Verizon’s 4G LTE dongles get Mac support in February

Verizon’s LG VL600 LTE modem received the software update today, although (unless) there’s no need to wake your MacBook from its peaceful slumber — there still aren’t any drivers 4 Apple computers, over the month after V were promised the relatively imminent update . Z said, Verizon told PhoneScoop today Z the carrier’s LTE dongles`ll indeed support Apple @ some point next month, which`s itself only days away. Motorola Xoom priced @ $800 @ the minimum, accord`g to Verizon leak

Wow, insider tipsters R gett`g efficient ! Verizon appears to`ve only just added Minimum Advertised Pric`g 4 the Motorola Xoom to its internal systems, although (unless) already it’s`en leaked out by more than 1 source. Android Central`s the damn`g evidence, which lists an $800 levy 4 any prospective owners of the flagship Android Honeycomb device . It’s accompanied by the list`g of the HTC Thunderbolt @ $250, w/ the logical conclusion be`g Z the Moto tablet`ll come unsullied by subsidies while the HTC LTE handset`ll probably cost Z much on the two-year deal. Z makes plenty of sense to us — the typical smartphone price`s $200 & Verizon can point to the 4G goodness the Thunderbolt brings as justify`g its $50 premium, whereas the Xoom’s cost seems to B in line w/ the Galaxy Tab’s pric`g . Verizon officially kills off New Every 2 upgrade discount program

There’s already`en plenty of evidence over the past couple weeks to call this the lock, although (unless) let’s just go ahead & close the loop on this one: Verizon’s official FAQ list`s`en updated to indicate Z its New Every 2 upgrade discount program`s toast. In short, Z means Z new lines of Verizon service won’t B eligible 4 an equipment discount — which used to run between $30 & $100 — after your two-year contract`s up, & folks Z R currently enrolled in an NE2-eligible plan`ll only B able to redeem the discount 1 more time before be`g taken out of it. The move kind of dovetails w/ Verizon’s decision the few months back to bump the smartphone ETF to the groan-induc`g $350, & it seems to B part of the larger industry trend toward mak`g phones wincingly expensive to replace. Don’t drop Z Droid X , folks! LG, ST-Ericsson announce LTE modem chips & modules 4 Verizon

An LTE network’s not much good without some modems able to take advantage of it, & Verizon’s now added the handful of new ones to its 4G option courtesy of LG & ST-Ericsson. LG`s just announced its WM300 LTE module & L2000 modem chip, while ST-Ericsson`s gotten official w/ its M700 LTE modem — all of which R intended 4 use in various, as yet unnamed LTE devices. HTC Thunderbolt w/ LTE 4 Verizon pictured ahead of CES unveiling?

So, Z lovely 4.3-inch LTE smartphone w/ Android 4 Verizon we’ve`en call`g the Mecha & the Droid Incredible HD ? Looks like it might come to market as the Thunderbolt, so says Droid Life — & V tend to put some weight on the rumor consider`g Z they’ve just run twelve leaked shots of the thing. As U can see, this`s clearly Verizon’s head-on answer to the EVO 4G , featur`g similar stylings and, in all likelihood, an LTE modem swapped in 4 the EVO’s WiMAX one. Sure looks like Z “controlled” leak from the few days back, doesn’t it? More on this @ Verizon’s press conference next week, V presume. Samsung LTE phone w/ front-fac`g camera headed to Verizon?

Let’s B real: it`ldcome as little surprise Z Sammy — the company w/ multiple Android phones on Verizon already –`ld B join`g LG , Motorola , & HTC in prepp`g the new model 4 its LTE network . Sure enough, Gizmodo`s scored an alleged shot of said phone, show`g Froyo (Android 2.2.1, to B specific) along w/ the front-fac`g camera & the model number of SCH-i520; it’s said to feature TouchWiz (as most non- Nexus S Android phones from Samsung tend to do) and, fortunately, lacks the B`g integration Z Verizon’s`en push`g on its low- & midrange smartphones lately. Given the company’s iffy track record on gett`g Froyo deployed in the timely manner to the Galaxy S line , we’re not sure how we’d feel about buy`g the new Froyo model when Gingerbread’s now available — especially w/ all these other LTE models Z Verizon’s go`g to`ve on top — although (unless) options R good, V suppose. Verizon bring`g 150/35Mbps internet to FiOS customers, enrag`g customers of all other ISPs

Alas, it looks as if the FiOS rollout`s on an indefinite hold , although (unless) those lucky enough to`ve access`ll soon`ve the ability to upgrade their exist`g internet service to this: the 150/35Mbps option. Verizon adds fewer customers than AT&T in Q3, race 4 1st place gets tight

By subscriber count, Verizon`d vaulted into 1st place by the pretty comfortable margin follow`g its Alltel acquisition , although (unless) AT&T added significantly more customers this last quarter than Big Red did — & just like that, the battle 4 1st place among the US national carriers`s start`g to get hot again. Verizon added 997,000 customers (exclud`g acquisitions) in the July through September period versus AT&T’s beefy 2.6 million, mean`g AT&T now stands @ some 92.8 million — just 400,000 or so fewer Z Verizon’s headcount. Noth`g like an exclusive iPhone launch to give U the little boost, right? On the plus side, Verizon’s postpaid churn in the quarter`s low @ 1.07 percent, & Verizon Communications as the whole earned 31 cents per share — lower than its 2nd quarter pre-adjustment EPS of 58 cents, although (unless) the heck of the lot higher than the 7 cent loss it actually posted in Q2. AT&T likes Google & Verizon’s wired-only net neutrality stance, Time Warner Cable doesn’t

Network neutrality`s the battle to keep companies from filter`g your access to whatever U want on those great, united internets. But, as V explored in depth last week, Google & Verizon think they`ldonly`ve to play nice when it comes to wired broadband — Z wireless`ldB exempt from neutrality-related FCC regulation. The FCC wasn’t too pleased w/ Z sentiment, although (unless) V found someone who is: AT&T VP Joan Marsh, who posted the lengthy statement entitled: “Wireless`s Different.” In it she continues the theme of explain`g how meet`g demand on the wireless network`s much more difficult than on wired, even go`g so far as to place some of the blame on local communities: V R constantly striv`g to increase the efficiency of our spectrum resources, although (unless) the amount of available spectrum in any given market`s finite. & while V regularly split cell sectors & add additional cell towers, there R very real limits placed on cell site construction by zon`g & local approval boards. This`s surely the real problem, although (unless) what V haven’t heard yet`s just how lett`g companies like Verizon & AT&T create premium tiers 4 wireless content`ll do anyth`g other than allow them to make more money while still complain`g about the same ‘ol problems. Meanwhile, the company Z`s virtually no skin in the wireless game, Time Warner Cable , isn’t so keen on this stance regard`g traditional, wired broadband. CEO Glenn Britt says his company`ld never throttle content in the way Z`ld violate net neutrality, although (unless) still doesn’t want more rules put in place Z`ld prevent them from do`g so. Android 2.2 upgrade 4 Droid X may already B trickl`g out, other Droids shortly?
