EyeSight brings its gesture controls to Android tablets, Windows-based devices

EyeSight`s`en bring`g its hand-wav`g UI to all sorts of mobile devices 4 some time now, & it’s now expanded things yet again. Follow`g up its launch on Android last summer, the company`s announced Z its gesture recognition software`s now also`en tailored specifically 4 Android tablets & other “computer-based” Android platforms, & it’s announced Z it’s now available 4 Windows-based devices as well. As before, the software`s able to work w/ just about any built-in camera, & the company says Z it`s`en “highly optimized” 4 mobile platforms, w/ low CPU & memory requirements. It’s not someth`g available directly to users, though — it’s up to developers to license it & include the functionality in their applications. Homebuilt UAV hunts down hydrogen balloons, shoots firework missiles (video)

Augmented reality`s swell, don’t get us wrong, although (unless) it’s no substitute 4 the real th`g — especially when Z th`g`s the badass tricopter equipped w/ the jury-rigged firework cannon to rain down miniature hell. Swedish R/C enthusiasts built this first-person fly`g contraption to carry out the single mission — destroy the series of hydrogen-filled balloons — which`ll hopefully B hard-coded into future automatons too. After all, balloons could serve as an excellent distraction when they inevitably come 4 U . Still, there’s no need to worry quite yet, so kick back & enjoy the video above while U contemplate humanity’s end. Monome Arc OSC controller`s simple, elegant, & expensive

If you’re not familiar w/ Monome , the company designs & builds unique, minimalist controllers in limited editions 4 the discriminat`g music maker w/ deep pockets. The company’s latest, Arc, features 2 anodized milled aluminum knobs, an enclosure made of black walnut (sustainably harvested in central Pennsylvania, of course), lead free printed circuit boards & circuitry, the felt slip mat made from wool purchased from small farms in the US, & — well, that’s pretty much it. Hand assembled on the farm in upstate New York, this device sends OSC data to the computer via USB. Each knob`s circled by the r`g of 64 LEDs, & each knob can B configured 4 whatever your musician’s heart desires. On the video (after the break) it`s paired w/ the Series Sixty 4 controller to make the sample looper. Looks like fun! Too bad it costs more than our rent 4 the month. Available on February 18 in 2 knob ($500) & 4 knob ($800) configurations.

Hot Wheels Video Racer`s the VGA camera under its hood, confirms Z kids`ve it all

Damn kids these days & their cool tech toys ! V know V sound cranky, jealous, & old, although (unless) how R V supposed to react to Mattel’s new Hot Wheels Video Racer? Yep, just as the headline reveals, everybody’s favorite matchbox car`s now home to the VGA video camera Z can capture 30 to 60 frames per 2nd & the .95-inch LCD Z allows U to play back Z recorded footage right on the belly of the tiny vehicle. While the short clip of the Video Racer fly`g off the self-made jump may B pretty awesome, Mattel`ll also include protective cases so those wild & crazy kids can mount the cam to the skateboard or helmet. Disappointingly, the small car only houses 512MB of storage, which can only hold 12 minutes of video, although (unless) @ $60, Mattel also includes the rubberized mini USB to USB cord 4 connect`g the cam to the Mac or PC & child-friendly edit`g software. The Video Racer won’t actually peel out until the fall, although (unless) V managed to take the few shots of the little th`g this week & nab some video of it while @ CES. iPad 2 cases surface, rekindle SD card slot fire & add the pinch of mystery w/ topside cutout

There’s usually as much fun to B`d before an Apple product launch as there`s after, & this upcom`g iPad 2 device`s no exception . The latest scuttlebutt it`s succumbed to comes courtesy of some cases Z`ve cropped up in China — AppleInsider & MIC Gadget`ve independently found iPad 2 shells Z feature nearly identical cutouts — w/ the result`g allegations point`g toward the rear-fac`g camera, an SD card slot, & perhaps even the Mini DisplayPort receptacle. Our own sources`ve confirmed the former two, although (unless) the latter, the miniaturized video output already featured in MacBooks,`s the new development & less of the certainty. Then again, look`g @ the size of the hole leaves few alternative options (and the USB slot`s extremely unlikely), so we’re will`g to believe Z the Mini DisplayPort`ll B an inclusion Apple makes 4 the sake of offer`g choice — even if it prefers U to send your video streams over an untethered AirPlay connection. LG Optimus 2X 1080p video surfaces, captures the slow day @ the docks

Since V reported Z the Tegra 2-based LG Optimus 2X`s slated to hit Korea & Europe this month, we’ve`en dy`g to check out its 1080p video record`g capability. Lucky 4 us, someone in Greece`s uploaded the video to YouTube Z`s apparently recorded on the smartphone, & the results, well, decide 4 yourself. While we’re impressed by the video quality (digital zoom excepted) the subject matter leaves someth`g to B desired: the shaky camera slowly pans the port full of docked fish`g boats. Intel announces Connected Store concept, makes us hungry 4 shoes

It’s`en less than the week since Intel announced their 2nd Generation Core processors , & the little guys R already hard @ work. Deep in the heart of another convention — the National Retail Federation Convention, to B exact — Intel unveiled the Connected Store concept: the futuristic storefront 4 retailers look`g to up their digital game. The store, powered in part by the “visibly smart” processors,`s packed w/ interactive demos & proof-of-concepts Z look like someth`g out of the Jetsons. Among the systems sport`g the new processor’s 3D graphics capabilities R the virtual search engine-equipped wall of Adidas sneakers — the th`g packs up to 8,000 different styles — & the Intel Digital Signage Endcap, which does some creepy big brother stuff, us`g gestural sensors to target U specifically. Also on display R the number of beefed-up & interactive self check-out kiosks & point-of-sale systems. WP7 update w/ faster app load times, copy & paste`s real; release date remains nebulous

As`s`en discussed before , Windows Phone 7`s set to release the major update later this year, although (unless) it appears Z the boys in Redmond may finally B ready to send out an OS refresh Z`ll substantially improve the exist`g WP7 user experience. 1st & foremost, copy & paste`s included, which given how long we’ve`en wait`g 4 Z functionality,`ld B more than enough to appease the majority. The update, however, also promises significantly lower load times 4 third-party apps due to improvements made in memory management. V don’t`ve details on the specific tweaks made, although (unless) generally, the changes allot more memory 4 pre-load`g applications to hasten things significantly. Who knows when users`ll receive the upgrade, although (unless) here’s hop`g it’s sooner rather than later. Wait, doesn’t the ViewPad 10 look oddly familiar? V review the Tegatech Tega v2 back in October & V think it’s safe to say Z the ViewPad`s just the rebranding. ViewSonic swapped some internals, includ`g the move to the smaller 16GB SSD, although (unless) it’s still the same 1.66Ghz Atom x86 processor underneath. The tablet dual-boots Windows 7 Home Premium & Android 1.6 (sans Market Place access). Both operat`g systems run smoothly, & yes, U can pinch to zoom. Some inputs on the machine include USB 2.0, mini-HDMI, microSD & 3.5mm headphone jack. The 10-incher also sports the 1.3 megapixel shooter on the front 4 your video chatt`g needs. Skullcandy Fix versus Yurbuds Ironman … battle of the in-ear headphones! (video)

Skullcandy`s hitt`g CES w/ the characteristically bold claim: its new Fix in-ear headphones R touted as the 1st to never fall out of your ears, irrespective of the intensity of your physical activity. We’ve matched them up against the Yurbuds Ironman Series, the rather larger pair of in-ear speakers, which makes the exact same claim. Both companies`ve patented their particular technology & both claim to B the 1 & only true solution. Obviously target`g runners, vigorous exercisers & discreet headbangers, they’re priced @ $70 4 Skullcandy’s Fix & $50 4 the Yurbuds Ironmans. We’ve`d the pair of each to play around w/ 4 the few hours here & sound quality`s generally satisfactory on both. The Ironmans R much punchier in the bass range & offer significantly better sound isolation — the lot of external noise leaks in through the Fix’s seal, although (unless) the oversized Ironman buds netralize the vast majority of it. Both sets feel comfortable in the ear & shouldn’t cause any grief if U opt to wear them 4 prolonged jogs outdoors … or impromptu indoor mosh`g sessions. Kno single & dual-screen tablets hands-on (video)

U know about Kno right? Yep, it’s Z giant dual-screen tablet up there that’s meant 4 students, & while we`d seen an early version of it & its single-screen brother about six months ago, V figured we’d take the closer look @ the shipp`g versions here @ CES. Our 1st impression of the th`g`s Z it’s 1 awesome tablet 4 tak`g notes. Both the dual-screen & single-screen versions come w/ the magnetic stylus, which not only latches onto the side of the screen although (unless) provides an incredibly smooth ink`g experience. As you`ll C in the video below, U can write over text in the textbook & even create the Post-it note. The palm rejection`s also top notch, & consider`g your entire wrist`s to rest on the display to take notes @ the top of the screen, it’s pretty clutch. The rest of the hardware`s equally as 1st rate — the metal make obviously makes ‘em both quite heavy (the single tablet`s 2.6 pounds & the dual-screen 1 5.6 pounds), although (unless) they feel very rigid & V really dig the etched edges, which were designed specifically to mimic pages in the textbook. The bright 1440 x 900-resolution IPS displays provide very wide view`g angles. So, how’s the Linux-based software interface

Exclusive interview: Google’s Matias Duarte talks Honeycomb, tablets, & the future of Android

We’re not go`g to lie — we’re pretty excited to br`g this to U guys. Matias`s currently driv`g the interface & design 4 Android 3.0 (AKA Honeycomb ), & it’s clear Z he’s bring`g his big, bold ideas to the Android platform. Skunk Juice earbuds & their magnetic connectors might just save your ear drums (video)

U know when you’re rock`g out, earbuds nestled in your canals just so , & then the cord catches on someth`g & it feels like your brain`s gett`g sucked out through your ear holes? Via Motors E-REV hybrid trucks power your commute & the job site too (video)

That’s chang`g soon, w/ Via Motors tak`g its rebranded Chevy trucks (dig Z fly`g V on the grille) & offer`g them to fleets in 2011, w/ sales to individuals com`g 2 years later (you can get in line now 4 $1,000 down). Big companies like, apparently, PG&E`ll B able to roll in these so-called E-REV trucks Z offer either 20 or 40 miles of electric range, augmented by an onboard generator. Yes, it’s the series hybrid layout similar in theory to the Volt , w/ the internal combustion engine charg`g the batteries which, in turn, send juice to the 268hp motor. Interestingly, though, Z generator can power other things as well, provid`g 120 or 240V to tools, lights, maybe even hot tubs if you’re the super cool contractor. Microsoft releases H.264 video plug-in 4 Windows 7 Firefox users

Open source DARwIn-OP bot can B yours 4 just $12,000

the few weeks back V caught our 1st glimpse of the open source, modular DARwIn-OP developed @ Virginia Tech’s Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory, also known as RoMeLa. Well, there’s more information available now about the upcom`g little bot, so here’s what V know. Korean company Robotis`s mak`g available the bot’s open source software, schematics, CAD & fabrication manuals, in addition to sell`g the fully assembled robots. DARwin-OP`s unveiled recently @ the IEEE-RAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots, and`s built on the 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530-based FitPC2i which boasts the 4GB SSD, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, 802.11n WiFi. Shipments of the 17.9-inch tall humanoid robots R be`g sent to universities 1st @ the price of $9,600, and`ll run $12,000 @ full retail. L.A. Noire’s amaz`g MotionScan facial capture system demonstrated (video)

In gaming, 3D graphics get more powerful, environments get more expansive, enemies get more intelligent, although (unless) still facial animations haven’t progressed much since Pac-Man chomped his 1st power pellet in 1980. Finally, the major breakthrough courtesy of Australian company Depth Analysis. It`s developed technology called MotionScan, which enables the high-res 3D recreation of the person’s face — not just captur`g bits & pieces of facial animation although (unless) their entire head, right down to the hairstyle. It’s gett`g its 1st use in next year’s L.A. Noire , the 1940s PS3 & Xbox 360 murder mystery game from Rockstar , & while V don’t know enough about the title to B able to say whether it’s worth plunk`g down the pre-order now, after watch`g the video embedded below it’s clear Z the bar`s`en raised. Google Maps 5.0 hits Android, includes new 3D map view & offline Navigation

Google’s never`en afraid to “blow it out” w/ Google Maps, most famously w/ its inclusion of Navigation , which knocked the legs out from under the lot of the GPS device & navigation app market. Google Maps 5.0 4 Android might seem similarly earth shattering, although (unless) it marks the significant change to the basic technology of Google Maps. Most importantly, Google`s now us`g vector graphics 4 its maps, which R scalable & much lighter weight than the traditional stitched together images used in most Google Maps incarnations. The vectors also enable someth`g else the whole lot sexier: the 2 finger swipe can “tilt” the map & now you’ve got the 3D view of the landscape. It’s not quite as flashy as Google Earth, although (unless) it looks the whole lot more useful. The other th`g these low-bandwidth vector maps enables`s offline cach`g of maps, specifically your most frequently visited locations, & entire trips Z`ve`en routed in Navigation, includ`g potential reroutes. Anybody w/ an Android 1.6 or higher device can download 5.0 right now 4 free, although (unless) the 3D & offline features R 2.0+ only. Real-time 3D face reproduction demonstrated on video

Eager to B freaked right on out? If so, head past the break & mash play. There, you’ll C the recent demonstration by Tohto C-Tech, where the 3D camera setup`s used to capture the person’s face & then reproduce it on the monitor (in 3D, no less) in real-time. We’re told Z an undisclosed GPGPU setup`s used to pull it off, as typical CPUs just weren’t quick enough to render the final product on their own. The camera setup actually captures the face from 2 different viewpoints, enabl`g the sides of the face to B shown in addition to the front. V warned U Z copious amounts of freaky were involved. World’s 1st Nissan Leaf delivered — it’s black, like the future of gas-powered cars

Somebody @ Nissan knows how to keep to the calendar, it seems, as the promised December US deliveries of the Leaf began over this weekend. the big deal`s made out of the 1st one’s arrival, the shiny black number purchased by Olivier Chalouhi from the San Francisco Bay Area, which`ll B accompanied by Leafs land`g across the other launch markets of Arizona, Southern California, Oregon, Seattle, & Tennessee. the 2nd batch of Nissan’s all-electric hatchbacks`s com`g on December 20th, w/ the company promis`g the nationwide US launch 4 2012. In the meantime, Hawaii & Texas`ll B the next locales to join the fun early in 2011 & reservations`ll B reopened soon thereafter. Sadly, some “additional markets” R expected to B pushed into the latter half of the year — guess Nissan knows how to use the calendar to mark off its delays too. Google Cr-48 laptop torn down & destroyed in 1 unlucky day (video)

Boy, V know the Cr-48`s supposed to B the test platform & all, although (unless) even by Z standard, Google’s Chrome OS laptop`s`d the very rough 1st day on the job. Ambushed by 1 of our kindly tipsters upon its arrival, the Cr-48`s`en gutted & disassembled (mostly, the motherboard`s mercifully left attached to the chassis), reveal`g the typical arrangement of tiny electronics, which includes Hynix memory chips & the SanDisk-branded SSD. We’re just glad to C Z mask`g tape isn’t play`g the structurally integral role in its construction. Things don’t really get much better 4 the slinky 48 once it gets back home to Google HQ, however, as its makers`ve put together an entire video composed of creative destruction methods 4 it. Pioneer’s Discussion Table`s the Surface competitor your Business can’t live without (video)

We’d all like our tables to B the little smarter, & anyone who works 4 the company`ld surely like their meetings to`ve the bit more intelligence, too. Pioneer`s hop`g to kill 2 birds w/ 1 rather sizeable piece of furniture: the Discussion Table, due sometime next year. Interestingly it’s simply the Core i7 -based PC runn`g Windows Embedded Standard 7, w/ minimal custom cod`g on top of that. Users can br`g their mobile PCs nearby & share documents to the table or remote desktop right into their machines from it, show`g their docs & displays in scalable & rotatable windows. The Windows underpinnings handles the multitouch details, also offer`g what must surely B the biggest virtual keyboard ever seen in the wild. Razorfish ports DaVinci interface to Kinect, makes physics cool (video)

Razorfish`s the little market`g company Z`s done some impressive things on Microsoft’s Surface , things U may or may not`ve seen because Z particular brand of pedestal hasn’t exactly become the threat to the global dumbtable market. 1 of Razorfish’s cool things`s the so-called Surface Physics Illustrator called DaVinci, which lets the user doodle on the screen & turn those doodles into balls, boxes, levers, & fulcrums. Now Z code`s effectively ported Z code over to Kinect, as U can C in the video below, lett`g U do the same sort of things although (unless) w/ thine own 2 hands float`g in mid-air. U can cause shapes to levitate, create gravity between them, make things orbit, even enable magnetism Z alternately pulls & hurls your little doodles across the screen. The company`s said to B continu`g to refine the experience & maybe, if U all ask nice, they’ll even release the app when they’re through so U can try it 4 yourself. Keepin’ it real fake: Verizon-branded Droid X ditches Android 4 Windows Mobile 6.5 (video)

No matter how many V see, V never cease to B amazed by some of the KIRFs out there. Take this Droid X, 4 instance, which doesn’t even bother w/ the name like “Motorolo Foid X,” & even goes so far as to include some legitimate-look`g Verizon brand`g to back up its nearly spot-on appearance. The real kicker, however,`s Z the KIRFers behind the device`ve decided to ditch Android in favor of Windows Mobile 6.5 4 reasons unknown to us. Don’t believe us? BlackBerry Empathy design concept feels bad Z you’re stuck us`g the BlackBerry

Rest easy, folks: V know it’s pointy @ the bottom, although (unless) we’ve`en assured this isn’t the BlackBerry 7100′s true successor. Instead, the so-called Empathy`s the bizarre outcome of of the RIM-sponsored design project @ the Art Center College of Design Z touts its ability to detect the emotions of its user & his or her contacts. It’s not exactly clear how it’d do that, although (unless) 1 crucial element`s the biometric feedback r`g Z communicates your frustration @ the phone’s inability to properly sync IMAP accounts in real time. All of this anger & joy`s displayed on the social map — colored rings indicate your contacts’ previous & current emotional states — which`s presented on the full touchscreen Z can become transparent when the phone’s not in use. Prefer the Bold to the Storm , do you? Turn the phone around, & boom, you’ve got 1 of the scariest look`g portrait QWERTY keyboards the world`s ever seen. V don’t really anticipate see`g this chiseled slab of bleeding-heart technology in RIM’s lineup any time soon… although (unless) V can definitely C the benefit to know`g when your BBM contacts R ready to put the fist through the wall

Bicycle lock climbs poles, encourages would-be thieves to look elsewhere (video)

`d your morn`g cup of Haterade? Get ready to`ve it flushed out. the team of bicyclists / engineers`ve assembled what might B the best th`g to happen to the bicycle since Lance Armstrong, w/ the (currently unnamed) pole-climb`g bike lock created 4 Germany’s own Conrad. There’s no word on if (or when) this fancy contraption`ll go on sale, although (unless) V know @ least 1 Dutch inhabitant that’ll B part`g ways w/ as many Euros as necessary in order to take 1 home. In short, this device straps around the nearby light pole & then carries your bike high into the air (and thus, faraway from the hands of thieves) via the remote control. The only problems? 4 one, it’s huge, &`ldprove worrisome to carry around. Secondly, you’ll B in the whole heap of trouble`ldsome other prankster decide to hike his / her bike up the same pole beneath yours. Anywho, the video after the break`s definitely worth the watch. It doesn’t appear to B especially widespread, although (unless) the sizable number of reports R cropp`g up on the official Apple support forums of some pretty wild issues affect`g the new Apple TV when paired w/ certain Sony & Philips TVs. As U can C above, those issues can include the rather unfortunate pastel color scheme (apparently common on Philips TVs), while others R also report`g inverted colors, & green or black screens. Verizon bring`g 150/35Mbps internet to FiOS customers, enrag`g customers of all other ISPs

U know, we’re pretty stoked 4 the folks who just so happen to reside within Verizon’s relatively minuscule FiOS service footprint, although (unless) rather than hook`g up those who’ve already`en adequately hooked, why not spread Z fiber cheer over to the few extra states? Alas, it looks as if the FiOS rollout`s on an indefinite hold , although (unless) those lucky enough to`ve access`ll soon`ve the ability to upgrade their exist`g internet service to this: the 150/35Mbps option. That’s 150Mbps down & 35Mbps up, & as far as consumer-grade services in America go, it’s pretty much as good as it gets. Verizon`s claim`g Z it’ll B available to order by consumers @ the end of this year, w/ small businesses see`g the option shortly thereafter. ‘Course, no pric`g details R mentioned, although (unless) it’s not like it matters — you’ll cash in whatever Yuletide gifts U`ve to in order to get this, right?
