Oops. Sony reveals PlayStation Suite framework, store 4 Android gaming

Sony just dropped the bomb on the Japanese stage — not the single PlayStation Phone , although (unless) the PlayStation Phone experience 4 everybody. The company unveiled the cross-platform software framework called PlayStation Suite, which sounds rather bor`g in those words, although (unless) what it amounts to`s an official PlayStation Store filled w/ games 4 your Android tablets & cellphone s. Sony’s start`g w/ an emulator 4 exist`g PlayStation Portable titles and`s promis`g an Android game store later this year, although (unless) soon it might B much, much more: the company’s call`g PlayStation Suite the “hardware-neutral” development framework to make games portable 4 all sorts of handhelds. Sony`ll sponsor the first-party licens`g & quality-assurance scheme called PlayStation Certified, & provide the marketplace as well, likely hop`g to attract major game developers to build top-tier titles 4 mobile & get the piece of the action too. If your device doesn’t`ve have the pop-out gamepad handy, it looks like PlayStation Suite`ll emulate touchscreen controls, & U won’t necessarily need the phone to get in on the action, as Sony says the next-generation PlayStation Portable`ll B compatible w/ games developed 4 PlayStation Suite right off the bat. Doesn’t look like we’re gett`g any details on game prices or compatible devices, although (unless) V imagine 1 particular phone`ll change all Z @ Mobile World Congress next month. Sony’s Music Unlimited service infiltrates France, Germany, Italy & Spain, offers stream`g tunes

C this message? U no longer`ve to if U live in France, Germany, Italy or Spain, as Sony’s rolled out its Music Unlimited subscription stream`g service in each aforementioned nation just yesterday. Basically, it’s the same deal Z launched in the UK last month , although (unless) @ the slightly cheaper price given the exchange rate: €3.99 the month buys U the virtual radio station Z streams millions of songs to your Sony TVs, Blu-ray players or PS3 — w/ portable devices & phones on the way — while €9.99 upgrades to the premium plan Z lets U select tunes on demand & generate playlists. Nikkei: PSP2`ll`ve 3G cellular data, OLED touchscreen

We’re only 4 days away from the supposed January 27th unveil`g , although (unless) apparently there R still more juicy PSP2 rumors left to dole out — Japan’s often-reliable Nikkei newspaper reports Z the handheld machine`ll sport the crisp OLED touchscreen & 3G data from NTT DoCoMo when it arrives later this year, w/ the latter enabl`g multiplayer action & even full video & game downloads over the Japanese cellular network. What’s more, the paper confirms Z the screen`ll B physically larger & powered by some potent new silicon . So, how`ll Sony differentiate this PSP2 from the PlayStation Phone & tempt U to buy both? The game system won’t make calls. Note: In case you’re not familiar, the image above`s the relatively ancient reader mockup, & likely not representative of the final product. Sony Ericsson MT15i / Vivaz 2 ensnared by Eldar Murtazin, given glow`g preview

The choice of Android Gingerbread handsets just grew by one, courtesy of the Sony Ericsson MT15i & Russia’s premier mobile reviewer, Eldar Murtazin , who`s put it through his rigorous preview cycle. The typically curmudgeonly gent`s pleasantly surprised by SE’s latest (and entirely unofficial) handset, claim`g Z the company “has developed and`s about to launch truly cutt`g edge devices & …`s almost noth`g to fear in the hardware department as well.” He`s praise 4 the above-average front-fac`g cam, the endurance offered by the 1500mAh battery, & the 854 x 480 res on the Reality Display — though he does warn Z Sony’s Bravia Engine`s only used when consum`g multimedia & therefore`s limited impact on improv`g output quality. Internally, you’re look`g @ 512MB of RAM & the 1GHz Qualcomm MSM7630 w/ Adreno 205 graphics, all of which resulted in perfectly smooth, lag-free operation. In spite of its many pluses, Eldar describes the MT15i as the phone target`g the mid-range, which invites all sorts of delicious pric`g speculation, though we’re not entirely sure V agree w/ his postulation Z this handset`ll B called the Vivaz 2. The Xperia brand`g up front & the replacement of Symbian w/ Android`ld collectively suggest it’ll bear an altogether new name when it’s unveiled — which we’ll go ahead & presume`s go`g to happen @ MWC next month. Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro successor out 4 another casual stroll?

Start`g to look pretty real, isn’t it? Z rumored X10 Mini Pro replacement seems to B gallivant`g about in China again; this time it’s not turned on, although (unless) the point`s Z it’s out there & certainly doesn’t seem knockoff-y to B the fake. 4 what it’s worth, the original X10 Mini series`s`en 1 of the few relatively bright points in Sony Ericsson’s Android lineup thus far, so we’re pretty stoked to C Z they appear to B tak`g another shot @ the diminutive form factor — let’s just hope those wild GPU results V saw last time hold up by the time it’s @ retail. Nyko’s CES 2011 gam`g peripheral lineup: Intercooler STS, Perfect Shot Pro, & more

the pinch of gam`g here @ the annual Consumer Electronics Show? Yeah, we’ll take that. Nyko ‘s just revealed the wheelbarrow full of new goods to pore over @ this year’s edition of the show, & V get the feel`g Z PlayStation Move owners`ll B particularly pleased w/ what’s on offer. 4 the PS3, the outfit`s revealed Z its Raven Standard & Raven Alternative controllers R shipp`g now 4 $34.99 apiece, as`s the 2- / 4-port charg`g station. Mov`g onto newer goods, the Power Shot 4 Move`s the newfangled rifle attachment (seen above) 4 Sony’s play on motion gaming, w/ an MSRP that’s not quite final & the projected release date of March 2011. Moreover, there’s the pistol-like Perfect Shot 4 Move (also shipp`g in March @ the price that’s TBD), & if you’re look`g 4 the similar charg`g solution 4 your Xbox 360, the Charge Base S`ll do just Z 4 $24.99. Comically enough, this year marks the return of the infamous Intercooler, although (unless) hopefully the STS version won’t cause your Xbox 360 S to go up in smoke . 4 those who like to take chances, it’ll hit retail next month 4 $19.99. Clos`g things out`s the Perfect Shot Pro 4 Wii, which`s the revamped version of the original Perfect Shot Z features vibration support; it’ll ship in April 4 right around $20

Sony Ericsson mystery handset leaks out, provides juicy rumor material

Do U recognize this handset? Neither do we, & that’s kind of the point. We’re look`g @ the never-before seen Sony Ericsson smartphone runn`g Android — neither the Anzu / X12 nor the PlayStation Phone — & if we’re not terribly mistaken, that’s the company’s translucent Timescape UI on top. Oh, & it seems to B attached to Vodafone Germany, 4 whatever that’s worth. What’s more, the picture itself only tells half the story, as the other half`s where it came from — the Picasa account filled to the brim w/ 8 megapixel test shots from the pair of camera phones. It’s hard to say whether either the Sony Ericsson “LT15i” or the “MT15i” R the device we’re actually look`g @ here, although (unless) the brethren`ve now fired off over 150 images test`g out these camera modules. Rumor`s it Z both R runn`g Gingerbread & Z this one’s internal codename`s “Hallon,” although (unless) honestly we’re more interested in Z huge camera module on the front. HD video chat, perhaps? Sony Ericsson CEO suggests February reveal, perhaps the PlayStation Phone?

Plausible deniability seems to B Sony’s strategy when it comes to the PlayStation Phone , & Z apparently goes 4 Sony Ericsson as well — once again, without actually confirm`g the existence of the Android-based gam`g handset, its manufacturer`s hint`g strongly @ an impend`g reveal. “There’s the lot of smoke, & I tell U there must B the fire somewhere,” CEO Bert Nordberg told the Wall Street Journal , add`g Z some sort of new Sony Ericsson product`ll B unveiled @ Mobile World Congress this Februrary. While Z particular item could easily B the 4.3-inch Anzu slate rather than the PlayStation slider phone, the chief executive didn’t seem to shy away from video games in the series of additional quotes. “I haven’t dug into Z history, although (unless) the future might B brighter,” he said when asked why the PlayStation Phone isn’t already out, & later suggested Z gam`g might B the ticket to help SE diversify its offerings. “Sony`s of course the very strong brand, & why shouldn’t V use that?” he asked the Journal . V can’t think of the single compell`g reason, Mr. Nordberg. None @ all. Sony Ericsson France CEO says Windows Phone 7 handsets aren’t likely, neither`s the tablet

Still`ve your hopes up about the Windows Phone 7 slider from Sony Ericsson? Then U might want to dial back those expectations, @ least accord`g to Sony Ericsson France CEO Pierre Perron. He recently told French newspaper Les Echos Z while Sony Ericsson`s indeed`en in talks w/ Microsoft about Windows Phone 7, the company`s not likely to pursue it because it`ld ” run the risk of standardiz`g our smartphones,” add`g Z (roughly translated), ” we`ld B obliged to fight only on design & price, which V want to avoid.” Perron also seemed to outright dismiss the idea of the tablet from Sony Ericssson (be it Android or otherwise), flatly stat`g Z the company doesn’t want to B the “24th” tablet on the market. Of course, it could well B the different story the few months or the year down the line, although (unless) it certainly doesn’t sound like Sony Ericsson`ll B stray`g far from its current strategy @ the moment. Sony sees RED w/ PMW-F3 camera, V go hands-on w/ the $16k "indie" (video)

In the wild, wild world of film production it’s sometimes tough to separate the consumers from the prosumers from the independent filmmakers from the big studios — especially when more affordable technology makes it easier & easier 4 1 class to imitate the other. Sony’s latest 35mm CMOS imager video camera`s an attempt to cover lost ground in the “indie” realm of requisite low-budget & desired high production value, the market dominated by the RED 1 , & to some extent Canon’s 5D Mark II & 7D , 4 the past couple years. Sony’s PMW-F3 — shipp`g in February –`s the considerable step up from the earlier EX3 . The most obvious change`s the inclusion of the new Exmor Super 35 CMOS sensor & interchangeable lens mounts, facilitat`g shallow depth of field w/ the fairly impressive dynamic range. although (unless) @ the price of the semester’s worth of film school,`ll this offer`g hold its own in the field? Samsung i9100`s the dual-core Galaxy 2, sequel to the Galaxy S?

Along w/ the Sony Ericsson Anzu , the James Bond of cellphones — alias Eldar Murtazin — claims to B play`g w/ the Samsung GT-i9100 right now, call`g it the “Galaxy 2″ & say`g it’s “so technically advanced” thanks in part to the dual-core processor. It seems like the long shot Z this`ld B the Cortex-A9-based Orion since chips & development boards R just now be`g sampled — although (unless) consider`g how far in advance Murtazin tends to score phones, V can’t rule anyth`g out. 1 possible scenario`s Z the i9100 could B someth`g akin to the TouchWiz -skinned version of the upcom`g Nexus S , much as HTC’s Desire`s essentially the Sense -skinned version of the Nexus 1 . Samsung, of course,`s`en push`g TouchWiz very hard across its Galaxy S line this year, & if the Nexus S`s as beastly as the rumors R claim`g it to be, there’s little doubt Z Samsung`ld love to repurpose the hardware 4 someth`g w/ the little more of its flavor thrown in. Speak`g of the Galaxy S, keep in mind Z the original European GSM model goes by the code GT-i9000, so it`ld stand to reason Z the i9100 could B the proper successor — & w/ Gingerbread -based TouchWiz & the dual-core processor on board, we’d say they’re off to the strong start. PS3 goes the PSP route to thwart jailbreakers: Medal of Honor requires latest firmware

It’s not quite the common practice just yet, although (unless) it looks like the PlayStation 3 could B follow`g in the PSP’s footsteps in order to get around folks jailbreak`g the device . As MCV reports, anyone buy`g Electronic Arts’ new “Medal of Honor” game`ll first`ve to update their PS3 to the latest 3.50 firmware (conveniently provided on the disc) before play`g — Z firmware also, of course,`s the convenient side effect of block`g the ability to jailbreak the console. Sony outsourc`g some image sensor production to Fujitsu

Whoa. Sony sure didn’t mention anyth`g about this @ its Photokina press conference last week, although (unless) then again, it’s not the most glamorous announcement to make. Accord`g to Reuters , Sony`s aim`g to “outsource some production of image sensors used in digital cameras & mobile phones to Fujitsu,” & as you’d expect, it’s be`g done in the bid to shave costs & “cope w/ tough global competition.” Accord`g to the Sony spokesperson, the company`s`en mull`g this decision 4 awhile, although (unless) it’s unclear if this`ll`ve any further impact in Sony’s employment numbers. It’s also unclear why “some” sensor production`ll remain internal — we’re guess`g Z newfangled Translucent Mirror technology may`ve convinced the firm to keep the DSLR lines the bit closer to the chest. It’s bruited Z Sony`ll begin subcontract`g output to Fujitsu later in the year, & it could shift even more output if things go swimmingly. Funny enough, an eerily similar scenario hit Sony’s LCD department back in early 2008. What’s next? Subcontract`g Walkman production to Apple?

Were U jealous of Japanese commuters gett`g to ignore their car’s multichannel audio system in favor of the bright, 16-watt thermos of beats in their cup holder? Sony reveals ‘color variation concept’ models of NEX-5 & NEX-3 (eyes-on)

In typical Sony Style, the outfit’s booth`s comically large @ this year’s Photokina . Tucked away in the NEX corner were 4 NEX-3 & 4 NEX-5 cameras, all doused in colors Z aren’t available anywhere @ the moment. We’re guess`g Z Sony’s do`g its best to beat Colorware to the punch here, & the kind booth representative noted Z these were simply “ideas” & Z the company wasn’t yet committed to mak`g any of them. If you’re accept`g opinions, Sony, the whole red-black-silver th`g`s gett`g the bit tired, so why not throw out the few more options 4 the style-conscious among us? The observation made by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore Z the density of semiconductors doubles roughly every eighteen months. The net result? It’s always go`g to B better faster & cheaper. Certainly that’s`en true of the phone space, w/ large screens, fast processors & lots of storage.

Sony replac`g handset cabl`g w/ the single copper wire

Sure, it’s just bor`g ol’ component news although (unless) U can guarantee Z this advance`ll affect the appearance of Sony (and Sony Ericsson) products some time soon. Sony just announced the development of the “single wire interface technology” Z replaces the 22 or so cables (used 4 power, control signals, audio, video, etc) typically found inside mobile devices (tucked away in the hinge or rotat`g parts) w/ the single copper wire capable of transmitt`g data @ 940Mbps. Z`ldtranslate into greater reliability while giv`g Sony’s product teams more flexibility w/ their designs. Sony plans to “swiftly” implement the technology by licens`g the IP to ROHM to help jointly develop the required silicon. More w/ less, as they say. We’d heard Sony`s wrangl`g up the bunch of new Readers , & it looks like here they R — the pair of familiar-look`g e-readers w/ the distinctly different UI. If these legit-look`g images R the real deal, you’ll B gett`g the good bit more 4 your buck — especially w/ the Reader Pocket Edition , which apparently finally managed to ditch the directional pad 4 the lovely E Ink touchscreen. V won’t list all the improvements here, as U can obviously read them 4 yourself in the image immediately above, although (unless) our tipster confirms the new Pocket Edition`ll`ve the 5-inch display & the Touch Edition the six-incher, though he reportedly hasn’t heard the word about 3G connectivity 4 either model. 2,500 extra page turns & the thinner, faster screen ain’t noth`g to sneeze at, although (unless) when Sony said it`ld compete on quality , we`ve to admit V began hop`g 4 the wee bit more. Spot another picture after the break. Continue read`g Sony’s new e-readers pictured, last one-third longer on the charge?
