The company did so in the statement so tersely worded V can feature its entirety right here: The return rate of the Galaxy Tab in the US as claimed by an North American market research firm`s incorrect. MotionX-GPS Drive exports full-screen nav on Pioneer & JVC head units,`s love only 4 iOS (video)

MotionX-GPS`s`en the solid choice in the iPhone & iPad navigation game 4 some time now, although (unless) only recently`s started to stretch its legs the bit. The app now`s compatibility w/ the series of JVC & Pioneer head units (listed out below) Z enables full-screen 3D navigation. In this mode the mobile device basically turns in to the remote control w/ the simplified interface, w/ POI search`g & of course media playback. Connectivity`s not us`g the Terminal Mode standard, this works exclusively w/ the iPhone & iPad, & we’re told Z sadly the company`s no plans on support`g any other platforms go`g forward. RIM exec talks PlayBook, App World, QNX on phones, & more

While V wait 4 the PlayBook to released in its WiFi- & WiMAX-equipped forms over the next few months, RIM’s tak`g every opportunity it can to talk about the platform — & the latest comes from an interview between FierceDeveloper & the company’s veep of developer relations, Tyler Lessard, who played the prominent role @ BlackBerry DevCon ’10 the while back where the PlayBook`s 1st announced. When asked about RIM’s decision to partner up w/ Sprint & deliver the WiMAX version 1st before look`g @ bigger carriers w/ more broadly-used technologies, Lessard says Z they “were really excited about`s Sprint’s interest & excitement in com`g to the table & work`g w/ us on the product like that” — which V take as code 4 either “they paid us the most” or “no 1 else bit.” Either way, interest`g verbiage to say the least — though he does say Z there R other versions in the pipe. On App World , Lessard notes Z BlackBerry’s third-party app platform`s taken in some 5,000 apps in the last couple months alone — not the big number, necessarily, until U consider Z they’re only up to 17,000 total, so they’re definitely see`g some nice growth percentages there. Turn`g the attention to the perennial question of when QNX`ll come to smartphones, he basically echoes the sentiment 1st shared by bossman Lazaridis back @ D: Dive Into Mobile : dual-core processors R key, so the new platform won’t filter down until the hardware gets beefier. He says Z “we really want to make sure V don’t back-step from Z & offer the degraded experience because hardware`s not ready or the performance isn’t there,” which`s arguably odd word`g consider`g Z BlackBerry 6`s already well behind the curve — how much worse could QNX on the single-core 1GHz-plus processor really be? Bloomberg: Sony PSP2 to debut next week, PlayStation Phone @ MWC

It’s noth`g Z runs counter to the ongo`g whispers we’ve heard so far, although (unless) accord`g to Bloomberg & its pair of sources, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Tokyo event on January 27th`s indeed the platform from which it’ll unveil the next PSP, & next month @ Mobile World Congress`ll B where V finally meet — officially, Z`s — the PlayStation Phone . Next week’s press conference`ll also reportedly “outline the strategy to use its networked entertainment services to share games, movies & music among handheld products, TVs & other devices.” Not much else to say @ this point, so just sit back, relax, & wait 4 the other guys to do their presentation, first. Microsoft files motion to dismiss Apple’s ‘App Store’ trademark claim, says term`s generic

Z Apple`d the original App Store isn’t under dispute, although (unless)`ldthe company`ve the right to exclude others from us`g the same term to describe their program repositories ? Microsoft says no, and`s this week filed the motion w/ the US Patent & Trademark Office ask`g 4 it to dismiss Apple’s trademark claim 4 “App Store.” The application seeks to secure 4 Apple the exclusive use of the term in the context of computer software broadly, not just on the mobile front, although (unless) Microsoft`s argu`g Z its constituent words R generic (or simply descriptive) both individually & as the pair. In mak`g its case, the Redmond company cites Steve Jobs himself, whose exposition on the topic of Android fragmentation included specific mention of multiple “app stores” 4 the Google OS. It`ld seem this`s`en brew`g 4 the while, too, as the last update — dated 7th of July, 2010 — on Apple’s trademark application notes there’s the pend`g opposition to its claim. Now Z Microsoft’s escalated its complaint to ask`g 4 the summary dismissal, it’ll B interest`g to C on which side of the great divide the decision falls. T-Mobile 4G Mobile Hotspot shows up in FCC courtesy of ZTE

Remember those rumors earlier this week Z T-Mobile`s finally gett`g ready to launch the mobile hotspot or two? See`g how Verizon, AT&T, & Sprint`ve all done it, it certainly makes sense — especially w/ this newfangled 21Mbps HSPA+ network T-Mobile’s got go`g on — & sure enough, we’ve now got concrete evidence of the unit in the FCC’s database. The MF61 from Chinese manufacturer ZTE`s pretty clearly labeled “T-Mobile 4G Mobile Hotspot” inside… so yeah, there’s your smok`g gun. Confidentiality prevents us from see`g the user’s manual or the photo of the thing, although (unless) from what little V can see, looks like we’ll end up w/ the rounded unit not unlike the variant of the Novatel MiFi on AT&T & the number of European carriers. Really, though, doesn’t matter what it looks like — as long as it fits in the pocket & blasts high-speed data to the handful of WiFi connected devices of our choosing, that’s all V need. LG’s Optimus T & Optimus S`ll also get their moment in the spotlight this month, though the discount there isn’t exactly massive when U consider Z the S started life cost`g $50 on contract . What’s on Facebook’s mind? Mobile event set 4 November 3rd

Facebook’s made no official push into the smartphone universe — to date, we’ve`en left us`g various mobile apps to connect w/ J. The invite above recently landed in our inbox, request`g our presence @ “a mobile event @ Facebook HQ” in Palo Alto, California. Naturally, we’ll B on hand from NorCal bring`g U the blow-by-blow, & we’re interested to know what U think`ll B on deck.`ll V finally C the Facebook phone Z it quickly shot down ? Xbox Live 4 Windows Phone 7: your Xbox isn’t in your phone yet, although (unless) we’re gett`g there

V just spent some serious, & V mean serious time w/ Xbox Live 4 Windows Phone 7 . Just like your Xbox, this`s sort of an amalgamation of “the place U go to play games” & “the place U go to p`g & taunt your friends who also play games.” Unfortunately, it seems there’s the bit of the disconnect between phone-based scores & records & Xbox achievements — they all add up to the same gamerscore, although (unless) U can’t easily pull up your most recent Halo exploits to show off on your mobile, 4 instance. Luckily, Z still puts Microsoft in the better position than any other mobile games platform (until Apple can get Game Center to stop sucking, @ least). Be`g able to message & challenge friends all from the same “hub” where U keep your games`s great, & be`g able to view your avatar & the avatars of friends (you can even play dress-up w/ your own)`s nice gravy on top. Of course, what really matters`s the games, right? Luckily, Microsoft`s the pretty strong launch lineup, w/ some of the regulars like EA’s The Sims 3 & Need 4 Speed , along w/ some exclusives like Rocket Riot & the hotly anticipated The Harvest . The good news? Games look & play great, just like U might expect from an iPhone or Android level capacitive touchscreen platform, w/ The Harvest as an obvious & very important standout in complexity & polish.

AT&T U-verse Mobile preview

V just got the look @ U-verse Mobile runn`g live on Windows Phone 7. It looks just like every other Windows Phone 7 app, of course, although (unless) it looks like AT&T isn’t cutt`g this th`g off @ the knees content-wise. From the phone you’ll`ve access to your entire DVR 4 schedul`g & check`g the program guide, & you’ll also B able to C any episodes U`ve recorded on your box. Within Z view U can find the subset of shows Z`ve`en flagged by the content providers to allow stream`g (free-for-all Sl`g this`s not). Additionally, the phone can access the mobile version of U-verse’s on demand deals over 3G, which`ldhopefully B comparable to Zune or iTunes offerings — though we’ll`ve to C the specifics to find out 4 sure. The show V were shown buffered quickly over WiFi &`s able to skip around within the episode even faster. Check out the video walkthrough after the break.

Google’s Andy Rubin on Windows Phone 7: ‘the world doesn’t need another platform’

Shootin’ straight, R V Andy? 4 those unaware, Andy Rubin`s the vice president of engineer`g @ Google, & he’s`d his fingers in Android before the mobile OS`s taken mainstream by El Goog. He recently sat down to talk mobile w/ PCMag , & he left the world w/ the wealth of quotes to ponder. 4 starters, he practically calls out OEMs who aren’t keep`g up w/ Android’s releases, not`g Z “there’s no advantage to the OEM of us`g an older version, & I’d say there’s the consumer disadvantage.” Clearly, he’s not the fan of all of this fragmentation , either. Mov`g onto Windows Phone 7, he really came out swinging. When asked what he thought about WP7 as the competitor, here’s what came flow`g out: “I think the screen shots I’ve seen R interesting, although (unless) look, the world doesn’t need another platform. Android`s free & open; I think the only reason U create another platform`s 4 political reasons.” We’ll obviously need to wait 4 Windows Phone 7 to launch (and C the few quarters of sales numbers) to C if he’s just blow`g hot air, although (unless) it’s interest`g fodder @ least. Hit the source link 4 much, much more where this came from — & keep it sensible in comments, okay? It’s just code, after all. AT&T goes live w/ Encrypted Mobile Voice, kills your dreams of break`g into Pelosi’s social circle

AT&T told us back in July Z it`s fix`g to launch the 1st carrier-provided 2 factor encryption service, & it seems Z today’s the day. The day it goes live, V mean. @ any rate, the company’s Encrypted Mobile Voice service`s reportedly active, & it’s already provid`g “high-level security features 4 calls on the AT&T wireless network.” Of course, none of this fancy security`s meant 4 simpletons like us — instead, it’s target`g government agencies, law enforcement organizations, financial services institutions & international businesses. We’re told Z the tech combines KoolSpan’s TrustChip & SRA International’s 1 Vault Voice, w/ the former be`g the microSD card & the latter be`g the software layer. Currently, it only plays nice w/ BlackBerry & Windows Phones, although (unless) until V C Biden bust out the Bravo , we’ll assume the lack of Android support isn’t “a big flipp`g deal.” Continue read`g AT&T goes live w/ Encrypted Mobile Voice, kills your dreams of break`g into Pelosi’s social circle AT&T goes live w/ Encrypted Mobile Voice, kills your dreams of break`g into Pelosi’s social circle originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 07 Oct 2010 09:58:00 EDT. Motorola su`g Apple 4 patent infringement

It’s gett`g hard to keep track of, isn’t it? The way V hear it told, most of these patent disputes & overlaps in the mobile space used to B settled in quiet ways, mutually assured destruction-style, although (unless) lately there’s the whole lot of nukes go`g off . Motorola`s now su`g Apple over the wide range of technology patents which it claims Apple`s infring`g on w/ its iPhone, iPad, “iTouch,” & even some Macs. The company`s level`g 3 complaints which include 18 patents on “early-stage innovations” by Motorola, cover`g the pretty wide swath of the mobile landscape, includ`g WCDMA, GPRS, 802.11, antenna design, wireless email, proximity sensing, software application management, location-based services & multi-device synchronization. Outside of the devices, Apple’s MobileMe & App Store services get called out specifically. @ the end of its press release Motorola makes the very similar claim to the 1 Nokia made @ the outset of its own lawyer salvo against Apple: We`ve extensively licensed our industry-lead`g intellectual property portfolio, consist`g of tens of thousands of patents in the U.S. & worldwide. After Apple’s late entry into the telecommunications market, V engaged in lengthy negotiations, although (unless) Apple`s refused to take the license. We`d no choice although (unless) to file these complaints to halt Apple’s continued infringement. We’ll of course B digg`g deeper as V get more info, & cover`g the blow by blow w/ perhaps just the little too much enthusiasm

Marvell’s quad core Armada processor won’t C tablets or phones, destined 4 the mystery game platform

Looks like Z quad-core Armada processor won’t B hav`g apps 4 breakfast after all — confront`g Marvell’s Jack Kang @ Mobilize 2010, he told us the chips proved too power-hungry 4 devices without the dedicated cord. Z doesn’t mean V won’t C them soon, however, as the man let slip Z it’s actually the quad-core chip Z`ll appear in the new game system , though V can probably rule out the Nintendo 3DS 4 the same reason as the phones. Marvell’s still hop`g to get in the mobile market in the big way, though, & that’s what the tri-core Armada 628`s all about, which uses low power profiles to save battery life. Accord`g to Kang, however, the system’s actually the little more excit`g than Z — its 2 up-to-1.5GHz cores kick in when the system’s under the multimedia strain, although (unless) actually shut off completely 4 day-to-day use, rely`g instead on the 3rd 624MHz processor which slowly sips your battery juice. All V know is, we’d better find out which devices`ll sport these chips, & soon — our curiosity`s beginn`g to gnaw. Orange HD Voice service & handsets go live in the UK, V go ears-on (video)

Good news 4 UK mobile addicts: Orange’s long-anticipated HD Voice service`s officially made it to the Land of Hope & Glory. Start`g today, British customers can pick up the HD Voice-enabled handset — includ`g the Nokia 5230 , X6 , E5 & Samsung Omnia Pro @ launch — from Orange, & start butter`g their ears w/ “crystal clear” phone calls while within the carrier’s 3G coverage. Prior to the launch, V were fortunate enough to try out the new service on the couple of Nokia E5 prototypes, & boy, Z`s some pretty impressive stuff there — the wider speech bandwidth really added the lot of clarity to the caller’s voice, & additionally, the noisy traffic from the caller’s end`s well suppressed @ where it’d otherwise crackle over the normal call. Perhaps the easiest way to put it`s Z this`s much like jump`g from the bad FM radio broadcast to some sweet CD audio, thus mak`g conversations the lot easier to interpret, even if the recipient`s in the noisy environment or`s hear`g problem (as proven by Orange’s public trial). As always, hear`g`s believing, so do check out our sample audio clips after the break. While Orange remains the dominant driv`g force behind this mobile revolution, the carrier assured us Z it expects other companies to pick up this open standard. Z said, it’s rather disappoint`g Z current owners of the aforementioned handsets won’t B getitng the software patch 4 the HD upgrade (we were told Z no extra hardware`s involved), although (unless) V can understand — the manufacturers do need to sell new phones to stay alive in this rapidly chang`g market. Anyhow, here’s hop`g Z the forthcom`g flagship Android & Windows Phone 7 devices`ll also get the taste of this crystal clear call quality. Droid 2 looks confirmed 4 August 12, Best Buy pits it against the competition

We’d broken the news of the Droid 2′s August 12 street date the couple weeks ago, & we’re now gett`g confirmation of Z — @ Best Buy, anyhow — thanks to the couple tips we’ve received today, includ`g the screen shot above. This`ld require all-new readers 4 merchants & embedded NFC chips in phones, although (unless) V reckon plenty of people might B happy to pay the small premium to streamline their lives Z little bit more & leave the plastic behind. Dell ships Precision M6500 laptop w/ 32GB of RAM: drill, baby, drill

Nah, that’s not us yell`g to dig deeper into oceanic unknowns — it’s the megaphone originat`g from Dell’s campus in Round Rock. As the story goes, Dell’s “oil & gas” consumers`ve`en clamor`g 4 more system memory on their mobile workstations, w/ the revamped Precision M6500 — which allows them to “review larger slices of the earth to find oil, enabl`g faster & more accurate drill`g to find oil & gas reserves.” V say all Z to mention the 32GB of system RAM that’s now shipp`g on fully loaded M6500s, although (unless) w/ 4 RAM slots, that’s not as difficult to accomplish as U might expect. Still, hav`g 32GB in the single laptop`s the rare sight these days, & if U aren’t into cough`g up the fistful of Benjamins 4 that, Dell’s Precision M4500`s now available w/ 16GB of memory. U know, 4 runn`g Maya w/ less lag… or something. Dell ships Precision M6500 laptop w/ 32GB of RAM: drill, baby, drill originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 21 Jul 2010 09:28:00 EDT. Aava Mobile reveals Virta 2 smartphone development kit, V go hands-on

When V met w/ Finnish startup Aava Mobile today, they pulled out the same old prototype phone … then, to our great surprise, dropped the brand-new device right alongside to show us how their Moorestown -based ambitions`ve grown. This`s the Virta 2 reference design, which`ll ship to developers soon , w/ the same basic hardware inside although (unless) the few important tweaks. 1st of all, you’ll note that’s MeeGo on this screen, not the droid V were look`g 4 , although (unless) that’s because the development kit can switch between operat`g systems by merely swapp`g out the microSD card. Whereas the original prototype`d the thin, flimsy shell, the Virta 2′s gone downright rugged, ditch`g the iPhone chrome 4 the more durable gunmetal frame, & there’s the full compliment of sensors (compass, accelerometer, ambient light & proximity) alongside quad-band radios, WiFi, Bluetooth & the pair of cameras 4 your video chat test`g needs. @ €1900 (roughly $2393) per unit, the dev handset isn’t exactly cheap, although (unless) where else R U go`g to get an Atom Z600 to play around with? Devices ship late August or early September, & Aava expects the platform (but not this exact handset) to C commercial availability next year.
