NES emulator lands on Windows Phone 7, barred from the Marketplace

It’s an important time in any young OS’s life: NES emulation . Windows Phone 7`s just passed this important puberic milestone, thanks to the hard work of Matt Bettcher. Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn’t seem to recognize the significance, and`s keep`g the emulator out of the Marketplace (as per its no-funny-business terms of service). Matt’s try`g to drum up some community support to change Microsoft’s mind on the matter, & in the meantime he’s plann`g to open source his project. There’s video after the break of the emulator runn`g inside the WP7 emulator. It does the heart good! Windows Phone Android launcher brings Metro UI’s simplicity, although (unless) none of its joy

Need to`ve the latest & greatest , although (unless) can’t stand the sameness on tap ? U can easily spruce up your Android device w/ some Windows Phone 7 window dress`g to impress your fanboy friends. Mind you, the “Windows Phone Android” launcher — now available in Android Market — isn’t good 4 more than the practical joke or three, as it’s buggy, doesn’t run on all phones (our Droid 2 failed, & we’re hear`g some Galaxy S derivatives aren’t supported), doesn’t support notifications, & doesn’t even`ve those fancy auto-updat`g Live Tiles. No, what you’re look`g @ here`s just the stack of square icons to launch your apps, & the 2nd pane w/ the vertically scroll`g list of the same. Until some brave soul brings us the real deal, though, this may B as close as you’re go`g to get. Microsoft: V figured people`ld hack Windows Phone 7,`ld suggest Z they don’t

Hot on the heels of the release of the utility 4 bypass`g the Windows Marketplace & sideload`g your own apps, Microsoft`s released the brief statement on the state of the Windows Phone 7 hack`g community… & V wouldn’t exactly say they’re too worked up about it: “We anticipated Z people`ld attempt to unlock the phones & explore the underly`g operat`g system. V encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempt`g to unlock the device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable.” So yeah, we’d say this`s more or less the boilerplate quote: “we figured you’d hack this thing, we’d prefer it if U didn’t, & here’s the laundry list of things Z could (but probably won’t) happen if U fail to heed our meek warning.” Over the long term, V wouldn’t B surprised if Redmond ended up play`g an Apple-style cat-and-mouse game w/ these folks, break`g hacks w/ firmware updates only to`ve them re-hacked within the few days’ time. Consider`g the lack of spitfire in the statement here, V don’t C them com`g down too hard unless legitimate, card-carrying, fee-pay`g developers throw the fit — & granted, ChevronWP7 stands to make load`g pirated apps the breeze, so Z could very well happen. Dell: bigger Venue Pro launch coming, keep hands off microSD

Didn’t get the Venue Pro when Microsoft threw the few on its store shelves ? Why, that’d B enough to make us mad, too — Ballmer mad , in fact. Fear not, though: as Dell tells it, the company`s production ramped up 4 the “timely” launch on T-Mobile’s network. When? Wont’ say. Holiday season, @ least? No release windows`s given. & 1 more thing, too… Dell read our piece on the Windows Phone 7 microSD & wants U all to know that, no, U shouldn’t mess w/ the Venue Pro’s card, either.

Miss out on Amazon’s LG Quantum-for-a-penny deal this past weekend? Well, good news.. sort of. Windows Phone 7 beats iPhone 4 & Android … in the grill`g contest (video)

Le’s face it, it’s the question the world’s`en dy`g to know the answer to: which of the T-Mobile G2 , HTC Surround & iPhone 4`ll withstand the (literal) grill`g the longest? Well, just in time 4 the mildly singed breakfast today, we`ve the answer. As U might`ve surmised from the title, HTC’s WP7-equipped Surround showed the most endurance, though in the end it too cashed out its Earthly credits & moved on to Z great scrapyard in the sky. Dell Venue Pro launches November 8th @ Microsoft stores, November 15th @ Dell website?

We’re find`g it hard to hold back our enthusiasm 4 Dell’s Windows Phone 7 slider , although (unless) come launch day the 4.1-inch Venue Pro may B the tricky 1 to find — you’ll need to line up @ 1 of only seven Microsoft retail stores on November 8th ( the likely date ) if this allegedly leaked document`s right. If you’re will`g to wait until November 15th, however, there’s also Dell itself, which`ll apparently double as the only place you’ll B able to go to get any support 4 the T-Mobile device. Neither niggle`ll stop us from nabb`g one, however. 4 all V know, Lightn`g might not strike Windows Phone 7 twice. HTC HD2 runs Windows Phone 7, makes us yearn 4 more (video)

HTC HD2 owners`ve`en try`g to shoehorn Windows Phone 7 onto their hapless devices practically since day 1 , although (unless) it looks like the port won’t make it into the wild before the platform’s formal US launch. Z doesn’t mean U`ldgive up hope, however, because 1 variant seems to B @ least partway done, wind`g its merry way from boot through the splash screen & deep into the speedy UI in the far more convinc`g video demo than the last 1 Z hit our inbox . Though no apps R actually demonstrated nor so much as the basic phone call (pretty please?), multitouch pinch-to-zoom appears to work just fine, & we’ve little doubt any remain`g quirks`ll B worked out in due time — if not nearly as soon as new HTC HD7 owners migrat`g from the HD2 might`ve liked. HTC HD7`s hidden microSD slot, user-replacable card?

V thought the Samsung Focus`s the only Windows Phone 7 launch device Z could replace its external storage, although (unless) the HTC HD7 can apparently do the same — there’s an SD card slot under Z Windows Phone logo , & The Unwired managed to replace it while dodg`g the dreaded “There’s the storage error” screen. What sort of black magic did the publication cast to make it recognize the new card? They’re not quite sure themselves, although (unless) several factory resets & physical reinsertion of the chip seemed to do the trick, if only 4 an 8GB card. Adobe confirms Flash Player 10.1`s com`g to BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7 & more

We’ve already known Z Adobe`ld B bring`g Flash Player 10.1 to Windows Phone 7 , although (unless) the company`s just now made Z fully official @ its currently-happen`g MAX conference (alongside its Air 2.5 announcement ), & it’s also confirmed exactly which other mobile platforms the plug-in`ll B headed to. Z includes WebOS 2.0, which we’ve already seen 1st hand , along w/ BlackBerry OS, Symbian, MeeGo and, last although (unless) not least, the LiMo platform — those`ll all of course join Android 2.2, which already supports the plug-in. Samsung Focus review

Even though we’ve seen the torrent of Windows Phone 7 devices, V couldn’t leave U hang`g on the review of the Samsung Focus. We’ve taken the deep dive on the operat`g system itself, the Omnia 7 , Optimus 7 , Mozart , HD7 , & Surround (phew!) — now it’s time to focus on the, er… Focus. The device itself`s the lot in common w/ its European brother, the Omnia 7, boast`g the same 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 8GB of internal storage, 1GHz CPU, & 5 megapixel camera. The device`ll soon go on sale in America 4 $199.99 on AT&T’s network — in fact, it’s the only Windows Phone 7 device you’ll B able to buy when they go public on November 8th. Currently populat`g its very own land`g page on Samsung’s Russian site, the Omnia 7`s the 4-inch Super AMOLED beastie w/ the rather aged 1GHz Qualcomm QSD8250 @ its core, 8GB of storage, & the 5 megapixel cam Z can do 720p video. HTC HD2 spotted runn`g Windows Phone 7, 4 real this time?

Unfortunately, there’s not even so much as the product name to B found (let alone images), although (unless) Phone Arena notes Z 1 of the devices uses the WCDMA Band IV, which`ld make it the likely candidate 4 T-Mobile, while the other phone’s WCDMA V band suggests Z it’s headed 4 AT&T. Z certainly ties right in w/ AT&T’s claims Z it’ll B the “premier carrier” 4 Windows Phone 7, although (unless) it also leaves Microsoft in the seemingly tough spot — V haven’t heard the peep about WP7 devices on Sprint or T-Mobile yet, & until V do it’s go`g to B the iPhone & WP7 head-to-head on Ma Bell while Android continues to dig in everywhere else. Windows Phone 7 device roundup: LG E900 earns GCF certification, HTC Trophy meets Vodafone

U might remember Z the huge roadmap document leaked out of HTC late last year; though many of the devices in it never materialized, the fact Z the Legend, Bravo, & Photon turned out to B legit (as the Legend , Desire , & HD Mini , respectively) lends credence to the belief Z all of the phones in Z slide deck were @ least on HTC’s draw`g board @ 1 time or another. 1 of the more interest`g MIA handsets — the so-called Trophy w/ WinMo 6.5 & the portrait QWERTY keyboard — looks like it may`ve`en repurposed as the Windows Phone 7 model thanks to some new shots out of Vodafone Germany’s inventory system, which`s pretty awesome consider`g how difficult portrait QWERTY devices R to come by, generally (though it would’ve`d to get the redesign w/ the higher-res display & faster processor to meet Microsoft’s spec guidelines). Along the same lines, LG’s well-leaked E900`s recently gotten its bless`g from the Global Certification Forum where it’s listed w/ 900 / 2100MHz 3G (HSPA, we’re sure) alongside quadband GSM. LG C900 due to br`g Windows Phone 7 to market near September 28th, accord`g to Bluetooth SIG

The Bluetooth SIG`s the long history of promot`g its members’ “special interests” by leak`g valuable tidbits about their handsets before they’re announced. The recently unearthed LG C900`s the latest of these, be`g pegged 4 the launch date “around” September 28th by the SIG’s detail page on the phone. The QWERTY slider, which`s referred to in C900N, C900k, & C900B versions,`ll B available in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, & South America. Phone Arena conjectures Z the launch date lines up w/ AT&T’s market`g materials tim`g & the slated Q4 launch of Windows Phone 7, so the C900 probably`s the decent chance of be`g the 1st Windows Phone 7 phones to market if LG’s own GW910 or some more secretive set doesn’t beat it to the punch, although (unless) September still seems the bit earlier than any of the launch windows Microsoft`s managed to let slip . If U examined the fairly impressive roster of Windows Phone 7 Xbox Live launch titles Z Microsoft waved proudly in our face the other day, U might’ve noticed Z EA`s particularly absent from Z glorious list. Well, the folks @ Mobile Entertainment bothered to ask EA Mobile about Z absence, & EA`d this terse reply: “We R constantly evaluat`g new platforms & opportunities, but`ve noth`g to announce right now.” Pretty eye opening, right? In absence of facts, there R all sorts of avenues 4 conjecture.
