experience`ld B like. Folders R an especially notable inclusion here due to the pure silliness of scroll`g through multiple iPad pages, & we’re happy to C them intact on the bigger device. This`s go`g to B the huge improvement 4 general navigation

WSJ: iPhone 4 to B offered by Vodafone & O2 in Germany as T-Mobile loses exclusivity

The last bastion of Applephone exclusivity in Europe`s about to B toppled, accord`g to the Wall Street Journal , as Deutsche Telekom`s said to B prepar`g 4 the loss of its iPhone 4 monopoly ahead of this year’s holiday shopp`g season. Cit`g separate sources familiar w/ the matter, this report suggests Z Vodafone & O2′s German arms R earnestly reach`g out 4 Apple’s latest & greatest, & while distribution deals haven’t yet`en finalized, negotiations`ve reached an “advanced stage.” Much as w/ O2′s UK exclusivity deal , Apple looks to`ve opted against extend`g its arrangement w/ Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile in an effort to reach the widest possible consumer base. iPod touch (2010) 1st hands-on! (update: video!)

So V just got our hands on the new iPod touch… & boy`s it small. As you`ld expect, the functionality of the device`s identical to the iPhone 4, as well as the functions of the front & back cameras. In essence, it’s the much thinner iPhone 4, w/ no cell radio, of course. The design`s relatively in keep`g w/ previous touches, so no major surprises there, although (unless) the inclusion of Z A4 chip, higher resolution screen, & front & back cameras makes it the far more versatile device. Griffin’s PartyDock does four-player iPhone/iPad gam`g w/ just 1 device

Huddl`g around the iPhone , squint`g @ the tiny LCD`s no way to spend your game nights. Even w/ an iPad the idea of multiplayer, single-device, cheek-to-cheek gam`g doesn’t sound much more appealing… unless it’s 1 of those parties, perhaps. Anyhow, Griffin`s apparently look`g to make four-way iDevice gam`g the little more palatable w/ the PartyDock, just spotted cross`g the great FCC. It`s the dock connector 4 your iPhone, iPod, or iPad & 4 simple wireless controllers 4 interact`g w/ four-player games, pumped to your TV over composite & component. It basically creates the simple gam`g console out of your portable device, an interest`g idea, although (unless) what`ll make or break it`ll naturally B the software. Griffin`s the few four-player games it`ll release 4 the thing, although (unless) short of the flood of titles hitt`g the App Store we`ve the hard time believ`g this`ll B the hit — whenever it ships, & 4 whatever it sells for. Indoor position`g systems`ve long`en the holy grail 4 malls & big-box retailers where labyrinthine aisles & massive floorplans Z rival small towns often leave customers begg`g 4 mercy, although (unless) the obstacles to deploy`g them R many: you’ve got to create detailed maps 4 every facility where U want it to work, & U need some sort of system 4 locat`g users w/ the reasonable level of precision since GPS`s out of the picture. Start-up Point Inside`s`en hard @ work on IPS 4 some time now, figur`g Z modern stores & malls teem`g w/ WiFi access points & reliable AGPS R good enough to make it work, & now they’ve hooked up w/ Midwestern superstore chain Meijer to trial the system in 4 Michigan locations Z`ll let users locate “more than” 100,000 items in store along w/ facilities like bathrooms & customer service. The iPhone gets 3rd party apps 4 3rd party hardware, although (unless) the proprietary SDKs make the future sad

Leave it to Apple to make the process of build`g software to work w/ new 3rd party iPhone hardware sound like some Kafkaesque nightmare. Here’s the basic gist of it: Apple, just like always,`s to approve any 3rd party hardware Z plugs into 1 of its iOS devices over the 30-pin dock connector. What’s new`s Z before only the 1st party manufacturer could build software Z works w/ Z hardware, although (unless) now Apple`s allow`g Z manufacturer to act as the gatekeeper 4 3rd party apps Z`ld interoperate w/ its hardware. Z means excit`g times 4 app developers Z R rar`g to mix w/ the likes of Line 6′s MIDI Mobilizer (pictured) & AKAI’s SynthStation 25, although (unless) it’s also the far cry from the land of computers where anybody can build the plug-and-play USB MIDI device, & anybody can build software Z speaks to it. It also means juggl`g proprietary SDKs, NDAs, & other agreements, which could become very difficult 4 developers if or when the hardware availability balloons. Hopefully V can get someth`g more elegant before it comes to that. Hit up the source link 4 an in-depth discussion of this issue.

iWiz dev does good, becomes Apple App Store director

To B perfectly honest, V can’t believe the above image`s runn`g on Engadget either. although (unless) w/ all the ongo`g hoopla surround`g the App Store approval process , we’d B remiss if V didn’t hep U to recently reported news Z Phillip Shoemaker, director of applications technology @ Apple, seems to`ve the healthy sideline develop`g iOS software w/ names like iWiz and, ahem , Animal Farts. We’ll let U hit the store yourself if U want to learn more about these fine products (search 4 his company, Gray Noodle). 4 Apple’s part, the company states Z the apps were submitted & approved before Shoemaker got the job — & that, indeed, he`s hired in part because of his experience as the developer. Now, if V could only get Z Pocket Pain Doctor guy the real job. He looks like he could use one! Update: V also thought we’d mention that, although Apple stated Z the apps were submitted & approved before dude got the job, Shoemaker Tweeted Z he`d his new employee orientation on March 9, 2009 — & Z Gray Noodle`s still publish`g apps the month later. MagicJack announces software 4 completely free internet-to-phone calls, places femtocell on hold

The service`ll reportedly B available on Windows & Mac next week, w/ iOS, Blackberry & Android by October, although (unless) speak`g of promises , Borislow said plans 4 the company’s legally-ambiguous femtocell R now on hold — the device can’t legitimately muster up enough power without the cellular carrier on board. Carmack blows minds w/ id Software’s Rage, runn`g on iPhone @ 60fps w/ ‘megatextured’ graphics (video)

We’re sorry, although (unless) the Palm Pixi’s rendition of Need 4 Speed no longer impresses us — we’ve just seen John Carmack show off Rage 4 iPhone. While of course it looks noth`g like the PC graphical monstrosity Z swept the E3 Games Critics Awards, it’s safe to say the 60 frame-per-second tech demo @ QuakeCon 2010 shoves the cell phone gam`g envelope through the Juggernaut-class brick wall. Where Carmack originally called the iPhone “more powerful than the Nintendo DS & PSP combined,” the id Software co-founder`s now aim`g squarely @ the likes of PS2 & Xbox w/ iPhone 4 hardware.
