How`ld U change Windows Phone 7?

Fair’s fair, right? The last time V spoke, V gave U all ample opportunity to tell webOS’ new owners how revision 2.0`ldB changed , & now Z Microsoft’s latest & greatest`s`en on the open market 4 the few months, it’s time to do the same w/ Windows Phone 7 . It’s obvious Z WP7`s the huge, huge leap forward over Windows Mobile, although (unless) as the fledgl`g mobile OS, there R naturally quite the few areas where improvements could B made. If U were blessed w/ the ability to magically wave the wand & change anyth`g about Windows Phone 7, what`ld it be?`ld U tweak how the email notification system works? Alter how the tiles R laid out? Telus to bundle free Xbox 360 w/ every WP7 activation or renewal 4 the limited time, says leak

Buy this phone, won’t U please buy this phone? We’ve no idea why Telus`s to try so hard to convince Canadian buyers to grab themselves the Windows Phone 7 handset, although (unless) the carrier’s expected to sweeten the deal dramatically over the next few days by bundl`g the freebie Xbox 360 w/ every WP7 device activation or renewal. The offer starts today, accord`g to this leaked memo, and`ll last through to the end of the week, December 19th. Telus carries the HTC 7 Surround & LG Optimus 7 , neither of which`ld seem to`ve caught fire quite the way Microsoft`ld`ve wanted. Verizon happy to offer Windows Phone 7 devices ‘as soon as Microsoft`s ‘em ready’

Yes, Verizon’s call`g them “Windows 7 mobile devices,” although (unless) the underly`g message`s clear — Verizon’s toss`g the Windows Phone 7 CDMA ball squarely into Microsoft’s court. There R no CDMA-ready smartphones runn`g Microsoft’s latest mobile operat`g system (save the late-bloom`g HTC 7 Pro 4 Sprint) & Verizon doesn’t intend to take any of the blame 4 that. Samsung Focus hav`g microSD issues, AT&T not install`g cards in-store

The Samsung Focus ‘s microSD slot`s always`en an odd little blip on the spec sheet, since it’s only kinda-sorta supported by Windows Phone 7 , & now it looks like it’s caus`g more trouble than it’s worth: Paul Thurrot says AT&T’s tell`g employees not to install anyth`g in the slot because of reliability issues, & Z Microsoft`s work`g on the problem. Now, we’ve`d mixed experiences us`g the microSD slot ourselves, & we’ve`en told by numerous sources Z AT&T & Samsung added the feature without too much encouragement from Microsoft, which told us @ MIX Z expansion wouldn’t B supported by WP7 @ all. We’ve also`en told by reliable sources Z the problem`s primarily to do w/ microSD speed & reliability — apparently only the fastest cards`ll work well, & current microSD class ratings aren’t accurate or meaningful enough to B useful. We’d bet Microsoft & Samsung get together & put out the line of Focus-specific cards before this`s all over — although (unless) wouldn’t it`ve`en easier to just build in 32GB of storage from the start? No custom ringtones 4 Windows Phone 7? (video)

V just sat through an eight minute long video of someone @ Pocketnow sampl`g every ringtone on his HTC Surround . Why did V do this? V honestly didn’t believe Z someone dedicate seven (plus) minutes of the YouTube video to ringtone samples! Suffice it to say, V never want to hear the ringtone again. Perhaps more importantly, our man points out Z Microsoft seems to`ve left the ability to add your own custom ringtones out of Windows Phone 7 altogether. The Surround itself`s the couple recognizable fan favorites Z V recognize from AT&T & HTC phones past, so it looks like manufacturers & carriers`ll B able to br`g their own to the table, although (unless) 4 the end user, it looks like U won’t B able to roll your own — @ least 4 the time being. & now we’re go`g to go put our phones on vibrate. LG Optimus 7 review

If last night’s cameo show`g off the official Twitter client 4 Windows Phone 7 wasn’t enough of the hint, yes, we’ve gotten our hands on LG’s Optimus 7 . This 3.8-inch machine`ll serve as LG’s international WP7 ambassador while Americans get to grips w/ its QWERTY keyboard-equipped Quantum brother. As you’ll no doubt B aware by now, the internal equipment`s standardized around Microsoft’s chassis spec, mean`g the WVGA screen resolution, the 1GHz Snapdragon inside, & the 5 megapixel camera shoot`g 720p video @ 24fps. You’d think, therefore, Z it’d B the nondescript, middle-of-the-road option, although (unless) the Optimus 7 left us extremely impressed after our 1st hands-on & we’re eager to keep digg`g 4 more. Does it put up the righteous fight against the more ambitious HD7 from HTC & Omnia 7 from Samsung? Jump past the break to find out. This review`s primarily of the LG Optimus 7 hardware.

HTC HD7 versus Desire HD: battle of the 4.3-inchers

Xbox Live 4 Windows Phone 7: your Xbox isn’t in your phone yet, although (unless) we’re gett`g there

V just spent some serious, & V mean serious time w/ Xbox Live 4 Windows Phone 7 . Just like your Xbox, this`s sort of an amalgamation of “the place U go to play games” & “the place U go to p`g & taunt your friends who also play games.” Unfortunately, it seems there’s the bit of the disconnect between phone-based scores & records & Xbox achievements — they all add up to the same gamerscore, although (unless) U can’t easily pull up your most recent Halo exploits to show off on your mobile, 4 instance. Luckily, Z still puts Microsoft in the better position than any other mobile games platform (until Apple can get Game Center to stop sucking, @ least). Be`g able to message & challenge friends all from the same “hub” where U keep your games`s great, & be`g able to view your avatar & the avatars of friends (you can even play dress-up w/ your own)`s nice gravy on top. Of course, what really matters`s the games, right? Luckily, Microsoft`s the pretty strong launch lineup, w/ some of the regulars like EA’s The Sims 3 & Need 4 Speed , along w/ some exclusives like Rocket Riot & the hotly anticipated The Harvest . The good news? Games look & play great, just like U might expect from an iPhone or Android level capacitive touchscreen platform, w/ The Harvest as an obvious & very important standout in complexity & polish.

Windows Phone 7 launch guide

Windows Phone 7 . V came, V saw, V took lots & lots of photos. Today, Microsoft unleashed its global domination plans on the world, & V wanted to give readers some insight into what happens now, what happens next, & what the more distant future holds 4 Redmond’s smartphone play. As V saw today, the WP7 push`s go`g to happen in multiple countries (more than 30), on multiple carriers (more than 60), & involve lots & lots of hardware. Ten devices to start — all announced today — & the slew of others likely to follow. Overall, the 1st approach of Windows Phone 7 into the marketplace looks strong. Microsoft`s built the surprisingly solid new OS (which V previewed in-depth back in July ),`s the strong set of carrier relationships in place, and`s introduc`g hardware Z if not revolutionary,`s certainly competitive. HTC 7 Pro 1st hands-on!

There aren’t many CDMA Windows Phone 7 phones hang`g around the WP7 launch event, although (unless) Sprint’s 3.6-inch HTC 7 Pro ended up in our warm hands just moments ago. Sadly, HTC didn’t`ve the work`g unit (no, IMDb demos 4 you!), although (unless) V did get to check out the hardware & its extremely comfortable five-row QWERTY keyboard — w/ clicky keys, the dedicated number row, & the properly staggered layout 4 once. As 4 the slider mechanism, it’s quite sturdy, & we’re definitely digg`g HTC’s good old tilt capability, here in its finest iteration yet — whereas previous devices typically floated the screen somewhere above the keyboard, here the front lip actually sinks into the phone’s frame 4 extra stability & class. That’s all V really got 4 now as this bad boy won’t B hitt`g Sprint until the 1st half of 2011, although (unless) in the meantime U can check out the quick video of it below. UK carrier’s roadmap points to October 21 release 4 Windows Phone 7, over 2,000 apps @ launch

The whole world & his neighbor’s dog may already know when Windows Phone 7`ll B announced , although (unless) when R the actual phones go`g to hit actual shelves? If you’re in the US, Z time still looks to B the month away , although (unless) the UK release window`s just`en narrowed down from late October to the single, albeit still speculative, date: October 21. Our tipster forwards the above snapshot from the 3 UK document show`g the “Windows 7Phone” nestled in between the BlackBerry Torch & Samsung Europa. Its Super AMOLED display tells us we’re definitely look`g @ the Samsung handset, while the 4-inch diagonal suggests it’ll B the Cetus ( SGH-i916 / 7 ). This sheet of revelation also finally gives us the hint as to the number of apps WP7`ll start off with, enumerat`g them @ “over 2,000 @ launch.” V don’t know why Microsoft’s`en so shy about Z number — 2,000 good apps R more than enough. Samsung i8700 put through 13-minute video exposé

U know how those Korean electronics makers are. 1 does someth`g — such as the Windows Phone 7 leak — & the other`s to go & try to match or better the feat. We’re hear`g references to this phone be`g called the Omnia 7, which makes sense, but`s @ present not someth`g we’ve`en able to verify. So what might U enjoy in this video treat? It’s mostly the jog through now familiar territory, though V do get to witness the phone tak`g the picture — the camera software & performance R 2 of the less well known aspects of WP7 handsets. Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 actually doesn’t support tethering

We’re not exactly sure how this message got so confused, although (unless) Microsoft’s come out today to let us know Z Windows Phone 7 officially doesn’t support tether`g @ all, despite earlier comments by Brandon Watson Z it’d B the network operator call on whether to enable it . If we`d to guess, this`s probably the feature Z`s “on the bubble” as Microsoft moved toward RTM, & it simply didn’t make the cut 4 version 1.0 — we’d definitely expect to C it in the future release, though there’s no guidance from Microsoft @ the moment on whether (or when) that’ll happen. Microsoft bring`g Windows Phone 7 to some languages without Xbox Live or Zune?

Microsoft`s already gone on record say`g Z Windows Phone 7`ll B initially launch`g in just 5 languages, all w/ essentially the same easy character set — English, French, Italian, German, & Spanish — although (unless) they’re undoubtedly champ`g @ the bit to ramp Z list up to the few more. In fact, the latest word on the street`s Z they’re go`g to B cutt`g the bunch of corners on those additional tongues, presumably in an effort to get them on shelves sooner rather than later. Not the bad strategy, perhaps, although (unless) the rumored list of features on the chopp`g block`s an ugly one: Xbox Live support, Zune functionality, & “limited” Windows Phone Marketplace capability, just to name the few, & only the browser & email views`ll actually support the native character sets; phone menus & keyboards`ll initially B in 1 of the “big five.” As much as we’d like to C WP7 in as many places as possible right away, we’d`ve to say this`s too great the sacrifice if true — all the best stuff`ld B gone. Microsoft previews Windows Phone 7 app design process w/ the golf`g scorekeeper (video)

So, what better excuse than Z to check out this concept golf scor`g app from Redmond? AT&T claims it`ll B ‘the premier carrier’ 4 Windows Phone 7

Without question, AT&T ‘s wireless growth these past few years`s`en largely based on iPhone — & w/ apparently good reason, if U look @ the numbers . As far as other platforms go, however, it’s not`en as rosy. Android ‘s relation w/ the carrier, 4 example,`s the story woven w/ years of hesitation , some questionable releases , & the rival that’s fully embraced it to notable success (releases like the Captivate & Streak suggest the stronger future). So w/ all Z in mind, what we’re hear`g from AT&T in the wake of Windows Phone 7`s decidedly more committal. Here’s what the spokesperson told PC World this week: “We’ll B the premier carrier 4 Windows Phone 7″ (emphasis ours). Strong words, although (unless) V still haven’t heard concrete plans from anyone, includ`g Microsoft, on what’s go`g on w/ the release.
