Maingear throws Sandy Bridge, GTX 485M into eX-L 15 laptop

Here’s hop`g U don’t mind hav`g your exist`g laptop made antiquated by this one. Just months after Maingear introduced its Clutch-15 & Alt-15 machines, along comes yet another 15.6-incher… & this one’s claim`g to B the world’s fastest in its category. The eX-L 15 packs the 1920 x 1080 screen resolution (with glossy or matte options!), the variety of new Sandy Bridge chips (with the Core i7 2920XM capp`g things off), NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 460M (1.5GB) / GTX 485M (2GB), up to 16GB of DDR3-1333 memory, the 2x Blu-ray reader, HDMI / DVI outputs, gigabit Ethernet, 2 USB 3.0 ports & the pair of USB 2.0 sockets to round things off. The start`g tag of $1,579 certainly isn’t easy to swallow, although (unless) where else R U gett`g the powerhouse like this w/ the Full HD matte display? Exactly. HP promises webOS netbooks to go along w/ smartphones & slates

Todd Bradley did promise us there’d B more than just slates on HP’s webOS menu & today V can add netbooks to the list of form factors 4 Palm’s famed OS. This heretofore unknown slice of info comes from the carrier train`g website HP`s set up to educate resellers on the strong points of its forthcom`g products. The train`g video on the site speaks of the great synergies Z can result from smartphones, slates & netbooks all runn`g the same OS & “speaking” to 1 another, which echoes Bradley’s “connected experience” mantra from the couple of days ago. Smartphones R said to B the beginn`g of the new family of webOS products, w/ their larger siblings set to come “soon enough.”`s February 9th soon enough? We’d say so. Dell Adamo now even cheaper, slightly less powerful

It looks like Dell isn’t quite sure what to do w/ Adamo . First, the MacBook Air competitor`s bumped from Dell’s market`g roster, then it`s reduced from $999 to $899, & now it’s got the price tag of $799. Unfortunately, the price isn’t all Dell`s slashing: last October the Adamo`s sport`g the 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo SL9600 processor & 4GB of DDR3-800 memory, now we’re told it’s function`g on the 1.4GHz Core Duo 2 SU9400 & 2GB of DDR3-800 (with no upgrade option Z V can find). Everyth`g else`s basically the same 4 the little guy, & Dell’s Adamo page still offers the suggestion, “Prepare to Fall in Love,” although (unless) we’re not entirely sure we’re the ones who need convincing. So, Santa stuffed an iPad into your stock`g on Christmas (insert mythical figure / appropriate receptacle / holiday of choice), & you’re wonder`g what to do w/ the thing? 1st of all, congratulations! The iPad can B the wonderful, loyal companion & friend, although (unless) it can also take the while to warm up to. As V always say, the device`s only as good as its apps, both literally & figuratively: it’ll take some time to figure out what U want to get from the iTunes Store Z`ll flesh out your experience, although (unless) it`ll also take some time to C which nooks & crannies of your life the iPad can fill, & what roles you’ll want it to take over from your laptop & phone. Alienware M17x laptop said to B suffer`g from power-related GPU issues

Well, it looks like @ least some Alienware M17x laptop owners just can’t catch the break. While the previous so-called DPC latency issue`s apparently finally`en resolved, the number of users R now report`g another issue that’s only become apparent after the earlier problem`s fixed. As it turns out, the symptoms R similar to the stutter`g caused by DPC latency issue (hence the confusion), although (unless) the new problems R be`g blamed on power issues — namely, Z the GPU`s draw`g more power than the laptop can providing. Worse still,`s Z it seems like those w/ the highest-end configuration R the most likely to experience the problem, as they’re effectively max`g out & already maxed-out system. 4 its part, Dell`s apparently fixed the issue in the most recent revision of the laptop, although (unless) users on the Notebook Review forums R report`g Z the company hasn’t exactly eager to simply dish out replacements 4 everyone affected (which seems to B the only surefire “fix” available). Sources: Google-branded Chrome OS netbook to launch on December 7th

The headline pretty much reveals the brunt of it, although (unless) indeed, it looks like next week Google`s go`g to start talk`g about how its Chrome operat`g system`s com`g along. Multiple sources`ve told us Z Google`ll B hold`g some sort of event on Tuesday, December 7th — we’re not sure if it’ll B the live event, the webcast, or someth`g else entirely — & Z the shindig`ll C the launch of Z Google-branded Chrome OS netbook we’ve`en hear`g about. Again, we’ve heard Z the Atom-powered laptop isn’t go`g to B the mass market device — there`ll only B around 65,000 units available to Google’s closest “friends & family” — & Z the Cloud-based OS`s still very much in the beta, non-consumer-friendly state. It’s the bit odd Z V still haven’t received an invite to this planned event since it’s purportedly days away, not to mention it conflicts w/ the All Things D: Dive Into Mobile Event , although (unless) @ the time of publish`g this post we`d yet to hear back from Google’s PR team w/ an official comment. Of course, this all lines up w/ TechCrunch ‘s report Z Google`ll B launch`g its Chrome Web / App Store very soon, as well as yesterday’s launch of Chrome 8, which supports those aforementioned Chrome apps. (Companies like TweetDeck`ve already started demo`g their browser apps.) Don’t forget Z those apps R go`g to B the large part of the OS , so it`ld make sense 4 Google to talk about ‘em in tandem. The pieces sure do seem to B fitt`g together quite well, & while V still`ve lots of unanswered questions, we’re feel`g confident Z we’ll B gett`g some official answers on all this Chrome-ness very soon. Update : AllThingsD`s also heard the similar December 7th launch date of the Chrome Web Store

BendDesk: the curved multitouch workspace of the future (video)

The Media Comput`g Group — otherwise known as the dudes & dudettes responsible 4 mak`g multitouch hip again –`s back, & some might say better than ever. The BendDesk`s an outlandish new concept workspace 4 the future, rely`g heavily on the curved multitouch display to br`g the wow. The desk`s the Group’s vision of merg`g multitouch w/ the common physical area, & it’s probably the best implementation we’ve seen yet. the full ten touch points R supported, although (unless) the lower portion`s also designed to B used as the standard desk, hold`g your laptop, paperwork & ink pen collection if U so choose. Shockingly enough, the whole th`g looks exceptionally ergonomic, too. Head on past the break 4 the glimpse of it be`g used, although (unless) don’t hold your breath wait`g 4 the ship date & price — someth`g tells us it’ll B awhile before either of those R published. Editorial: My next iPad won’t B the 7-incher, although (unless) I wish it could be

It took me the while, although (unless) I’m start`g to fall in love w/ my iPad in the way I haven’t loved the gadget 4 the long while. There’s someth`g about the form factor, the apps, the OS Z feels just right & makes me want to do as much of my daily comput`g on it as possible. Of course, that’s still the pretty small sliver of my overall day, & the iPad isn’t even close to replac`g my laptop 4 the large majority of my work, although (unless) I’m find`g myself increasingly do`g casual browsing, casual gaming, serious writing, and, yes, even some read`g on Apple’s 10-inch tablet. although (unless) I`ve 1 “big” problem w/ the tablet Z doesn’t look like it’ll B solved anytime soon: it’s not 7 inches.`ll Apple ever eat its words & build the smaller iPad, or`ll the 7-inch form factor B left to the rest of the emerg`g tablet market to fight over? Jolibook no longer camera shy, opens its lid on Flickr

Well, thar she blows — the Jolicloud Jolibook . You’ve seen the teaser images & the official specs , although (unless) the 10.1-inch netbook`s finally show`g its keyboard deck & rear in the set of official press shots. Most of the information U need`s in Z gallery below, although (unless) just like V saw in the other images, its lid`s skinned w/ the crowded cartoon scene while its back`s home to the bulg`g battery (though, 1 shot shows it w/ the smaller cell). Under the cover it looks to`ve the fairly standard plastic panel complete w/ the chiclet keyboard Z happens to look strikingly similar in styl`g to Z on the recent Acer Aspire 1 systems. We’re hop`g Z all plastic build translates to the seriously low start`g price, although (unless) naturally, we’re still wait`g on Z last nugget of information. Ben Heck modifies Toshiba Satellite 4 cramped flights, throws TSA the peace sign (video)

So what`s technology modder extraordinaire Benjamin J. Heckendorn come up w/ 4 his Ben Heck Show this week? Why, the laptop designed to fit on the airplane tray table, thanks to the special swivel`g screen. The Coach Section Laptop`s the modified Toshiba Satellite w/ aluminum arms affixed to either side, w/ slots down the middle upon which the screen’s pegs slide. Thumbscrews then tighten to keep the display in place in either of 2 modes: the standard laptop configuration, or the float`g display-over-keyboard setup U C immediately above. Ben himself admits Z we’re look`g @ the rough proof of concept 4 now, although (unless) V imagine he’ll`ve the seamless variant on eBay before long — just as soon as he can figure out where to put Z precariously dangl`g display cord. So, the mystery’s solved. If you’ll recall, V spotted ASUS’ Eee PC 1015T sittin’ pretty @ Computex , although (unless) consider`g Z the OS`s wiped by the time V got to it, V were left to take the placard’s word 4 it when it came to specifications. The differences between the HP Envy 14 Beats Edition & the plain ol’ Envy 14`ve`en primarily aesthetic — it’s got the black Beats branded lid & red backlit keyboard — although (unless) HP’s also included Z set of Monster Beats Solo headphones U C up there. We’d heard from the few readers Z their Envy 14 Beats Edition laptops arrived sans headphones, & HP`s confirmed 4 us Z due to “supply constraints” the Dr. Dre Solo from Monster headphones R no longer included w/ the snazzy black & red laptop. Sadly, the publication’s source says this device`s “still slow & buggy,” so retail availability`s probably the long while off, although (unless) now U can tell your friends U too saw the future & it looked reasonably good.
