Olympus XZ-1 reviewed: $499 4 sweet simplicity

We`d the feel`g the Olympus XZ-1`ld B the winner, & Digital Photography Review seems to think so, too — it called the 10 megapixel, full-manual point & shoot “the best photographers’ compact currently available” @ the end of the thorough review. Most of the praise`s heaped on Z F1.8-2.5 Zuiko lens, provid`g an “unbeaten combination of range & brightness” whose potent, detailed low-light performance`s practically enough to cancel out the publication’s worries about the lack of the adjustable noise reduction setting. Though the publication admitted Z the camera lacked the customization of certain Micro 4 Thirds cousins, it didn’t miss most of the advanced controls, preferr`g the streamlined menus & manual dials 4 easy access to common adjustments. (Battery charg`g over USB & the dedicated movie button were also deemed nice touches.) In fact, the only major d`g DPReview`d 4 Olympus`s the complete omission of auto exposure & autofocus locks 4 focus-and-recompose shooting, although (unless) if you’re will`g to snap shots us`g Olympus’s 11 AF points & aren’t look`g to tote the set of expensive interchangeable lenses around, this might B the one. Intel’s mSATA SSD 310 reviewed: the pint-size performer through & through

The forecast 4 speedy, razor-thin laptops`s look`g pretty sunny right about now, because it seems Intel’s SSD 310 truly does br`g the power of the full-sized solid state drive on the tiny little board. Storage Review & The SSD Review thoroughly benchmarked the tiny 80GB mSATA module this week, & found it performs even better than advertised — easily tear`g through 200MB / sec reads & 70 MB / sec writes — which put it slightly behind Intel’s legendary X25-M series although (unless) well ahead of the company’s X25-V boot drives . While we’re still not see`g Sandforce speeds from Intel’s tried-and-true controller & 34nm silicon & they might not make Toshiba’s Blade run 4 the hills, V can’t wait to test it out in some new Lenovo ThinkPads when they integrate the SSD 310 later this year. Oh, by the way, Z big green board up above isn’t the drive. It’s actually the tiny 1 on top. German researchers prototype 6mm thick pico projector

Pico projectors just keep shrinking, & the new prototype developed @ the Fraunhofer Institute 4 Applied Optics & Engineer`g`s help`g said shrink`g along pretty strikingly. The team`s developed the prototype pico which`s just 6mm thick, mak`g it the world’s slimmest ever. Better yet, the projected image`s 10 times brighter than the pico projector of its size`ld`ve previously`en –`d it existed. The new lens on the projector`s so small Z it could potentially B integrated into smart phones without boost`g size or weight. The new prototype`s made of 45 red, green or blue microlenses, each w/ the 200 x 200 pixel LCD, inspired by the microlens array called the fly’s eye condenser. The result`g resolution`s nearly, although (unless) not quite, WVGA w/ 11 lumens of brightness. The prototype`ll B shown off @ Nano Tech 2011 in Tokyo. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti: second-generation Fermi 4 the $250 mainstream

Ah, NVIDIA, how far you’ve come. This time last year V were all wonder`g if your 1st Fermi GPUs`ld operate successfully without the nuclear reactor in our backyards, yet today you’re introduc`g the successor to 1 of the best value-for-money GPUs the PC gam`g world`s seen in ages. Yes, the GTX 560 Ti`s mighty big shoes to fill, although (unless) it’s off to the good start w/ 384 CUDA cores runn`g @ 1645MHz, 1GB of GDDR5 RAM runn`g @ an effective rate of 4GHz, & an 822MHz graphics clock — each 1 the clear & pronounced upgrade over its GTX 460 predecessor. You’ll`ve to check out the reviews below 4 the detailed breakdown of what those numbers`ll mean on the game-by-game basis, although (unless) there’s another way in which this new card`s prov`g its impact already. ATI AMD`s (conveniently) chosen to cut the prices of its Radeon HD 6870 & HD 6950 cards today, while also out`g an HD 6950 w/ just 1GB of onboard memory to serve as the direct competitor to NVIDIA’s latest. Notion Ink Adams arrive to eager unboxers, 1st OTA brings new mean`g to DOA

Well,`ld U look @ that? Oh yes, that’s the real life Notion Ink Adam on some lucky guy’s table after be`g pulled from its fresh packaging. Sure, that’s to B expected consider`g the 10-inch, Android 2.2 tablets were boxed up & shipped out last week, although (unless) after the numerous delays , we’ve got to say it’s the true milestone 4 the India-based company. However, while the unbox`g videos & pictures R flow`g in — there R 2 right after the break 4 ya — there’s sadly some rain pour`g down on the company’s parade today. Accord`g to the chaps @ Android Police, the few people`ve encountered serious issues w/ an over-the-air update Z`s pushed to these new tablets. Apparently, hitt`g the update button & install`g the software`s caused the Tegra 2 Adam to stop boot`g (picture of Z sad sight @ the 2nd source link). That’s surely the FOF situation (frown on face, 4 those Z haven’t listened to the recent Engadget podcast ), although (unless) word`s Z Notion Ink`s stopped push`g out those updates 4 the time be`g & emailed customers about the issue. We’ll B keep`g an ear to the ground on this one, although (unless) in the meantime we’ll B here wait`g 4 our review unit to arrive so V can show those amateur, wobbly-cam unboxers how it’s really done

HP Pavilion dm1z (with AMD Fusion) review

It’s crazy to think we’ve`en writ`g about & wait`g 4 AMD’s Fusion platform 4 close to 5 years now. Believe it or not, it`s back in 2006 Z the chipmaker 1st started talk`g about its “new class of x86 processors” & the idea of an Accelerated Process`g Unit (APU) — the chip Z`ld combine the CPU & the fairly powerful ATI GPU onto the same die. The company promised to`ve the silicon ready in 2 years’ time, although (unless) when 2008 rolled around , it`s clear Z all it`s prepared to release`s the series of roadmap slides . Now, don’t get us wrong, those charts & graphs made us pretty giddy about the superior graphics & improved battery life Z AMD`s promis`g to br`g to affordable ultraportables, although (unless) then the year later, when AMD still`d only PowerPoint slides to show 4 itself, V started to think “Fusion”`s no more than the drunken fantasy. & it only got worse — from 2009 to mid-2010 the company continued to talk up its never-before-seen & highly-delayed chips. (Just the read through the Engadget archives from Z period pretty much illustrates Z we`d lost hope & started to think the chips`ld never C the light of day.) although (unless) then in June of 2010 the unthinkable happened — AMD finally demoed its 1st Fusion Bobcat cores, & proved, @ least from afar, Z the soon-to-arrive ultrathin laptop solution`ld chew through Aliens vs. Predator , support DirectX 11, & use the lot less power than its previous platforms. It seemed almost too good to B true — AMD looked ready to stick to its tim`g & deliver the 1st Fusion Brazos platform by early 2011.

Pentax K-5 review roundup: solid although (unless) pricey upgrade from the K-7

Pentax’s K-5 DSLR`s`en around 4 the little while now, although (unless) it’s only just recently received enough reviews to establish someth`g of the critical consensus. The short of it`s Z the camera largely addresses most of the criticisms leveled @ the K-7 it’s replac`g — namely, lackluster image quality & poor high ISO performance in particular — although (unless) those improvements come @ the fairly hefty cost. The K-7 costs about $300 more than the Nikon D7000 , which Digital Photography Review notes`s has the similar sensor although (unless) the “significantly more versatile AF system.” Photography Blog also came to some similar conclusions, although (unless) notes Z the “headline-grabb`g top-speed of 512000`s frankly unusable,” & suggests Z Pentax should`ve simply followed Nikon’s lead & capped things @ 25600. Despite Z high price & some minor issues, however, DP Review says the camera`s the “no-brainer” upgrade 4 current Pentax users, although (unless) obviously still someth`g of the tough sell 4 Canon or Nikon users. Dell Inspiron Duo review

When Dell 1st demoed the Inspiron Duo & its vertically rotat`g screen on stage @ IDF in September , our mouths nearly hit the floor. It looked like the plain old netbook until its 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen did the magical backflip & folded down over its keyboard to morph into the tablet. It`s like noth`g we’d ever seen before. & V actually figured it`ld B the sort of system Z`ld stay locked up in Dell’s labs, although (unless) when its specs were revealed — the dual-core Atom N550 processor, 2GB of RAM, & Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator — it became evident Z the netbook / tablet hybrid`s the real deal. Runn`g Windows 7 Home Premium & Dell’s new Stage interface, the $550 netvertible`s the potential to successfully straddle both the netbook & tablet world. It also`s the real shot @ be`g the perfect device 4 those waver`g between buy`g the netbook & the tablet. Indeed, the Duo`s filled to the brim w/ potential, although (unless) what’s the th`g really like to use? We’ve spent the last few days w/ the Duo (and its Duo Audio Station) to find out, so hit the break 4 the official Engadget review! NoMute reclaims iPad orientation lock in iOS 4.2, although (unless) only if U jailbreak

If you’ve yet to upgrade your iPad to iOS 4.2.1, & you’re head-over-heels w/ your orientation lock, you’ve got 2 options: upgrade & lose Z functionality altogether, or upgrade / jailbreak & get it back. Naturally, we’d recommend the latter. In what can only B described as “so typically Apple,” the software engineers @ Cupertino figured Z they’d convert the perfectly acceptable orientation lock switch into the mute switch. V lamented this fact in our review of the update, although (unless) rather than Apple creat`g (non-fiddly) alternatives within its software, we’re left to look 4 the solution in the jailbreaker’s app store. NoMute`s just emerged under the BigBoss repository in Cydia, promis`g to reclaim the switch you’ve already become accustomed to using. Infinitec Infinite USB Memory Drive review

The idea behind Infinitec’s Infinite USB Memory Drive`s actually quite straightforward, although (unless) we’ve found Z when V tell friends & acquaintances about the unit, it often boggles their minds. So, we’ll try to keep it real simple: This red plastic stick`s the 802.11b/g/n WiFi radio disguised as the USB flash drive . & when V say “disguised”, we’re not just talk`g about the stick’s size, although (unless) its functionality as well — it lets U wirelessly transfer files direct from from your WiFi-equipped laptop’s hard drive to just about anyth`g w/ the USB port. Stick it into an Xbox 360 or PS3 & it pretends to B your average thumbdrive, although (unless) w/ access to theoretically anyth`g U choose. Canon PowerShot G12 scores predictably glow`g review

If it’s the pocketable PowerShot & its name begins w/ ‘G’ U can B pretty sure it’ll B the good performer, & Canon ‘s latest`s no exception. The $499 G12`s the sequential successor to the G11 and, as`s typical 4 the range, it isn’t the revolutionary leap forward. The G12 makes use of its predecessor’s 10 megapixel sensor situated behind the same 5x zoom lens & offer`g the same suite of full manual controls. New this year`s the 720p24 video record`g mode w/ stereo mics, finally bring`g this camera into the HD age — although (unless) sadly do`g so without use of Z zoom. Also new`s an HDR mode, stitch`g together 3 photos to make those vampires hid`g in the shadows really pop. Canon’s 60D impresses reviewers, although (unless) the challenger approaches (video)

Canon’s prosumer line just got the little better, w/ the 18 megapixel, 1080p record`g 60D hitt`g stores and, now, gett`g recommended reviews. Photo Blog & Camera Labs`ve weighed in so far, & both`ve positive conclusions, most notably regard`g Z movie mode. The camera`ll kindly record in 1080p24 in addition to 1080p30, although (unless) the autofocus while film`g`s panned, called “fairly useless” thanks to only happen`g when U half-press the shutter button, & then tak`g the few seconds to figure things out — although (unless) that’s just like the EOS 7D & T2i . Overall the 60D scores highly & easily bests the 50D it replaces, although (unless) the real competition`s Nikon’s D7000 , which interestingly`s bust`g out @ retail already, offer`g the similar price point, similar capabilities, & the magnesium alloy chassis, versus the plastic 1 on the Canon. T-Mobile G2 review

It’s`en the long road to the T-Mobile G2 (and this review). Just 2 years ago, Android made its entrance into the smartphone market w/ the G1 , the partnership w/ the fourth-place carrier, & the lot of promises about keep`g things open. Since then we’ve seen the likes of the Droid family, Google’s Nexus 1 , & the powerhouses Z R the Samsung Galaxy S line — to name the few. Yes, the Android landscape`s become more than just the little crowded. although (unless) of those many, there R few who leap beyond what we’ve come to expect from the Google-backed enterprise into the realm of the top tier. 4 all the Android devices U can purchase, only the few rise above the noise. @ the glance, the G2 looks like 1 of those handsets — designed & manufactured by HTC (and known as the Desire Z in Europe), outfitted w/ the (nearly) stock build of Android 2.2, & equipped w/ T-Mobile’s new HSPA+, which the carrier claims can offer network speeds nearly equivalent to 4G.

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes says Apple’s 99-cent rental model threatens sales

Well, this isn’t go`g to B surpris`g to many, although (unless) certain executives of certain big studios & networks aren’t wast`g anytime lett`g everybody know what they think of Apple’s new 99-cent rental model 4 the Apple TV . If you’ve read our review of the tiny new iOS device, you’re already aware Z 1 of Apple’s biggest challenges w/ the product`s gett`g the content providers on board 4 such the reduced price — so far, the company’s managed to pull in ABC, Disney, Fox, & the BBC — although (unless) Jobs`s said Z studios`ll quickly “see the light” & join up. Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes seems to disagree, however. “How can U justify rent`g your first-run TV shows individually 4 99 cents an episode & thereby jeopardize the sale of the same shows as the series to branded networks Z pay hundreds of millions of dollars & make those shows available to loyal viewers 4 free?” Bewkes recently asked, join`g the now grow`g chorus of executives to decry the new scheme. Corsair’s ear-straddl`g HS1 headset earns high marks in early reviews

U`d to know Z Corsair wouldn’t stride into the new product category w/ just so-so hardware. Its new HS1 gam`g headset`s`en sent out to the couple of UK reviewers & the feedback`s`en overwhelmingly positive. Both Hexus & Bit-tech praised the circumaural (made to fit around, rather than on top of, your ears) design 4 its weight distribution & memory foam-assisted comfort, while also giv`g the thumbs up to sound quality. Bass reproduction`s said to B somewhat weaker than desirable, although (unless) the bundled software gives U plenty of adjustment options. It’s the shame Z you’ll`ve to install the drivers in order to avoid the in-line remote control blink`g madly @ you, & it’s also not too awesome Z U won’t B able to use the mic on the Mac, although (unless) so long as these vices don’t bother U unduly, U`ldfind the $99 investment in an HS1 set more than worth it. Another contender`s entered the fray in the great tablet wars of 2010. It’s the $500 Olive Telecom OlivePad, the seven-inch, 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreened device. Announced back in July , Indian television show TechGuru snagged 1 4 review the few weeks back where they, predictably, squared it off against an iPad . The Android 2.1 device looks nice enough, but, accord`g to the translation recently provided by Netbooknews , doesn’t compare to Apple’s device in terms of visual appeal. It is, @ least, the licensed version of Android, w/ access to the Market & the standard Google apps, all of which look to run very well on its 600MHz ARM CPU. 512MB of internal memory`s paired w/ 512MB of ROM, naturally w/ microSD expansion. There`s also the 3 megapixel camera on the back & the SIM slot not only provid`g wireless data although (unless) also enabl`g phone calls — though we’d advise tak`g advantage of the device’s Bluetooth capabilities to avoid hold`g this chubby slate to your head. Epic 4G review

Of the seemingly countless variants of the Galaxy S Z Samsung’s in the process of deploy`g around the globe, 1 stands out in the couple very unique (and important) ways: Sprint’s Epic 4G . The Epic hangs on to the couple of the Galaxy line’s most important characteristics — namely the 1GHz Hummingbird processor & the 4-inch Super AMOLED display — although (unless) adds in the slid`g landscape QWERTY keyboard, support 4 the wickedly fast WiMAX network Z Sprint shares w/ partner Clearwire, & the handful of other notable one-off customizations. We’ve already taken the look @ 2 of the other US-bound Galaxy S models — AT&T’s Captivate & T-Mobile’s Vibrant — although (unless) it shouldn’t take more than the quick glance @ the Epic to tell U Z this`s the very, very different beast. Becom`g just the 2nd WiMAX phone released in the States (and the 1st w/ the physical keyboard), this`s the pretty critical release 4 Sprint @ the time when its subscriber count`s just start`g to pick up after several quarters of decline — & mak`g things even more interest`g`s the fact Z Sprint’s 1st WiMAX handset — HTC’s EVO 4G –`s simply 1 of the best phones we’ve ever reviewed. App review: The Incident

Like its contemporary, Canabalt , The Incident`s the game Z knows exactly what it`s — and`s not — & plays to those strengths to the T. The basic premise of this iPhone title`s simple enough, & in Z simplicity (as w/ many great games) lies its power. U R Frank Solway, the lone man involved in the day Z`s gone completely out of whack — namely, objects`ve begun fall`g from the sky, & U need to get out of the way. That’s it. That’s the whole game. U dash & jump while all manner of items come hurtl`g towards U from above; Mini Coopers, Ikea bookshelves, bikes, fences, arcade cabinets… really just about anyth`g U can think of. Your goal`s to avoid what’s com`g next (teased by the flash`g white strip along the top of the screen), grab the variety of power-ups Z happen by, & keep gett`g as high as U can to reach checkpoints.

Accord`g to Review Horizon, however, the official release date`s July 19th, although it seems possible U could receive it before then if you’ve already pre-ordered the device or get your order in soon. Consumer Reports confirms iPhone 4 antenna problems — & so do we

Although there’s never`en any question Z there’s someth`g go`g on w/ the iPhone 4′s fancy new antenna system, V really haven’t seen any rigorous test`g confirm`g Z the issue`s real, severe, & affects every phone. Z just changed: Consumer Reports tested 3 iPhone 4s & several other AT&T phones in their RF isolation chamber Z simulates vary`g levels of signal from every carrier, & found Z the iPhone 4`s the only handset to suffer signal-loss issues. What’s more, CR directly says Z its findings call Apple’s explanation of the miscalculated signal meter into question since the tests “indicate Z AT&T’s network might not B the primary suspect.” CR found Z simply putt`g duct tape over the bottom-left corner`s enough to alleviate the issue — we’re guess`g that’s Jony Ive’s worst nightmare — & says Z while the iPhone 4`s the “sharpest display & best video camera” of any phone its tested, it simply can’t recommend the device until Apple comes up w/ the permanent & free fix to the antenna problem. Ouch. Of course, V couldn’t sit around wait`g 4 someone else to test the iPhone 4 in the more controlled way, so V actually asked our good friend Erica Sadun from TUAW to write us the bespoke signal strength app 4 iOS 4. Obviously V couldn’t submit it to the App Store, although (unless) we’ve`en runn`g it on all of our phones here @ Engadget & V can independently confirm Consumer Reports ‘ find`g Z there’s the serious signal attenuation issue w/ the iPhone 4′s antenna — every phone we’ve tested displays dropped signal when held w/ the bottom left corner covered. Now, what V don’t know`s whether Z signal attenuation consistently affects call quality & data rates, which V suspect`s more directly related to the network in the area; some of our iPhone 4s drop calls & experience low data rates w/ alarm`g frequency, while others — like our review unit –`ve almost never dropped the call & have`d no data problems. However, now Z we’ve confirmed & clarified Z the antenna issue affects every iPhone 4, V can take on the next step, which`s sort`g out exactly when & where the issue`s most severe.
