Switched On: Mak`g the call on Windows Phone 7

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On , the column about consumer technology. CES 2011 saw the debut of what could B the biggest challenge to the Wintel dominance of personal comput`g since Windows 95 cemented its position. The combination of the Android operat`g system on ARM processors — ARMdroid if you`ll — grabbed most of the attention in the emerg`g tablet category on products such as devices such as the Motorola Xoom & LG G-Slate . although (unless) it`s also clear Z manufacturers — unconstrained by Cupertinian notions of what operat`g system`s best suited to what kind of device — R will`g to take the combination in new directions Z come much closer to the notebook form factor. the clear example of this`s the ASUS Eee Pad Slider . If hav`g the tablet thunder stolen from Microsoft wasn’t enough to make the company uncomfortable, clearly encroach`g designs like this were. & so, @ Steve Ballmer’s keynote, the company announced Z the next version of Windows`ll support not only x86 offerings from Intel & AMD – themselves mov`g closer to ARM-like system-on-chips – although (unless) ARM designs from companies such as Qualcomm & NVIDIA as well. Microsoft noted Z the new chip support`s requested by its partners, imply`g Z PC companies want to take advantage of the long battery life & thin form factors enabled by ARM architectures, although (unless) also br`g along Windows’ broad driver & software support. Microsoft clearly considers the tablet another PC, albeit 1 Z Windows’ hardware & user interface layer needs to support better. However, in strik`g back @ Android evolution, Microsoft risks collateral damage to its own mobile OS

ARMdevices: ARM-based Google TV platform ‘confirmed’ & com`g soon

Well, it looks like Windows might not B the only new territory 4 ARM in 2011 — ARMdevices`s report`g Z it`s it on “very high authority from someone @ Google” Z an ARM-powered Google TV platform`s “confirmed” & “com`g soon.” Z authority`s unsurprisingly remain`g anonymous, however, & apparently hasn’t provided much else in the way of details. This`s far from the 1st time we’ve heard talk of ARM 4 Google TV, though — as ARMdevices points out, even ARM President Tudor Brown weighed in on the matter back in November, say`g Z “if Google TV`s to B mainstream, it must B built on the lower power system… on lower cost technology,” w/ ARM presumably fitt`g the bill on both counts. Gigabyte shows off its new S1080 Windows 7 slate in Taiwan to little fanfare & even less excietment

So, while all the cool kids were show`g off their wares @ CES , the good people @ Gigabyte decided to throw their own tablet party across the Pacific. The S1080`s the slate U never asked for, in Z it runs Windows 7 on the dual core Atom N550 processor underneath the 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen w/ 1024 x 600 resolution. If multitouch navigation isn’t your th`g (an odd preference 4 those buy`g tablets), there R the couple of tactile mouse buttons on 1 edge & an optical mouse on the opposite side 4 thumbs-only operation. The device`s the massive (for the tablet) 320GB hard drive, SD card reader, ethernet port, & USB 3.0 connectivity to sate your comput`g needs. Also included`s the 1.3 megapixel webcam, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, & Bluetooth 3.0. Lastly, in what can only B considered an odd design choice, our Taiwanese friends elected to give the S1080 the VGA port instead of an HDMI connection. Word on the street`s Z the device`ll B less than $300 when it goes on sale next month, so if U R the member of the (presumably small) group of people who aren’t interested in an Android , Apple , Blackberry , or HP slate, the S1080 may B the tablet 4 you.

App store milestones: Windows Phone 7 hits 5,000 as Android passes 200,000 available apps

Apps, apps, apps ! Everywhere U look, more apps. Both Android & Windows Phone 7`ve reportedly crossed the couple of round number milestones recently, giv`g us the decent idea of the maturity gap between the two. Microsoft’s brand new OS w/ an old OS’ name`s rounded the 5,000 available apps corner — that’s accord`g to 2 sources keep`g track of what’s on offer in the Marketplace — while AndroLib’s latest data indicates Android’s crossed the 200,000 threshold when it comes to apps & games taken together. We’re cautious on tak`g either of these numbers as hard truth, particularly since AndroLib`s report`g 100,000 Android apps when there were only 70,000 — although (unless) they do provide rough estimates as to where each platform`s in terms of quantity, if not quality. It’s`en awhile since we’ve heard any news from the Adamo camp, although (unless) 4 those look`g to blow the bit of Z Santa cash on someth`g thin & light, the tim`g here couldn’t possibly B better. Nearly 1.5 years after the 13-inch ultraportable`s let loose — 4 $1,999 & up , no less — the new low-cost configuration`s emerged @ Dell’s website. HTC 7 Pro shows up on O2 Germany’s site, promises January launch

HTC`d pegged “early next year” 4 the 7 Pro’s launch in Europe, & when U think about it, January`s just about as “early” as U can get. O2′s boys & girls in Germany`ve thrown up the teaser page 4 the QWERTY-equipped Windows Phone 7 handset, say`g it’s expected to B available next month — the promis`g sign, indeed. Granted, launch dates can always slip, although (unless) consider`g how desperately the world needs some more landscape QWERTY options 4 WP7, we’d bet it’s 1 of HTC’s top priorities to get this th`g pushed. Indamixx 2 music tablet now on sale: $699 4 beta hardware

So, there’s good news & bad news. The good news`s Z $699`s $300 less than the purported $999 price tag we`d originally heard`ld B affixed to the Indamixx 2 slate. The bad news? It’s just the rebadged iiView M1 Touch , which can B`d 4 around $500. Z said, those who fork out the premium`ll get the copy of Transmission 5.0 runn`g atop MeeGo, not to mention the 1.66GHz Atom N450 processor, 2GB of RAM, the mini HDMI output & the 250GB hard drive. Those who’d prefer to snag the model Z dual boots into Windows 7 can do so if they’re will`g to part ways w/ $779, w/ both models includ`g the mouse, free shipp`g & the gratis carry`g case. Well, what do we`ve here? An ExoPC runn`g Android 2.2 ? Oh yes, it’s Microsoft’s worst nightmare , & it`s indeed`en accomplished by 1 of ExoPC’s devout forum members. The details in the forum thread R extremely sparse, although (unless) apparently ExoPC fan MrWilson`s added the Froyo boot option to his 11.6-inch, Windows 7 ExoPC and`s gotten both touch & WiFi work`g within the Google OS. We’re hop`g he’ll post detailed instructions on how he got this all work`g soon, although (unless) in the meantime V leave U w/ the poorly shot video of it all after the break. Intel’s Otellini says 35 Atom-based tablets com`g in 2011, although (unless) smartphones get pushed back (again)

It’s`en the long, hard road 4 Intel in the mobile space, although (unless) it looks like things R about to get brighter: speak`g @ the Barclay’s Capital Global Technology Conference today, CEO Paul Otellini said Z some 35 Moorestown tablets runn`g the mix of Windows, Android, & MeeGo`ld arrive in 2011. (No wonder the company just formed the tablet & netbook division .) What’s more, he provided the handy chart show`g the OS breakdown by vendor: Toshiba, Dell, Fujitsu R go`g Windows-only, while Asus & Lenovo R build`g both Windows & Android products, & Acer’s go`g straight MeeGo. (Remember, Acer’s us`g AMD in its Windows tablet.) That’s pretty much right on schedule , & we’d expect to C several of these @ CES, although (unless) not all the news`s so rosy: Otellini also said Z Medfield -based smartphones won’t arrive until “mid-2011,” which`s the bit of the delay from the “first half of 2011″ we’d`en told in June . Sure, it doesn’t sound like the end of the world, although (unless) ARM-based competitors like Qualcomm , TI , & NVIDIA continue to push ever farther ahead w/ multicore designs, & Intel can’t very well catch up w/ delayed parts. Then again, if Intel can really deliver the performance & efficiency it’s`en promis`g it might not matter — we’ll C what CES`s in store. Microsoft: V figured people`ld hack Windows Phone 7,`ld suggest Z they don’t

Hot on the heels of the release of the utility 4 bypass`g the Windows Marketplace & sideload`g your own apps, Microsoft`s released the brief statement on the state of the Windows Phone 7 hack`g community… & V wouldn’t exactly say they’re too worked up about it: “We anticipated Z people`ld attempt to unlock the phones & explore the underly`g operat`g system. V encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempt`g to unlock the device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable.” So yeah, we’d say this`s more or less the boilerplate quote: “we figured you’d hack this thing, we’d prefer it if U didn’t, & here’s the laundry list of things Z could (but probably won’t) happen if U fail to heed our meek warning.” Over the long term, V wouldn’t B surprised if Redmond ended up play`g an Apple-style cat-and-mouse game w/ these folks, break`g hacks w/ firmware updates only to`ve them re-hacked within the few days’ time. Consider`g the lack of spitfire in the statement here, V don’t C them com`g down too hard unless legitimate, card-carrying, fee-pay`g developers throw the fit — & granted, ChevronWP7 stands to make load`g pirated apps the breeze, so Z could very well happen. Windows Phone 7 gets user-friendly hack 4 bypass`g the Marketplace, load`g your own apps

Windows Phone 7 Marketplace hits 3,000 apps & games, attracts 15,000 developers

It’s stagger`g to think how much things`ve changed in the cellphone industry over the last few years. Where vendors once measured success largely in terms of units shifted, future success`s now measured by the number of apps, games, & devs attracted to each oppos`g platform in the burgeon`g smartphone marketplace. Just last week, Nokia announced Z it`d lured in some 400,000 new developers over the last year . Now Microsoft`s tout`g the rather meager (by comparison) 15,000 Windows Phone developers “signal`g their intent to br`g excit`g content to Windows Phone.” Enough implied manpower to push well beyond the 3,000 apps & games expected to populate the Windows Marketplace by the end of this week. Of course, objectively measur`g the developers intent to develop on the platform`s difficult. & really, platform potential`s not the primary th`g driv`g the purchas`g decision of most consumers — not w/ so many viable handsets available today . Still, it’s good to C such optimism coupled w/ the fact Z the vast majority of people of the world — gasp! — still don’t use smartphones.

LG Optimus 7 review

If last night’s cameo show`g off the official Twitter client 4 Windows Phone 7 wasn’t enough of the hint, yes, we’ve gotten our hands on LG’s Optimus 7 . Pair of HTC Windows Phone 7 devices hit the FCC

Not much in the way of specifics here, although (unless) the pair of HTC Windows Phone 7 devices`ve just turned up on the FCC’s website, which leads us to believe Z some phones might actually B launch`g any day now . Unfortunately, there’s not even so much as the product name to B found (let alone images), although (unless) Phone Arena notes Z 1 of the devices uses the WCDMA Band IV, which`ld make it the likely candidate 4 T-Mobile, while the other phone’s WCDMA V band suggests Z it’s headed 4 AT&T. Microsoft rolls out Windows Live Messenger 4 Zune HD

The Zune HD may not`ve seen quite the explosion of apps Z many`d hoped for, although (unless) it’s just gotten the pretty big one: Windows Live Messenger. Z`ll naturally give U much of the same functionality of its desktop counterpart (also receiv`g an update today), includ`g the ability to keep watch on updates from various social network`g sites, & even use Facebook Chat. It’ll also display the music U`ve play`g right in the app and, just like the desktop version, it’s free. Look 4 it in the Zune Marketplace right now. Shocker! Samsung licenses Windows Phone 7

Okay, 2 crazy bits of news here: 1st off, it seems Samsung intends to start mak`g cellphones. Second, some of them`ll B runn`g Windows Phone 7 ! Insane, right? Okay, V kid, although (unless) Sammy`s just now gett`g official w/ the news Z it`s licensed Microsoft’s upcom`g mobile platform 4 its own purposes, & Z the company “plans to launch several models based on Windows Phone 7 this year in the US, Europe & Asia.” Of course, 1 of the most prominent WinPho 7 prototypes Microsoft`s`en trott`g around this year`s`en the Samsung loosely based on the i8910 HD , so this`ldcome as… well, absolutely no surprise whatsoever. Samsung terminates support 4 Symbian

It`s almost the year ago Z the senior Samsung VP`s quoted express`g plans to drop Symbian . Samsung quickly backtracked on those comments w/ the vague commitment to its multi-OS strategy. Well, the other shoe just dropped via an email sent to registered Symbian developers advis`g Z Samsung`ld close its Symbian forum & remove all Symbian content by year’s end. Not Z V can blame them — while Symbian`s just start`g to show signs of recovery the OS`s`en flounder`g over the last few years. & Samsung, Nokia’s biggest threat in its bid to democratize smartphone sales,`s already plenty busy w/ Bada , Windows Phone 7, & Android. So while Samsung might still B the member of Symbian Foundation, it, like Sony Ericsson ,`s do`g so in name only. Onkyo dropp`g 3 Windows 7 slates on totally-suspicious-by-now public

Never saw this coming, did you? Oh, right, U did . Onkyo`s join`g the Windows 7 slate tablet fray w/ 3 new models, which`ll begin shipp`g next month in Japan. The variety`s minor, though each tablet`s gett`g its own design language: the 11.6-inch & 10.1-inch TW317A5 & TW217A5 both rock 32GB SSDs, while the TW117A4 kicks it old school w/ the 160GB HDD. Thanks to Windows 7 Home Premium the trio`ll B gett`g all the touch-friendly benefits the OS can offer, & Atom N450 & Z530 processors`ll sipp`g battery on behalf of the machines. No word on price, although (unless) V really prefer the “Windows 7 slate Z`ll only ship internationally & Z nobody V know`ll buy” more as the construct anyway. HTC Mondrian stars in unfinished AT&T ad campaign, jump-kicks lesser smartphones? (video)

`ld U believe Z after months of leaks , this`s the 1st time we’ve allegedly seen the HTC Mondrian ? It’s true — though from this angle, it’s the dead ringer 4 the Mozart , which looks just like the Shubert , too. The above picture comes from the pair of totally believable although (unless) obviously incomplete ads 4 AT&T’s Windows Phone 7 push, which if real make the Mondrian look like it might B the flagship device; perhaps those rumors of the 1.3GHz Snapdragon inside weren’t too far off. U won’t find real phones demonstrated in the videos after the break, although (unless) don’t let Z stop U from click`g through — U do like watch`g oblivious folks fly`g through the air, don’t you? Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 actually doesn’t support tethering

We’re not exactly sure how this message got so confused, although (unless) Microsoft’s come out today to let us know Z Windows Phone 7 officially doesn’t support tether`g @ all, despite earlier comments by Brandon Watson Z it’d B the network operator call on whether to enable it . If we`d to guess, this`s probably the feature Z`s “on the bubble” as Microsoft moved toward RTM, & it simply didn’t make the cut 4 version 1.0 — we’d definitely expect to C it in the future release, though there’s no guidance from Microsoft @ the moment on whether (or when) that’ll happen. Editorial: Nokia’s not go`g to switch to Android or Windows Phone 7, so stop it already

I’ve`d it. I can’t take all this Nokia operat`g system speculation anymore. The final straw came w/ the VentureBeat piece cit`g the “trusted source” Z claims “Nokia`s now likely to use Windows Phone 7 as an additional platform 4 its phones.” Enough already. Nokia`s the strategy & hir`g Stephen Elop away from Microsoft’s Office team isn’t go`g to change Z no matter how much the US media (where Nokia`s near zero presence) wishes it were true — if anything, it’s go`g to accelerate it . Nokia`s`en aggressively work`g towards the very clearly defined strategy . Sure, they’ve`en slow to implement it — too slow — although (unless) it’s near`g completion & ready to bear fruit. The Symbian rewrite`s the 2 phase strategy Z`ll ultimately help Nokia in its bid to democratize smarpthones. U can already C how Nokia`s shov`g what were once high-end smartphone features into incredibly cheap handsets. The 1st rewrite`ll hit devices in weeks as Symbian^3 and`s the play to make exist`g Symbian users (of which there R millions) feel like their OS & services R modern.

HP announces TouchSmart 310 & Omni100 all-in-one PCs

It’s not just oddly random Android tablet-based printers 4 HP today — the company also announced 2 new all-in-one PCs, the TouchSmart 310 (pictured above) & the Omni100. The TouchSmart 310`s obviously the latest in the TouchSmart line, w/ the 2.8GHz Athlon II 240e dual-core CPU, 4GB of RAM, Radeon HD 4270 integrated graphics, the 1TB drive & the 20-inch 1600×1900 touchscreen runn`g the latest version of HP’s Windows 7 touch overlay w/ custom interfaces 4 Facebook, Hulu, Netflix, Twitter, & HP’s built-in HDTV tuner. Not bad — although (unless) we’ll C how much all those options cost above the $699 base price. On the non-touch front, the Omni100 also`s the 20-inch 1600×1900 display, although (unless) it’s runn`g HP’s MediaSmart Windows 7 overlay on the 1.8GHz Athlon II 260u w/ 3GB of RAM, the 500GB drive & the same Radeon HD 4270 integrated graphics. It’s also cheaper, start`g @ $499 — we’re definitely the little concerned Z HP’s cheaped out on display quality @ those prices, although (unless) we’ll`ve to C things in person first. We’ll find out soon enough — both of these hit on the 22nd. ExoPC`s Intel’s WiDi-enabled Atom tablet, V go hands-on w/ near-final build

We’re still not quite sure why Intel decided to forego mention`g the product name in this morning’s keynote, although (unless) Z Atom-based tablet w/ Wireless Display technology ? That’s the ExoPC , accord`g to the very people who make the device. V caught up w/ the company @ IDF 2010 & checked out both an older version of the device & the near-production model — still the super-glossy glass screen w/ admittedly bad view`g angles, although (unless) we’ve`en promised the final display`ll alleviates those problems. The unit V held`s also the good bit lighter than before — 144 grams to B exact, accord`g to the rep — &`d the rubber matte feel to the back. The ExoPC`s powered by Intel’s PineTrail — specifically the Atom N450 , although Oak Trail`s someth`g the company’s look`g into 4 the future. V won’t go into every detail of what V saw, as U can check out our preview from May 4 the more exhaustive (and still pretty accurate) look. We`ll say Z the unit`s still incredibly snappy (thanks in no small part to 2GB RAM & SanDisk SSD ) & we’re still lov`g the ability to switch from Windows 7 to the very friendly “Connect Four” UI (our unofficial name 4 it). The keyboard`s still Windows 7 standard, although (unless) V were told it’s reached out to multiple companies — includ`g Swype — and`s also look`g to its developer community 4 greater support in the buildup to launch. So, about Z WiDi demo this morning… the company wouldn’t tell us the story behind that, only to say Z it`s an ExoPC in the demo, WiDi`ll B included eventually although (unless) no promises were made as to its inclusion @ launch.

FaceTime headed 4 Mac OS X & Windows next?

It seems more than the little odd to us Z Apple hasn’t bothered to make FaceTime compatible w/ its own longstand`g desktop video chat service, iChat, although (unless) we’ve @ least supposed Z it’s an inevitability w/ whatever upcom`g Mac OS X update or software bundle Z Apple deems appropriate. Now Mac4Ever , who`s spot on w/ the pile of rumors last year, although (unless) hasn’t succeeded w/ its recent prediction of an iLife ’11 launch in August,`s say`g Z Apple`s prepp`g FaceTime both 4 Mac & PC. V don’t know if Z means build`g the whole copy of iChat 4 Windows, or just mak`g FaceTime compatible w/ some exist`g PC video chat service, although (unless) it`ld certainly improve the odds of us ever find`g the legitimate use 4 FaceTime. Exclusive: Samsung Cetus i917 bows 4 AT&T, shows off its Windows Phone 7 ways

Does the almost Pre -esque shape of this beast look vaguely familiar? It should, because it matches up nicely w/ the outline of the Samsung Cetus V saw in the FCC the little while back. Microsoft to open mobile games studio, develop & incubate Windows Phone 7 titles

Microsoft employees may eat their own dog food , although (unless) they won’t`ve to code cross-platform Windows Phone 7 games in their spare time — Redmond job postings recently revealed Z there’s the studio 4 that, which`ll develop & publish first- & second-party titles on the company’s dime. Accord`g to job descriptions, the newly-christened “MGS Mobile”`ll develop “showcase” Windows Phone 7 titles w/ an emphasis on connected play , & also incubate titles from indie devs & partners like the original Microsoft Game Studios, its older Xbox-based sibling. Interestingly enough, games won’t necessarily B limited to Windows Phone 7 devices, although (unless) may appear on “emerg`g mobile platforms” as well — the idea be`g to advance Microsoft’s position in the mobile gam`g space rather than just pimp the WP7 platform.`s the world ready 4 Halo on MeeGo ? Samsung’s 4-inch Windows Phone 7 handset gets named: Cetus (SGH-i917)

You’d probably assume Z Samsung`ld`ve the difficult time overshadow`g the Galaxy S right now, although (unless) all it really takes`s the salacious Bluetooth SIG entry Z leaves only the most important parts to the imagination.
