Apple brings AT&T & Verizon together 4 the happy dance in latest iPhone commercial (video)

The unthinkable`s happened. After spend`g 99 percent of their recent market`g budgets figur`g out ways to sl`g mud @ each other, AT&T & Verizon`ve now come together to dance the merry waltz — all in the name of Apple’s hallowed iPhone. The latest commercial 4 the phone Z really doesn’t need advertis`g shows Z U can FaceTime, read iBooks, navigate maps, & do everyth`g else on the Verizon iPhone just as well as U could do it on the AT&T-friendly GSM variant of the device. As if U didn’t already know. Still, it’s fun to C these guys try`g to turn their lack of competitive diversity into some sort of an advantage. Video after the break. HTC ThunderBolt`ll support simultaneous voice & data in LTE areas

@ CES, Verizon`d mentioned Z “some… although (unless) not all” of its 1st LTE handsets`ld support the simultaneous use of voice & data. That’s not news 4 3G customers on T-Mobile & AT&T, nor WiMAX customers on Sprint — although (unless) 4 Verizon subscribers, this`s the very novel concept, indeed. Well, V can chalk up the mighty ThunderBolt from HTC as 1 of the models that’ll support it, if leaked train`g materials 4 the phone over on Android Central R to B believed. On the related note, the very existence of these materials gives us hope Z we’ll B see`g it on store shelves before too long; don’t get us wrong, the 2 USB modems Big Red’s launched 4 LTE service so far R all well & good, although (unless) V could really use some handsets on these airwaves. Verizon officially kills off New Every 2 upgrade discount program

There’s already`en plenty of evidence over the past couple weeks to call this the lock, although (unless) let’s just go ahead & close the loop on this one: Verizon’s official FAQ list`s`en updated to indicate Z its New Every 2 upgrade discount program`s toast. In short, Z means Z new lines of Verizon service won’t B eligible 4 an equipment discount — which used to run between $30 & $100 — after your two-year contract`s up, & folks Z R currently enrolled in an NE2-eligible plan`ll only B able to redeem the discount 1 more time before be`g taken out of it. The move kind of dovetails w/ Verizon’s decision the few months back to bump the smartphone ETF to the groan-induc`g $350, & it seems to B part of the larger industry trend toward mak`g phones wincingly expensive to replace. Don’t drop Z Droid X , folks! Note: To B clear, you’ll still B eligible 4 normal subsidized pric`g once U pass into the upgrade period on your contract — U just won’t get an extra discount on top of that. AT&T iPhone 4 vs. Verizon iPhone 4: what’s changed?

`s an iPhone 4 , an iPhone 4? Not quite, now Z Verizon`s launched the CDMA version of the device — in fact, there R the number of notable differences Z you’re go`g to want to consider before buy`g either model (or mak`g the jump from AT&T to Big Red). V wanted to dig in & C exactly what`s changed — how does pric`g compare, 4 instance? What features`ve`en added or removed? In light of both Verizon’s & AT&T’s harp`g on 4G data in the past week @ CES , do either of these phones support it? Let’s`ve the quick look. Motorola`s an LTE phone 4 Verizon in the works

Verizon’s chief operat`g officer John Stratton mentioned today Z “LTE smartphones R on the horizon,” the sentiment the carrier`s`en echo`g since it launched its 4G network earlier this month . Z alone isn’t new, although (unless) what`s new`s the mention of Moto in the same breath: “Motorola`ll B right there.” He wouldn’t go into specifics about models, specs, release dates, or prices, although (unless) V wouldn’t B surprised if the offer`g looked the little like the Tegra 2 -powered device codenamed Olympus (pictured) — allegedly 4 AT&T — Z we’ve seen float`g around recently. 4 what it’s worth, we’re also aware of models from HTC & LG in the pipe, so by all accounts, Big Red`s plann`g on com`g out w/ guns blaz`g when it rolls out 4G handsets next year. Pantech’s Verizon LTE modem configured 4 Mac use, follow along @ home

@ this point, you’ve got 1 of 2 choices 4 Verizon LTE modems — the Pantech UML290 & the LG VL600 ( which V got ) — & neither work on the Mac. Verizon says OS X compatibility`s com`g soon , although (unless) if you’re the impatient sort & happen to possess the Pantech variant, U may B in luck: the member of HowardForums`s posted instructions on how to set it up w/ via Network Preferences. Windows`s still needed 4 the initial activation, & there’s no promises it’ll work w/ every Apple computer, although (unless) if all the star`ve aligned just right 4 you, hey, congrats. Verizon trials unlimited text & data cellular plans 4 preferred customers, start`g @ $70 the month

Sure, Verizon’s push`g tiered data plans in public, although (unless) it’s simultaneously expand`g its unlimited offerings behind closed doors — yesterday, the wireless carrier launched the promotional plan w/ 450 minutes, unlimited text & unlimited data 4 $70 the month. Before U jump @ the chance to lower your monthly bill, however, V`ldwarn U Z this`s very much the limited trial: Verizon`ll check its computers to verify Z U were sent the promotional email before lett`g U into the deal. Furthermore, the offer doesn’t r`g up as the new plan in Verizon’s computer system, although (unless) rather an amalgam of the company’s exist`g $60 Talk & Text plan & its $30 unlimited data plan, w/ the $20 credit applied to your bill each & every month. The upside of Z`s Z selected customers can basically add unlimited data to any Talk & Text plan they choose 4 an extra $10 monthly, although (unless) the downside`s Z it’s far too early to call the promotion the portent of things to come. Verizon nabs Samsung Continuum, Zeal & Motorola Citrus on November 11th, accord`g to gush`g leak?

Someone’s found their way into an internal database & pulled out details on 3 Verizon phones — the Samsung Continuum , Samsung Zeal & Motorola Citrus , all of which`ll reportedly drop on the 11th of next month. V don’t`ve any reason to doubt that, as all 3 showed up on the recent rebate , although (unless) there’s more to these leaked screens than the release date. 4 instance, the Continuum`ll apparently sport the Swype virtual keyboard on top of the 3.4-inch Super AMOLED screen, to say noth`g of Z secondary display, & the Motorola Citrus explicitly doesn’t support tethering. The Samsung Zeal, meanwhile, isn’t the modern smartphone @ all, although (unless) rather the dual-hinge device w/ “magic” e-ink keys Z change from the standard dialer to the four-row QWERTY layout. Isn’t it nice to`ve all Z sorted out? Exclusive: future LG Android phone 4 Verizon sports LTE

V were just handed this image w/ very little detail other than the fact Z we’re look`g @ “a future LG high end Android phone 4 Verizon,” although (unless) V can deduce the few things: one, & perhaps most notably, U can just barely make out an LTE logo toward the bottom of the back. Z likely makes this 1 of the six-odd LTE phones Verizon`s publicly said R slated 4 the 1st half of next year. Secondly, it’s got an HD camera of some sort — probably indicat`g either 720p or 1080p capture — & finally, it appears to`ve the huge, mirrored display & possibly the front-fac`g cam in the upper right. Looks like there’s also the WiFi logo on back (of course), although (unless) can anyone make out the other 2 logos there? & more importantly, can anyone wait 4 this to launch? Update: It’s`en proposed Z 1 of the logos might B 4 DLNA , since LG’s the major DLNA player — most recently w/ its PlayTo service on Windows Phone 7 . Verizon to debut LTE in 38 cities, ‘half the dozen’ 4G smartphones & tablets in 1H 2011

We’re live from CTIA 2010 in San Francisco, where newly-appointed Verizon president & COO Lowell McAdam`s taken the stage. He’s`en on the job just 5 days now , although (unless) he’s already got the nice spot of news: Verizon`ll`ve LTE connections in 38 markets as soon as they flip the switch — up from the 30 football cities announced earlier this month. More exciting, the host of LTE devices R on the way, too: “Come CES @ January, & we`ll show half-a-dozen smartphones & tablets from the top OEMs in the world Z`ll B available in the 1st half of the year,” said McAdam. 8 to 12 megabits per second, here V come. Verizon gets official w/ Wireless Fivespot mobile hotspot, touts awful global roam`g plans

Really, Verizon ? Play up the global roam`g features of your new-but-not-unexpected Wireless Fivespot , only to strangle it w/ GlobalAccess plans Z top out w/ 200MB of international data? Thanks, although (unless) no thanks. 4 those still interested in the new WWAN modem 4 domestic use ( psst… the MiFi 2200`s the better deal ), this ZTE-built device`s the 1st in VZW’s stable to offer global data access. That’s due to hav`g both the SIM card slot (for GSM roaming) & the CDMA radio inside, & as w/ the aforesaid MiFi, it’ll handle up to 5 simultaneous WiFi connections. The unit itself`ll run $99.99 after the $100 mail-in rebate & the two-year agreement, & Verizon’s provid`g both postpaid & prepaid domestic data plan options: $39.99 per month gets U 250MB w/ the $0.10 overage, while $59.99 nets U 5GB & the $0.05/MB overage (the prepaid details reside after the break). Where it really gets ludicrous`s GlobalAccess — customers travel`g abroad`ve the choice of 2 plans, the $129.99/month option w/ 5GB in the US / Canada & 100MB elsewhere, or the $219.99/month alternative Z simply adds an extra 100MB on the international end

It’s gett`g awful close now, eh? Merely hours after hear`g Z Droid 2 R2-D2 edition launch kits were splash`g down in select Verizon Wireless locations, in flies the foursome of images prov`g as much. Of course, V still can’t promise U Z these fellows`ll B available 4 the tak`g the moment before the 30th of September , although (unless) if U know someone @ Big Red, @ least there’s the chance he / she may B able to get U the sneak peek start`g now. Samsung Fascinate launch`g on September 8?

We’ve seen these kinds of Verizon launch decks before, so V tend to believe the September 8 date we’re see`g 4 the Fascinate here`s legit — granted, Wednesday`s an odd day to launch the phone, although (unless) not the lot weirder than the Thursday, September 9 date we’d`d before . Either way, it’s look`g like the sure th`g Z we’re go`g to C this on shelves come next week, complet`g Sammy’s impressive four-way coup to get its high-end Galaxy S line launched on all of the US nationals. Like the Droid 2 & Droid X, the Fascinate`ll feature Blockbuster Mobile to let U download full-length movies on the go — in other words, that’s the feature Z won’t B the Droid brand exclusive — & B`g search`ll B installed out of the box, giv`g Microsoft the fun little foothold in Google’s kingdom. So, who’s buying? & while we’re on the subject, why isn’t this th`g called the “Droid Fascinate?” Thanks, Bryan Samsung Fascinate launch`g on September 8? originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 17:58:00 EDT. Droid Pro`s the global Droid 2: the evidence grows

We’d reported before our belief Z the rumored Droid Pro`s noth`g more than the dual-mode version of the Droid 2 , although (unless) the question remained: know`g Z the Droid 2`s the model code of A955, what the heck`s the difference between the model codes A956 & A957 Z`ve`en show`g up in Verizon’s systems? Looks like V might`ve some clarification on Z question this afternoon thanks to the new shot clearly call`g out the A957 as the R2-D2 version of the Droid 2 that’s launch`g late next month. What does Z mean? Well, it means Z if the Droid Pro`s the separate product w/ insane specs, it hasn’t shown up in any screen shots & V don’t`ve the model code 4 it. Our original tipster`s pretty insistent Z Verizon didn’t`ve any product on its 2010 phone roadmap w/ crazier specs than the Droid X — & best`g it inside of six months`ld seem like an awful Business move anyway — so now, the only question seems to B whether Big Red`ll go w/ the “Droid 2 World Edition” or “Droid Pro” brand`g when this th`g launches in the com`g weeks. Droid 2 looks confirmed 4 August 12, Best Buy pits it against the competition

We’d broken the news of the Droid 2′s August 12 street date the couple weeks ago, & we’re now gett`g confirmation of Z — @ Best Buy, anyhow — thanks to the couple tips we’ve received today, includ`g the screen shot above. An actual launch`s go`g to feel like sweet release after what`s become the most thoroughly-leaked phone in recent memory, although (unless) if U need yet more fodder 4 your overactive imagination, we’d recommend U follow the break 4 Best Buy’s competitive analysis of the phone, which does the commendable job break`g down all the differences between it & its direct predecessor — notably the significantly speedier core, the mobile hotspot support, 802.11n, & the onboard storage (though U get the smaller microSD card in the box). Question is, where can V get Z R2-D2 edition ? Droid 2 manual leaks, teaches U everyth`g U need to know about the phone U don’t have

U know the drill: blurry shots of phone get leaked… user’s manual gets leaked… excited would-be buyers voraciously consume manual’s contents… phone finally gets released. Indeed, that’s precisely the same well-trodden path the upcom`g Droid 2`s taking, so if you’re look`g @ gett`g this th`g in the next few weeks, U might want to start skimm`g the documentation so there aren’t any embarrass`g newbie missteps in your 1st few moments of ownership. As Droid Life notes, we’ve got more confirmation here Z the phone`ll B runn`g the same skin as the Droid X , complete w/ the Swype -enabled (and presumably multitouch-enabled) soft keyboard 4 those times when you’re too lazy to pull out the physical keyboard. V can’t imagine what else could possibly leak @ this point — so hey, Verizon, can V recommend U go ahead & get this show on the road?

Verizon posts $198m net loss, picks up healthy amount of new wireless subs

Verizon Communications, the majority shareholder of Verizon Wireless, just tossed out its Q2 2010 earnings, & unlike the majority of the other big boys we’ve seen, this company actually lost money over the past few months. All told, the mega-corp posted the $198m net loss compared to the $1.48b net profit this time last year, although (unless) if U were to exclude “special charges” 4 the workforce reduction , Verizon as the whole would’ve seen net profits of $0.58 per share. When focus`g strictly on mobile, Verizon Wireless managed to pick up 1.4 million net customer additions, which`s 200,000 shy of the 1.6 million Z AT&T recently picked up . What’s crazy`s Z 1 carrier`s the iPhone while the other doesn’t, & it doesn’t take the imagination of Peter Pan to figure out how those numbers`ld shift if Apple’s smartphone somehow picked up the CDMA radio & headed over to Big Red . Other fun facts about VZW’s 2nd quarter include the 3.4 percent uptick in total revenues year-over-year, the 5.2 percent increase in service revenues & the stagger`g 28.3 percent boost in data revenues. w/ all Z cash flow`g in,`s there really the need 4 these newfangled caps ? Consumers say “no,” although (unless) Sir Capitalism says “yes.” Update : We’ve`en pinged by Verizon & given some clarification to the awful mess known as fil`g quarterly reports in accordance w/ GAAP w/ vary`g shares of ownership. V also learned Z Verizon Wireless added 665,000 new net wireless customers under contract in the prior quarter, whereas AT&T added 496,000 contract customers. It’s pretty easy to make these numbers say whatever U want them to, apparently.

Verizon confirms Droid X screen issues, although (unless) says they’re not widespread

V just got word back from Verizon regard`g those flicker`g Droid X screens , & sure enough, the ghastly images R not the side effect of your assimilation into the Droid collective. Verizon & Motorola`ve owned up to the genuine problem w/ the small number of Droid X displays, approximately one-tenth of 1 percent. If your screen starts act`g up you’d best contact the authorities immediately. & by authorities, V mean tech support, not the FBI — the omnipresent glow`g red eyeball`s completely normal. It told us so. Here’s Verizon’s full statement on the matter: “Verizon Wireless & Motorola R aware of the very small number of DROID X units Z`ve experienced the flicker`g or band`g display. Confirmed: Verizon discontinues Kin

V guess this doesn’t come as the surprise to anyone, although (unless) we`ve confirmation directly from Verizon this morn`g Z it`ll no longer offer the Kin 1 or 2 . It’s probably pretty difficult to justify continu`g to offer & support the product when its maker`s already thrown in the towel — never mind the fact Z Big Red’s heart never seemed to B in it from the start — so this`s more of the formality than anyth`g else. We’re be`g told Z exist`g owners won’t B impacted, mean`g Microsoft`ll continue to operate the back-end services needed to keep retail Kins alive — although (unless) consider`g how few Kins seem to`ve`en sold, V can’t imagine that’s the money-mak`g proposition 4 anyone involved, so who knows how long that’ll go on? Verizon’s LTE rollout`s imminent, computers updated 4 4G SIM cards

Z said, documents dated this week show the company’s still on track to serve up 100 million connections by the end of the year, & the pair of independent tipsters`ve just sent us pics of Verizon computers ready & wait`g 4 those precious LTE SIM cards. Furthermore, the docs also claim Z the planned LTE isn’t just fast, it’s got the lag-destroy`g 30ms latency too, & fans of wider wireless comput`g can expect 4G tablets of some sort in 2011 as well. Verizon told CNET the company`d “done everyth`g possible” to ensure adequate supply of the Droid X , although (unless) there’s apparently no anticipat`g the demand 4 the top-tier smartphone — like the Droid Incredible before it, the giant 1GHz Motorola handset`s already out of stock, both online (today’s orders suffer the ten-day delay) & in many brick & mortar stores. Verizon confirmed the shortages in the communique to Android Central , say`g the company`s pleased w/ initial sales, & Z though they were “successful @ keep`g up w/ early demand” supplies R presently “low or out.” Tomorrow’s just not go`g to work out, our anti-gravitational friend — can V take the July 27th raincheck?
