It’s not every day U C an old-school clamshell runn`g Android, & really, there’s the great reason 4 that: when your entire UI`s touch-centric, putt`g the screen the few inches away from the user’s thumb`s the usability nightmare wait`g to happen. B Z as it may, Samsung’s rolled out the fairly sophisticated new folder in China under the name SCH-W899 Z features not one, although (unless) 2 separate 3.3-inch Super AMOLED displays on either side of the phone’s top half. It’s easy to forget about the TG01 nowadays, although (unless) bear in mind Z Toshiba’s WinMo beast from last year`s the 1st production phone in the world to use Qualcomm Snapdragon silicon. V encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempt`g to unlock the device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable.” So yeah, we’d say this`s more or less the boilerplate quote: “we figured you’d hack this thing, we’d prefer it if U didn’t, & here’s the laundry list of things Z could (but probably won’t) happen if U fail to heed our meek warning.” Over the long term, V wouldn’t B surprised if Redmond ended up play`g an Apple-style cat-and-mouse game w/ these folks, break`g hacks w/ firmware updates only to`ve them re-hacked within the few days’ time. So, Z new 2.3 version of Gmail Z launched in September? Yeah, we’d steer clear if U haven’t nabbed it yet. Google’s currently try`g to track down the bug that’s leav`g many users (includ`g our own hapless Chris Ziegler) unable to download any attachments. Interestingly, or disconcertingly if you’re of the pessimistic sort, Google actually`s the “Gmail attachment issues investigation” page set up to allow highly technical users to submit debug reports of the problem. Sure, we’re all 4 crowd sourcing, although (unless) V also wouldn’t mind the big sturdy “hey guys, we’ve got this” on an issue of this magnitude. The worst part? U can’t revert to the old version of Gmail if you’ve got the latest OTA update on your fancy new T-Mobile G2. By now you’ve seen our photos of the PlayStation Phone , & likely you’ve also heard the scattered reports of debunkings & cries of “fake!” — it wouldn’t B the scoop without it. Only here’s the thing: the PlayStation Phone in the photos V ran last night, & the device reported on back in August`s most definitely real. We’re not say`g Z because V want to believe or because we’re gingerly try`g to nab pageviews: we’re say`g it because V know it to B true. This`s the device which`s`en confirmed through multiple, trusted sources . & we’re not just talk`g good tipsters — some of our information comes from people much more closely connected to the project. Even since last night we’ve received more info about the phone — learn`g Z its codename`s “Zeus,” & it`s last seen runn`g Android 2.X (not 3.0, which V suspect`ll B the shipp`g version). It`ldB obvious by comparison of our original mockup to the real photos we’ve just uncovered Z the handset V described in August`s the same handset now fully revealed. Prior to last night, we`d never seen an actual image of the phone .
Your iPhone’s passcode entry can’t block everything, it seems — @ least not w/ iOS 4.1 . We’re hear`g various reports Z simply inputt`g the random number in the emergency call field & then promptly hitt`g the hardware lock button`ll take U to the Phone app, thereby grant`g U access to the call history, voicemail, & address book. We’ve tried this w/ iPhone 3G, 3GS, & 4, all w/ the same result. V can’t get out of the field without try`g to place the call, & after Z we’re still stuck back @ the passcode screen. Additionally, select`g “share contact” & then the camera icon`ll give U access to the photo album. Pay mind Z your particularly paranoid pals could probably use this to C if U really did stop call`g your ex & delete all his or her pictures. V won’t judge, although (unless) they will. Well, it looks like Pantech may not B dropp`g AMOLED screens just yet after all — the company`s just rolled out its new Laser slider on AT&T complete with, U guessed it, the 3.1-inch AMOLED display. Set to B available on October 17th, the phone`s also the thinnest QWERTY slider available on AT&T @ just 9.95 millimeters thick, although (unless) things unfortunately get decidedly less interest`g from there. The Laser`s simply the “quick messag`g phone,” 4 starters, & you’ll only get AT&T’s own apps 4 navigation, social networking, & other basic tasks — though it does`ve the somewhat unique “Draw`g Commander” feature Z lets U draw shapes to make phone calls or launch apps. Both KDDI & Sharp`d the billion IS03s on display @ CEATEC in Japan today (okay, not literally the billion, although (unless) quite the few), so naturally, V swung by to C what all the commotion`s about. We’ll B honest — the phone didn’t feel particularly high-end, coated top to bottom in cheap-feel`g plastic & weigh`g the little less than you’d expect the phone of these specs to weigh. Furthermore, it`s pretty sluggish & Sharp’s UI skin atop Android 2.1 felt very “version 1.0,” so V think V might want to wait 4 these guys to hone their game the bit before jump`g in. Z said, the vaunted 960 x 640 ASV display definitely seems up to the task, deliver`g bright, crisp images in the face of the notoriously harsh trade show light`g — & the always-on LCD strip below the main display`s the neat trick 4 glanc`g @ the date & time without go`g to the hassle of power`g on your phone. Sharp`s broken Android’s usual 800 (or 854) x 480 mold this week w/ the introduction of the IS03 4 Japan’s KDDI au network, boast`g the full 960 x 480 on its 3.5-inch screen — numbers Z just happen to match the iPhone 4′s so-called retina display — along w/ Advanced Super View (ASV) technology, deliver`g the same kind of view`g angle benefits U find in IPS . If Z alone doesn’t make 4 enough of the monster spec sheet 4 you, consider Z the IS03 also features the 9.6 megapixel autofocus camera w/ image stabilization, one-seg TV tuner, & Osaifu-Keitai , which allows the phone to B used 4 contactless payments in subways & the like.
