Google responds: B`g recycles search results, & we’d like it to stop

Google accused Microsoft of copy`g search results this morning, & the company’s stick`g to its guns: in response to Microsoft’s firm denial — “We do not copy Google’s results” — it’s released another tiny batch of evidence to the contrary & the call 4 Microsoft to discontinue the practice 4 good. Mind you, Google search engineer Amit Singhal doesn’t explicitly call out its competitor 4 “copying” results — rather, “recycling” them through the clever combination of Microsoft Internet Explorer & the B`g Toolbar — although (unless) the message`s clear. CE Oh no he didn’t!: Netgear boss calls ‘game over’ 4 Microsoft, Jobs’ ‘ego’ reason iPhone doesn’t support Flash

Can’t say Z Patrick Lo`s the name Z immediately rang any bells around here. He’s certainly not as recognizable as Netgear, the company Z he chairs & rules supreme. although (unless) boy did he hit our radar screens this morning. Lo`d plenty of criticism to spread around the Microsoft & Apple camps today dur`g the press lunch in Sydney. Oh where to even begin? Let’s start w/ Microsoft, & Lo’s claim that, “Microsoft`s over — game over, from my point of view,” when compar`g Windows Phone 7′s chance to compete w/ Android & the iPhone. Switched On: Mak`g the call on Windows Phone 7

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On , the column about consumer technology. CES 2011 saw the debut of what could B the biggest challenge to the Wintel dominance of personal comput`g since Windows 95 cemented its position. The combination of the Android operat`g system on ARM processors — ARMdroid if you`ll — grabbed most of the attention in the emerg`g tablet category on products such as devices such as the Motorola Xoom & LG G-Slate . although (unless) it`s also clear Z manufacturers — unconstrained by Cupertinian notions of what operat`g system`s best suited to what kind of device — R will`g to take the combination in new directions Z come much closer to the notebook form factor. the clear example of this`s the ASUS Eee Pad Slider . If hav`g the tablet thunder stolen from Microsoft wasn’t enough to make the company uncomfortable, clearly encroach`g designs like this were. & so, @ Steve Ballmer’s keynote, the company announced Z the next version of Windows`ll support not only x86 offerings from Intel & AMD – themselves mov`g closer to ARM-like system-on-chips – although (unless) ARM designs from companies such as Qualcomm & NVIDIA as well. Microsoft noted Z the new chip support`s requested by its partners, imply`g Z PC companies want to take advantage of the long battery life & thin form factors enabled by ARM architectures, although (unless) also br`g along Windows’ broad driver & software support. WP7 update w/ faster app load times, copy & paste`s real; release date remains nebulous

As`s`en discussed before , Windows Phone 7`s set to release the major update later this year, although (unless) it appears Z the boys in Redmond may finally B ready to send out an OS refresh Z`ll substantially improve the exist`g WP7 user experience. 1st & foremost, copy & paste`s included, which given how long we’ve`en wait`g 4 Z functionality,`ld B more than enough to appease the majority. Microsoft’s 1st Windows Phone 7 update com`g this month?

It’s no secret Z Microsoft`s anxious to get copy / paste functionality rolled out to Windows Phone 7 users on the double. In his CES keynote last night, Steve Ballmer himself said Z it’d B com`g soon — although (unless) the little hint on Microsoft’s site indicates Z it might B com`g as soon as this month: the URL Microsoft`s us`g 4 the update’s details page includes “january-update.aspx” in it, which we’d say`s pretty telling. Of course, launch dates inevitably slip, & perennial Microsoft guru Paul Thurrott thinks it’s track`g 4 early February before it’ll actually reach users’ devices… so V wouldn’t go cancel`g vacations you’ve got scheduled this month just so U can B around to score the update as soon as it’s available. NES emulator lands on Windows Phone 7, barred from the Marketplace

Windows Phone 7′s Marketplace grows faster than Android did @ launch, doesn’t mean much

An analyst note released by research firm IDC yesterday points out Z in the nearly 2 months since Windows Phone 7′s retail release, the Windows Marketplace`s swelled to 4,000 applications — the number Z the Android Market took 5 months to reach. That’s impressive, no doubt, & the analyst behind the numbers notes Z he “would not B surprised if Microsoft`d the 3rd largest app portfolio in the industry by the middle of next year.” Now granted, hitt`g number three`ld take very little effort on Microsoft’s part — they’d just`ve to beat webOS, BlackBerry OS, & Symbian, none of which`ve sparked iOS- or Android-like levels of developer interest. ComScore: Android keeps chugging, BlackBerry falters, world awaits Windows Phone 7′s numbers

Compared to last month’s report , it’s more or less Business as usual in ComScore’s latest smartphone market share numbers 4 the three-month period end`g in October, although (unless) there R the few interest`g points worth call`g out. Most notably, RIM’s decline seems to`ve accelerated — they’ve lost the claimed 3.5 percent of the US market in the latest period compared to 2.8 percent prior, which means they’re now down to 35.8 percent. Of course, that’s still more than enough to keep them comfortably in 1st place, although (unless) it’s the situation they’re go`g to want to reverse sooner or later — hopefully w/ TAT’s help . Meanwhile, Apple’s tacked on the slightly larger slice of the pie, although (unless) they’re still hold`g fairly steady; Google, meanwhile, continues its stratospheric rise, tack`g on another 2.1 percent since last month’s numbers to hit 23.5 percent — nipp`g on Apple’s heels, we’d say. The most intrigu`g story, though,`ld`ve to B Microsoft: they’re lower than before @ just 9.7 percent of the market, although (unless) these figures don’t include Windows Phone 7 yet — & clearly, no one’s buy`g WinMo 6.5 gear @ this point.`ldstart to get interest`g in the next month or 2 on Z front. Not bad 4 an add-on peripheral, & Sony itself says it sees the Move as more of the word-of-mouth grower, although (unless) we’ll C how much momentum Kinect gets out of the gate: Microsoft certainly plans on push`g it . Microsoft announces Windows Phone 7 sync software 4 Macs due this year

Even though V kind of saw this com`g , it’s still nice to hear. Microsoft`s gone & done the (nearly) unthinkable, announc`g this even`g plans 4 the Mac compatible sync client 4 its soon-to-be-launched Windows Phone 7 devices. Accord`g to the statement from the company issued late in the day, beginn`g some time “later in 2010″ Mac users`ll B able to live the dream along w/ their PC counterparts by download`g the beta OS X application which`ll allow U to sync “select content” from the Mac of their choos`g to the Windows Phone. The company`s short on details, although (unless) hopefully V can pry more info out the big M in the com`g days. 4 now, V can all bask in the shock`g open-mindedness of this news, & give the folks in Redmond the golf clap 4 finally acknowledg`g Z yes, some Mac owners may actually want to get in on the Windows Phone party. As 4 Hell, there haven’t`en any reports of recent temperature changes, although (unless) we’ll keep U posted as V get more information. 4 your perusal, the full statement: Later in 2010 Microsoft`ll make the public beta available of the tool Z allows Windows Phone 7 to sync select content w/ Mac computers. HTC loves Android & Windows Phone 7 equally

HTC’s relationship w/ Microsoft`s the stuff of daytime television. It`s HTC’s commitment to build`g high quality QWERTY handsets 4 Windows Mobile Z 1st gave the young Taiwanese company the spotlight. HTC then shifted its allegiance to Android just as the green monster`s on the rise (and WinMo in decline). So where R V today? Well, of the ten Windows Phone 7 handsets announced yesterday, half were from HTC. If Z doesn’t signal HTC’s commitment to Redmond then maybe the quote will. Speak`g @ the press conference in Taipei yesterday, HTC CEO Peter Chou said, “Right now we`ve Windows Phone 7 & Android, & focus the same on each, although (unless) let the market decide.” Peter then promised more WP7 handsets in 2011 without gett`g into specifics. So let’s check in next year & C how things go,`ll we? HTC loves Android & Windows Phone 7 equally originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 07:02:00 EDT.

Samsung X430 headed 4 Microsoft Stores w/ the crapware-free copy of Windows

V just got the quick look @ the previously Korea-bound Samsung X430 laptop Z Microsoft`s tapped as the “Microsoft Store Exclusive.” It’s pretty good hardware, both inside & outside, 4 the price. Also, due to its Store-exclusive nature, Microsoft also put the promised “Microsoft Signature Image” on here, which means the copy of Windows 7 completely free of crapware & trialware, though Microsoft`s put the good quantity of 1st party software Z you’ll probably want like Windows Live, B`g Maps 3D, & Microsoft Security Essentials. If U ask yourself “how`ld Steve Ballmer use this computer,” the Signature Image`s pretty much the answer. 4 $1,099 U get the Core i3 ULV processor, GeForce 310M graphics, the 500GB HDD, & the 14-inch WXGA screen. Our favorite part`s probably just the premium feel of this device, & its no-nonsense look, @ least when it’s open & you’re actually us`g it — Z faux carbon fiber lid on the outside`s the little loud. Windows Phone 7 ads reveal Samsung Focus 4 AT&T, November 8th date & shiny new website

We’d heard November 8th`s AT&T’s Windows Phone 7 launch date, although (unless) this makes it real — Microsoft advertisements on Microsoft’s page, point`g to the brand-new Windows Phone website. & unless we’re completely mistaken, the Samsung Cetus finally`s the name — it’ll B called the Focus when it comes to AT&T on the specified date. We’re not see`g any other spilled beans @ Microsoft’s new launch page, although (unless) we’re digg`g the upbeat tune — let us know if U find anyth`g intrigu`g buried in the Silverlight source code on Z “new phones” page,`ll you? Steve Ballmer & AT&T’s Ralph de la Vega to headline Windows Phone 7 launch event in NYC on October 11 — we’ll B there live!

Horror, shock, surprise! Microsoft CEO & prime fanboy of all things Windows & developer-related, Steve Ballmer,`ll B the keynote speaker @ Microsoft’s New York launch event 4 Windows Phone 7 . He’ll B joined on stage by AT&T’s Ralph de la Vega & when the pep rally`s over, we’re promised opportunities to finally handle the official incarnations of retail Windows Phones 4 ourselves. V know all this because Microsoft`s just dropped the kind little invite into our inbox urg`g us to attend its October 11 get-together. V will, of course, B there live, although (unless) don’t forget Microsoft’s also hold`g the London event on Z day, ostensibly 4 the same reason, so make sure to B up nice & early next Monday if U don’t wanna miss the thing. Keepin’ it real fake: the Haina X5-01 KIRFs the Kin One

Microsoft’s Kin moved so quickly from curiosity to cadaver Z we’ve almost managed to forget about the th`g already, although (unless) 1 group`ll always remember: the KIRFers . This model`s called the Haina X5-01 & it’s someth`g of an ode to Microsoft’s less than dearly departed Kin 1 handset, the direct copy of the hardware V actually found to B somewhat derivative itself . This model, however, merrily leaps right over the line between imitation & clone, even steal`g 1 of Microsoft’s sample images of the UI . Thanks to Z V don’t actually`ve any real screenshots of what OS the th`g`s running, although (unless) someth`g tells us Z whatever ROM it’s rock`g it won’t B nearly as adept @ keep`g up w/ our chaotic lives . Netduino Plus earns U Ethernet & microSD, an approv`g nod from Microsoft

The 2 new Arduinos`ldspell good things 4 the Arduino heads out there, although (unless) meanwhile, on the other side of the tracks … Secret Labs`s launch`g its .NET-friendly Netduino Plus, which adds Ethernet & microSD to the regular Netduino board (which in itself`s the sort of high powered, Visual Studio-compatible Arduino, w/ the 32-bit 48MHz ARM7 processor, instead of Arduino’s 8-bit number, although (unless) pin compatible w/ Arduino “shields”). Unfortunately, the network`g code eats of the good majority of the board’s already meager code storage & RAM, although (unless) U can always flash the original Netduino’s firmware on here if you’d like. Right now the board`s in the “public beta” while the firmware gets some extra tweaks, although (unless) U`ldB able to drop $60 on the final model by the holidays. Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 actually doesn’t support tethering

We’re not exactly sure how this message got so confused, although (unless) Microsoft’s come out today to let us know Z Windows Phone 7 officially doesn’t support tether`g @ all, despite earlier comments by Brandon Watson Z it’d B the network operator call on whether to enable it . If we`d to guess, this`s probably the feature Z`s “on the bubble” as Microsoft moved toward RTM, & it simply didn’t make the cut 4 version 1.0 — we’d definitely expect to C it in the future release, though there’s no guidance from Microsoft @ the moment on whether (or when) that’ll happen. Kinect sales`ll ‘Blow away’ those of the iPad — @ least that’s what Microsoft’s Kudo Tsunoda thinks

Microsoft Game Studios manager Kudo Tsunoda`s usually known 4 his controversial choice of eyeware, although (unless) now it’s what he’s say`g rather than wear`g Z`s mix`g things up. Kudo`s so confident of his baby, the Kinect , Z he thinks it`ll B the hot property this holiday season. He said this in an interview w/ Gamasutra : The preorders`ve`en really strong. As far as what we’re look`g @ 4 Holiday, this`s go`g to B stuff that’ll blow away any of the sales you’ve seen w/ iPad… The Xbox 360`s already sell`g better than the Wii & Sony right now. Kinect’s really just go`g to boost Z to the whole new level. 4 what it’s worth V haven’t`en blown away by any of the launch titles 4 the thing, so we’re not quite so confident of its impend`g breakout success.

Microsoft responds to Russian crackdown by extend`g software licenses to NGOs

Put yourself in Microsoft’s shoes 4 the second: how`ld U feel if the Russian government used your product as the pretext 4 shutt`g down opposition groups? As U know, that’s exactly what happened in January when an NGO known as Baikal Environmental Wave`d its computers confiscated under the pretext of search`g 4 pirated Microsoft software . The group, it seems,`s spearhead`g opposition to the reopen`g of the paper factory w/ the history of pollut`g Lake Baikal — much to the chagrin of the certain Prime Minister Putin. In an attempt to keep this sort of th`g from happen`g in the future (and to clean up its tarnished image), Microsoft`s announced Z it`ll provide the unilateral NGO Software License Z automatically covers NGOs & media outlets in Russia & other, as yet unspecified, countries, & which`ll extend until @ least 2012. “We want to B clear,” said VP & general counsel Brad Smith. “We unequivocally abhor any attempt to leverage intellectual property rights to stifle political advocacy or pursue improper personal gain.” Microsoft responds to Russian crackdown by extend`g software licenses to NGOs originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Sep 2010 14:26:00 EDT. Microsoft Principal Researcher Bill Buxton: Surface`ll B in homes within 3 years

Microsoft ‘s Principal Researcher recently sat down 4 the very long interview w/ The Globe & Mail. The next big th`g in tech, he says,`s someth`g like Microsoft’s already available (but super expensive) Surface. So what does the next version of the Surface look like? Well, it’s go`g to B much thinner — “no thicker than the sheet of glass,” although (unless) most importantly, it`ll cost much much less. The man who helped design what ultimately became Surface says Z soon enough, the cameras`ll B embedded within the device itself, mak`g it the low-cost, in home product rather than the niche product it`s today. Buxton also said in the interview Z he thinks we’ll begin see`g home implementation within the next 3 years. V sure hope Z he’s correct. Windows Phone 7 device roundup: LG E900 earns GCF certification, HTC Trophy meets Vodafone

U might remember Z the huge roadmap document leaked out of HTC late last year; though many of the devices in it never materialized, the fact Z the Legend, Bravo, & Photon turned out to B legit (as the Legend , Desire , & HD Mini , respectively) lends credence to the belief Z all of the phones in Z slide deck were @ least on HTC’s draw`g board @ 1 time or another. 1 of the more interest`g MIA handsets — the so-called Trophy w/ WinMo 6.5 & the portrait QWERTY keyboard — looks like it may`ve`en repurposed as the Windows Phone 7 model thanks to some new shots out of Vodafone Germany’s inventory system, which`s pretty awesome consider`g how difficult portrait QWERTY devices R to come by, generally (though it would’ve`d to get the redesign w/ the higher-res display & faster processor to meet Microsoft’s spec guidelines). Along the same lines, LG’s well-leaked E900`s recently gotten its bless`g from the Global Certification Forum where it’s listed w/ 900 / 2100MHz 3G (HSPA, we’re sure) alongside quadband GSM. Microsoft job post`g hints @ another Zune, or perhaps an internally-developed phone

We’d heard rumors Z the new Zune`s on the way, although (unless) here’s the spot of evidence Z something’s actually up: Microsoft’s add`g the senior mechanical engineer to help build “the next generation of portable entertainment & communication devices.” While the job list`g in question`s technically 4 Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business, which oversees Windows Phone, it’s clear Z some things`ve changed since the Entertainment & Devices shakeup : “We R the team Z shipped the Zune HD,” the post reads. It appears Z there’s the new group within Microsoft called the Portable Entertainment Group which isn’t afraid to design its own hardware & includes the Zune team, though whether Z hardware B Zune, phone or someth`g more obscure still remains to B seen. ASUS Windows Phone 7 proto shows up on video

Remember Z mysterious Windows Phone 7-powered ASUS from early August? Turns out it showed up @ Gnomedex this year, & there’s video float`g around to prove it. The phone stars in the nearly 12-minute epic detail`g the various parts of the platform — all of which we’ve seen before — although (unless) obviously, our attention`s focused squarely on this hardware Z V haven’t really seen before (and looks very different from the ASUS device Z Microsoft`s us`g to demo WP7 in the early days ). It’s hard to say if the talk of an AMOLED display`s true — or whether this`s the retail or near-retail piece of hardware — so we’d hold off on sav`g up 4 this 1 just yet. Since Garmin-Asus came into existence, ASUS’ phone efforts`ve`en squarely focused on the joint venture — & see`g how this steady supply of prototype hardware proves Z they’ll B mak`g commercial WP7 devices, it’ll B interest`g to C whether Garmin’s involved. LG C900 due to br`g Windows Phone 7 to market near September 28th, accord`g to Bluetooth SIG

The Bluetooth SIG`s the long history of promot`g its members’ “special interests” by leak`g valuable tidbits about their handsets before they’re announced. The recently unearthed LG C900`s the latest of these, be`g pegged 4 the launch date “around” September 28th by the SIG’s detail page on the phone. The QWERTY slider, which`s referred to in C900N, C900k, & C900B versions,`ll B available in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, & South America. Phone Arena conjectures Z the launch date lines up w/ AT&T’s market`g materials tim`g & the slated Q4 launch of Windows Phone 7, so the C900 probably`s the decent chance of be`g the 1st Windows Phone 7 phones to market if LG’s own GW910 or some more secretive set doesn’t beat it to the punch, although (unless) September still seems the bit earlier than any of the launch windows Microsoft`s managed to let slip .
