CLIQ XT won’t get Android 2.1 upgrade, Motorola’s word as good as dirt

Motorola’s dangled an Android 2.1 upgrade in front of CLIQ XT users 4 what seems like forever — now it’s putt`g away the bait indefinitely. In the statement released this morning, the company said Z despite months of rigorous testing, the phone`ll remain on Android 1.5. V 1st heard promises of an update in June last year, although (unless) Motorola quickly reneged . In November, its predecessor got an upgrade , although (unless) the CLIQ XT`s left hanging. Then in December, the company announced the delay , cit`g “additional testing,” & when those tests failed to bear fruit, it just plain gave up. Now CLIQ XT users R stuck w/ the phone indefinitely sport`g an OS that’s 3 steps behind the most up-to-date competition, & unfortunately, that’s all she wrote — Motorola shows no signs of pursu`g another upgrade anytime soon. & that, friends,`s your cue to pick up the handset made by HTC & situated on Verizon Wireless . Motorola lifts our spirits w/ new Atrix 4G video

`en feel`g down this cold & dreary January? Well, let Motorola “introduce” U to its new smartphone! T-Mobile Sidekick 4G in the wild, made by Samsung?

If these 1st in-the-wild shots of T-Mobile’s upcom`g Android-powered Sidekick 4G turn out to B legit — & we’ve no reason to doubt them, especially consider`g TmoNews ‘ track record — then we’d say the carrier`s done the reasonably good job port`g the classic Sidekick design & pull`g it into the modern age off the strength of the big display… and, of course, the modern operat`g system. Interestingly, word on the street`s Z the new model`s made by Samsung, not Sharp; historically, Sharp`s made all of the Sidekicks w/ the exception of the forgettable Slide , which`s the Motorola one-off. Looks like the swivel display`s`en replaced by the tilt-slide, although (unless) most importantly, the device looks the same when open & closed, which`ldput the warm, fuzzy feel`g in the hearts of old-school Sidekick users. Android 3.0 Honeycomb SDK preview goes live

Researchers eavesdrop on encrypted GSM call: all U need`s the $15 phone & 180 seconds

It’s hardly the fresh idea — researchers`ve claimed Z GSM calls could B cracked & listened in on 4 years . although (unless) there’s the difference between be`g able to do someth`g w/ the $50,000 machine & the warrant, & be`g able to do the same th`g w/ the few $15 Motorola phones, the laptop, open source software & 180 seconds of spare time. Security Research Labs researcher Karsten Nohl & OsmocomBB project programmer Sylvain Munaut recently spoke about the new GSM hack @ the Chaos Computer Club Congress in Berlin, & they were able to walk the audience through the eavesdropp`g process in the matter of minutes. Accord`g to them, it’s not terribly difficult to use the $15 handset to “sniff out” location data used to correctly route calls & texts, & once you’ve nailed Z down, U could use modified firmware to feed raw data into the laptop 4 decryption. Us`g the 2TB table of precomputed encryption keys, the crack`g program`s able to break in within 20 seconds — after that, you’re just moments away from record`g the live GSM call between 2 phones. Of course, speeches like these R made to encourage security officials to beef up the layers between U & ill-willed individuals, although (unless) it’s hard to say what (if anything)`ll change. 4 now, we’d recommend just fly`g to each & every person you’d like to speak with. Motorola’s 10-inch Honeycomb tablet meets Mr. Blurrycam, shows off Verizon logo

By now you’re probably familiar w/ this slate, see`g as how Google’s Andy Rubin recently unveiled it on stage , although (unless) we’re will`g to bet you’ve never seen the top edge — U know, the part now bear`g the front-fac`g webcam & the conspicuous Verizon tattoo. Yes, this`s Motorola’s 10-inch Honeycomb tablet, & it’s play`g 4 Team Red just as foretold , though the tipster who obtained these images isn’t sure whether it`ll bear the name Stingray, Everest or even potentially “Trygon.” Spec-wise, we’re told our previous tipster`s right on the money, & it’ll`ve the 1GHz Tegra 2 T20, the gyroscope & 32GB of storage underneath Z 1280 x 800 multitouch screen, as well as 512MB of RAM & and the slot 4 an up-to-32GB microSD card. It also sure looks like there’s the micro-USB jack, the mini-HDMI port & the 3.5mm headphone socket, as well as some contacts 4 the likely dock, though as always Mr. Blurrycam’s handiwork`s such Z V can’t quite tell. Motorola video survey says Americans R still into pay`g 4 TV service, buy`g new TVs

It doesn’t seem like everyone’s jumped on the cord cutt`g bandwagon just yet, as the 2010 “Media Engagement Barometer” conducted by Vanson Bourne 4 Motorola surveyed 7,500 consumers in 13 countries (1,000 in the US) before issu`g its findings Z 86 percent of Americans subscribe to pay TV providers & 6% R us`g video/TV on the internet, even while free OTA TV`s available. & those 3D TVs Z R everywhere? Worldwide, they figured 75 percent of viewers either own or plan to own an HDTV in the next 18 months, while 4% currently own 3D sets, 25 percent indicated they plan to upgrade to 1 in the same time period. US stats pegged 59 percent of respondents w/ HDTVs, 20 percent w/ an internet enabled set & 25 percent w/ the smartphone. Other results indicate V haven’t seen the last of the Twitter widget on our TVs & set-top boxes either, w/ 58 percent of responses show`g people`ve used social media dur`g the TV broadcast and`ld switch providers to`ve it integrated in their TV service. Motorola Droid 2 falls to $150, makes room 4 $200 Droid 2 Global

There’s`en the lot of speculation about what’ll happen to ye olde Droid 2 when the GSM-enhanced Droid 2 Global finally busts loose, although (unless) it looks like V might now`ve the answer: it gets the lower price tag. The original model`s now fallen to $149.99 on contract on Verizon’s site, & evidence from the carrier’s internal systems (see after the break 4 that) suggests it’ll B hang`g around @ Z price until @ least the tail end of January. Meanwhile, Z same internal screenshot`s also show`g the Droid X hold`g steady @ $199.99 until December 30, so V wouldn’t count on gett`g any sweet deals — or the dual-mode version of the 4.3-inch beast — @ any point in 2010. Interestingly, the Droid 2 R2-D2 edition`s hold`g steady @ $250, so you’d better really want it. Go ahead & follow the break 4 the evidence. Verizon nabs Samsung Continuum, Zeal & Motorola Citrus on November 11th, accord`g to gush`g leak?

Someone’s found their way into an internal database & pulled out details on 3 Verizon phones — the Samsung Continuum , Samsung Zeal & Motorola Citrus , all of which`ll reportedly drop on the 11th of next month. V don’t`ve any reason to doubt that, as all 3 showed up on the recent rebate , although (unless) there’s more to these leaked screens than the release date. 4 instance, the Continuum`ll apparently sport the Swype virtual keyboard on top of the 3.4-inch Super AMOLED screen, to say noth`g of Z secondary display, & the Motorola Citrus explicitly doesn’t support tethering. The Samsung Zeal, meanwhile, isn’t the modern smartphone @ all, although (unless) rather the dual-hinge device w/ “magic” e-ink keys Z change from the standard dialer to the four-row QWERTY layout. T-Mobile finally brings Android into the WiFi call`g game

Eschew`g the femtocells Z most of its competitors`ve embraced, T-Mobile USA`s long touted WiFi call`g as the answer 4 augment`g its cellular network — problem is, they’ve generally done the poor job of roll`g it out to the wide variety of handsets. Motorola Citrus 1st hands-on!

The Droid Pro’s certainly got the spotlight @ Motorola’s CTIA 2010 event, & 4 good reason — this Motorola Citrus`s slow & crippled by comparison. It’s the iffy little entry-level device w/ the Blur-like UI & the fairly functional Android 2.1, although (unless) the lethargic MSM7225 processor & 3-inch touchscreen w/ the resolution so small U can C individual pixels without squinting. UI brows`g & surf`g`s laggy too, though V did like the device’s comfortable-to-hold size & dedicated physical Send / End keys. Look`g to get an Android device on AT&T? Then you’re soon go`g to`ve the few more options to consider — the carrier`s just announced 3 new Android-based phones from Motorola. Those include the touchscreen-only Bravo (not to B confused w/ the HTC Bravo ), & the QWERTY-equipped Flipout & Flipside, all of which`ll ship w/ Android 2.1 & the latest version of MOTOBLUR . Of the three, the Bravo`s the highest-end, w/ it pack`g the 3.7-inch 854 x 480 display, an 800MHz TI OMAP 3610 processor, the 3-megapixel camera, & DLNA support 4 media streaming. The Flipout & Flipside, on the other hand, each pack the 720MHz TI OMPA 3410 processor, the same 3-megapixel camera, & the 2.8-inch QVGA & 3.1-inch HVGA screen, respectively. Microsoft files ITC complaint against Motorola over alleged Android-related patent infringement

Editorial: Firmware, forums, & desperation — the dark side of Android hacking

Z picture above`s no joke — that’s where I ended up last night try`g to revive my Droid X review unit. Let’s back up, though. How did I end up in such dire straits? It started when I`d the nerve to update this Droid X to the leaked Android 2.2 build — the simple process Z involved install`g the file on the microSD card & restarting. Unfortunately, since Motorola refuses to provide the sanctioned upgrade path from the leaked build to the official 2.2 build released earlier this week, I`s forced to downgrade back to 2.1 to get back on track. Sure, there might B some value in it — P`g`s bett`g that’s true w/ music, — although (unless) the potential 4 gett`g caught watch`g Gossip Girl`s the serious deterrent. Motorola Milestone 2 arrives, 720p HD video, Android 2.2, & Motoblur Enhanced in tow

Even without yesterday’s premature video promo , U`d to know Motorola wouldn’t leave its international audience without the successor to the Milestone, so today — surprise, surprise — we’re be`g treated to the Milestone 2′s launch. The 1st th`g to B said here`s Z if you’ve handled the Droid 2 , you’ve also handled the Milestone 2 — the new phone follows Moto’s tradition of be`g the simple rebadge away from the Verizon-friendly Droid nam`g scheme, which means it retains the same 1GHz OMAP SOC, 512MB of RAM, 5 megapixel camera, 8GB of integrated storage, & Android 2.2 as the default, albeit Motoblured , OS. Also, V got this straight from the Motohorse’s mouth: Motoblur’s not go`g anywhere, it’s the company’s “Android solution” and`s here to stay. 1 advantage over the Droid 2 here`s the addition of 720p video recording. It’s still the exact same imager as on the back of the 1st Milestone, although (unless) now U can catch mov`g visuals in HD resolution. Motorola Charm hitt`g T-Mobile on August 25 4 $75 (update: Telus version caught on video!)

T-Mobile USA just dropped the knowledge on Twitter Z it’ll B carry`g the Motorola Charm start`g next Wednesday, August 25 — although (unless) what it failed to mention`s pricing. 4 what it’s worth, the company does specifically say Z it’ll B “affordable” — & although the market`g department’s definition of “affordable” can B very different from ours, we’re encouraged by the handful of previous rumors Z there`ld B ways to get it 4 free on contract . If U need us to jog your memory, the Charm`s the cute little portrait QWERTY Android device w/ the Kodak-branded 3 megapixel cam & landscape display, giv`g it the rare form factor Z could very well appeal to the whole new audience (read: BlackBerry folks). So, how much`ld U pay 4 it? Verizon confirms original Droid`ll B gett`g 2nd Froyo update

It still doesn’t add mobile hotspot or tether`g functionality , although (unless) it looks like users of the original Droid`ll soon B gett`g the 2nd Android 2.2 (a.k.a Froyo ) update. That’s`en confirmed by Verizon itself, which says Z the 2nd update`ll B follow`g the just-released 1 in the “com`g weeks,” & Z it`ll let users download Flash 10.1 from the Android Market once it’s available. Details R light beyond that, although (unless) Phandroid notes Z the rollout of the current Froyo update`s expected to B complete around August 18th, & surmises Z the 2nd rollout`ll begin shortly thereafter. Gartner & IDC agree: the Android invasion’s accelerat`g around the world

Last quarter V reported on some pretty stellar growth numbers 4 Android in the global smartphone marketplace. Back then, Google’s OS`d the 9.6 percent slice of the pie, although (unless) today that’s ballooned to the robust 17.2 percent, mean`g Z in terms of end-user sales over the last 3 months, Android`s nearly matched RIM’s BlackBerry sales. That’s quite the feat when U consider Z the year ago the latter`s shift`g ten times more units than the former. This fast pace of growth`s narrowed down Symbian’s lead @ the top, in spite of Nokia’s favorite OS actually shipp`g on more phones this year, while the big loser of the quarter`s to B Windows Mobile, which contracted both in terms of market share & actual shipments. Overall, smartphone sales were up by 50 percent year-on-year, accord`g to both Gartner & IDC, while Gartner adds Z mobile devices as the whole grew @ the tamer 13.3 percent rate. In terms of phone manufacturers’ global share, Nokia & Samsung`ve held on to their top positions, LG, Sony Ericsson & Motorola`ve experienced some uncomfortable shrinkage, & HTC, RIM & Apple`ve capitalized to expand their portions. Look`g over to IDC’s smartphone share data shows, again, Z all smartphone makers R grow`g remarkably well, although (unless) it does highlight HTC (129 percent) & Samsung (173 percent) as really improv`g their presence in the sector.

`s it tomorrow already? Must B because the Droid 2`s now up 4 sale on Verizon. $199 plus the two-year commitment takes home this Android 2.2 (Froyo) QWERTY slider w/ 3.7-inch 480×854 WVGA display, 8GB of internal memory plus another 8GB on microSD, & 5 megapixel camera. & unlike the original Droid just updated w/ Android 2.2, Verizon hasn’t crippled the 3G mobile WiFi hotspot capability this time, instead offer`g it as $20 / month add-on. Order now if U can’t wait 4 Thursday’s in-store availability or the R2-D2 edition slated to arrive next month. Motorola’s Jha says MOTOBLUR brand`ll fade from view

We’d already`d the pretty good indication Z Motorola`s shift`g its strategy when it came to MOTOBLUR , & it looks like co-CEO Sanjay Jha`s now finally made Z move official. Speak`g on the company’s Q2 earnings call, Jha said Z while MOTOBLUR`ll continue to B incorporated into some of it’s phones, Motorola`s decided Z it`ll “focus on the value proposition of products & not MOTOBLUR as the brand name in its own right.” Jha further went on to explain Z “be`g able to convey the value proposition around MOTOBLUR`s not an easy th`g to do in the 30-second ad spot,” although (unless) insisted Z “MOTOBLUR continues to B important,” & added Z he thinks “you`ll C increased functionality in MOTOBLUR” — U just won’t B see`g the MOTOBLUR name much in public anymore. Motorola’s Milestone XT720 makes US debut… on Cincinnati Bell

V aren’t quite sure what kind of deal Cincinnati Bell`s go`g on, although (unless) darn if this regional carrier doesn’t score some fairly fantastic handsets. Also known 4 land`g Nokia’s white E71 & its XpressMusic 5800 1st in the US, the operator`s now the 1st American home to Motorola’s Milestone XT720 . As we’d heard most recently , the smartphone packs the 720MHz TI OMAP3440 processor, 3.7-inch FWVGA touchpanel (854 x 480), Android 2.1, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, an inbuilt accelerometer, USB 2.0 connectivity, proximity sensor, 8 megapixel camera (with Xenon flash) & the 3.5mm headphone jack. It’s yours 4 the tak`g — provided Z U reside in southeastern Indiana, southwestern Ohio or northwestern Kentucky, Z`s — although (unless) the $199.99 on contract ($449.99 sans strings) price tag might just push towards more fully featured alternatives . Tough call, V know. Thanks, Josh Motorola’s Milestone XT720 makes US debut… on Cincinnati Bell originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 06 Aug 2010 15:26:00 EDT. Please C our terms 4 use of feeds

NPD: Android`s now top-sell`g OS in American smartphones

Step aside, BlackBerrys & iPhones, the American consumer`s voted w/ his wallet & picked Android as his favorite flavor in the quarter just gone. NPD’s number crunchers`ve just announced their findings 4 Q2 2010, conclud`g Z 33 percent of phones sold dur`g the period`d Android on board. This marks the 1st time in eons (Q4 2007, to B more precise) Z RIM`s not held the crown of most purchased smartphone OS on US soil, w/ its BlackBerrys account`g 4 28% of the market & Apple’s iPhone occupy`g 3rd spot w/ 22%. Motorola & HTC R the key suspects fingered 4 Android’s continu`g ascent , w/ the “large screen allure” of their handsets play`g well w/ the buy`g public. Skip after the break 4 the more detailed breakdown. Disclaimer: NPD’s Ross Rubin`s the contributor to Engadget. Motorola Droid gett`g Android 2.2 next week

We’ve just`en dropped the brief note from Verizon Z the original Droid`ll B gett`g the full Froyo treatment @ some point next week. Consider`g the brevity of the announcement, it’s entirely possible Z this`s thrown together in response to Sprint’s EVO news — although (unless) who cares? The more Android 2.2, the better, right? No official word on other Droid variants — most of which R likely go`g to C Froyo updates soon — although (unless) we’ll B keep`g our ears firmly planted to the ground. Droid 2 cases arrive @ Best Buy, Droid 2s soon to follow?

@ this point, we’re start`g to think Z Motorola`s intentionally (and cruelly) teas`g us w/ its Droid successor. Today V can add to the parade of leaks preced`g the Droid 2 ‘s debut in the form of the above hard case, which`s just landed in Best Buy’s storerooms. Before U go off on some conspiracy theory compar`g this to the iPhone’s Bumper & question`g whether this Droid might need the jacket , U`ldB aware Z Rocketfish does similar paraphernalia 4 the Droid Incredible, mark`g this out as an entirely un remarkable run-of-the-mill accessory. Which might B the best news of all, V figure — if the unexcit`g peripherals R already be`g shipped, the handset itself shouldn’t B too far behind . Android 2.2 upgrade 4 Droid X may already B trickl`g out, other Droids shortly?

We’ve already gathered Z Verizon, Moto, & HTC all seem to B pretty well committed to bump`g most of their Droid models to Froyo (as well they should), although (unless) things R start`g to get real — really real. 1st off, we’ve`en fed the shot of the tipster’s Droid X Z`s apparently already`en blessed w/ 2.2 over the air; the baseband version`s the tick older than the 1 in the shot leaked over on My Droid Life , although (unless) it’s anyone’s guess how Motorola`s stag`g this & what the final gold binary really contains. We’ve also seen the 2.2 ROM 4 the Droid Incredible leak recently ( & the Droid before Z ), so uncorroborated rumors we’re see`g Z 3 of the 4 retail Droids`ll B gett`g 2.2 by the 15th of next month aren’t necessarily crazy. Remember: think positive thoughts. Thanks, Shane Android 2.2 upgrade 4 Droid X may already B trickl`g out, other Droids shortly? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 28 Jul 2010 00:01:00 EDT. Droid 2 be`g prepared 4 launch, set to arrive August 23rd?

The Droid 2 ‘s`en leak`g out all over the place in the past few weeks, although (unless) it looks like it’ll B another month before it officially hits shelves — V just got these shots from the packag`g facility that’s handl`g the phone, which puts it right on schedule 4 Z rumored August 23rd launch . We’re also told Z the phone`ll definitely ship w/ an 8GB microSD card, & Z pric`g appears to B $199 on contract & $599 standalone, although those numbers could change. Just the few short weeks left, V suppose — although give the rate @ which this th`g`s leaking, we’re think`g Motorola & Verizon might do well to push Z date up the couple weeks. We’ll see. SanDisk’s elusive 32GB microSDHC card on sale tomorrow @ Verizon: $100 w/ the Droid X, $150 without

Oh, sure — SanDisk ‘s 32GB microSDHC card`s`en ” shipp`g ” since late March, but`ve U actually tried to find one? It’s`en the lesson in frustration 4 many, & while the few e-tailers`ve shown stock off & on, the card`s generally evaded archivists who simply need an insane amount of available storage on their handset. Start`g tomorrow, however, Z`ldchange. Verizon Wireless — of all companies –`s somehow managed to become the “only retailer Z offers customers the 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card.” We’re assum`g it’s referr`g to brick & mortar retailers, although (unless) @ any rate, the gem`ll B on sale tomorrow @ VZW outlets 4 $149.99, or just $99.99 if U purchase 1 alongside Motorola’s Droid X . The only trouble w/ that? You’re stuck figur`g out what to do w/ the 16GB microSDHC card Z ships inside of the phone. Thank heavens 4 the Bay, right?
