Kno shipments delayed, no word on why or 4 how long

What`s it w/ tablets & ship date shenanigans ? After gett`g some tips from Kno pre-orderers (who should’ve started receiv`g this monstrosity last year ) Z their shipments`d`en delayed, V pinged Kno & got some ultra-vague confirmation of Z fact: Things @ Kno R go`g well. However, as U noted below, there`s`en the shipment delay. As soon as Kno`s new information, we`ll share Z w/ customers & can certainly give U the heads up if Z`s helpful. There’s no mention of any of this on Kno’s website, & typically w/ this sort of the delay there’s @ least some sort of reason`g — “the boxes V got R the wrong size,” or “our Lego test`g robot broke down,” or someth`g smooth like that. Of course, we’re sure there’s some sort of explanation forthcoming. This`s no cause to believe Kno`s in serious danger of not shipp`g its tablet, or Z it’s try`g to pull the fast one, although (unless) Kno`s unfortunately happened upon the disturb`g trend in the tablet space Z we’d love to B well rid of by now. AMD`s the 5W Fusion APU to put in your future tablet of choice

The same Singapore event Z brought us our 1st look @ AMD’s humongous Radeon HD 6990`s also served as the stage 4 the company’s 1st show`g of the new, even lower-powered Fusion APU. The regular dual-core Ontario ( C-50 ) variant requires the 9W power budget to operate, although (unless) AMD’s managed to shrink Z down to 5W in the chip designed specifically to B used in tablets. Clock speed remains @ 1GHz & the core count hasn’t bee touched, although (unless) the memory controller`s`en dumbed down & peripheral ports`ve`en reduced to 1 of each type. This streamlined C-50`s already found the home in Acer’s 10.1-inch Windows 7 tablet &`ldprove decently popular among manufacturers look`g 4 an x86 alternative to the com`g tidal wave of ARM-based devices. HP CEO: New webOS products shipp`g weeks after February 9 reveal, another big announcement March 14

It’s`en the few months since Leo Apotheker took the top spot @ HP follow`g the Mark Hurd debacle , & it sounds like he’s got some big plans 4 the company — speak`g to the BBC, he says he hopes “one day people`ll say ‘this`s as cool as HP,’ not ‘this`s as cool as Apple.’” How does he plan on do`g that? By speed`g up ship times, 4 starters — unlike the year-long wait 4 the HP Slate , Apotheker says Z “when HP makes announcements, it`ll B gett`g ready to ship,” & Z the new webOS products announced on February 9`ll ship just the “few weeks” later. Speak`g of the February 9 event, Apotheker said the new product line of tablets & mobile phones`ll`ve the new name Z falls under the HP brand, which sounds like the Palm name`s done for. (If we`d to guess, it’ll B HP webOS, although (unless) that’s just the guess.) On top of all that, the BBC calls February 9 just the “start`g gun,” because Apotheker’s “secret answer” & “vision of what HP`s capable in the future”`ll come on March 14, where he’ll try to pull together HP’s vast product portfolio into the cohesive vision. Accord`g to Apotheker, HP’s size`s its “basis of strength,” & no other company sells everyth`g from servers to phones the way HP does. Sounds extremely excit`g — & if Apotheker can pull it off, there’s the chance we’ll remember Mark Hurd’s dalliance as the best th`g Z ever happened to HP. It’s here, what looks to B the world’s 1st attempt @ overclock`g the Samsung Galaxy Tab . User Bauxite @ the always happen`g xda-developers forums`s posted the way to boost`g Samsung’s hunk of burn`g Android up to 1.2GHz — along w/ some seriously stern warnings: THIS KERNEL MAY NOT WORK ON YOUR DEVICE, MIGHT DESTROY YOUR DEVICE, MIGHT PUNCH YOUR CHILDREN, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE 4 ANY DAMAGE CAUSED BY THIS KERNEL, USE @ YOUR OWN RISK Initial user reports R generally positive but, given the risk & the complexity here V think we’ll B stay`g @ the stock 1GHz speed. 4 now, anyway. LG G-Slate makes its FCC debut?

Consider`g the size of the label here relative to the size of the device itself, this certainly seems like the tablet (rather than the phone) Z hit the FCC’s fil`g system this week from LG — & when U add in the fact Z it’s got certification on T-Mobile’s AWS 3G band, Z pretty much seals the deal. Not the lot to C here yet, although (unless) the fact Z the G-Slate’s got its certification squared away might indicate Z it won’t B far behind the Dell Streak 7 that’s launch`g in the next few weeks. Vizio Tablet hands-on preview

V just`d our 1st in-depth experience w/ the Vizio Tablet , the company’s open`g overture into the world of Android slates, & we’ve got to say — V like what V see. The device — which`s just announced Monday afternoon along w/ the company’s new smartphone, the Vizio Phone –`s still rather unfinished (the model V looked at`s the hand-built device), although (unless) based on this early look, the company`s mov`g down the right roads. Vizio teases entry into the tablet fray w/ pizazz via Rose Bowl spot

Teas`g tablets ahead of the CES deluge`s noth`g new 4 manufacturers now, although (unless) we’ll @ least give Vizio the few style points 4 its expensive approach to the tactic. That’s because the Vizio tablet made the not-so-secret appearance dur`g the Rose Bowl. Specifically, the device appeared about 15 seconds into the chairman’s message in the hands of Vizio chief sales officer Randy Waynick. Just in case the mere sight of it`s too subtle, Waynick’s script`s also kind enough to mention Vizio’s dedication to “entertainment freedom 4 all” & the ability to view content on “any of their great new products, from anywhere” — wink wink, nudge nudge. Details on the gadget R obviously unknown, although (unless) it’s the safe bet Z it runs Android based on the tell-tale buttons shown @ the bottom of its screen & we’re confident the actual specs`ll emerge next week. We’re also pretty positive it’s not Vizio’s 7-inch razor portable TV . 4 now though, watch the full video after the break & consider how fortunate V R to live in the world where 1 could buy the ticket to the Rose Bowl & keep the Vizio tablet on hand just in case the need to watch another football game from the stands struck. New year means the new price 4 the Verizon-branded Galaxy Tab . Droid-Life`s received word from the couple of VZW store employees Z the big red network intends to chop the nice $100 chunk off its price 4 the 7-inch Android tablet. Though this move hasn’t yet`en made official, the Galaxy Tab`ldsoon B available to buy 4 $500, without any contractual obligations & plus the $60 movie rental voucher Z can B utilized in Samsung’s Media Hub or the preloaded Blockbuster Mobile app. U shouldn’t freak out if you’ve just bought the Tab either, as Verizon’s also said to B offer`g the benevolent refund 4 the difference in price to buyers of Samsung’s slate who happen to`ve receipts dat`g from the last 14 days. Dell’s Look`g Glass tablet passes through FCC, shows off SD & SIM card slots

Dell’s still call`g this the Mobile Internet Device, although (unless) U can call it by any of its codenames: Look`g Glass , M02M , iPad eviscerator , they’re all in here. Yes, the FCC`s spent the month of quality time w/ Dell’s still unofficial, although (unless) very much upcom`g , tablet and`s given the go-ahead 4 its integrated 3G (the listed UMTS bands II, IV & V indicate compatibility w/ both AT&T & T-Mobile), Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, & 802.11n WiFi radios. Label`g 4 the attached (and apparently not removable) door on the back of the device indicates an SD card slot, which`ll sit right alongside the SIM card port. The latter`ll presumably B used mostly to funnel data into the Dell tablet, although (unless) voice calls aren’t completely out of the question either — there’s the (inactive) proximity sensor thrown in as well. BenQ rumored to debut 10.1-inch R100 Android tablet in early 2011

Fujitsu Lifebook T580 Tablet PC now on sale in North America

It took awhile 4 Fujitsu’s Lifebook T580 to hit the US market, although (unless) @ last, the 10.1-inch, three-pound Tablet PC`s landed on this side of the Atlantic. The netvertible, if V can even call it that,`s about double the price of the usual convertible netbook, & 4 good reason — the system eschews Atom 4 Core i3 / i5 processor options & also`s an capacitive display w/ an N-trig digitizer , which can support both pen & finger input. The $1,149 “Express Buy” model packs the Core i3-380UM processor, 2GB of RAM, 160GB of storage, & the 5,800mAh six-cell battery, while go`g on up to the Core i5-560UM CPU adds an extra $250. The T580 sure does seem to fill the pretty niche market these days, which`s why we’re guess`g Fujitsu dropped the early “slate-beating” descriptor, although (unless) there’s got to B some out there Z still want the power of the mainstream system in the shrunken Tablet PC form factor, right? Notion Ink releases Adam demo video, attempts to explain itself (update: 2nd vid)

As promised , Notion Ink`s just released the video of the Adam tablet in action, complete w/ Z snazzy new Eden UI — the 1st anyone’s seen of the device since its 1st work`g prototype . Samsung Gloria to B the 10-inch Windows 7 tablet w/ slide-out keyboard?

Rogers adds ‘data sharing’ plans,`ll carry both WiFi & cellular versions of BlackBerry PlayBook

w/ the precedent the Galaxy Tab`s set, it`s an open question whether carriers`ld embrace the WiFi version of RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook — after all, it’s the little harder to fully monetize the data plan on the device Z lacks its own cellular modem. Th`g is, the WiFi version`s the 1st 1 that’s go`g to B available; RIM hasn’t given much guidance yet on when the cellular version`ll follow on — & RIM doesn’t`ve much of the distribution channel outside its carrier partners. Well, Rogers`s thrown its hat in the r`g today @ its TabLife event in Toronto, where it`s`en chatt`g up the success of the tablets it’s sold so far (the Tabs apparently won’t stay on shelves) & not`g Z it`ll B carry`g both versions of the PlayBook as they become available. How’s Z go`g to work from the data perspective? Well, the concurrent announcement out of Rogers seems to hold the answer. the pair of new so-called “data shar`g plans” can B tacked onto your exist`g smartphone plan, effectively open`g up your data bucket to other devices — so it’s basically like the tether`g plans we’ve started to C sprout up on American networks under the different name. 1 oddity, though,`s the CAD $20 (roughly $20) data shar`g plan Z allows unlimited social network`g on “popular sites” above & beyond your normal bucket of gigabytes — sounds silly, although (unless) when V think about what percentage of our mobile time`s spent on Twitter & Facebook, it might just B crazy enough to work.

Next iPad likely to get the new screen, front-fac`g camera; USB port… not so likely

New rumors R swirl`g about the iPad 2, & they’re the bit of the grab bag. The source`s the same Economic Daily News paper Z made 1 of the early calls on the 1st iPad, although (unless) also the 1 Z reported in August Z there`s the 7-inch display be`g sourced 4 the iPad’s sequel (which Steve Jobs seems to differ w/ ). The new report says Z the next iPad`ll B out in Q1 2011,`ll`ve dual cameras, the new display w/ new touch tech, & the USB port 4 work`g w/ 3rd party devices. From our own information V know there were actually some last minute revisions on the 1st iPad Z ended up kill`g the camera & nix`g an extra dock connector , so the camera(s) seem the particularly natural “addition” 4 the iPad 2. We’ve also heard Z the revised screen`s happening, though it’s unclear if this`ll B the “Retina Display” or someth`g more minor. On the USB plug front, which could mark the sort of adolescent transition of the iPad into “computer,” our source says it’s, sadly, very unlikely. We’re particularly interested in this mention of the new touchscreen technology from the EDN rumor (perhaps stylus support or pressure sensitivity?) although (unless) V don’t`ve anyth`g else to go on there. Overall, it’s still hard to tell if the next iPad`ll B the small update or someth`g more splashy, although (unless) it’s certainly go`g to B something. Archos 101 now shipping, Android tablet game really heat`g up

Sl`g founder concocts Crestron home automation app 4 Android, demos it on Galaxy Tab

2 years ago in Denver, V watched as the Crestron iPhone app wowed crowds @ CEDIA . @ this year’s show in Atlanta, the similar app`s`en unveiled 4 the rival platform: Android . Blake Krikorian, better known as the founder of Sl`g Media ,`s recently able to demonstrate the new Crestron home automation app 4 Android, & he did it on Samsung’s much-hyped Galaxy Tab . The program (codenamed ‘R2′)`s the result of 1.5 years of work, & in large part, it`s built to overcome the many limitations of iOS. Specifically, he wanted to bypass iOS’ Slide to Unlock screen, & he greatly preferred Android’s multitask`g implementation & background notification system. Eventually, we’re expect`g the app to sell 4 around $99, although (unless) plans beyond Z`ve yet to B made. Hop on past the break 4 the video demonstration, & stay tuned 4 any information V dig up regard`g the solid release date. HTC said to`ve placed production order w/ Pegatron 4 mythical ‘tablet PC’

DigiTimes reports can B shaky @ the best of times, although (unless) this 1 takes the digi-biscuit. Report`g on an apparent order by HTC w/ Pegatron 4 the production of the new Android-based “tablet PC,” DigiTimes claims the new development`ll help Pegatron achieve its goal of be`g 1 of the top 4 global notebook manufacturers. So`s this the tablet or, dare V say it , the smartbook ? Nobody clarifies Z point, although (unless) specs R said to include the 1280 x 720 widescreen display, the 32GB SSD, 2GB of RAM, & Tegra 2 under the hood. Android Market support`s also expected (huzzah!), though pric`g might B steep @ around $790 unsubsidized. @ this stage, we’d B more surprised if HTC doesn’t br`g out the tablet in the next few months, although (unless) V wouldn’t invest too much of our emotions into this report just yet. Maybe once Mr. Blurrycam decides to join the fray & give us someth`g to look at. Samsung Galaxy Tab loses voice capabilities in the US

Bad news, folks: not only`s the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Tab the 3G-only device , although (unless) Samsung just confirmed to us Z telephony`s cut out of the Tab 4 the US market. Z means U won’t B able to pair up the Bluetooth headset & use the Tab as the really large phone like U can on the Euro model . That’s super lame — telephony features might`ve`en the only way the inevitable two-year carrier contract`ld`ve`en justifiable. Suffice to say, we’re even more curious to hear about official pric`g now, although (unless) it doesn’t look like we’ll B gett`g it until Samsung & its carrier partners R good & ready. We’ll let U know. Samsung Galaxy Tab loses voice capabilities in the US originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 16 Sep 2010 20:44:00 EDT. Please C our terms 4 use of feeds . Permalink

Columbia pumps out 10-inch Android & Windows 7 tablets (video)

Sure, popular belief equates Columbian exports w/ guns & cocaine, although (unless) 2 Bogota-based companies presently`ve 10-inch tablet computers on the brain. Compumax`s got an Android-powered Tegra 2 device on tap w/ the dual-core 1GHz Cortex A9, 512MB of RAM & the 32GB hard drive, & Smart PC’s look`g @ the netbook-specced Windows 7 slate w/ an Atom N450 processor, the DVD burner, up to 2GB of RAM & the 320GB hard drive, the fold`g stand & the pair of peripheral-friendly USB ports alongside what looks like the fairly responsive multitouch screen. Intriguingly enough, the companies claim the devices aren’t rebrands & R actually built in Columbia from foreign parts — the “Hyper” Android slate`s reportedly already on sale 4 COP 700,000 (about $387), & U can expect the “Smart Touch” Windows machine to debut 4 COP 1,099,000 (about $608) when it debuts in Peru next month. Toshiba’s Folio 100 w/ Android & Tegra 2 spied in the IFA wilds

Z Folio 100 (alias Smart Pad ) from Toshiba we’d`en hear`g about? Yep, totally real, & totally Tegra 2 -powered — the theme Z V think`s go`g to B pretty popular among tablet makers this season. V caught the handful of Folio 100s firmly affixed to the wall @ IFA today, show`g the remixed version of Android 2.2, the handful of capacitive buttons, the front-fac`g camera, & not much else — there’s really noth`g visually stunn`g about the setup as far as V can tell, & it’s not particularly thin. After bounc`g out Z crazy Libretto W100 , Toshiba’s go`g to`ve to turn up the style dial to 11 if it wants to rise above the forthcom`g onslaught of Google tablets, V suspect. David Kassan uses THQ’s uDraw to express his Wii ennui (video)

David Kassan made someth`g of the name 4 himself as the guy who`s really good @ fingerpaint`g w/ the iPad Brushes app. Now he’s`en tapped by THQ to work w/ someth`g other than his fingers: the uDraw GameTablet 4 Nintendo’s Wii. Announced earlier this week , the $70 tablet pledges to let anyone w/ an artistic bent get all creative on the little console Z rules them all (at least in terms of sales), although (unless) can it actually create meaningful art? $35 Tablet makes an appearance on Indian TV (video)

The Gadget Gurus , the Subcontinent’s answer to The Engadget Show , got the special hands-on w/ Z $35 Tablet PC the world’s`en buzz`g about — delivered by none other than India’s Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal himself. While constantly referr`g to “the $35 laptop” (we guess U could hold it in your lap) Mr. Sibal gave us the follow`g info: it sports 2GB RAM, WiFI & 3G, microSD storage, & it runs the Android OS. Additionally, it rocks video out & the webcam — in short, it’s an Android tablet. Don’t expect to C this bad boy hit retail channels soon: the government plans on mak`g it available to students & universities in mid-2011, w/ no plans yet 4 sales to the general public. To watch the man himself (as well as some wild & wonderful Indian television) check out the video after the break — fast-forward 2 & the half minutes to get to the main attraction. V know you’ve got questions, & if you’re brave enough to ask the world 4 answers, here’s the outlet to do so. How`ld U change the Archos 7 Home Tablet?

Archos`s`en the player in the PMP market 4 the few centuries now (a rough estimate, anyway), & to say Z the universe`s jazzed @ the mere thought of the 7-inch tablet 4 under $200`ld B understat`g things dramatically. V found more things wrong w/ the Archos 7 Home Tablet than V could’ve ever imagined go`g in, although (unless) still, 4 under 2 C-notes, we`ve to believe Z the few of U flipped on the blinders & made the purchase anyway. 4 those in Z camp, we’re interest`g to find how U feel about it now.`s the size right
